THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.

That job has got to suck. I see people holding those signs whenever a local store goes out of business or when a special sale is going on (like the K-Mart Bluelight sale). At first I thought it sounds like easy money but besides it's boring, you have to deal with the weather, hot or cold, rain, snow etc.
Hmmm. To wait for the possibility of WBs getting cheaper than that at the Victoria location, or attempt to connive people on CAG to buy them for me and somehow ship them for roughly the same cost...

Ehhh, I'll stay my hand for now. But when they hit 50% off, I sincerely hope a CAG is there to hook me up. I only need 2 for myself, but getting some extras for down the line and also for friends would be sweet.
If they're still there when it hits 50%, I'll get you one if you can Paypal. No prob.

That, good sir, would be no issue!

Especially not for a Japanese man imitating an Italian man, such as myself.

I'll keep my eye out. There's something special about you, as you kind of look like me, though you're an Italian and I am but a simple Frenchman.

another one for the list:

San Antonio, TX (SW Military/I-35)

this sucks, I've been going there forever(most memorably for picking out my toys for christmas every year as a little kid). that store was actually really clean and organized generally and seemed to have plenty of business. aside from the sentimental reasons, it was the only TRU on this side of town and only a three minute drive for me, now the closest TRU is a good 20+ minute drive away via freeway(that's if they're not closing that one too). they just did a pretty big renovation to that store too only a couple of years ago(two or three I think, I remember picking up Castlevania:Circle of the Moon for $10 for their 'grand reopening' sale pre-CAG). such a waste.

OT: Any insight on when further markdowns will occur?
I have no doubt that the "executives" cut loose when the co. was sold were rewarded handsomely for their incompetence. The upper reaches of corporate America is one of the few places where incompetence is not only tolerated, but can also make you very wealthy. TRU has needed an enema for years, and they need to wake up to the realities of the marketplace. Partnering with Amazon was a fairly good move, given their disastrous effort when first trying to go .com; but instead of making the most of the Amazon partnership, they basically just use them as a fulfillment house. Lame.

I say a half-dozen average CAGs could do a better job of running that company than what they have now. I can't tell you how many "business consultants" I've run into whose solution to every problem is to close stores and fire (good) workers, keeping the same shitty management and practices in place that screwed the company in the first place.
I remember reading that most, if not all of the executives got hefty bonuses. Some were allowed to jump the TRU ship altogether and receive an even bigger bonus if they went to BabiesRUs. I couldn't fathom why. I mean they basically helped put the final nails into the TRU coffin so how can anyone want them to run the only successful RUs branch out of the three unless the owners would like BabiesRUs to go under as well. Throughout my five years with the company I had seen the best of times turn into the worst of times and stay that way. After all of the horrible things I witnessed at my TRU giving my two weeks notice was a pleasure and it turned out to be the right move.

I guess it really doesn't matter if mine closes, seeing as the insane dickheads at mine banned me from the store without reason or explaination.

Hopefully I can snag some WaveBird Controllers, I have yet to witness the awesomeness of one. I've been using the same damn controller since GameCube launch, so me thinks it's time for an upgrade.

mira mesa, ca the only of the 3 san diego locations closing.

sucks its 5 minutes from my house. and it is easily the nicest out of the 3.

According to the first post and a couple of CAGs, the 3 closest TRUs from my house (Daly City, San Francisco, Emeryville) are closing, which definitely sucks, but at least with the game clearance they went out in style. I'm afraid that by the time game discounts increase there won't be any decent games left, so I'll probably go for accessories for now, and later on when game discounts reach a certain number, I'll go for games.

They are rgeat. I hopefukly going to pick one up and a memory card.

I have had a Wave since September 2002 and only changed the batteries 2-3 times.

I know the fact the Mira Mesa store is closing has been mentioned, but I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned what they have seen there. I swung by earlier today and I saw a table with $10 games, $9 since all video games are 10% off. Some of the titles were: Final Fantasy - Crystal Chronicles, GEIST, Transformers, Rumble Roses and a handful of other titles.

I had a chance to look at the list today of which stores were going to close, but I didn't get to due to lack of time. The only thing with certainty I can tell you is only one store in Wisconsin is closing, that store being in Fon Du Lac.

FYI- this doesn't mean Toys R Us is going away. 12 of these stores will simply be becoming Babies R Us; others will simply be moving to better locations in the general area of where the stores are now.

My store is closing in San Francisco. A couple of the other stores that I've been told are:

Colma (Converting to Babiesrus)
Emeryville
And there were a some others, but I cannot recall at the moment.

The interesting thing about our store is we still have the original style layout and the ticketing system. But this is definitely a sign of the times. And the process may have been a long time coming, but they sure were quick. It seemed like just after we got the news, the liquidators were already in line to get the process rolling. If you live in the San Francisco area, there won't be no large places to buy toys and stuff from.
The only NE Ohio area closing is one of the Akron stores on Romig rd (Rolling Acres). Not sure if this includes Cleveland area. Anyone who has been to this location probably isnt surprised.

Dave
Ahhh. I knew it was coming, but that store could always be counted on for clearance items. Where will I get my clearanced Star Wars Legos now?
i dont get it...the SF area will now not have any TRU's, doesn't have any gamecrazy's, or no walmart's....when smaller town's outside of SF and around cali have those stores...this sucks
fuck Walmart.

Really? There are 3 TRU's in Milwaukee, and another one in Racine (~30 minutes away), plus a new Babies R Us setting up shop in Brookfield (the old CC building on Bluemound, IIRC)....and none of the local stores are closing?

im amazed that toys r us gets so much love here for 'deals' they have the highest prices out there of any retailer.

By the time they clearence out these games there the same price elsewhere its actualy rare we get something like resident evil for 10 bucks at this place.

Hope my area has a closing.

They should keep Commack Toys R Us and close Stony Brook Toys R Us. That store sucks. All I ever see in that store is emo kids who walked from the mall to Toys R Us to ride bikes.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo...........................

Not my Springfield, OH store! That store was my little clearance bonanza.

Oh well, I'll live.

Sorry to hear you're losing your job. I hear there are plenty of factories in China hiring to fill Walmart's orders.

I live in Wayne, New Jersey (where Toys R Us Headquarters are, in fact I can see the building from my house.) There is one Toys R Us around here, I wonder if they would close that one.

Little birdie told me 2 things, lets say it is rumor.

1) 1 day in feburary they are using close out priceing on game consoles, all things not covered in close out day in day out.
2) As far as store closings go, they didn't look at the big picture when decideing which store/s in a bigger city would close. They just look at the last 3 months of sales and decided. Supposedly one store makes a killing around chirstmas but does nothing around the rest of the year is staying open. Since we don't know the accountting books, the argument could be said that the Christmas sales could be could enough that the boost the staying open store up ahead of the year round sales of the closeing store.
Parsippany, NJ one is closing. I was there last night and they had a lot of older Xbox games for $9.99.
Isn't that just a remnant of the clearance sale?
I live in Wayne, New Jersey (where Toys R Us Headquarters are, in fact I can see the building from my house.) There is one Toys R Us around here, I wonder if they would close that one.
The one in Wayne is the "Corporate Store" (where employees from the corp. can buy their things, I presume)... I doubt they'd close it.

Besides, I think it's a high profit store as well, since most of the regional clearance prices at the Wayne store are never as good as other stores in the area...

Looks like the store closing in Indianapolis is the one on 38th.

Surprise surprise.

They won't have anything to clearance... it's probably all been stolen already.

at least locally the deciding factor was babies r us.
the best store in san diego is closing because the crappy 2 stores have babies r us's close but there isnt one in the area of the good store, thus they close it and make it into a babies r us.

garbage.

So only one store in MD (Wheaton)? Can anyone else confirm any other MD stores? Wow this is actualy looking ok for me, the Wheaton store isnt too far away for me... but i have never been there before, best of both worlds for me... (knocks on wood...)

I found an intelligent and helpful employee at the Murray, UT store yesterday and asked him about any closings, he said the three main Salt Lake City locations look to be OK and will not be closing.
Do you know which one is closing in Columbus?
It's the one on West Broad Street. Clearance started yesterday.

------DM

FYI, the Levittown NY store is duplicated on the list darkprime posted...there's a few more duplicates but I don't know if any are intentional (more than one closing).

Still no word on any PA or other MD stores?
I wonder if the one at Northgate is going to close?
Haha, I forgot there was one at Northgate... which is probably a bad sign. I live in Lake City and always go to the Alderwood TRU. Not because I like it or anything, but just because for the past year I completely forgot they had a TRU at Northgate.

Horrible location, the only people that see it are either going to Red Robin or got lost circling the mall.
Do you know which one is closing in Columbus?
West Broad is the only one closing in Columbus. I haven't been there yet, but that's what a TRU employee told me. Springfield is closing, too, he said.

This isn't my experience with Toys R US at all. IMO, Walmart is the last store to lower a price.

I have close to 60 Xbox games alone (also own all 3 current systems as well as MANY prior ones - No Xbox 360 YET though) and I'd bet at least 30 - 35% of them were purchased at Toys R us. Another 20 from eBay (all new). Prolly around 20% at Target. Circuit City prolly comes in at 10% the rest divvied up between all the other stores combined.

If I want a deal my 1st stop is always Toys R Us and I will be very upset if I find out ours is going to be closing. I've not seen much being mentioned about Pennsylvania stores though.

it looks like the one nearest me wont be closing, but a wal mart is scheduled to open close by next month, so who knows, maybe next year I can play the vulture.
