Pre-Order Borderlands 2 from us for 10% off and help me get a tattoo! Yes it activates on Steam!

I am a huge Borderlands 2 fan and I want this to be our best selling pre-order ever. So I've drawn a line in the sand. If, from now until launch, we take 40,000 more preorders than where we were on 7/2/2012 I will get a Borderlands tattoo on my back.

Agreed. And once you know what you want, you might as well shop around. Newegg doesn't do any price matching either.

Frankly, Newegg is sort of the Steam of computer components -- they got to the top for a good reason and they're not a bad place but now people just assume it must be the "best" when they're really better served by shopping around. Ironically, often shopping around at Amazon... just like with Steam :D

Hear, Hear! Personally I spend a good bit more than most to build a *quiet* gaming PC, but such expenses are unnecessary and don't make it go faster.
Yea, I guess my point was don't skimp on the parts that enable the performance-parts to perform at their best for the longest amount of time. Ie. Don't get a super cheap PSU that's going to power spike your system within a year. Or buying a super cheap Case w/ pretty lights that has bad airflow.

Newegg, Amazon, TigerDirect, and Tomshardware are great places for reviews and buying, but check out Microcenter and Frys if you have one in your area. I saved almost $200 over the online stores by driving 70 miles(roundtrip) to a Microcenter.

P.S. Sorry to get off-topic!

I'm pretty sure most people know the cost of putting together a respectable gaming pc. The problem is simply peer pressure / community. The "in-thing" is to be on Xbox Live which I find completely absurd because the sales are terrible and it costs yearly to just play online.

The other problem PC has against it is that many people have tried before and were turned off by it due to troubleshooting. When you get a console + game, you stick it in and it works (with the exception of Skyrim on the PS3). That's not always guaranteed on PC. A lot of people don't want to deal w/ the headaches of a game that's giving them Error E2387x02347 every time they launch and scour the forums to find out it was an audio bug.

I love PC gaming but I could understand why people shy away from it. Personally, I wish steam had more emphasis on achievements / user identities like XBL and PSN. IMO, that's all that is missing from Steam to really put it on the same level.

Consoles are low investment fun. They're super relaxing to use.

PCs eventually get there, but there's a lot of investment in terms of time, education, and effort.

And if you buy a lot of games, the price differential eventually evens out and/or you end up with a gigantic collection whereas on console you would've sold your old games and have jack shit to play at times. On PC I have a gigantic fucking collection, on console I never had more than 10 games at any given time.

EDIT: And I rarely go to the store to buy shit. Gas saved. No irritating Kmart employees or long lines.
TotalBiscuit did a WTF for [Inversion] and gave it a favorable nod:

Hmm...it looks interesting, but the weird bugs might annoy me. I'll have to wait til it drops price even more. I liked Timeshift (made by the same developer) and other critically unfavorable TPS (The Club, Dark Sector (Another supposed "Gears Clone"), Bionic Commando), so this might be up my alley...for $5 XD. I'm glad that you and jer7583 brought my attention to this game, though.
Monitor can be your HDTV you already use for your console. Speakers, again, your HDTV. Keyboard and mice are cheap if you don't buy something branded by Razer. Look for a cheap Logitech or Microsoft mouse. $10 keyboards abound. So after those objections, really all you got is OS cost. That one I'll grant you, but use the evaluation version of Windows 8 for the next three months, then buy the supposedly discounted Personal Builder edition of Windows 8 ($80 I think?).

That's the only component that's actually expensive in your list unless you decide to make things difficult for yourself and think you just HAVE to buy a new monitor. You don't. If your PC is primarily for gaming, then treat it like you would a console. Slap it into your home theater or whatever you were using for your console and call it a day. You might toss in a USB extension cable from monocable or buy a wireless kb/m, but the latter is slightly more expensive. Of course, you also forgot the obligatory Xbox 360 controller and you again can go wired for more force feedback (I got mine used at Gamestop for $20) or wireless for more money.

The drivers for the Xbox 360 controller are built into Windows Vista, 7, and 8.

See, not expensive at all. That's why no one mentions those things. We didn't forget. We just knew better.

TLDR; $0 to use your HDTV, $10 for a wired keyboard, $8-20 for a wired mouse, $0 for speakers when you use your HDTV speakers or home theater speakers, $20 for a wired Xbox 360 controller and $0 for the time being to use the evaluation copy of Windows 8 for 90 days until Windows 8 launches with its discounted pricing ($40 for upgrade, $80 for personal builder license). If you happen to have a PC, any PC running Windows XP, Vista or 7, you could buy the $40 upgrade. What's that? $78 if you're buying upgrade, $118 if you're buying a full version in the incredibly unlikely event that you're a user reading this computer forum and you lack a PC or a Windows license you could upgrade.

I wouldn't really call that expensive since it'll be the last time you buy those things if you really want to skimp. Hell, if you have an existing Windows license, you won't even need a new one of those and that's the bulk of the cost in that list. If you're typing on this forum, you probably have a keyboard and mouse already. Now it's true, PC gaming is nicer with better keyboards and mice, but honestly it's not essential for someone replacing their consoles. In many cases, I'd imagine the console gamer refugee would be the one most likely to game mostly on an Xbox 360 controller anyway so what need do they have for a high end keyboard and mouse? Bonus, you're not paying $60 per year for Xbox Live and $150 for proprietary 250/320 gb hd's for your Xbox 360.
I won't argue that using an HDTV is a very good solution to the monitor issue if someone is planning on building a PC only as a gaming console to play games using an xbox controller. That's what I was going to do when I started my plan to build a PC but I think that part of the appeal of moving from consoles to PC is gaining access to games that you can't play on consoles or getting to play games where mouse and keyboard is the supposedly superior control set up.

Once you need to go mouse and keyboard, whether it be for gaming or using your computer as, you know, an actual computer for word processing, internet browsing, email, etc... using an HDTV is a bit trickier since you'll need to have a room configuration to accommodate that. You'll need a desk set up where you have a good viewing angle of the TV. This can be a permanent desk, in which case you'll get the benefit of being able to use cheap wired keyboard and mouse (you can probably acquire both for under $20 total if you don't already have extras), or a small desk/table/tray set up you can move into position or lap desk to use from your normal gaming chair, in which case you'll need to make sure you have a long cable on your accessories or you'll need to splurge on wireless which can cost a bit more. You can find mice and keyboards for

Also, an annoyance that will come up with that is the tiny text used in most software when you use an HD screen resolution. Not a big deal when you sit 1-2 feet from a monitor, but a potentially big pain the ass when you sit 10 feet from your TV. Not all software includes options to increase the size and increasing reducing resolution to fix the issue defeats the purpose of having a machine capable of rendering HD graphics.

Back to the OS point, there are obviously ways to get it on the cheap. The system builder route is a great one if you can't get an upgrade for some reason (Mac users). I've heard of people having problems with customer service with the system builder versions because, technically, those versions are supposed to be used in computers which you build and then sell to someone else. If you know what you're doing (or can use the internet), you shouldn't have any problems but people building their first PC may feel a bit insecure about that.

I made my initial post just to inform people moving over from consoles that there are potentially other things you need to account for besides the core components listed in the $500/$1000 builds if you plan on making a functional PC that can play games with a mouse and keyboard and not just what amounts to a more powerful XBox. The costs may not be very great but even if it ends up costing around $250 for the additions, that's a 50% increase in total cost if you were building a $500 PC and a 25% increase if you were building a $1000 PC.
Tony: I bought Guild Wars 2 several hours ago and haven't received an e-mail notifying me of my $5 credit yet. Does that take a few days to show up?
Actually no, we're going to run that as the DOTW on 9/9. It is taking a long time to QA all the Steam keys and get the pages created.

Probably supposed to be $4.99, 75% off.

When are the EA prices live (and how long for)?

Well if that is the complete list then I am a bit disappointed. The first round was great with the Spec Ops and MP3 bundles.

Don't get me wrong the prices are great, but aside from Amalur and ME3, the vast majority of these have been the same price before through Amazon. It's starting to seems more like Steam does just recycling the same deals over and over.

It's great for people who haven't been following the thread or Amazons deals. Just not so much for the rest of us.

I actually think that I would prefer to see slightly smaller levels of discounts with a wider variety of titles available.

At least I still have the 1c collection to look forward to assuming it actually gets completed before it gives Tony a heart attack trying to get it all together.

I'm actually very thankful that I have most of the stuff on sale up there so I can take a break! If I finish Spec Ops by then though I will probably bite on Binary Domain.

Great deals.
Nice list. Gonna have to pick up Sonic Pack+Condemned. Too bad the Ubi games aren't Steam :/
Some nice deals, I will have to go over them again when I get more time. Also, bought Spec Ops from you and beat it already. Awesome game and an awesome deal!

@TONY

Whatever happened w/ my suggested Sonic Boom Bundle?
Is that still coming?
Or did your higher-ups reject it?

What ever happened w/ my suggested "Game Of Thrones - Cyanide Bundle" for GOT: Genesis (RTS) and GOT: RPG (both games developed by Cyanide)?
Is that still coming?
Or did your higher-ups reject it?

Thanks Tony for getting SR 2 on sale!

Unfortunately, the list says it is non-Steam. Does anyone know if the powertools hack works with the non-steam version to get the game running correctly?
Hey Tony that nfs bundle and ea classics bundle are origin keys, arent they?
I can kinda speak for the NFS games in that bundle - even though I have them from elsewhere.

NFS: Shift 1, Shift 2, and Undercover should register on Origin.
I bought Shift 1 from D2D.
I have NFS: Undercover & Shift 2 from Retail.
ALL of those activated on Origin.

I have NFS: ProStreet from Retail and that NEVER would activate on Origin, when I tried. :(

I can't speak for Amazon DVG's versions of those games and if it's so special it'll let them all activate on Origin, but what I tell you could give you an idea of what to possibly expect/not to expect.

I can't speak for the EA Classics Bundle, though.

Did you touch the Spec Ops: The Line - MP portion?

Curious on your thoughts of it, since the lead designer at Yager Development is slamming his own game's MP mode, that he says was forced onto his game by 2K and that the MP mode was out-sourced (to DarkSide Studios to develop).

So it would be inappropriate for me to get into a detailed discussion around how deals are structured. It would be more appropriate for me to suggest that you do some research on how retail promotions work, namely how retailers work with the companies who produce products to create promotions (sales). Someone on this thread might have insight for you as well :).

I have to run out guys. I'm interviewing new roommates this week and have a bunch stopping over. If you're in Seattle please come down to our party tomorrow night :).

Also, I'll be adding more stuff to the list this evening, stay tuned.

I THINK i have the most exciting stuff up there right now though.
