Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

So...about account linking. We're in the process of transitioning to a system where your Origin purchases made on Amazon just show up in your Origin account after purchase. We will still offer code versions of some games while we transition to Instant Access.

If you have any specific questions about this, please ask.
I have some concerns with this.. Does this mean that we basically can't buy multiples of the same game once this system is fully in place? I hope the "We will still offer code versions of some games while we transition to Instant Access" part of this sentence doesn't mean only the old games will still have Origin codes and that the newer releases will have this new system forced upon us. I will probably not buy anymore Origin games on Amazon if this is the case.

One problem - EA is one of the leading game-publishers around. If EA left Amazon, that'd be lots of money lost.

A better solution is give the gamers the option to tie EA Origin game purchases on Amazon to your Origin account or you just get the option to just get the code to do what they want with.

Not cool :(

Makes me unable to buy the game code and gift it to someone else to activate on their account.

Is it anything like a lobotomy?
Old school lobotomy, yes. Trepanning itself is merely drilling or cutting a hole into the skull, it's normally only used these days in extremely rare instances of swelling or bleeding into the cranium to relieve pressure or drain fluid respectively.

I guess for Origin purchases I don't really care.

The aftermarket for Origin keys is relatively poor, and if I'm buying a game that's Origin I probably really want it and will definitely want it on my account.

I'd be upset if you had to link your Steam account, simply because of the number of bundles and the need to resell keys, but considering this is an Origin thing I guess I actually find it kind of convenient.

Kind of like how I don't mind Indie Royale doing it with Desura keys.

I wonder how that would affect items like the Syndicate two pack which was available during one of the previous sales. I guess both would instantly be redeemed on your origin account, wasting one. I'm throwing my hat into the "won't buy from this system" pile, as the majority of games on origin I want, I already own, and if I bought any it would be gifts for a friend.

I do recall last sale the linked versions of origin games went on sale and the keys did not, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I have most of what I want from Origin so far.  The last few things I've bought were gifted so the only hope would be Amazon actually implementing a gifting system since they have one for books.

Tony, what would happen if we didn't have an active/live Origin account yet?  I have a lot of backlogged Origin titles for the day when I have time to actually play them...

Would we just not be able to buy at all?

This is how I feel. If it was Steam I'd have to avoid Amazon bundles. If it's Origin then it's not a problem since I either buy complete packs or just DLC I'm missing.

I don't know anywhere I can find people who really want Origin keys in this "only on Steam" world.

Definitely a thumbs down from me.

Origin-based games are a hard-sell for me even in the best circumstances.

Unfortunately, I'll be staying far away from any system like this. I see it as giving me less options with no benefit.

I already have Dark Souls: PTD on PC.

I really like it - but, I'm kinda terrible at it. ;)

I wonder if G4WL actually gets patched-out, if Durante will need to re-work DSFix again.
Wonder no more, mortal.

How about it got a tiny patch, it did break the fix, it didn't remove GFWL, and Durante did update it again.

AHHHHHH!!!!!

Good point.

So yeah - it's probably likely Durante will update DSFix again - if Namco/From Software eventually ditch G4WL and switch over to full-blown Steamworks.

When there's Origin-required games and that same game ain't on Steam, then you have no choice in the matter.

EA been doing a lot of that w/ their own published-titles, since BF3.

-- i.e. see BF3, upcoming BF4, ME3, NFS: The Run, NFS: Most Wanted 2012, Syndicate FPS, Crysis 3, etc etc.

Same. Though it'd be cool if you could give it your login info and have it automatically pull stuff from Steam, GOG, Origin, etc..

Though my Steam times would probably be jacked up due to card idling.

It takes you through a registration process if you don't already have one. When I bought ME Trilogy in the LSS this is how it worked for me; I was given the option of entering my login info or creating a new Origin account.

It doesn't give you the time it will take to complete, but as far as Steam backlog trackers go you should check out steamcompletionist.net. It lets you log into Steam to pull all the games from your account, and you can then mark them as beat/unbeat/unplayed (auto)/to beat. It's the fastest way I've found to quickly see a summary of what percentage you've beaten or even played, plus, you get points for playing games in your "to beat" list. Sure they don't mean anything, but it's a fun novelty I think :)

Eh. I just create categories in my Steam library and assign games to them. I've got a "Completed 2012", "Completed 2013", "Online Only," "Extra Crap," and "Didn't Like" set of categories. That's easier for simply keeping track of beaten games. I don't care about achievements, so that site doesn't add anything IMO.

Well I categorize my Steam games by genre so that's nor really an option for me. To each their own though, whatever works for you :)

That is a good point about Crytek w/ EA partners program and Crysis 3 DLC's.

I mean - Crysis 2 did get back on Steam later, with a Maximum Edition (with game + ALL DLC's).

Tony,

Any Payday 2 deals in the future? Payday 1 n 2 bundle maybe?
Just asked about this :).

Cubetractor for its normal price? o_O
Lol it is 50% off, I read the wrong column in the price section of my spreadsheet, thanks for the heads up.

My question is..WHY??? Why Tony WHY??? Horrible....horrible news! And i think, from the "business" part, EA and Amazon are going to lose money with this new system. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!
I just picked one of the many posts on this to respond to by the way, no offense to those who wrote out feedback, I've captured it all and will be passing it along to the team.

There conversation around account linking is something we have regularly. I do want to comment on a couple of things though so we don't have conspiracy theories floating around for the next several months.

First, there are exactly 0 people at either EA or Amazon that I've met who are concerned with people giving away their extra keys. I've even had conversations with my EA rep (who lurks here sometimes) about it, that's how things like the Syndicate 2 pack came into existence.

One of the things the system does help with really well is key resellers who come and buy 29308432905482940582390482390482304922893439842309 copies of games when we have them on sale and then resell the keys over the next few months (we have a couple of them that post here, PM me regularly, and follow me around on Reddit lol).

This wasn't the primary motivation for the tech deployment though, the primary reason was to offer customers what we felt was an easier way to push content to their Origin account.

I read through a lot of +1 (or +500) in the past couple pages, so I'm going to try and summarize your feedback. Please copy and paste this bullet list in your replies and add to it if you want me to pass stuff along to the team as we discuss account linking:

1. You guys enjoy having extra keys when you buy packs for gifting and trading

2. The process for account linking could be better. Feel free to provide examples on how here

3. More feedback from you

4. More feedback from you

Thanks again, as always, this feedback is exactly why I try to maintain a presence here and keep the dialogue open.

Cheers,
Tony

3. I really like to buy know, and redeem keys later on, when I need them. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. If my Origin/Steam/whatever account gets hacked, corrupted or whatever, I'd like not to lose everything. We all know the stories.

4. Or I just gift a game if someone has more use for it than me. :bouncy:

i don't buy origin games and it doesn't affect me but just wanted to provide some feedback on linking. the major issue seems to be with bundles since at it's current state the keys can't keys be separated. origin would need some sort of inventory management feature in their client instead of it being immediately redeemed. another option would be to just allow xx number of keys to be purchased per account/ip address from amazon's site. gamefly has a simialr restriction althought it seems to be only one game per account. obviously this method isn't full proof but at least should deter some individuals.

I'm primarily a Steam Big Picture Mode user. I currently own 2 or 3 games on Origin and try to avoid it because I want to navigate with the controller as much as possible. My KB/M are typically hidden out of site.

That said, I really like the notion of instantly adding the license to my account because it's a pain point with how I use Steam right now. I just wish you did it for Steam (or Origin had a controller-centric UI).

I think it'd be better if it's OPTIONAL for tying my Amazon account to my Origin account.

And I'd also guess (since I have A LOT of different e-mail addresses), my Amazon and Origin account e-mails would have to be THE SAME.

EDIT:

1. You guys enjoy having extra keys. The way most Amazon bundle works allows me to split them with friend when I only want 1 or 2 things in them. If I didn't have that option, I wouldn't have bought many of the bundles.

While I doubt I'll end up w/ #3 often - I like that it's there. Maybe I buy a pack w/ numerous keys and it has something I own, I can just give the key to someone else. I don't want keys to go to waste, if it can be avoided.

Agree with #4.

if linking is initiated without any changes, another option would be to offer both linking and single game purchases. the single game purchase would  always cost 15% (or whatever percentage) more than the linking option even during sales. there would also be a percentage of keys available set aside to both options. so for example 70% of the keys would go to linking and 30% would go to single purchases. if the 30% of single keys are all sold it will not negatively affect linking.

edit: maybe just the second part of my idea can be implemented since it would essentially punish people who buy a lot.

This 100% confuses me.

which part? basically a pool of keys for linked and the non linked keys should be separate.
pool a linked keys allocate 70%
pool b non linked keys allocate 30%

Why would there even be a pool of unlock keys if the entire idea is not to have keys?

i should have said "pool a linked account" instead of keys.

pool b non linked account should offer keys for people who buy multiples but with a note "only limited quantities available"

a creed 3 $12 on steam pirce match? looking specifically for steam version if you have it.

So different pricing structure for the same exact product? Ummm, no.

And punishing people who buy a lot? Not the best business practice.

I can't read through 110 pages, do any of these XCOM game activate on Steam?
In general, XCOM: EU (2012) + its DLC's & The Bureau: XCOM Declassified do require Steam everywhere period.

I can't speak for the old MicroProse-made XCOM games.

EDIT:

I ain't bought that big XCOM EU Bundle, so I can't speak on old MicroProse-made XCOM games.

That's namely b/c I already bought the old MicroProse XCOM games directly through Steam, years ago.

So, I don't know if other re-released versions of MicroProse's XCOM games that are Non-Steam exist or not.

Not sure which portion of the conversation you're responding to but I want to make it clear, we absolutely want end users, gifters, etc. buying multiple copies to do said things with (Gift/Trade/etc.) what we don't want is key resellers buying thousands of copies at a time to resell over several months.

Cheers,
Tony

OK, seems I can't read.  The whole bloody thing is Steam, and a very good deal even though I already own the 360 version. Bought!!
