Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Happy to get Deus for $3. Original game is my favorite of all time, and I did enjoy DX:HR which I beat earlier this year.
I hope it has been improved for iPad 2. Feel pretty confident.

DELETED:  They combine a purchase I made about a week ago with this one.  Whoops.

Top down racer GP Retro is free for the first time ever. It is universal and supports the latest and greatest devices!

http://www.appshopper.com/games/gp-retro
The best part is the awesomely translated-to-English description:

> Run in 18 different tracks! ... Being careful to oil stains and puddles of water!

> Climb the CAREER becoming the World Champion and arriving to drive dream cars!

> Decide the controls of game you want

> Win the race and enhances the fans in the BONUS GAME on the podium!

Yeah, I'll second the Ascension recommendation.  Not technically a CCG, since there's no collecting.  More of a deck building game a la Dominion.  Haven't tried the latest expansion, but picked up the first two when they were on sale a while back.

True. They classify themselves (I think) as a CCG, but you're right; deck-building is more appropriate. Either way, great game.

I'm debating:

http://appshopper.com/games/marvel-puzzle-quest-dark-reign

If you look at the screenshots it looks free-mium but I'm not sure by how much. I dig puzzle quest (well, the older non-freemium ones)
Okay. It's a good thing you commented that you love Puzzle Quest.

CAG shrinks your link, so all I saw was ...uest-dark-reign.

I was about to not click it, until I saw those magical two words.

Being a huge fan of PQ 1 & 2 (and even Galactrix, though not as much), I'm going to have to try Marvel Dark Reign.

But I'm on the same train as you... wish I could pay 4 bucks and just have the damn game.

played it a little today. It's really fun. Seems like with PVP is where the IAPs shine

I played it a while. I'd rather just pay $20 bucks and get a full Puzzle Quest game. I wonder if they'll make more money off this one from microtransactions.
I just started it yesterday, and I like it so far, but I hate when the tutorial makes you spend reserves on things you don't necessarily want. I just had enough coins to get the level 2 guaranteed pack, and the game makes me buy a Hawkeye pack. Ugh.

Zen Pinball and the spinoffs are bad, but this is a matter of opinion, of course. Before we had Pinball Arcade I bought their games because that's the best that was available at the time. I do like some of their features, but the games (playfields and rules) are poorly designed and the physics aren't very good. It's mostly the bad game designs that bother me. But this is coming from a pin-head. YMMV.
Couldn't agree with this statement more. I bought a bunch of Zen tables prior to the PA release because it was the only game in town. Once Pinball arcade was released I cringe when seeing Zen. I like what Zen is trying to do with the licensing and it really could make for some great tables but their game physics is awful. These games are made for the video game generation that never played real pinball.

I am really hoping Farsight starts designing their own tables since they are starting to get down to slim pickings on the truly great real tables.

So far.. for Marvel Puzzle Quest... I can't help but facepalm at the dialog.  It's pretty bad.  Perhaps I played too much Puzzle and Dragons but it's hard to move backwards to this kind of match 3.

This is my one of my biggest pet peeves so far. It appears that it only happens for the first few scenarios, though.

I'm playing the Juggernaut stage right now, and it's not forcing me to upgrade/heal anymore.

The other thing that really annoys me has to do with the rewards. Each level has a few different rewards that you can win randomly (covers, iso-8, coins). This is listed before you enter the level, saying 1/4 rewards earned. So by playing that level again, you would think that you can earn one of the other 3, right? Not so fast. You could win the reward you already got, or even one that's not shown ... which, for me, has been 20 iso-8. This totally defeats the purpose of replaying the levels to upgrade. I tried 9 times to get the other Iron Man cover on a level, and every time I got 20 iso-8. Waste of time.

I personally can't stand the 'model' ... I really want to support Plants Vs Zombies 2 but I can't bring myself to buy anything other than the 'full game' ... they should make an IAP called fuck IAPs!!! ... I'd pay for that one. :)

I for one am digging Marvel Puzzle Quest. The time-to-heal mechanic was helpful to get me to go to bed last night and go to the gym today. ;)
And like with Shufflepuck Cantina and Scurvy Scallywags, I don't mind buying a $1-$2 IAP for a free game I like - as much as I despise most F2P tactics.

Seriously! PvZ2 is great until you realize that you can't just pay $5 or $8 or whatever reasonable flat price to have access to the full game.

As for Marvel Puzzle Quest, any way to earn coins? Mostly been playing the tournaments and replaying early missions to get all rewards, so it's possibly I missed the opportunity to earn coins.

Anyone who is playing Marvel Puzzle Quest, be sure to check out the weekend tournament.  It's been a great way to rack up a bunch of Is0-8 very quickly in comparison to the regular levels.  Also, Venom seems to be pretty powerful so far.
