Call of Duty Black OPS

Saw the Call of the Dead vid on joystiq earlier, pretty stoked on the Escalation MP now. I didn't pick up first strike,so the appeal of the Zombie Campaign-esque map will make my 15 bucks better spent on it.

Hmm, I wasn't really excited about Escalation until I saw the trailer for it, makes me want to get it..... I'm still not gonna pay for it though, too many GPT sites out there to waste actual money lol :D

So... anybody playing Call of the Dead? I've only played the campaigns in COD before, never touched the multiplayer, but I'm intrigued by this. I'd like to know what it's all about before I put down my $15 though.

If you've never played zombie mode before, play what came on the disc first. I'd actually recommend getting some buddies and playing the maps in order beginning with World at War. They've added something new to every new map so if you jump into Call of the Dead having not played zombies before, you're going to be lost. There's more to it than just a horde mode.

Also a lot of people don't like zombie mode, so there is always that chance. It would suck to drop $15 and end up hating the mode when you could have just tried out existing maps.

New maps are really nice! I wish I could play more than I got to b4 work.... :(

You are warned: Hotel map do not rush flag A if you spawn on it to start the game. Every time I played the map some clown will shoot the car in the casino beside the flag and is explodes and kills the whole team capping A.... You spawn right there and its a percect set-up... It's hilarious once but then not so much as other team caps C and charges B. Mistakes were made....

Not a review per se, but here are a few random thoughts:

- George looks like Stan Lee
- you would think there would be more dialog than usual given they probably paid for the actor's likenesses, but it feels like less dialog than normal.
- The map is about the same size as Ascension.
- The box locations seem easier to get to than usual
- The new gun is pretty funny. It turns zombies into people and they attack George. There's also a new sniper rifle
- George definitely makes this map a lot more difficult than previous maps. We only made it to wave 9 (multiple times) after a few hours(routinely get to the 25-35 range on other maps).
- The ice slide caught us by surprise, pretty cool
- 3 players seemed to work better than 4 for us. The box was way more generous with the good weapons with 3 people and more stingy with 4 and we made it just as far
- I haven't tried the new perk yet, or found the Pack-a-Punch machine either
- looks like the Gersh Gravity bomb was removed from the box. matryoshka dolls are the special this time

If you like zombie's you'll you'll like it. It's definitely the same 'ol zombie goodness. If you never liked zombie mode before, this won't change your mind. Although there is less "camping" by holding a zombie alive. In fact, in 3 hours of play, we didn't hold one once. It was too difficult with George roaming around.

The new perk machine (at the top of the lighthouse) Deadshot Daiquiri apparently causes your aim assist to always go to the zombie's heads so you get the additional points for headshot kills. Also, it appears they did away with the ability to make crawler zombies with a grenade since unharmed zombies would consistently die. I haven't gotten the humanizer gun yet but it sounds awesome. George is a tall bastard!

Are you sure about the grenade/crawler thing? I'm pretty sure I made some crawlers last night. Problem is, if they crawl into the water they'll die anyway.

I like the new maps more than the first pack.

Hotel is HUGE! you could probably fit 6 Nuketowns in it.
Convoy has more camping spots than I like, but it has nice scenery. Gas was a whole lot cheaper then!
Stockpile reminds me of a map from World at War (name escapes me). Dingbat crushed by the doors closing.
Zoo looks like a dark Carnival from MW2, but bigger.

I'm not much of a zombie player, but this one is way harder with George running after you. And definitely DON'T shoot at him. It makes him mad.

Overall a much better purchase than the first pack.

I'm liking the new maps so far--agree with the above that they're better than the first map pack. I haven't tried the new Zombie map yet, not a huge fan of that mode.

Hotel: I like this one the best as it's a good combination of cover and more open areas. Not a lot of long shooting lanes, so not a lot of snipers. People also, for the time being, are moving around a lot and not doing a lot of camping.

Stockpile: I like this one a lot as well. I can see it being plagued by campers down the road though. But it's a good size, and has the central building to fight for control of.

Zoo: This one is good as well. A bit non-descript in layout, but the mono-rail is a nice touch. I can see this one having the most camping eventually though.

Convoy: This was my least favorite, but it did grow on my after playing it several times. But it is the biggest and most open of the maps so it was a really haven for snipers several matches, and those are my least favorite types of maps. But I'm learning you can mainly sneak around the edges and flank the snipers most of the time.

Never been much of a zombie player but yall got me wanting to give it a go again.

Zoo has a great patrole spot on the steps overlooking B. I love thst spot but it's crowded now it's a fight to get and maintain control. U overlook B, run out on monorail and can overlook A, plus..... If you look down steps on other side you can see anyone leaving that side of C.

I found out today on convoy you can run/jump from one over pass to other from truck to truck to flag to missle and climb the highway sign. Kept getting behind people watching the steps and ladders. :)
So is Escalation multiplayer only?
Yes.

4 multiplayer maps and 1 zombie map. CoD games don't get single player DLC (at least not that I can recall).

I am a Canadian citizen and cannot use this code I won it form a Machinima contest and I want to trade it for something on steam Contact me if interested . thanks (message on this site)

Tried the new zombie mode last night with randoms. Very fun George is a beast! Keep shooting him for shits and giggles he speed up real fast and you gotta high tail it back to the water to calm him down. You get an achievement for killing him, good luck with that... :)

My party of 3 took out George last night. It took a lot of work, but damn it was satisfying. We didn't make it very far into the next level(16) though. George wore us down too far.

Anybody having problems with Zoo?
I can't seem to play it when in a party, they get in (with one red bar each) and i get dumped or vise versa.
No issues with other maps.

I'm getting a lot of lag on the Escalation playlist, it's literally unplayable. No problem with the original playlists though, so guess I'll just be sticking to that

Been playing this the last couple days, until my ebay auction ends and i send it away. I have been trying to get all my kills with the Flame Thrower, Tomahawk, and Ballistic Knife. I got called a modder a few matches ago because i was using a "fully automatic M14". I guess they never used the Commando before. Hmmmmm. I have my flame thrower on a golden commando.

Here is a new clip i made. I had a cool tomahawk. It hits the crane, then spins down into the enemy. LOL. Some extra flame thrower mixed in.

"Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests."

Gross.

the free Facebook bit sounds interesting. and since people already spend $15 on each map pack, I'm sure some will opt for this. depending on how much content they offer, it might not be much worse than dropping that $15 on each map pack honestly...

im sorry, but they do not "support" these games enough to justify a monthly fee. and unless they announce something that really impresses me, i see no reason at all to give them money every month. i mean this isnt a mmo... if im going to pay a monthly fee i want perfect spawns, perfect matchmaking (no more spawning into certain defeat) no more spawn trapping, tons of maps, DEDICATED SERVERS, ad a bunch of other crap i cant think of at the moment.

I wouldnt pay a monthly fee for something like that. I just hope non paying owners of MW3 can use the theater mode like black ops has without having to pay for it. That and you can buy the map packs like normal.

I could not agree with you more. I just read the WSJ article and nearly crapped my pants. I will definitely not pay a monthly fee for COD. Period. I don't care that much about map packs and the like. Most of the DLC they release is garbage anyways. Can anyone remember a COD map pack that released with positive fanfare? I can't.

As long as I can still play online in TDM, then it's fine. If they take that away, I'm more than happy playing the "older" CODs online until they shut down those servers. After that, I'll find a new game to play. It's really that simple.

I loved WSJ's description of COD as a "hyper-realistic combat-simulation game".

Best I can tell is that COD:Elite is something like Halo: Waypoint. How many people would pay a monthly fee for that? Then again, I can't wrap my head around paying $15 for 4-5 maps but that seems to be going gangbusters for them so what do I know?

If they include everything worthwhile for buying the game in the first place there's no reason to pay an additional subscription fee (on top of XBL). If they require a paid subscription for functionality that used to be available "out of the box", they'll just end up pushing people to other shooters. It'll be competing with BF3 and a GoW3 around its release. Let alone the gazillion other FPS'.

I'm really glad to see/read that the majority of people are refusing to buy into COD: Elite...no pun intended. If no one buys it, then it will simply go away. Excellent.

Taking a handful of people on a site called CheapAssGamer is probably a poor representation of the 20 million(?) CoD players out there.

Actually I think it's a great representation. CAGs have an eye for value within the video game industry. Most of us will buy games pandered by critics at the right price. If we don't think it's a good value for gamers, then it means something is wrong.

People will buy into it, no doubt. However, I think the majority of gamers are going to wise up and thumb their noses at Activision's nonsense.
