Bond 50

In celebration of James Bond's monumental golden anniversary, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment today unveiled BOND 50, a collectible box-set featuring all 22 James Bond films on Blu-ray Disc for the first time in one complete offering. The longest running film franchise of all time, the Bond 50 collection marks the debut of nine James Bond films previously unavailable in high definition Blu-ray. Fans around the world can pre-order now with participating online retailers.

BOND 50 showcases fifty years of Bond neatly packaged into one cool, sleek collectable box-set featuring all six iconic James Bond actors. Produced using the highest possible picture quality and audio presentation, the collection includes all 22 James Bond feature films from Dr. No to Quantum of Solace and more than 130 hours of bonus features including some new and exclusive content

Pretty steep price but great for huge Bond fans. Hopefully price goes down and hopefully release date is announced soon

The packaging for larger box sets (10+ discs) tends to be quite clumsy, laborious, (obviously) expensive, and almost always arrives irreparably damaged in some fashion.

Also, I already own the existing Bond Blus (unless I missed a blu release of Peter Seller's Casino Royale), so I'll hold out for a sale on individual releases, tempting as it may be. I'm not interested in contributing more to Timothy Dalton's residual paycheck than I have to.
Maybe i'm missing something but this isn't a limited set. Why not just wait for a price drop? I'd buy it but $200 is a bit too steep.
It might be considered steep, but you can't deny that it's still a good value at $9 a movie, and that's not including the 130+ hours of extras. Things of course do go down overtime, but when you consider the value already I don't blame anyone for pre-ordering

The 1967 Casino Royale was, indeed, released as an exclusive to Best Buy stores on May 29, 2011. It's going to be widely released in Feburary sometime, IIRC.
no kidding? thanks for that info.
No problem, as far as I know it's been $14.99 the whole time it's been at BB and the pre-order for it on Amazon is currently $15.99... so if you live in the US and want this flick on BD, it's a no-brainer!

In the (apparently very large) boat of owning all that has come out on BR so far (excpet for the 2nd casino royale; had no clue it was on BR. I do have the DVD version with the first casino royale as well though). Kind of a crap move to release the others on BR first here after already releasing so many of the others individually/in 3-packs. It's a big, fat pass, but I will certainly be looking for the individuals for the ones I don't have when/if they come out.

...And "all" 22? There are 25 James Bond films (Never Say Never Again, and the other 2 Casino Royales). It should say all Eon Productions James Bond films or something like that. "All" 22 James Bond films is simply not true.

"All 22 James Bond films" is a completely valid choice of words... in the eyes of EON productions (and even a good number of Bond fans) there are only 22 James Bond films with 23 come the time of Skyfall.

The first Casino Royale from 1954 was just a TV episode that took a lot of terrible liberties but stayed fairly close to the main plot whereas the 1967 version was primarily a satire/parody that didn't even pretend to be serious through at least half of the film.

Never Say Never Again is the closest to being acceptable due to the fact that it has Sean Connery, but it's just a remake of Thunderball... so that takes it out of the running.

It's true that some of the official Bond films are so close to remakes of some of the earlier ones due to an overwhelming amount of similarities in terms of plot and characters, but having 3 Casino Royales and a full-fledged remake of Thunderball in the complete package would just create confusion for less intelligent consumers. I could see the full version of the 1954 CR being included as a bonus feature at some point, but that's the only one of the three.

So, under normal circumstances, you'd be looking at around $50, so you'd be spending $150 (or $70, if the UK set is shown to be region free) to get the remaining 9 movies plus rebuying the old movies. If they end up releasing at more than $16.67 each for the US set and not counting your initial purchase of the previous movies, it's cheaper to pick them up in the combined set after trading in the previous movies. For the UK set, if region free, it would be $7.77 per movie after the trade-in of the old movies, so that's certainly a better option if it's region free.

Some random checks of the old Bond movies on BluRay show as region free on http://regionfreemovies.com/region/free , so it may be something that is in our favor for the UK set being region free.

Thanks for the list shrike. I may go ahead and trade in my discs, I really like having the big gift sets as opposed to single blu's.

I don't own any Bond movies...... Yes I'm ashamed of myself.

What are these other release people speak of?
I don't mind packaging, and all that so what is the best way to get ALL of the movies.

I don't mind packaging, and all that so what is the best way to get ALL of the movies.
The Bond movies were released on BluRay in multiple ways.

There were three-movie sets that came out, which covered nine of the movies.

There were four movies not released in the three movie sets, as well as the other nine movies released individually. Some of the individual releases were also released as steelbooks, which I think was a Best Buy exclusive.

Never Say Never Again was a standalone release and not part of the thirteen movies mentioned above, and it's also not part of the Bond 50 release, again because it's not a "real" Bond movie.

Casino Royale is another one that's not part of the Bond 50 set because it's also not a "real" Bond movie. The 60's version is currently a Best Buy exclusive.

MGM had money issues and went into bankruptcy, so the other Bond movies were in limbo for being released. That's been fixed and that's why we're seeing Skyfall being release this year and these movies in a huge movie pack in time with that release.

So, if you bought the movies previously, you're likely to have either three three movie sets and four standalone titles, or thirteen standalone titles, not counting NSNA or CR.

There are nine movies that haven't been released separately and at this time are only part of the 22 movie Bond 50 pack. They should be released in separate releases, though we're only speculating to when. Some people don't want to double-dip the releases and will wait out the other nine movies on their own, others will trade/sell what they have and pick up this release with all of the movies in it.

Thank you god sir for the cliffnote.

I had gotten lost with it all. I think I might use my credit, and buy this seeing as I have $170 in AMZ credit.

Happy to help. I ended up putting in a preorder for the Amazon UK version to lock in the price and in the meantime, we'll see how it works out to see if it's region free or not. Can always pick up the Amazon US one at any point.

I think I'll trade in my Bond movies that I have and just pick up the complete collection, double-dip be damned. Most of them I picked up out of pocket for not a lot of money, so it's not a huge loss on the double dip.

So has it been confirmed how the films will be packaged? Do each have their own cases or is it some sort of booklet?

I have a feeling it's a booklet, in which case, I'll have to wait for individual releases :(

Doesn't look like it'll be individual cases from the look of it. I'm guessing some sort of cardboard folding with disc slots. I'm picturing something along the lines of that Planet of the Apes blu set, but of course, many more discs.

Yup, that's my hangup about following Shrike's plan and trading in my individual titles so that I can buy this set -- I do not want to give up my individual cases for some box that won't fit on my shelf and will become a storage problem. I'm so over buying any of these collector's sets that aren't easy to store at this point.

Its in my gold box today for $189.99. I already have 9 of the movies................ hmmmmmm.....

The posts above about the individual cases (or lack there of) makes me hesitant as well.

I would that the Planets Of The Apes is a likely model that we'll be looking at.

I traded mine in, dropped them off with UPS this morning, so I'm down on the big box set plan. I'm hoping that the UK set ends up being region free, so that'll save some money.

Random note that it's now up to $269.99 as of today.

Hope people got their pre-orders in early, since it may stay this high for a while.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd think bumping the price up 70 bucks after having it for 200 (already pricey) for weeks will cliffdive the sells. Hopefully it does and makes them drop the price again cause I didn't pre order -_-

No question that it was a dumb move to jack the price up $70, though it won't stay there long.

Could have also been a mistake in dropping the price down to $169.99 and they just fat-fingered it.

The UK set also went up 10 pounds to 89 so maybe they low-balled the MSRP around the world on it when it was first announced.

Either way, I'm thrilled I got in on the UK pre-order when it first went up as $122 (US) shipped is a hell of a lot better than Amazon's price domestically and I'm going to wager nobody is going to be in that price range at release date or even Black Friday this year at least. If it's not region free I still have a modded Oppo so I'm set.

I have pre-orders on the UK and US sets, so if the UK one is region free, then we're good to go for anyone that preordered the UK set.

If not, then the US set will have to do, which thankfully hit my gold box.

I'm betting that it may drop lower than the initial $199.99 MSRP, since I doubt nothing will happen to it while it's at $269.99.

the way UK Blu Ray been priced it make sense to pick up a region free Blu Ray player. Probably save more money in the long run.

There's a good possibility it might be region free as most of the UK releases, despite what they said on amazon uk, turned out to be,

Also I'm not sure if everyone knows this, but at Blu-ray.com there's a thread showing how you can add a firmware to select Insignia Blu-ray Players to make them Region Free. This is without a doubt the cheapest and easiest way to get a region free player here, but sadly Insignia's build quality isn't so good (based on reviews). Their cheapest player is selling at bestbuy.com for $49.99 (refurb).

That's the main thing that's been holding me back from picking up an Insignia. If I start investing in a collection of region B/C blu-rays, I want to know that I'm reliably going to be able to play them. I keep eying the Oppo players, but man that's a lot of money...

Pre-ordered from the UK after seeing the price go up domestically. I guess I'm lucky, cause as a computer guy I've been messing with video and burning blu-rays for years. If for some reason I can't play these on my PS3's, etc. (and I'll bet we can), then I'll just use a ripping app to remove the region coding, and return to 50GB Blu without it. And god knows since I have all the movies on DVD already, I can always go back to those in a pinch. ;)

It's on my short list when I go looking for a standalone player.

Dropping a BDRW drive in my HTPC helped out with 1080i 50Hz items, as my copy of Doctor Who S5 is region free and 1080i 50Hz.

I thought Doctor Who S5 was 1080p25... maybe I'm wrong about that.

EDIT: Yup, after doing a bit of research it looks as though 1080p25 isn't an accepted Blu-ray format and is encoded into 1080i50... I guess it would look just as good in that case, since it's still getting the full resolution of the 25 frames every second!

If you order at amazon you get an exclusive hardcover book filled with Bond posters. This is an excerpted edition of this upcoming book.

Here's what the packaging looks like for the Bond 50 set. It is indeed a cofee table book style set with disc slots as I thought (warning: huge pic):

I'm... going... to... be... so... broke. Sigh.

Glad to see there's finally a release date, one that hopefully falls at least a month or two before the WiiU launch. That'd make my life a hell of a lot easier.

I normally despise the book style cases, but I don't mind this one too much. Given the number of discs they're dealing with, this appears to be the best of their options. I also have faith that it isn't going to be half-assed, but I could be wrong.

Like you said, the special features aren't surprising. They really created a fairly comprehensive set of features over the years, so a full overhaul doesn't seem to be in the cards. At least they added a new disc, so that's something.

ssjmichael, in the comments on that Blu-Ray.com post I linked to, there's discussion that the extras from the Casino Royale CE may not be included, and the extra content that would have gone into the Quantum Of Solace CE that never came out.

Yeah those aren't included unfortunately. They designated just 1 disc for each movie so that's probably the reason the extra disc that came with Casino Royale wasn't included. They should have made an exception for that of course, as well as for QoS.

No reason why I could see they'd exclude those items from the big pack, though we might get lucky and they'll include them by release time.

Has anyone heard anything about the individual releases of the 9 previously unreleased blurays?

I really feel like such a sucker for buying each individual release up to this point. I'm an idiot for thinking I could complete my collection.

They'll surely be released at one point, but I can't see them coming out before this set as they are banking on some who own many of the existing films to double dip to get the new ones.

By next year some of them should start to be released individually.

Most likely between April and July of 2013, if I had to take a guess.

Yeah, I'd say we'd be looking at individual releases 6 months-to-a-year after the boxset at best. It makes sense to try and wrangle $200-300 out of people while they can, mainly because... and I say this in the most mercenary sense possible... Bond DVDs and Blu-rays are a bargain bin product. There are so many of them that their biggest sell-through rate will be marked down to between $5-10, where people will see them and think "Why not?". It's like when the Blu-rays first came out, no one but hardcore fans were going to spend $20 on individual releases and, even if they did, were likely going to be highly selective with them. So, really, there's not much of a reason to discontinue the boxset as soon as possible. I mean, just look at the DVD releases from the boxed Ultimate Editions on... there were at least 3-4 different releases, each getting cheaper and cheaper as they went. I love these damn things, obviously, but it's a really tough series to sell physical copies of.

As a sidenote, I'm really disappointed in them simply reissuing the Quantum of Solace blu-ray. It seems clear that this set pretty much kills any chance of the previously announced QoS SE coming out, which is a goddamned shame. The deleted scenes and different ending alone made that a desirable product.

According to bluray.com it looks like QoS is even missing special features that were included in the original bluray release. Is this correct?

Is it possible that they'll release a separate QOS Special edition? Seems to me that Sony always does the 'movie cash' thing, so a new QOS (and probably a rereleased Casino Royale) with Skyfall movie cash on it would probably sell.
This dropped to $186 at amazon
According to DVDPriceSearch.com, it's a match to Walmart's price of $186.28:

Hopefully this will go one for a little while and we'll get some further price drops as Walmart and Amazon go back and forth in seeing who has the lowest price.

I know this set is still 2 months out yet, but anyone think there's any hope that this might be available at release for < $150, or is that just a fantasy? I really want this, but that's a whole lotta money to spend, especially if someone going to have it for < $100 even when Black Friday rolls around.

I wish. I'm not entirely hopeful that we'll see single releases in the near future, too. Call me a cynic, but I can't see stores stocking up copies of "Diamonds are Forever" in huge numbers. As much as I might want them to.
