DiRT 2 - Gen. Discussion & Info - 9/8
As far as the PS2 games go, WRC 4 & 5 are the best and have the most upgrades. 5 even would have hazards to avoid such as passing slow damaged vehicles or taking care around wrecked cars with the codriver on the side of the road waving for you to slow down. 2 & 3 are still good and of course have different rosters and teams. RBR is great, but very technical and punishingly hard to a degree. You may already have it on PC anyway. I got all four WRC games, RBR, and a couple other lesser games a few years ago all off of ebay for no more than $20 w/shipping each or less. Most were less, only WRC 5 was that much and that's cause it hadn't been out long at the time. This reminds me that now that my gaming rig is back up I need to play Xpand Rally.

Thanks for the heads up on HD Theater. I have HD with DirecTV so I'll have to check and see if I get it. I didn't even know about Rally Torrents so I'll have to check that out too.
Yeah. I liked RBR, but I have to be in the right mood to play it otherwise I get a bit too worked up. I will be sure to try and find the imported WRC titles, the attention to detail really sounds like theyre worth it.

Definitely check out the torrents and catch up on anything you might have misssed. It has been an interesting season so far and has just gotten really interesting (you may have noticed if youve checked the leaderboards lately).

Just read the review on IGN:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/102/1021176p1.html

Sounds good to me, but a major disappointment on reading that only around 20% of all the races are pure time-trial rally races.

It was $56.99 on Amazon yesterday but is back to $59.99, I might just wait until it drops back to $56.99 to apply the ECA discount so that this game can hold me off until ODST.

Yea I read that review and have to say I'm actually glad they're doing what they're doing. Sorry rally sim fans but I don't think there is enough of you to compare against the pure adrenaline racing junkies out there. I'm glad they've added in more GRID features, that's a great game to pull ideas from. I can't wait, I'm glad they have a variety of events and gameplay modes to do but maybe if they added in the locational races like in GRID you could have people who want to do rally races or other races not affecting how you progress in your single player campaign. Of course you'd have to go do the events you don't want to do, cough drifting cough, at the end if you want 100% completion. ^^
That quote is great. i agree with you . i started playing Dirt 1 again and like the interface way more .
The Dirt 1 interface is the coolest and you can see the evolution from CMR 2005 which was cool as well and kinda similar.

Like their comments on the americanized extreme take in D2. I don't see much of the whole extreme sports stuff on a day to day basis so it's not getting to me that much. Trailblazer's pretty close even though the cars are more overpowered, definitely disappointed there's no hill climb. I'd love to see ice racing come back like Rallisport had. Ice racing seems nuts to me when I see it on Speed. Love when parts of the track are melted and the metal studs in the tires kick sparks like mad.

To be fair about the lack of rally, even though I want more rally myself, when Codemasters announced Dirt 1 they emphasized that it's a game based on off road racing not necessarily rally. We all expect rally since that's the lineage of the series and with CMR still the figure for the first game it was to be expected that rally would be the most prominent.

It would be awesome if Codemasters made an actual CMR Rally game again that focused solely on rally or got the rights to Rally America, wrestled the unused WRC from Sony/Evo Studios, or even got Dakar (I think Akklaim may still have those rights), but in this day and age rally is ignored in the US and therefore it's a niche game, ie not as profitable.

My internet cut out last night while editing my last post and I'll DP to bump this back up. From the preorder Dirt 2 get $10 off thread:
9-3 UPDATE!!!
Gamestop has changed the deal! The coupon is now $10 off a $50 purchase at Journeys. Boo to GS in changing this. This was noticed on the website a few days ago and I preordered it yesterday to confirm and cause I'm getting it with my credit there on day one anyway. Anyway, no more chance at ten bucks off the actual game.

I was under the impression that Sony lost the rights to WRC in 2008 and that the reason why they have not repurchased from FIA is because, much like the F1 license, the price has gone up. I think this may be why there has been no talk of a WRC title for PS3 title despite having the market in Europe. A decent Dakar game would be a nice change, particularly if they went hardcore like "LeMans 24" did and made some options for timing adjustments*. I dont know about Rally America, it seems like at that point you may just want to make a generic rally game and save money. I dont need a licensed events or drivers as long as I have licensed cars...

I think most rally fans would understand we are a niche, but there is a big difference between a pure rally game and a dirt racing setup. Currently most games downplay the penalty you get for contact, whether by a lack of damage, penalties or stupid AI. This lack of penalty makes a game like DiRT 2 easier because instead of driving smart I just have to drive aggressive. I found DiRT 1 to have a real lack of challenge because of this and its the same reason that most Gran Turismo vets will tell you the real challenge in GT is not beating all the races, but getting gold on all the license tests.

*LeMans 24 had a simulation mode where you could run the entire 24-hour race in various timeframes ranging from a few minutes to the full 24-hours.

Hehe, funny review from CVG:http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=222602
Forget the original Colin McRae: Dirt ever happened. If you have it, snap it in half and whisk it out the window at your neighbour's cat. Dirt 2 is the game the first one should have been - a petrol-fuelled orgy of angry cars, weighty powerslides and lush, detail-filled mud porn.

The original Dirt was a solid game with plenty of cars, events and some pretty nice visuals. For that, it was praised. But if, like this writer, you're a long-time Colin McRae fan, you'd have built up resentment for the game's arcadey approach to what used to be a very serious racing series. Cars lacked weight, you didn't respect speed or corners, and the handling just felt wrong.

Forward two years and Codemasters has well and truly got its arse into gear. This is a proper rally game. You know that the moment you floor in into the first bend thinking you can make it round and the car just carries its speed, drifting sideways and slamming door-first into a wall. You've got to be skilled - slow that bad boy down and put it into corners properly.

Note:This is under the PS3 review section.

Another review, this one from Gamesradar(http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/dirt-2/review/colin-mcrae-dirt-2-super-review/a-20090902102931860058/g-2009022015428492015) and it sounds like GRID offroad which is awesome.

Can't remember where I found it before, but it was probably early 2007 when no new WRC game had been out for a little bit and Motorstorm was done. At that point they fully acknowledged that they were focused on Motorstorm 2 and there would be no more WRC games even though they would have the license for a couple of years or something. Anyway, funny you mention the GT series cause I found this referenced on another site as well as Wiki:
Polyphony Digital, who bought the rights to include official WRC cars and tracks in their upcoming simulation video game Gran Turismo 5. Therefore the series will no longer be released through independent games.
I really wanted a full WRC game, but at least it'll be represented somewhat. PD's attention to detail is incredible so hopefully they'll do it right although I wasn't super impressed with the rally racing in GT3/4 although I was no longer impressed with the overall driving in those games at that point either. A source said they had NASCAR rights, too, but EA has those so I don't know.

That's exactly the way I've been thinking a Dakar game should be made. LeMans was awesome, especially the ability to play hardcore. I should go back and play that more. Gotta get out the DC.

As far as a RA game, I think the license would be pretty cheap as they're dying for exposure and legitimacy and it would give the game a real world connection which should be better than a generic feel. There are several different classes from street cars up that could give the game a good structure and just do the extreme feel for the competition at the xgames. That small dose should be ok. Maybe include some non-RA stuff like hill climb races like Pike's Peak, etc.

I always wanted the WRC games to expand and include a JWRC circuit, too, as it would have provided more depth and cars and a progressable career mode.

Amen on the gold for license tests. I rarely got the rewards for those as there would usually be one test in each group that i could not quite get.

Has anyone here grabbed the game?

For me, personally, it's one of the best racers I've played in a while. The presentation is ridiculously good, the graphics are insane, and the new additions to the game (friendships with other drivers, team events, customizing the cars, the sick online system they have set up, and the new modes they laid out) really put DiRT 2 in the top tier of games in the racing genre. I think it's the perfect fusion of GRID and DiRT 1, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Good to hear . I have mine paid in full just waiting for me but im to sleepy to go get it .

I tried the demo last night, I was really impressed by the graphics and the way the cars handle but i just suck at the game. I'm definitely going to have to play some more to see if I get better.

Got my shipping confirmation today, should be soon with Newegg and all. Yea Grid+ Dirt is what Gamesradar said and I can't wait. The only negatives I heard are the menus (virtual way of) and floaty physics. I can't say that upsets me very much lol.

That's what happened to me, but I was having such a good time I practiced the demo tracks a few times. I got way, way better in a short amount of time and ended up picking it up today.

THIS GAME ROCKS!!!! I just got done playing a VERY long session, and only stopped because I was worried my 360 was going to cook the disc. I played about half online and half offline. The offline career tour mode is very hard to stop playing. It seems like they pick the perfect time to throw new events at you. I've had no problems with lag online as well.

If anyone is interested in getting some Live matches in Pro Tour going definitely add me as a friend.

Did I mention this game is awesome and the achievements are definitely easy as well.

Auugh, my tracking info says its in Syracuse, its close, hopefully I'll have it tomorrow. I can't wait to play and reading xbox forums it looks like they did online right with a no collisions option.

Amazon is taking forever to get my copy shipped. Anyone have any luck at picking up a game at a B&M location and returning their Amazon copy once it arrives? Really itching to play this game. =]

I was gonna do that with Batman. Unfortunately, Amazon had a different UPC sticker underneath the plastic packaging. Ended up having two copies of Arkham Asylum. Luckily, the game was hot and I sold it to someone I knew for full retail price.

Does the game scale your opponents with whatever car you're driving? I just went through my first 10 races in one sitting and by the end it was getting harder to keep up, especially in that one race type where you have to own/control the different segments of the track. I was curious if that was because I was still using the default starter car.

I haven't seen or heard of any feature like that, but I wouldn't be too surprised. I do know that for certain types of races, there are certain racers who will give you a run for your money every time. It depends on the person's strengths for each race type (I think you can view each driver's strengths somewhere in the menu).

I have a question I wanted to ask everybody who owns Dirt 2 and played it. Are you having any problems with the game like Stats and Achievement sticker/post it's always being thrown down and taking forever to load? Its like the game is stuck there... It happened to me 4 times over the past week and it got annoying because i had to always quit to the dashboard and reload the game.

Same goes with downloading ghost and racing against them. I always keep getting that download error message and DIRTNET offline?

Finally, the game has arrived and I'm installing it to the hard drive, expecting to play many hours of this lol. I can't believe I'm reading the manual.

Awesome, to me this game has a bit of DiRT (obv), GRID, and NFS:pro Street.

Finally got to put some good time into this game, and I gotta say, I'm really enjoying it. Easily one of the best racer's I've played on the X360 to date.

Although I wish they woulda steered clear of the X-Games theme, it's still a great game and a solid sequel to it's predecessor. Will be picking up GRID here sooner or later and giving it a test drive once I finish up DiRT 2. =]

I think its funny that Ken Block wants to do me, "Hey lets hang out after the race!" Dude, worry about how you're driving in the race first lol.

I think it's rubberband AI which progressively gets tighter.

It's moving to the front of the backlog now.

I love this game! The whole Xgames theme isn't really bothering me. I guess I really limit my exposure to xtreme sports so it's not overloaded on me yet, plus if hooking the game up with a popular subculture is what it takes to get a rally game out, at least I get a rally game. It's a great offroad racing game and definite improvement over the great first game. I just really want a pure rally game now more than ever. Before Dirt 1 what was the last console rally game? Rallisport 2? Richard Burns Rally on xbox? I like DiRT2, but I wish Codemasters would make a real rally game whether it's CMR or WRC depending on GT5's licensing deal AND continue the dirt series.

My biggest complaints on Dirt2 mostly are the lack of tweaking options for car setup, no adjustment for steering sensitivity which is a little too twitchy and when racing online I saw NO options for tweaking your setup and I always move the brakes one notch rear and the another option looser to compensate for the steering. Did not do well online. Guess I'll have to make myself adjust to the steering to play online. Ghost cars are a little too visible, too, as a few times a rolling crash obstructed my view of a turn and caused me to wreck as well.

You will not be able to adjust settings unless that option is enabled by the host I believe. Yea I played online and the camera was locked within the vehicle and we had to rally, man was that tough lol.

I'm really enjoying the vehicle setup right now, didn't know the tracks before, haven't touched it before but it really gives you an advantage to stay tight on tarmac or loose on gravel and dirt. I'm guessing you can adjust strong or loose differential to adjust your overall twitchy steering. I usually have it in the middle or 1 over towards strong.

New Tournament is up, speed run on Battlesea Bridge, the London Rally Cross track. Old tournament is over and lol I got very low with 364 ft of longest drift compared to 3,277 ft. Man, doing better with the current tourne though as I'm in the Top 10% with 50.33 for my time. Its really cool that you automatically get added into the current tournament, its seamless to your gaming.

Edit: I tried playing the game with the wheel a bit shaky at first I'm actually racing better than if I used a controller. Unlike the first game, Dirt 2 works really well with the wheel and after going down in difficulty I went back to the difficulty I had before and was still winning.

Cool site. Just saw that the Access All Areas Pack is available on PSN for $4.99, wonder if it's up on 360 and what it contains. Hopefully it's not just a way to unlock everything for $5. Codemasters is really lame for their pay us for cheat codes system they've had for awhile now.

I've kinda cooled off on this game as I've had no gaming time the last week and all the tracks in each country are too similar.

If anybody wants to compare stats or race add JDawgg77 on XBL!
I just added you to my friends jdawgg.
We'll have to race! The DLC is available on PSN right now, but you're just buying all the race tracks or all the cars and liveries. Boo. I was hoping for some new tracks.

Double Fame Point Weekend - This Weekend you can earn Double Fame Points in all Online Pro Tour events! So if you want to climb the fame point leaderboard or just increase your online rank head online this weekend 07/11 - 08/11 and get earning those extra points. we'll see you there...

Lol the date threw me off, its backwards since UK.
New stat site is up, how the hell do people have 1,353 rolls haha. Congrats, you suck the MOST!

I've got 19 thank you very much.
That's alot of rolls. I gotta admit I used the crap out of the rewind feature at first while getting used to the controls and then to get the perfect run with no slips only to realize that it negated that time getting posted.
Added you as well.
We'll have to race. I've been playing Uncharted 2, but I'm pretty done with it although I'll play some mp occasionally. Of course, Gears2 is having 3x exp until monday and I'm halfway through MW2, so I may not get back to Dirt2 until later this week. If I'm online anybody feel free to invite me to a race as I could use a break every now and then. I think I'm only 65% thru the SP on dirt. It just feels like every track for a discipline in a country has the same parts in it just mixed around a little bit and I haven't done a lot of mp yet.
From the Facebook page:

Hehe, yeah I decided to check out my stats again and Total Miles Driven - 119447120 Miles, holy crap! Also I love the Shibuya track, prob because of my previous GRID passion lol.

Edit: LOL, My bad, that's total Miles Globally, mine is 1576.33 Miles and I too love the Shibuya Track.

Boy this game died off. It just couldn't hold my attention after awhile. Now that I got my e74ed xbox back (well, a brand new console thanks to MS), I'm going to mix Dirt 2 back in with finishing Ghostbusters and Borderlands and fiishing the online parts of the soon to be defunct LOTR:C and Def Jam Icon. Hit me up if you want to race and I'll drive.

2 pieces of big news for the rally fans:
WRC coverage has started again on HD Theater, now with four half hour shows. One preview show and a show for each day of the race. Sweet, I've missed this format.

Also, a new WRC game is planned for release this fall on all consoles. I'm excited, but nervous as it's Black Bean doing the game.

I finally got it and it's ok I guess but I feel like I'm playing it just to play it since I got it not because I enjoy it.

I think Codemasters really needs to cut this shit out when it comes to being creative hiding the "menu". If I want to feel like I'm in a virtual world I'll watch Tron or god forbid go play The Sims.

I'm re buying GRiD too and I don't remember being fond of it's menus too.

Well I love Grid and Dirt, Dirt 2. I played the crap out of Dirt 2, I've gone back and started over playing GRID again. Yeah These games just don't keep your interest unless you're continually gaining xp, money and unlocking new events. Still need the online lvl 30 achievement and well been playing Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, and Borderlands instead.

I see you're in the top 600 in Career XP. How much extra did you do after beating the Career mode to build Xp or did not that many people finish the game? Amazingly, the top career XP holder has 20 mil or so. I'm at 1 mil XP with about 56% of career done. I've gotten back into playing this when I don't have time for a level of Ghostbusters.

And the car modeling, damage modeling and graphics are all top notch. They seem to like the physics, but I don't like the arcade feel at all. I'd much prefer the old CMR sim (well, more sim than now) feel. I'd also prefer a true rally game rather than the extreme sports vibe although the extreme sports stuff doesn't bother me that much.

Lol yeah I beat the game getting first place in all tournaments (I think/not certain on that) and just decided to continue racing at random spots across the map afterwards building up my XP level. I bet most people didn't finish the game and went online (something that I can do but I always get called a cheater due to my satellite lag). It's kinda hard to want to continue when your XP level doesn't move as much but thankfully you still get the random invites from the pros to score a lot of points if you beat them/their time.

Most racing games have long loading times and I would look to Forza on this one. Forza 2 had long loading times, Forza 3 seems to be a lot less but I do have the game installed to my HDD. DiRT2's loading times are acceptable to me and like GRID there is always something too look at to pass the time.
Also I believe they did a great job on the physics, graphics and overall details of this game.

Just went back and finished off career mode which sits me at Level 75. I was going to try to catch you Skybreaker, but at 10000 per three races at the highest level it would be a grind.

I noticed that a jack-o-lantern is in the camper right now. Odd they'll do little things like that, but no love for DLC tracks and cars. Also, a red and white monster racing suit keeps appearing and disappearing from a spot laid out on the couch. I never use monster skins so I don't know what that's from.

I'd like to get the mp achievements, but every online race I get into has some of the top racers in the world in it and I don't feel like I have much chance. If anyone wants to race send a FR/PM.

Haha yeah I played the single player a lot because before, where I was at, I couldn't really play multiplayer. Now I can but I didn't bring the game along with me but if I had it I'd def play online. I need to grab some online achievements as well. The biggest way to get a lot of xp is by doing the challenges the pros give you in career (beat their time, etc).
