What is the actual benefit of having post counts?
There's really only one point - and it's an important one to me and a lot of others who use this site.... I'd rather trade with someone with a high post count. I know you can artificially inflate your post count with meaningless crap posts but I'd find it hard to believe that someone would get up over 1000 posts over a period of 6 months to rip someone off in a $20 trade. If that's what happens then so be it I guess but I feel a lot safer trading with someone like that than with a total noob. IMO, the higher the post count the more likely that you are not going to get ripped off by that person.
This is somewhat how I feel about it although it can be misleading.. I mean crap (I am going to do it even though I have no problem with him)
Scorch just came here and hes way up in the 5k + range.
Ah, but you see every time you post Cheapy takes possession of a tiny sliver of your soul. Thus high posters are risking the ultimate peril if they displease the Cheap Lord.

My issue, since the Political topics are no longer posted on the front page, I vote something similar be done with the OTTs. I get tired of seeing half the new topics on the front page being one of the 100 variations of the OTT. Just a thought.
That does sound like a good idea.
Off Topic really doesn't draw new users into the site, and having the recent topics on the front page glutted with them doesn't help to draw people in.
Most people coming to the site come looking for deals, and might be turned off by some of the more outlandish off-topic topic names.
The people who would be participating in off topic posts likely know how to find thier way around enough to do so without having all the updates listed on the front page.
Thanks Jsweeney. It was my one good idea for the year. I'm spent now.

One other thing, I notice some people turning this into a "us against them" kind of thing with the people who post in the OTT saying everyone's against them. That's silly, we are all CAGs and come here for our own reasons, so stop with the "they hate us" or they are against us attitude.
The fact is seeing multiple OTT on the front page (one "official" OTT) and then 4 or 5 other topics like "What movie will you like" or "What TV show do you hate" or "Join the Chatroom" gets old for the majority of people on the site who are here for game deals.
So it’s starting to go political now? Are you on the far C or the far G side of CAG?

I think that's a good idea Cheapy. People should be seeing the deal-related stuff on the front page. I would think all the regulars who check the more specific things actually go to the Forum Index anyways (I know I do). This way, new people can see the deal-related threads without the front page being clogged by "Everything Else."

on a different path.... I thought I remember reading in the archives somesort of celebration when CAG reach 500,000 posts or 1,000,000 or something like that so that CAG could be on somesort of INTERNET BOARD RANKING PAGE...i.e. that proves the amount of traffic to site or something like that which would help Cheapy make some more money. If there is a big cut in the sheer number of posts would that hurt CAG's profitibility in the end?

Sorry if I have my numbers wrong..I am going on a distant memory here from looking through a ton of old threads when I joined (and lurked for a long time)

Do posts like +1, and OTT stuff actually help Cheapy earn money? if so I don't think anything should be changed.

A surprisingly simple and elegant solution there, CheapyD. This goes to show why your cheap ass gets kissed so regularly around here.

Here's my problem with the OTTs and the OTTers... certain individuals keep turning actual discussions into random OTTS. I open a thread to read through it, and after the first two pages I have to wade through pages of random, asinine, childish bullshit (like a single smiley face, someone quoting and adding nothing of their own, a single lol, etc.) just to find actual on-topic discussion. I have no problem with people having their OTT, do what you want.. but keep that dumbass crap in that one single thread... don't ever expand it into the other threads.

And as for most everyone of hiccupleftovers comments throughout this thread.. noone is on a witchhunt here, get off your pillar of self-pity and grow up.

I also think the OTTs should be deleted as they were at one point, some people do care about post counts, and its somewhat rediculous to have 5000 post members that have posted 3,800 OTT replies; 1,100 OTT replies in other threads they dont belong in and 100 actual usable responses.

Great minds think alike, Cornfedwb. And so do ours. Although I'm guilty of going OT in threads, I steer clear of the "excruciating minutiae" (and try to keep from being *too* silly) that seems to populate the OTTs. Not that I begrudge the OTTs, I just consider it like a smoking section. I don't smoke, so I don't go there.

A. I don't crave attention
B. Fine compramise, take them off the front page but stop saying that The Chronicles of Mr. Anderson's love life
I got 4000 posts!
I got 5000 posts!
I have a .67 GPA! are OTT thread and singling out the OTT.
C. There are plenty of other OT threads in that forum what about them.
D. I agree with taking the trading thread off the front page because inestead of one or two threads that go up to 500 you have five thousand little ones that take up that much space.

Other wise I more than agree with you. punq, Rybakc, Ledhed, Trakan they are all great people. I just feel that there is almost a witch hunt here. There's a lynch mob just for the OTs and that is not fair.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Breathe in, breathe out…

Now repeat after me, “it’s only a message board…”
I don’t think anyone is mob lynching you here. O:)

Your collective concerns about making this board better are indeed much appreciated.

Look, all the posts were not for nothing!
Careful. When Neko Hime posts about you, you tend to get famous.
Remember what happened with Mr. Anderson?
Not many get the attentions of the Princess of the Cheap Asses.
Wow, thanks JSweeney for bringing this to my attention. I must have just skipped it somehow. I think this is the first post I have ever read of Neko Hime's.

Just give me The Button and all the problems go away, much like when nobody wants to be the bad guy and kick some people out of a room on Halo2. I don't mind. These kids can go back to gamefaqs.com, I wonder if they have an account that can get into LUE?

I don't think it is a crime to post a quick and small message. Sometimes you can't help it. Although it is incredibly annoying to see smiley faces and lol as a reply to a post. Maybe 100 characters is too long for a minimum but what about 20 or 30?

I think something to prevent these dang silly replies would be nice. I was one of the people that was against the OTT's that were 1200 posts long and entirely useless. Before we switched to a new server I was deleting them to save space and resources on the server. Currently the server can handle the site well but what about a year from now? I like to keep the site slick and clean whenever possible. I see no benefit to the OTT threads. Off-Topic can be fun and fine but how about some general lite rules like:

1. No single word replies.
2. Posts must be relevant to the subject.
3. Subjects should not be insulting, self-promoting, or benign when possible.
4. Topics in OT with 500 replies will be retired and locked.

Just as an example...I know #4 is a bit obscure but it's just something I wrote fast.

I vote for what ever is needed to do away with this garbage. Banning? Sure. Tougher rules? Yeah, why not. Keep OTTs off the front page? Mos def.

The draw of this site is that 50 bucks is alot of money for video games. It's not how upset you are at your parents or how you might get a hand job on the way to school.

I mean, the only people that are concerned are people that don't have anything else to talk about besides what color their cereal box is and who's on the cover.

I have a question defender that has been bugging me for some time now, What would happen if instead of deleting the OTT that are 500+ posts we deleted many of the smaller thread that are only 1-5 pages long? If we deleted plenty of those wouldn't it be the equivalent of deleting one or two OTTs?

No, see the difference is that I contribute to the site, you however, do not. You are a strain on the resources.

Sorry but this is just getting sad.

In the 225 days you've been a member you've posted 5014 posts.

Thats 23 posts a day.

Now if you work 8 hours and sleep 8 hours, then you have 8 hours left.

The average post takes 5 mins, give or take and it still takes 10-15 to read past posts. (on average)

So on average its 20 minutes for a post. They're maybe 6 posts in 6 minutes...and 1 post in 45 minutes...but I'm going with averages.

So if you spend 20 mins on average and you post 23 times a day that equates to 7 hours and 45 minutes a day.

Leaving you with about 15 minutes to eat breakfast or jerk off to porn.

So in the past 6 1/2 months you've dedicated 1672 hours (rounded to the nearest hour.)

Thats about 10 weeks of posting.

So you're out 2 1/2 months of your life you'll never get back talking about cancer genes named after pokemon, or if Z.legend is truly a horse and shit.

This is why I dont understand the OTT forums. I'd rather work or play games. But thats just me
This was posted in my thread and I would just like to thank you for singling me out. Why don't you go do this to Ryback or CheapyD or someone else who is an administrator and has a lot of posts. Did you know that they actually have more than me?
No your not being singled out. The all of the people who post every two seconds should stop. The oTT have gotten out of hand and are a drain on the boards. I wished they would die 6 months ago. Some of the stuff you talk about is the most retared crap I have ever seen. The thing that gets me is you complain that this site needs to be child/work safe but all most every ott topic title is offensive. Meaty boners and stuff. Heres my advice GROW UP. GET A LIFE AND PLAY SOME OF THE GAMES THAT YOU GET FROM THE SITE. Thats my only complanint about cag. Its a great place and a great site but the OTT needs to go.

I am going to agree with you two as well. While I have nothing against the OTTers, I just don't feel the OTT serves much purpose on the front page. It is a small community of CAGers that use the OT, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for them to find it outside of the front page...

why can't we just have the OTT's and delete them after they hit a certain limit? wouldn't that do away with all the post counts generated from those threads?...i dont really know how the mechanics of the forum works, but i think we could keep the OTT people happy by letting them have their thread, and the non OTT people happy by deleting the threads when their at a certain limit and not including the posts from the OTT in the post count (if thats possible).... also just for the record, i've never posted in an OTT so i'm not advocating them, i also dont have anything them cause it really doesnt concern me.

anyway i think we should definetly do something about the "latest message board posts" on the front page so that it includes only (or more off) actual deals posted in the deals forum. i'm kinda tired of seeing all the other garbage that winds up there, and not having much time; i dont really browse thru the forums looking thru every title. and as someone pointed out earlier, having all the garbage threads under the latest message boards section probally doesnt look too good to new or first time visitors... it would probally persuade them more to join the site if they saw real deals they may be interested in rather than the misc. threads.

Are we still going to keep the OT forum off of the front page WITH the "compromise"? Because if you split it 5 and 5, it's just going to be 5 deals and then the OTT still being on the front page.

I have a question that has to do with this.

Why aren't the vs posts on the front page, yet the OTT ones are? I remember alot of hubbub being voiced about the VS forum, and everybody seemed to agree that it would be ok if they weren't on the front page.

Well it seems as if the same thing is happening again, with only a few loyalists wanting the OT posts to remain on the front page. Even a bunch of OTT alumns think it's a good idea to keep the OT posts off of the front page.

What I'm asking is: Why will the OT posts remain on the front and not the VS? (I want them both off, and I actively post/read the VS board. While I am a fan, i realize that these posts "pollute" the front page, and I am willing to spend the extra 2 clicks to get to the isolated forum. Why the double standard for the OT?)

I think the compromise would be awesome if the OT forum posts aren't on the front page. Dividing the latest posts between Deals and General Gaming Discussion is a very smart one. However, when you mishmash OT into that, it's kind of like "one of these things is not like the other".

First of all,I'm THE single greatest player in the Halo 2 clan. You can't get into the forum to see what I'm like, kinda like how you have to sit in the cafetria by yourself. Funny thing how real life and the web start to turn out the same.

Second, it's not about a big swinging dick contest, it's not about who does what because how big a scale it's measured on will always be contested. But one thing is for sure, I sure as hell havn't gotten people to post in my topics day in and day out about how I need to go to hell and die. But I'm sure one of the brain trust over there on "your side" will start doing just that, or have they already?

an addendum to Cheapys compromise that I think would be nice is pull 5 topics from the deals section, 5 from the trade section and 5 from the non gaming discussion. Why? Because someone posts a trade list and within 5 minutes its buried off the front page because of all the off topic stuff that gets bumped and someone who might be interested in it might miss it unless they are specifically looking to trade and it also causes the creator of the trade list/topic to bump their topic at an insane rate just to have it seen.

I think if anyone is really interested in trading they go to the trading forum and check there just like if they are really interested they go to the post deals forum for the deals. See this is one thing I don't get, if the OTs are not on the front page do you guys think you will see every great deal that will be posted? Most likely not. You will still have to search through the post deals forum.

I agree hiccup that the otts can be fun. Everyone one needs some humor and thats the place to go. Its nice to have a different topic on the boards when things are slow. The main problem is that it has become a gang of the same people posting. Its offensive. Its out of hand. Its creating problems for the site, new memebrs, old members, its causing fights. I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was controlled and not as much. Some people have to work. If I get started it on one topic by time I come home from work its 15 pages long. I think your getting upset cause of a difference of opion. You make this topic then get mad when people say they have a problem with it!? I like the OTTer you guys are a great group. I like the no OTT thery too are a great group. I just think that the OTT topics hurt the site more then they help. I come here for videogame deals. First and formost. If I was a new visiitor and saw some of the crap that has been going on on this site the last few months I would not join here. It seems to childish and hate to say it but very much like gamefags!

However, when you mishmash OT into that, it's kind of like "one of these things is not like the other".
it is because the VS. board took up the whole front page, and was not just one topic on the front page. and trading was not on the front page, but it got put back because traders complained.

Also, there is not all that much going on in gaming right now, aside from RE and a few previews of Konami games, so I have no objections to it being on the front page.

and mr.hockey makes an excellent point

EDIT: and he just made another excellent point on the next page

Did you know that they actually have more than me?
wow, this guy talks about how you waste time but just look at how he just wasted time!
O.K. You have a point there at times it can be offensive to certain groups I guess and it does get a little out of hand sometimes but I have never seen it causing fights. THe only fights I see it cause is by those who dislike the OTs and the OTTs in particular. ANd I already agreed with those wishing for it to be off the front page, fine let's end that conversation but I still don't see the problems that it causes for new members or old members. I mean I see members like Jimmiemac and DennisDFat and if you don't know who they are than they can send people away. But seriously, if there are no Vs. forums or OT forums on the frontpage will it really help any. Will you see every deal? NO most likely not and I don't think CHeapy wants just everyone to see the deals wihtout registering to be a user as well.

Like you said earlier, go back to lurking. If anything, be a man of your word, stop posting and go back to browsing, the world will live without you.
Yeah, I thought he said he was leaving. Instead, he's already made over 70 posts today.

If you're gonna leave, just leave. If not, stay. The discussion in this thread is not directed solely at you. There are obviously issues that need to be addressed, and this thread has allowed people to sound off.
I am beginning to feel like the anti-OTT OTTer. There definately needs to be some clean up though. The past few months have been a mess for randomness.
You're a penguin, silly! You're not an otter!!!

Actually I think it'd be cool if after 1000 posts the number dissappered ans was replaced by new poster titles, unless you actually WANT an custom title.
I like this idea. You can see who are the big regulars by their custom ranks, but there would be no competition between the regulars.
I don't like this idea. I am part of the EGM Crew of CAGs here but I have a post count approaching "only" 1000. That's all fine and dandy by me (if I wanted more posts, I could post more), but I don't think that a lot of these new guys who come along and after 5 weeks of posting have 1000+ posts (that's pretty sick - and I thought I was here a lot...), for whatever reason, should automatically hailed as trusted regulars. I trust a lot of people on here who have lower counts than I. I trust people who have 5,000+ posts. But there are also some in both categories whom I don't trust at all.

This may sound harsh, but:
Just because someone doesn't have a life, doesn't mean I respect them.
And just because someone has a life, doesn't mean I don't respect them.

The respect comes from actual posts that have content which leads you to "getting to know them" (I know, this is the internet, but rapport is important). Then you might do trades or know others whom you already trust who give positive reports on a particular person and further trust is built. I could care less about someone's post count. If I have a friend on here who has posted positive feedback about someone I do not know, that goes a long way in my book. Post counts are crap.

791st post!!!
j/k

No actually jimmi mac is an offensive ahole. Hes not funny and is a douche bag. And yes his actions do cause people to get upset and leave. But he is intittled to his voice and his oppion as well. What I ment for new memebrs was that epole are getting turned off from the stuff they see and may not post here and are leaving. What I ment for older mebers was ...well this whole conversation. I think the main problem is the titles and the competitioon/repettion between the OTT. Its not just to talk and laugh which is the whole point. It had turned into a competition to have the fastest or longest or most OTTs thats when I got feed up with it. When its not functionable for the group ( as in all cagers) then it should go.

Georgia huh, never would have guessed.

That's pretty funny coming from you, out of the two of you I vastly prefer JimmieMac. Despite what you believe at times he is quite funny, or so I've come to think.

maybe you should read the rest. As I was saying that he may be an unfunny douche bag. Hes intitled to be an unfunny douche bag. You may not like what he has to say but he still has the right to say it. Lay off the juice man. And just for the fun of it. What have I done to you?

People think of you as my younger, more retarded, unfunnier brother. You have all the hate I do but yet you lack the smarts to get it down in the typed form.
