These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.


I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.


I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.


Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

I was having this problem too the other day, so I just politely said that the coupon says that you can trade in your "games" not "game" for 50% extra towards Portal 2/MK, and they agreed that the system was ripping me off, so they called their manager and he told them to do an override so I got the proper amount. Before taking into account the cost of MK, I got approx $140 from my trades instead of $118 or whatever.

lol i think the employee at my gamestop forgot to scan my 50% coupon toward portal 2...

I traded in Killzone 3(27), RDR(15), and NBA 2k11(15), i got 76.95. By my calculations i should have gotten 91.20. ( () are the base values)

Now i am not at all blaming the employee. It is my fault for not making sure i got my total credit, but do you guys think i'd be able to go in there, show them this and get the $14.xx back? I know some of you guys went through the same thing, but what happened when you went in and tried to tell your side of the story? Again, not blaming the employee since i should've been more aware of what i was getting, but i just wanted to be sure that i would be able to get the $14.xx back. Thanks guys!
 
I'm assuming the Wii has dropped lower than $60 with the $50 bonus promo. Assuming it is still $50 or so, then that is $100 for a Wii. I think I might just dump my older one. It is a launch unit and already had to be repaired once by Nintendo. I just bought a new red one a few months back and I barely use either so it makes perfect sense to ditch one of them. My only hesitation with dumping the original one is all the Wii Shop stuff I have on it. But then I never play that stuff any more anyway... I used to have tons of CAGs registered, over 1000 Miis in my parade, and all sorts of system-locked game saves on it but when it went bad they wiped the memory and didn't restore any of that for me (the bastards). So I'm not nearly as concerned about that at least (we have just a few hours put back into SSBB for example after we had unlocked everything originally :cry:).

It has been a long time since I even dealt with the Wii Shop stuff. I'm assuming there is still no way to transfer the games to a new system, right? I think I have 1000 points on my old shop account. I guess I should open an account on the new one and gift something from one to the other to spend those points before wiping the system memory, right? I've never done the gifting, either, but I assume it isn't too hard (just add both consoles on each other's friend list and go from there).

You can try going back and explaining the situation. If that doesn't work, email their customer service and they will straighten it out for you.

Depends if you have the money to spend on the rest of what the credit won't cover.

It's always nice to have a new system (and one you can depend on more so than the old white ones) .. but it's purely up to you.

If you have had no prior problems with the system you currently have, then I'd probably just hang on to that one. Otherwise, if you have the money to blow and you want it bad enough, go ahead and get that shiny new 360 S.
 
I was strongly considering trading my launch Wii in and getting a black Wii with Wii Sports resort. And then I remembered that you can't transfer virtual console titles. So nevermind. Stupid Nintendo won't take my money.
 
I traded in MVC3, Sly Cooper Collection, and Halo: Reach yesterday using the 50% coupon from PUR. Like everyone has been stating in recent post that it doesn't scan, the manager knew what to do and had to override the system. So I got $81 in credit! Now is it safe to return Mortal Kombat at a different store location and get all the credit back to my card?

When I returned my copy of Mortal Kombat, the system would not allow the return to put the credit back on my card. The GS employee wasn't sure what to do, so another guy came over and overrode it to put it on a separate gift card. That's likely what will happen when you return it.

I want to say that they can't put return credit on your PUR card. Everytime I've returned something they had to put it on a separate card.
 
Ok i got a question for you guys. I was gipped out of 6 bucks (didnt get the extra 50% on my 2nd game) so i went to a different gamestop and he gave me a gift card. but i got a new receipt. I paid $7 and put $21 on my debit card. On my NEW receipt, it does not state that. It just shows the returned merchandise for MK then it shows New Merchandise for the Mk discounting the $6. If i return MK, will i get full cash for it since the receipt says nothing about the trade in ($34.50) on my previous reciept?It basically says Purchase total of the game, doesnt show the credit or the word CASH.

I used the PUR extra 50% TIV towards Portal2/MK coupon. The current GS promo of get extra $10 for trading 3 games made the math a little complicated. The really cool GS guy had to just discount the game X amount to give me the right trade-in credit. Be sure to pre-calculate or calculate your total TIV in-store so you don't lose some credit.

Got the Trade in PUR coupon for 50% extra to MK or Portal, but when I took the games employee told me that "it takes the "better deal" with that being the extra $10 from the computer which if the coupon took it'd be over $100 which i was going to get the SE MK and instead trying to give me $78 -.- ... so I called the corp. and they guy reimbursed my 1,000 points because he said they've had problems but said he'd leave the coupon active so hopefully they get it straightened out the coupons good until 6/30 so I'm hoping for some luck!

Actually you got 128.85 from all those trade-ins, considering 10% and $10 for every 3 Wii and PS3 games... do the math, I think something's up.

I used the 50% extra trade-in credit coupon and the coupon does appear to only apply towards one game which in my case was Killzone 3. The cashier caught that and offered to fix it but the store was busy and I didn't want to make other people wait longer because of 50 cents. I used my credit towards MK and as a thank you for not being a douche about the error the cashier gave me a DLC code for the Scorpion retro outfit.

No, I'm right. There is a Promo #10654 that applied some extra bonus on to each PS2 game that I traded in. I'm not sure what promotion it is.

The 3 for $10 extra on my PS3/ Wii games used the promo code #11106.
 
i was planning on waiting for a 50% bonus but i think i might just go trade in some games with the trade 3 get an extra $10 going on...

Damn, with a haul like that im seriously bout to cash in on my games that i don't play anymore, been wanting a 3ds since launch but been short on funds, nice way to unload games that have been collecting dust. pretty much better than the 50% trade imo.

Its alot better for cheaper games than a percentage. But the range of the values is so low that a 50% would be better. The TIV has to be atleast $2 and once it goes over like 6.67 or something is when the 50% is better. I wish they would just do a 50% or I may just tradein to Best Buy some games.

Perhaps I got lucky on my trade in. One store quoted me $80 for a Wii with PUR on Thursday. When I went to trade one in to another store on Friday, they gave me $90 ($40+$50).
