The good-old games of GOG are often hard to find and/or difficult to get working on modern machines. Many of them would warrant news of their release included in the 'Deals' forum; some would not. Therefore this thread proposes to be the compact depository of information regarding of classic games from GOG.com, as well as discussion concerning their deal-worthiness.

Special sales and promotions will continue to have their own threads.
Hopefully it's better than that most recent Alone in the Dark!
The new one could have been such a great game. It was phenomenally ambitious, but the developer in charge, a humble racing game studio, was not even remotely up to the task, and were in way over their heads. I remember some people saying that it collapsed under the weight of it's own ambition, but I don't think that's true. It's just that that particular developer couldn't carry the weight. If a truly triple-A team had been given the same basic ideas and directives, it could have been something special. A pity, really.

(Actually they've got the one from before that...maybe I should buy that first before these.)
The New Nightmare is pretty good. Really pretty background graphics. Definitely stands with the older games, if you ask me.
So how is this if I like Resident Evil?
You should like it I would imagine. But its only 6 bucks so not like your out a lot if you dont like it.

The game is NOT action oriented like later RE games are though, if you liked RE 1 and 2 then you should be good here.

But its not about monsters and such, this is more about terror as its heavily influenced by cthulhu mythos and lovecrafts writings. So if you like lovecraft then that alone is a great reason to play the games.

Personally I cant reccomend this purchase enough and again, its 6 dollars. Id reccomend it if it were double that still.

Yeah, I can barely even remember what its deal was now, but I think it was really ambitious...

Cool! I think I will start with that one. Cool that I guess the first four are up on GOG (for what, $12 total?)

Cool. Well I love Resident Evil 1-3 (and four, and own five but haven't played it yet) so hopefully I'll be okay.

I did actually play a DEMO for Alone in the Dark on the 3DO, and it seemed awesome, but of course that was before I ever played Resident Evil 1.

I've played through both "quests" of RE2, played through RE1 I don't know how many times, between the Director's Cut and the Gamecube remake...

Huge fan of survival horror stuff in general, or stuff with that creepy vibe and style of gameplay. LOVED Deadly Premonition!
I was interested but I don't think I can handle anything lower than RE1 graphics for survival horror.
Maybe "The New Nightmare" would work for you? I guess that's where I'm going to start, and if I love it maybe go back.

I remember when Alone in the Dark's graphics were totally cutting edge! Then Resident Evil was that much better...geez, I still love the game, and the graphics get it done, but it went from the most astonishing thing I'd ever seen, to...not, some time in the last 15 years!
What are you talking about?
To me actions speak louder than words. When Lucasarts re-released their older games they went to Steam first. Since Steam is the largest digital download store, that made sense. Those older games are a perfect fit for GOG. Yet while other services received those games, GOG did not. Also, the games that run on the SCUMM engine were modified so that they would not run on SCUMMVM without updating that emulator. They didn't want those games to be played without Steam the way dosbox games on Steam can be played.
To me actions speak louder than words. When Lucasarts re-released their older games they went to Steam first. Since Steam is the largest digital download store, that made sense.
No. They launched on Direct2Drive, completely DRM free, the same day as Steam (where they only use the minimum mandatory Steam DRM).

Yet while other services received those games, GOG did not.
So, solely because their games aren't on GOG, even though they sell the games completely DRM-free elsewhere (and only the absolute minimum DRM where applicable), they somehow have some particularly outstanding "pathetic love" of DRM? Not being on GOG and not "loving" DRM are not mutually exclusive. You need to explain what actions they've demonstrated that show that they have a particular and noteworthy affinity for DRM.

Also, the games that run on the SCUMM engine were modified so that they would not run on SCUMMVM without updating that emulator.
So because they didn't ensure that their file formats are compatible with third-party (and probably copyright-infringing) software, they again have a "pathetic love" of DRM? That isn't what DRM is about, dude.

I already beat The New Nightmare :D. I thought it was okay but its why I was interested in the deal. Then I saw the graphics and almost laughed. Old 3D games hard to look at. I am totally fine with most PS1 games though.
No. They launched on Direct2Drive, completely DRM free
Ah, see I did not know that. I forget that Direct2Drive apparently has some DRM-less games? You download an installer I guess, like GOG?

Had I know that I probably would have actually bought some of those.

Well that makes it weirder that they're not on GOG!

Ah, well more incentive for me to get The New Nightmare I guess!

Hey, technically I think some of the Alone in the Dark games were on the PS1...maybe? Soooo you could tell yourself that? :D

Star Control 1 + 2
$5.99

The first two installments of the Star Control series are mixtures of space combat, dialogue-based diplomacy, and RPG-style ship upgrading. You also engage in the sometimes tedious scanning of planets for vital resources (influential, eh?). Developer Toys for Bob brought a great combination of epic space opera, strategy, and humor to these tales of conflict between the Alliance of Free Stars and Ur-Quan Hierarchy.

I had Star Control 1 on the Genesis, and it was one of the best multiplayer games EVER.

Star Control 2 I'm a bit worried about...I had it on the 3DO, and it's AWESOME, except it seems like the 3DO is a massive upgrade to the PC version? It was voiced, had (then) high resolution graphics, etc.

I'm a bit worried if I'll be able to handle this version?

DAMN...Duke Nukem...fuckING DUKE NUKEM loves Star Control! That is amazing

FWIW, There is a free "remake" of Star Control 2 out there. Google it if you are interested. The remake is just as good if not better than the commercial version.

It's based on the source code donated by Toys for Bob, and its the source code of the 3DO version. (And also not finished, and I assume missing art assets the original has)

I'm really not clear if I'd like the PC version or not. The 3DO version and the Genesis version of 2/1 were AMAZING but I've never touched the PC originals, so I'm worried, because they look super dated.
It's based on the source code donated by Toys for Bob, and its the source code of the 3DO version. (And also not finished, and I assume missing art assets the original has)
I tried the free version maybe 3 years ago, and single-player seemed pretty complete and stable back then. I'm sure it's only gotten better.

I don't think it's missing any in-game art assets, but I'm not sure. The majority of them were certainly there (the original 3DO art was included in the source code donation). It is missing the video cutscenes that the 3DO version apparently had (a different company has their copyright), but the PC (and GOG?) version didn't have them either, it has a slideshow instead. The free version has that slideshow included.

The FAQ says that the only thing really missing for complete clone parity with the original is nameable save games, but they're primarily concentrating on addition of all-new features (online melee, mods) right now, hence the 'Beta' label. And it seems to be referring to 0.4, which was released in 2008, so that might even be done by now.

Anyway, it's a free download to try it out, and then if you're happy with it you will at least know it's there if the straight PC versions disappoint.

The "free" version is called Ur-Quan Masters and is the complete version of the 3DO release provided you download the voice and sound packs all of which are freely and legally available with a google search. It is fantastic and arguably superior to the PC release (which GoG is providing), though I will be buying the originals just to support it.

Star Control II is in my personal top 5 and is a can't miss experience. I wish TfB would bury the atrocity of Star Control 3 with a real reboot of the series. It is long overdue.

Reasons like this are why I love GOG, gives me a chance to enjoy games I missed when I was younger. Picked up Star Control games and I might check out the free one anyway.

This classic point-and-click adventure doesn't come from one of the 'usual suspects', but was instead developed by Microprose after their forays into the genre with Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender and Return of the Phantom. Don't let their relative inexperience dissuade you, however, as they managed to produce an adventure with an excellent plot, rewarding gameplay, and challenging puzzles...without an "End Turn" button in sight.

I'm buying it...even though I already have a retail copy

I also went ahead and preordered The Witcher 2. I was torn on getting it retail or through GOG, since I want to support that yeah, I'll gladly buy full price games like that (well, actually it's only $45, but...) if there's no activation, but also I really want a retail pressed disc since they should last indefinitely.

But...at least this way I don't have to worry about whether the copy will have activation

Awesome I am totally in for The Witcher. I passed up on previous deals and I *LOVE* that GOG is DRM-free. Totally sold on this.

I picked up The Witcher even though I already have it on Steam. Also pre-ordered TW2 and picked Divine Divinity as my bonus game. I think all of this will take a while to download on my crappy DSL.

Yeah, I'm not even going to TRY to download The Witcher until this weekend, where I can just leave my 'puter on until it's done.

Although actually they say they have a new downloader...maybe you don't have to do it all at once now? If so, it sure came just in time...

How good is The Witcher really? I have the Enhanced version and have played a good 30 minutes or so, and it really isn't my cup of tea at all.

Is it worth it to keep pushing forward in it?

Supposed to be really good, though it's in my backlog. Got nothing but great reviews though. I assume this is the uncensored one, which rocks :whistle2:D

@ Rayne I would definitely push forward. I purchased it a couple months ago and I felt the same way at first, wasnt sure where it all was really going. But believe me, The Witcher becomes extremely ejoyable once you begin meeting more characters, get a sign or two and have to start to make decisions that will alter things greatly in the later chapters. Definitely one of the better stories/atmospheres in a game in a long time.

Oh wow, cool! The second one (which is what "Rayman 3D" on the 3DS is) is the best of the three IMO. The first and third are way too hard. Second was the most pleasant gameplay.

Oh wow, all three of those are pretty significant. I might have to pick up Privateer and Dungeon Keeper, just 'cause.

EDIT: I wonder if Privateer supports game pads or anything now? That would be cool.

Wish they had Privateer 2, because I missed that (and it had Christopher Walken in it, I think!)

But thankfully they are working hard on getting this on the service. Probably the same way it took them a while to get the D&D games on GoG.

PRIVATEER! HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!

I actually have an ancient DOS pc specifically for playing the game, as I've never been able to get it running properly through dosbox on a modern system.

I loved playing Ultima Underworld, but I've never actually finished it.

It's a bit late now, but I also highly recommend The Witcher. The combat system isn't as complicated as it might sound, and it doesn't feel grindy at all. There's a ton of stuff to do (you gain levels super fast) without making it boring.
Sadly, as much as I want to finish it, I think either the questline broke on me or there's a certain dialog sequence that refuses to trigger to signal the end of chapter 4. :whistle2:(
