These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable

 Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

 Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

 My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

does CAG have a history of the TIV of a game for like 6 months? been poking around to see if the option is available.. also does anyone know what was the highest value for MW2?

Highest base trade for virtually any game has been $35, but Modern Warfare 2 hasn't been that high since probably December.

unsure about twitter posts but yeah any qualifying systems on the $30 hardware bonus can be used towards dsixl preorder.

How accurate is that twitter thing, if gamestop doesn't even match their online prices?

I would of thought FF13 would trade in for $35, and for fire emblem you should of traded in towards the trade in 2 games get God of War 3 for $20.
 
Ok so... I forgot I had some crappy used games I bought from Gamecrazy for $2-5 each.


Decided to use this deal only because it actually benefited me. :)

Most of these were actually higher than they were before...weird.

Naruto Clash of the Rev.: 2.50

wwe here comes the pain: $1.75

Don't have edge and they hit me with a $1 refurb since naruto had minor scratches. All games were disk only outside of here comes the pain.

Ended up with $27.12.
 
Alright something peculiar just came up guys. I dont know if its just that they're being clueless or something, but here goes. I asked the employee how much i'd get for a 360, just for fun, since im considering selling mine i got for 150 to see all my options. I asked them and at first the guy said 60, and i was like WHAT!?!?! in my mind, but then the other employee said oh its 80 or 90 depending on your console. Now HERE is the interesting thing, the guy then said, plus you get an extra 30 thanks to our promo so its actually 110 or 120. He said NOTHING about it being towards another system. I just wanted to throw that out there. Just something to think about, i dont know if its true considering sometimes there are clueless GS employees.

Unfortunately I think it's more the case of a clueless employee with half the facts. If computers didn't handle promotions automatically, GS would be hopeless. I can't tell you how many times workers have hit total during a trade and said "Wow, there must be a promotion because now your getting $xx more."
 
It is true that most GS employees are not aware of the promotions. I think jp and I have both mentioned a number of times the odd looks we got when we started bringing coupons to our respective local GS stores. The employees looked at them like they were in a different language. I mean, if you worked part-time at a retail store, would you care about that stuff? Fortunately, as salty tbone points out, the computer handles just about everything, so it really doesn't matter.

I just wanted to apologize for asking about the GS glitch. I really do not care that much about it and I was just going to wait for a B2G1. I had someone on here send me a pm saying they will tell me if I send them 1600 MS points. LOL its not that serious.

Oh and thanks to JP for all the hard work! I made like $100 from mostly older titles because of this thread.

Just got a txt message on my cell from Gamestop telling me about this promotion. I guess they're really trying to gain inventory.

just try to trade it in, if they check if it works you will get less than if it were to work. Gaemstop sometimes will take broken stuff if they can get it fixed, but they will take out a refurb fee. I traded in a dead xbox once during their $50 bonus years ago, and the bonus erased the refurb fee, so I got almost $50 for a broken xbox which would have gone in the recycle bin otherwise.

If it doesn't look busted on the outside, they probably will give you the full TIV. They don't really check for the functionality of accessories, as long as they look like they work.
