The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Someone needs to rerelease a trilogy of the original Fatal Frame games (and not LRG because they will just take the PS2 versions, do no upgrades, slap on a PS4 logo and release them separately for $40 + $6 shipping for each individual game).

There will only be a trilogy if the digital release is a trilogy too. Similar to Metal Slug Anthology or KOF Orochi Saga.

You are confusing what a publisher does with what a developer does. LRG is a publisher. They don't develop games but rather negotiate with developers for a physical production run of games already made for the system in question by the developers. YES, they are tied closely with the developer Mighty Rabbit Studios, but that's a very tiny indie developer that does very little these days.

If the games were re-released and it was just the PS2 versions on PS4 discs (not that simple but close enough).. that would be due to the developer going the cheap route... which wouldn't be LRG's fault as they only took what was provided and moved it through the appropriate channels to get a physical version produced.

All of the money grab re-releases LRG has done has been 100% with the developers on board for that path. It makes them ALL the most money and that's really all they care about.

Sorry, do people here buy from Pixelheart? Interested in picking up a PS4 game from them, but have never ordered from there.

I haven't ordered anything from them yet, but am planning too. Here is a coupon code you can use to get 15% off: 'NEWPIXEL' . Hopefully it still works. If it doesn't work, try Shop4MegaStore. They are selling a bunch of Pixelheart games with free U.S. S&H.

Thanks. Would be good to hear from someone who has bought from Pixelheart. Anyone?

I have a couple of deals with them. I ordered a Dreamcast game from them early last year. They sent me the wrong game. I emailed them about it and didn't get a reply for two months. They asked for pics and then wanted me to send the game back to France. I wrote them back again asking if they would cover return shipping since shipping internationally is expensive. Never got a response and in the meantime the game I wanted had sold out, so I gave up on it. Ended up finding the correct game elsewhere and will be reselling the incorrect game I got when I get around to it.

My second transaction with them was the Kickstarter for Arcade Racing Legends. One of the discs had a misprint on it so they sent backers a free game which we could choose from a list. That was a nice touch and made up for the previous experience.

Some of their games are available at VGNYsoft too. It would be easier to buy there if they have what you want.

Thanks! This is helpful. VGNYsoft doesn't have what I'm looking for, but still good to know!

Strictly Limited Games just contacted by email to state the release of Bite the Bullet for Switch is defective and you can contact them for a replacement cartridge. It seems they put the wrong build of the game on the switch cart. This cart can be updated with the latest patch that will fix the issue but they are offering people new cartridges with the proper build that would not require a patch if you contact them with your name, email and order #.

I haven't had the time to play the game yet so I'm glad to see someone found out about the issue and they are trying to fix it.  I sent them my information and they already replied to let me know I can receive the new cart when it is available.

Looks interesting, shame no standard PS4 copies outside of LE

Sent from my SM-N970U1 using Tapatalk
That is a bummer. Wonder what PlayAsia will price this at. The LE doesn't really include all that much more than a standard edition - manual, soundtrack ... in a box.

PS4 Limited Edition: $34.99

Switch Limited Edition: $39.99
Switch Standard Edition: $29.99
Not bad (though I admit for the content here, it's just not worth the price). I'm also not sure I can bring myself to pay for shipping. Need to think a bit more about this one. There are other hack and slash games I'm far more excited about than this one.

B-Side Games in Japan is shutting down their store and having a final sale on the Switch games they published. Games are approximately $15 each, with the exception of a special version of Kamiko, which comes with an acrylic. Shipping is a flat rate at about $30, so it's best if you order more than one game. Games available are:

Golf Story

Cat Quest

Kamiko

Brave Dungeon Chronicles Pack

Kyogeki Quartet Fighters (AKA Quad Fighter K)

These are all nice special editions.

Man, that was annoying to buy. While working tried several times on my phone to no avail. Got off work and went on my laptop, ordered it no problem then.
Has anyone figured out who is actually behind that company? I see they post some weird stuff on twitter but since I don't have an account I can't see the comments.

No, but the primary theory I have seen seems to be that it's not the same company that did Poop Slinger (I still think that was just LRG) and that this new company is likely Hard Copy Games.

Indigo 7 looks like it could be interesting, Brother United just seems like a very poor man's contra.

If anyone has any first hand accounts please share

Wow. I tried loading both EAS Vita product pages the minute they were available. Brotherhood United was no problem, but Indigo 7 hung and didn’t load for two or three minutes. After that, I was able to get it in my cart, but it sold out before I could complete checkout.
