This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

Haven't played SKOB2 recently so I wouldn't know. I've tried the free-add-on fighters once or twice but they're even bigger dicks than some of the later fighters.

Note that you can check the Glu website for hints for every fight. Like REAL useful stuff.

Some awesome deals this week with EA, Gameloft and a few other surprises as well. Thanks to all the CAG's that contribute to this thread and the recommendations on apps.

And RAMSTORIA I can't recommend the Otterbox case enough. I've dropped the 3GS so many times (especially on concrete/pavement) and the case protects like a champ. I have to agree with Malik in that ZAGG makes great stuff as well.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is finally out in the US for $1.99. Dont know if it's a price mistake or not but I'm not gonna wait til find out considering its a game by Konami and the other countries who already had the app had it priced around $10.

Mr. Space!! has dropped to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mr-space/id342621037?mt=8).
"Your dexterity is the key to survival!
Locate the exit, and run for it!
Simple controls meet nail-biting tension in one dynamic action game!

- Easy-to-use controls and intuitive gameplay
- Daily rankings and global leaderboards
- Multifunctional keypad mode"

Car Mania is also currently FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/car-mania/id322429835?mt=8).
"Oh !*#&! It’s rush hour and tempers are flaring as the city heads towards gridlock.

Take control of the traffic with a touch in Car Mania, a game that’s jammed full of finger-twisting casual action.

Steer the drivers to their destinations while avoiding road rage - or set up a spate of ‘accidents’ that’ll be sure to clear the streets!"
Grokion is $1. Has anyone tried it? It looks cool but no one here has ever mentioned it.

Also Camera+ is on sale for $1.
I own it, but it's in my backlog folder. I'll take a quick look and see if it plays as good as it looked when I saw the release posting on TA.

Edit:
So I probably should have paid more attention to the text, because I really had no idea what was going on or what I should have been doing. I can definitely see why some of the less favorable reviews rag on the controls as I was thinking the entire time that this would play so much better with dual stick controls, but I can also see how that would cause problems on the iDevice (two virtual analogs would just cause issues for jumping and with screen real estate) so it's probably as good as it can be on the platform.
I normally don't play with sound, but I turned it on just to be thorough and for the most part nothing stood out at me as glaringly bad or overly impressive--apt sound effects and mostly appropriate but ambient background music.

I'll probably start over at some point in the future (possibly on the new casual difficulty setting to offset some of the control frustration). I hate to say it's good for $1. I'd say if the above trailer did something for you and you'd like to have a Metroid inspired game on your device you wont go wrong. Personally, I probably could have lived without owning it, but I don't regret the purchase.

My current addictions are TapFish and iAssociate 1 & 2. All have free limited versions.

TapFish is great. Many items/fish in the game cost FishBucks which can be purchased, but the author gives you plenty of opportunites to get free fish books by downloading (and then deleting) free apps. I've been playing for a month and have never purchased FishBucks. It's realy fun. I log in a few times a day, feed my fish, decorate my tank, breed new fish. If you're patient there is a lot of enjoyment to be had here. I'll be playing for a long time.

iAssociate is a unique word game. It has a free trial version. Each level is a puzzle in which you have to figure out related words and phrases. It's pretty challenging. iAssociate 2 is more of the same except you only get a handful of free levels and additional levels are pay. If you like word games, check these out.

My daughter's birthday is coming up and I'd like to get her an iPod Touch. I have a DS + games to trade/sell. Would it be better to just sell them on eBay or can anyone recommend a store that sells the Touch where I might be able to get reasonable trade value for the DS/games? Also is there a big difference between a 2nd & 3rd generation Touch? PM please

Great App a Day has Fridger for its featured freebie today (http://www.greatappaday.com/details/fridger/).

Free App Calendar has a game called Save Kitty (http://www.freeappcalendar.com/details.php?id=232). It's by the same people who did Tiki Totems (which is the current OpenFeint freebie).

A couple of other price drops (both currently FREE):
The fantastic Arkanoid-on-steroids Jet Ball is a must-have for fans of the genre (http://itunes.apple.com/app/jet-ball/id347411354?mt=8).

Save your food from the swarms of flies in Yummy! (http://itunes.apple.com/app/yummy/id349925847?mt=8).

Two more freebies you may or may not be interested in. The descriptions alone are enough for me:

A Hit 'n Run variation (sort of an eat 'n run) called Glutton Truck (http://itunes.apple.com/app/glutton-truck/id370535551?mt=8).
"You can eat enemy cars as being to drive a car.
Eat a lot, further increasing the size of your car,
you will be able to eat car more big.

Also, if you crash the enemy and you will get the double score.
You do not touch enemy if them bigger than you.
See Energy Bar on left top of screen. you can know your size.

Finally, you have triggered your turbo when your energy bar full.
Please see "How to Play" menu in Game. That is a more detail description. "

The puzzle arranging Vampire's Library (http://appshopper.com/games/vampires-library) is described thusly:
"You are Vampire`s Assistant. Your Master most like to read Book. But he never cleanup. His Library is not clean always.

CleanUp all Books. It`s your work. If you move too slow, Your Master does drinking your blood."

You might want to consider doing the trade-in through gazelle.com which would result in your receiving Amazon credit. There is also bestbuytradein.com as well. I don't know if their values are that great for DS systems, but you can look it up on their sites.

If you have a Hastings in your area, I think they probably take DS trade-ins and sell iPods. Chances are, you don't have one nearby though. As with most things, you'll probably get the most value back by selling it on craigslist, eBay, or on here to a fellow CAG.

There are differences between the 2nd- and 3rd-gen Touches and if the device will be used for playing lots of games, I'd recommend the 3rd-gen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch#Models

Basically, its just more powerful and more capable. Also, they'll both run iOS4, but a 2nd gen wouldn't get all the new features, just like the iPhone 3G doesn't.

I picked up Battle Bears -1 for a dollar. It's got some pretty entertaining cut scenes. The main idea is you are being attacked by these happy creatures that want to hug you. The controls are pretty bad in my opinion, but you get used to them. It's also a bit repetitive as you make your way from room to room to reach the boss. But each room does become increasingly challenging and provides new bad guys. Overall, well worth a dollar, I'd say, though.

You get multitasking, homescreen wallpaper and battery percentage enabled if you jailbreak on the 3G and 2nd gen touch's

I know, but since its for a little kid, I don't know that he'd want to have it jailbroken, but good point.
Don't miss Tiki Totems FREE, seriously, you'll kick yourself!
Thanks for this, I know other people posted the deal, but this made me double check and turns out the one I had was just the version that's always free. I thought I had paid for it (happy surprise for once).

HellJump is now free check it out guys!

I just got an iPhone 4 yesterday so every game has pretty much been running amazing. Multitasking is simply astounding and now i can even see my battery percentage left. Not that its a suprise but my iPhone has greater battery life then my older 2g iPhone

Thanks to this thread I have picked up a lot of games but the only game I keep coming back to play is Flight Control. Easily the best $1 I ever spent.

Another how-high-can-you-go game, Perseus Jump is currently FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/perseus-jump/id377678704?mt=8).

Jumping seems to be the flavor for today because Free App Calendar is featuring Pirate Jump for its free game (http://itunes.apple.com/app/pirate-jump/id364392485?mt=8).

Finally, although it's a non-jumping title, Word Cafe is also FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/word-cafe/id346440185?mt=8). I suppose you could hop around while you play it if you wanted to be consistent . . .

Free App a Day is showcasing AC-130 Spectre: iSniper from Above! for its Sunday giveaway (http://www.freeappaday.com/napp.php?id=218).
"RAIN DEATH from the SKY in this VISUALLY STUNNING take on MODERN WARFARE...
CLIMB ABOARD an AC-130 SPECTRE gunship and strap on your NIGHT VISION goggles. FULL 3D. EXPLOSIONS GALORE. pick your WEAPON OF CHOICE and OPEN FIRE..."

The OpenFeint free game today is Tucker Ray in: Rednecks vs. Zombies (http://itunes.apple.com/app/tucker-ray-in-rednecks-vs/id367765283?mt=8#).

"Help Tucker Ray battle through hordes of Zombie monsters to find his sweetheart Bobby Sue! Dual-stick action!

After mysterious meteors trashed his trailer park, Tucker Ray returns to find giant zombies have taken over! "Tucker Ray in: Rednecks Vs Zombies" features 5 different zombies to blast, 3 different weapons (including the mysterious Monster Squirrel Cannon), 3 different levels including Tucker's trailerpark, The Farmlands, and one unbelievable Boss Battle with Undead Betty you have to see to believe!"

Picked up AC-130 and Tiki Totems Premium for free. Thanks all! Haven't tried either yet...

Also noticed today that in iOS 4 it no longer does that annoying thing when you paste, where it would remove any space you put in and paste it right up against the previous word. Thank goodness they changed that!

Vent alert: Good LORD I hate those fucking jumping games! There's about 600 of them (because, in reality, we need that sort of variety with 'jumping' - I know I personally jump 8 different ways in real life, depending on the situation!)

Allow me to list them and waste your time further:

Scared jump
Surprised jump
Basketball jump
Avoiding a snake jump
Avoiding an oncoming car (a-la Matrix-style)
Distance jump
Backwards jump (not to be confused with surprised jump)
Jumping jack jump

Hey...I think I might have an idea for a jumping game, now! And it'll be TOTALLY different from all the other jumping games - seriously!!!

I certainly understand that sentiment, to an extent. I'd say the jumping games, or similar, that I find to be actually very good are Doodle Jump, Ninjatown Trees of Doom, Mega Jump, Bird Strike, Air Bear, and Parachute Ninja. They're all somewhat different takes on the genre.

I wouldn't put Parachute Ninja in among the jumping games. Well, the endless mode is that, but the main game is not. And actually I think the endless mode is pretty fun too and it feels very different from those other games.

Also, the precursor to them all is now all but forgotten Papi Jump. Oh, Papi, what happened to you?

The Battleship-like Warships has dropped from $1.99 to FREE (http://appshopper.com/games/warships).
"Warships offers you a new twist to the classic battleships game. Play against your iPhone, choosing between three levels of AI. Moreover, should you win, Warships will evaluate your performance and give you a score, which can be sent to our official website!"

Distant Assassin Reload: Sniper Trainer, a sort of cross between paid assassin gaming and Where's Waldo, has dropped back down to FREE (http://appshopper.com/games/distant-assassin-reload-sniper-trainer).

Superblox: Powers Unleashed continues the colon:titled naming trend of FREE offerings today (http://appshopper.com/games/superblox).
"This addicting arcade game mixes light puzzles and frantic action to deliver amazing playability.
WARNING: Superblox is NOT your Grandma's puzzle game! In Superblox, you will use super powers, fight deadly enemies, race against the clock and create cool blox!"

It's only sort of on sale, but I finally picked up Carcassonne, never having played it before, and it proves to be a really fine game, and the iOS version is superb. It's $4.99, but will go up to $9.99 when the universal version is released "later this year". I wonder if "universal" will included "enhanced for iPhone 4"?

If anyone wants to play a game of Carcassonne, I'm "Crunc" on there.

They 1.1 update last week already enhanced it for iOS4:

Carcassonne v1.1 now features:

• Supports iOS 4
• High-resolution artwork for iPhone 4’s Retina display
• Multi-device support enhancements
• Improvements to Internet play
• Setting to disable chat in Quick Play
• Setting to disable vibration on turn
• German localization fixes

I've heard great things about saving private sheep. People that like physics based puzzle games ala tumbledrop should give it a go.
