This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

I thought I read somewhere that your level gets reset but all your stats remain. Maybe they didn't completely fix that bug...
That's what I posted on like the last page. That's what happened the first time but after playing more, the stats reset too.
ROCKET LAWN CHAIR!!!! Awesome :D
Took me a few deaths to figure out how to use it -____-

Did anyone else lost all their kill/jump stats (but not the achievements) after the update?
Agreed, and I think I paid $0.99 for it. I have a folder of all my shmups, and this is one of the very few I deleted.

Good God. You and everyone else in this thread is right. I can appreciate a shump that's average or maybe has some design flaws, but this crap isn't worth playing through.

I *think* this may be another match-3 game but I really can't tell from the description of U Fishing (http://itunes.apple.com/app/u-fishing/id385468300?mt=8#). Goodly Engrish and 24-hour FREE sale compels me to find out more. . .

"Welcome to UFishing World, tell me what you want.
In app store, you could easily find such a thing with gorgeous pictures, gripping sounds, or exciting story with ups and downs.

However, those things are not what Sweet & Sheep concern.
Simpleness and happiness are our focus. YEP ~

U FISHING is a very easy game. Once tap the screen, and get what you want."

The action blaster Realms is the latest FAAD additional freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/app/realms/id300599886?mt=8).
"Realms, the intense action shooter blasts its way onto your screen providing numerous levels of gameplay for the beginner and advanced iPhone and iPod Touch gamer.

Start with any of six different races and prepare your ship to embark on a journey through the six realms, encountering minefields, power generators, guardians and protectors. Collect Tari to upgrade your ship and buy inventory to make your journey less perilous. Once your vessel is armed, prepare to test your skills in destruction, strategy, defense, and maneuverability as you engage in space warfare."

You can also transform your iDevice into the world's most expensive Etch-a-Sketch with this FAAD featured title (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/etch-a-sketch/id284829991?mt=8).
"Re-live the classic drawing fun of Etch A Sketch - the World's Favorite Drawing Toy - on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Dazzle your friends with doodle masterpieces. With the multi-touch feature, use both knobs at once just like the real Etch A Sketch. Want to start over? Shake the iPhone to undo your doodle! Create your own Etch A Sketch cartoons: import a photo from the Photo Album, draw on it, and add a caption."

"If it isn't you, destroy it" pretty much sums up Free App Calendar's latest feature, Assault Commando (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id382001571?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4).

"A 3D shooter game, set in the South American jungle.

You have to help Jack Gunfire, a cynic war hero to stop Albrecht Braun from taking over the world.

- Stunning 3D graphics
- Mountable vehicles
- Weapons, weapons, weapons
- Hundreds of enemies to shoot
- High quality soundtrack
- 3 difficulty levels
- Free updates
- Open Feint online Leader Boards"

Labyrinth! is another puzzle game made by the same team that made Parking Lot. It's not the tilt-your-phone game like the other games with the same title, but it is a fun puzzle game. Give a try and I think you'll like it. It's part of their 7 game all-in-1 Logic Gamebox collection. I hope they release more.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/labyrinth/id396415152?mt=8

Parking Lot is still free. A graphically nicer version of unblock me.

Liquid Measure is another fun puzzle game from the package

I'm a little conflicted with Shoot the Magic. The graphics are pretty bad and there's basically a split second lag in movement which, normally, would kill a shmup... hoever in StM's case, the auto bomb feature makes up for about 1/5 of the frustration. It's a feature I would like to see on other iPhone shmups as the touch screen isn't the best for this genre. So while I would normally rate it a 1 star, that sort of gives it a bit of a bump for me.

A little note for anyone here that has Baseball Superstars 2010: DO NOT UPDATE! The update finally adds multi-tasking, but the current update slows the game to nearly unplayable levels.
In for Pixelcraft. Thanks Jjz!
I see that gratitude, and raise you a "Sweet!" for Nanoids. Looks shockingly similar to a few other shmups I've snagged, but I'll check it out.

What shmups do people keep on their phones? I have:
DoDonPachi
Icarus-X
SkyForce Reloaded
Space Deadbeef
Buster Red
rRootage
1942: First Strike
iFighter
Ultrablast

I loved the Espgaluda II, but only got the demo -- which I played through several times before DoDonPachi released at a discount.

I updated. I'm on a Touch 4G and haven't noticed any slowdowns. What's your spec?

Don't think it's been mentioned in the past few pages, but Trainyard Express is free and a fantastic little polished puzzle game that blends track-switching with color theory (merging and colliding colored trains). The "full" Trainyard is only 99 cents, so Trainyard Express is kind of a Lite version, but both versions have unique puzzles; supposedly 60 in Express and 150+ in the full version, along with a few new gameplay elements.

I highly recommend Siberian.

Other's I've snagged but have yet to play are:
1945 Plus
AceFighter
StarCannon
StellarBlast
Warblade
HotField
Roswell
Nanoids
Goku Flight
Nunix
Blastian
MagicKui

I did not like Goku Flight at all. Blastian got deleted quickly, too.

Sky Thunder failed to make my cut, but it's decent.

I'll add Siberian Strike to my Appshopper want list. $5 isn't happening right now, but looks good.

One that I noticed was missing from your list is Tyrian. It's basically a port of a really old shooter but I still like it.

So I'm new to iPhone gaming -- if I wanted, say, three shmups, which would be the best out of that bunch?
So I'm new to iPhone gaming -- if I wanted, say, three shmups, which would be the best out of that bunch?
You want Dodonpachi, Espgaluda 2, and either Space Invaders Infinity Gene or rRootage. SIIG is better on XBLA if you can get it but it's still good on phone.
So I'm new to iPhone gaming -- if I wanted, say, three shmups, which would be the best out of that bunch?
I'd say one of the Cave-developed games -- either DoDonPachi or Espgaluda II -- is a must-have. Expect to pay $9 for one of them, but they're the highest quality.
Second, I'd go with Icarus-X for 3D shmup fun.
To round things out, maybe the free Space Deadbeef for a horizontal take on shmups.
That way, you'd have a good variety.

If you're new to iPhone gaming, I suggest you put together a wishlist on Appshopper, and put any shmups that interest you on your wishlist. That way, when they drop in price, you'll get immediate notification.

Thanks for the recommendation, Dims!
I"m not a fan of Space Invaders Infinity Gene. I greatly prefer playing the original. Don't forget R-Type. It's quite good.
Not a big fan of R-Type. It's a solid port of an okay shmup but R-Type 1 and 2 for XBLA is better for the retro graphics switch, the level select, the bundle of both games, and the optional "infinite lives but you're scored on winning with as few deaths as possible" mode, which I rather like, a lot better than a brutal 8-bit era rage fest dropped onto my Iphone touch screen.

SIIG is definitely different. I wouldn't say it's a particularly good shmup but it's a unique flavor compared to the Cave/Touhou/Castle Shikigami variety and it's fun. I can see where people wouldn't like it.

Personally, I think both EG2 and DDP are must haves, Iphone-wise. All the others I've tried have been a wash.

The side-scrolling shmup Cell War has dropped to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/cell-war/id337056997?mt=8).

"Cell War is a horizontal-scrolling shoot'em up arcade game.
Driving the nano machine, your mission is to fight fearful viruses and save human from disease! Diving into the microworld. Be ready for the challenges you never met before.

Tilt to move and fire.
Touch enemies to fire missiles.
Generate shockwave to chain kill enemies and shield yourself from bullets.
Fight against huge viruses."
You guys think Espgaluda II will ever go on sale again?
Nope. At least not until the day after you decide to buy it.

What a difference a day makes. Just when I was wishing more of the games from the all-in-1 Logic Gamebox made by AppZap would get released for free, here it is! Telescope is another puzzler currently free that was extracted from the all-in-1. Now 3 more and we'll have the whole 7 games for free!

http://itunes.apple.com/app/telescope/id396420121?mt=8

Wordi looks like a Taboo sort of game but using your iPhone/iPod as the cue cards and buzzer in one. Some good reviews but who knows if it's genuine reviews.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/wordi/id396418596?mt=8

MagicTank is currently free. It looks pretty new with little to no reviews so far. It looks like an isometric view military rts game. But hey, it's free and looks decent.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/magictank/id395525588?mt=8

Texaco Classic Pinball is another new game that has no reviews but I've been personally looking for a fun pinball game for my iPhone for a while so free is definitely worth a download and try to me.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/texaco-classic-pinball/id396576754?mt=8

Gunner is an asteroids like game but you're a chicken in a spacecraft defending from asteroids inbound.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/gunner/id367889177?mt=8

Robo Run Mini is another new game with only one review (probably by developer) but looks promising

http://itunes.apple.com/app/robo-run-mini/id391077601?mt=8

Game description: The game of next generation graphics comes to iPhone and iPod touch. Only two words to keep in mind. Run - Dodge. Make your Robo cover the maximum distance without colliding with obstacles. Key trick to excel in the game is to maintain your momentum right and make the right choice at the right time. Obstacles provide you to choose between three dodge modes. Jump, Leap and ROll. Each of these modes has its own impact on the rbots momentum. Take the jump instead of leap in a situation and you loose your momentum needed for the next obstacle. So right choice at the right time is important. To add a litte bit of push, the speed of the character keeps incrementing at regular levels of score. As the game progresses it tests your Reflexes, observation and decision making skills to the limits. Introductory price $0.99 only. Grab it soon....

Ok, I just got my iPod yesterday. I know I asked about texting here before but it seems you can't text unless you have a cell phone number to receive messages through (or at least you can't receive reply's to your messages). Which kind of defeats the point of free texting since you would have to pay for a cell phone.

I assume if i put a cell phone number into one of these apps like text free that there would be some sort of charge on the phone bill in addition to what is already paid.

So my question is, is there an app that definitely lets you text and receive messages over wifi without having to put in a cell phone number?
