This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

The new FAAD featured game is Doug Brown (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doug-brown/id396448874?mt=8).

"My name is Doug Brown. I’m a private detective. You hire me when you don’t want publicity, going to the police isn’t possible, and your conscience can’t or won’t consider any other options. Today I got such a case – the phone rang, a voice told me where to go and what time to be there. But my gut tells me the rest of it isn’t going to be so easy.

Doug Brown for iPhone is a thrilling ride through gritty detective fiction. With only your trusty revolver and finely-honed wits, lead Detective Brown through an action-packed, nerve-wrenching tale of dirty dames, double-crosses and suspicious characters, all in search of the truth…"

Does anyone know if Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 has ever gone on sale for anything less than $4.99?
I want to get it but not at that price, since I don't know how I will like the controls.

Yes, I bought it at $1.99 last month (end of september, I think).

Hmmm, that's a pretty cool little site to keep in mind I guess.
Just got an iPod and am still new to everything.

It'd be nice if it would drop before next Monday, since I have a flight to Qatar from S.C., but doubtful. I'll probably end up springing for it at the airport anyway. Hopefully it controls well.
Hope they have wifi there. Apps over a certain size don't download over 3G. I assume THPS2 is too big.
He said he has an iPod (so... Wifi is all it has anyway).

Short Monday morning update:

Crazy Cubes just dropped to free, a fun puzzler with an isometric view.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/crazy-cubes/id395501878?mt=8

Scarecrow is a decent jumper game and currently free.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/scarecrow/id331097906?mt=8

Orbattle is the latest Openfeint free game of the day... I can't help but feel like this has gone free before. It's decent at best.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/orbattle/id397037152?mt=8

XT is a new shooter that's currently free if you want to give it a try

I know - you will hate the controls because it is horrible. If you go to an AT&T store they have THPS2 running in demo mode on the phones there. I tried it just the other day and couldn't play at all - there is no way to tell where your fingers are on the d-pad and buttons.

iTrials is an introductory priced at 99 cents Trials HD clone. The graphics need a retina display update, and that's promised to be coming (as well as iPad HD), and the controls could use a tweak or two, but after an initial period of uncertainty I think I like it. It's certainly the closest to Trials HD I've seen, and seeing how Trials HD seems to be a Microsoft exclusive, I think any official Trials HD game is going to be limited to Windows Phone 7. This may be as close as we get. And yes it seems to play pretty well once you figure out the controls. I haven't played very far, so don't misconstrue this as a glowing endorsement (yet?). They are promising an update shortly which will move the slider control to the left (good!) and add tilt controls, but I rather like the slider control. That's what makes it work well now.

Thanks! stickwars was on my wishlist for a while now.

I promised Crunc I'd share my impressions of the Alice in Wonderland game. Unfortunately, it's not on sale anymore (but it's still less than its original $4.99 price tag). Nonetheless, it's a pleasant enough platformer with typically high Disney production values and plenty of polish (lush background music, pretty visuals, etc.). I've only played through the first few levels and so far the extent of the puzzles is figuring out which character works best for a given situation. You can switch between Alice, the rabbit, or the Cheshire Cat (so far) and each one has different attributes. Alice is the only character who actually moves, however, so you end up constantly switching back and forth between her and one of the others (but always returning to Alice). Anyway, for .99 it's not a terrible blind buy. It's a bit on the easy side so far and I don't know how much replay value it'll have, but I'll keep playing it for a bit longer to see how it progresses. Now that the price has gone back up, I can't say I really recommend it at full price. If you're interested in it, or if you have a child who enjoys platformers, I'd wait for it to go back on sale and pick it up then.

11-2-10 Morning update:

Absolute craptastic. Nothing new and nothing free that's worth trying even so feel free to move on to other threads. :)

The new OpenFeint Free Game of the Day is Kick the Zombie (http://itunes.apple.com/app/kick-the-zombie/id366629575?mt=8). Seems pretty self-explanatory:
"Kick the zombie as far as possible.

Gain money and buy guns.
or change a leg.
Some items will help to avoid traps and to gain money."

The new FAAD featured game is Monster Trucks Nitro (http://itunes.apple.com/app/monster-trucks-nitro/id307242022?mt=8).
"Race, jump and nitroboost your way pass thrilling dynamic levels with your monster trucks. Earn medals and unlock new levels and vehicles!

Latest update adds a new type of driving experience with special USA Stars & Stripes Monster Truck! The update also includes new developments to the highly-appraised physics and graphics of the game, taking the game-play and feel of controlling the huge monster trucks even further."

I don't have an touch, but I do have an iPad and it has a page limit (I think 10). It still lets me install apps once the page limit is reached but doesn't display the app icons... the only way to access them is to perform a search. If you delete some apps and power cycle then the apps not shown on a page fill in the missing spaces.

Surprised it took you this long to hit the limit, it's time for you to embrace folders.
Reckless Racing is on sale for $.99. I picked it up after just hearing how good it is.
Thanks for the heads up. Bought it just because of the sale.

Just got the e-mail about Reckless Racing and I'm downloading it now.

Where do you guys buy iTunes gift certificates? Any discounts?

fuck, just bought Reckless Racing last week. Knew I should have waited since it seems EA always drops their games a week or 2 after release.

You can usually save about 10% if you buy from eBay. Just make sure you don't have to pay shipping.

I see commercials for Cardwoo.com, but it doesn't seem to have iPhone cards in stock. Their savings are only about 5 - 15%, too, and I don't know if they charge shipping.

How's the poker game? Worth my time/space on my iPhone, or should I pass? I already have the Apple poker game that they released when they launched the first iPhone, and I never really play it, plus it's HUGE.
In for Reckless. Glad I waited!
Yeah, I plan on waiting for NBA Elite 11 to drop too after it debuts this weekend.

For me personally, it's the best poker app on the iPhone. Definitely worth a look.

11/3/10 Morning update:

Maiden Flight is a new and fun 3D runner game where you're an eagle trying to fly as far as you can.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/maiden-flight/id397951337?mt=8

Tris Revenge is a decent tetris clone worth a play if you have a minute to kill

http://itunes.apple.com/app/tris-revenge/id364195577?mt=8

Colour pop is another tetris clone that has dropped to free again.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/colour-pop/id385100149?mt=8

Kungfu World is currently free. not sure how to describe this one, it's like a fighter... but with taichi. Worth a look, nice graphics and decent fun to be had.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/kungfu-world/id363482916?mt=8

Doodle Germs just dropped to free. A doodle graphics match-three game.

http://itunes.apple.com/app/doodle-germs/id391293950?mt=8

Ra (designed by Reiner Knizia) briefly debuted at $6.99 but just dropped to it's intro price of $4.99! It's a universal app this time, by the makers of the R.K. iOS game Medici. Medici is really well done, though it doesn't yet have online play, and neither does Ra, but the dev is promising online for both in future updates. They are active on the toucharcade.com forums, so I think I trust them. YMMV. :)

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ra-designed-by-reiner-knizia/id400213892?mt=8

EDIT: Hmm... "This item is currently being modified. Please try again later." Dang. Guess I'll try again later!

The game is now available again - downloading as I type!

Excellent! Now that Costco has stopped carrying anything Apple-related, I need to replenish my stock of discounted iTunes cards. Wonder if you can get this deal online? I really hate wading through the WalMart herds. . .especially on a weekend. In any case, thanks for the heads-up!
