Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

There won't be a triple physical as they can't fit everything in one cart.
true, was dissapointed that the publisher didnt release the plus versions in last years triple pack for the ps3, seems even if they did a ps4 triple pack release they wouldnt include the dlc again anyway

Zoids has the chance to be a good strategy or action game, but that Xbox 360 Atlus game was horrid. Didn't help that everything was a slightly browner shade of brown unless you pay for color packs.

Ok, yes. Considering my (incomplete Canadian) LE to be worthless garbage is hyperbole. But not really wrong. Look at what happens to AAA games that follow this sort of release model. Some examples that spring to mind is me buying Shadows of Mordor for $7CAD, brand new. Umm, Bioshock Infinite for $5, White Knight Chronicles for $5 too. All brand new, this stuff always happens, releasing a clearly superior product makes the old product undesirable junk.
Cry moar.

Nothing wrong with asking for something on a platform that supports it. Steam does uncesored releases, an arguement can be made for bringing an uncensored version of CG.

If anything you should cry at yourself for supporting a platform that censors such content in a country that shys away from such content due to repressed natures. Just because you are willing to take it doesn't mean the rest of us have to.

Thought it was too good to be true.. But yesterday on PsVita Reddit someone posted about Bravely Default being $20 at Target-
Headed out this morning and low & behold I located a nice and crispy sealed copy of Bravely Default for the 3ds..
I did have to ask an "associate" for help as there was only Bravely Second on the shelf. I mentioned that I had the item # if she could check if there was any copies in stock...
I gave her the DPCI 207-02-1470.. Says she has 1 in stock.. Disappears to the back and emerges with Bravely Default in hand.
Never got to play due to being busy and then the price at Gamestop going far higher than expected.. I'm hoping it should be good.

It's sold out already.

Play-Asia has it in-stock. http://www.play-asia.com/river-city-tokyo-rumble/13/70ab9p
I went ahead and grabbed one from PA, just in case it doesn't get relisted on Amazon.

Is River City supposed to be a limited print or something?
This may have just sold out of the "bonus" keychain qty's, and may be relisted as a stand alone game at some point, as I can't imagine it sold out completely in one day, but demand for physical seemed pretty high, and some of developers really don't want to be bothered to sit on qty's long term, so who knows?

It's now listed as in-store only at Bull Moose, however most locations seem to have it in stock (for those that live in northern New England).

I also read somewhere that Groupon may carry the game, so possible check there every so often. Groupon tends to have a lot of coupon codes too, and is currently 6% cash back on Ebates.

I was searching all over the place for this game... Best Buy has it for $9.99 ($8.99 w/ GCU), but virtually no Best Buy on the planet has it in stock.

I called my local Target right after seeing your post, and luckily they have one! Thanks for spreading the info!! <3

(Not technically a Japanese niche game, but come on)

Doomsday is upon us: The new Sonic Boom game on 3DS is...actually OK/good?!

Destructoid (7/10)

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice isn't the worst Sonic game I've ever played. It isn't terrible. The platforming and sense of speed are here, though just not as fun as you might remember them. The whole affair is rather ugly -- which can't only be blamed on the 3DS, though it doesn't help -- and the game isn't exactly long at a few hours to complete, if that. Hardcore fans of the series will probably get some enjoyment out of this, but for the full price of $40, it is hard to recommend to anyone else. If you're desperate for another Sonic game, you could do worse.
DualShockers (8/10)

Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice is a very fun game. It will receive a lot of hate for simply being a Sonic Boom title, but you can tell Sanzaru Games was determined to deliver a quality 2D Sonic game. While not without a few major problems, Sonic fans and fans of the show will definitely enjoy this game for what it is. If one can get past the fact that Sonic Boom now has more titles in it than the Sonic Adventure series, they can find this very engaging and enjoyable handheld experience with this game.
IGN (7.5/10)

While Fire and Ice’s art direction and music are woefully generic, the well-constructed level layouts create a solid arcade-style experience that accomplishes a sense of extraordinary speed while accommodating a reasonable degree of control. Sonic Boom successfully draws from much of what makes the best of classic Sonic game play satisfying, sprinkles in a better-conceived exploratory structure, and remixes it into an intelligent, cohesive, and rewarding package.

Are "Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters" & "Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs" two completely different games, meaning I should buy both?

Or should I just buy "Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs"?
Daybreak: Special Gigs is an enhanced version of the original. So you only need to buy Daybreak if you're thinking of purchasing either of the games. Gameplay was revamped/changed as well as new/expanded scenes and dialogue, which is why you see people say that it feels like it's an entirely different game.

From what I've heard, the original wasn't that good. No idea about the enhanced version.

After seeing people here talk about The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, I decided to check it out. To me it looks similar to Final Fantasy 0... is that an accurate assumption?

If you mean FF Type-0, then no, that isn't an accurate comparison. Trails of Cold Steel is an old-fashioned turn-based JRPG with lots of character development and dialogue while Type-0 is more of an action-RPG (closer to Kingdom Hearts) with greater emphasis on the gameplay.

The only thing both of those games share is the fact that the protagonists belong to an "elite" class of students at a military academy. Otherwise they're completely different.

No. Final Fantasy Type-0 is shit. Cold Steel is at the very least passable so long as you don't mind the pacing issues and long length.

Actually the gameplay is nothing alike. Type-0 is action based whereas Cold Steel (or Trails in general really) is more along the lines of Grandia or Lunar, which is more traditional turn-based gameplay with a battlefield to move around in.

I'd give a more honest opinion, but mine is rather very extremely lopsided as per my opening statement.

I honestly can't so I really ENJOYED FF Type 0, but I played it enough to get the platinum because of my stubborn loyalty to Japanese games.

Both The Legend of Heroes 1 and 2 look pretty cool, so I'll definitely buy them whenever they pop up on a sale. Probably wont be soon though since I see that they were released pretty recently.

It's actually Legend of Heroes VIII (I think?), but for ease of naming it's easier to call it the Kiseki series or Trails series. There are more than just those two games.

Trails in the Sky & Trails in the Sky SC - (PSP/PC) - First games in the trails series and both games make up the 'Liberl Arc'.

Trails in the Sky the 3rd - (PC 2017) - Self contained story that sets up the meta story for the rest of the series. Takes place a little after the 'Liberl Arc' and uses different main characters.

Trails of Zero / Azure - (Japan Only) - Unreleased here and they are their own arc too called the 'Crossbell Arc'. Takes place several months after 'Trails in the Sky the 3rd'. New main characters again.

Trails of Cold Steel I & II - (PS3/Vita) - Takes place parallel to the 'Crossbell Arc' more or less. Both games make a self-contained Arc that I'm not sure what to call it since III was announced. New main characters again.

Trails of Cold Steel III - (In Development) - Takes place after the Cold Steel I & II Arc. There's a lot of speculation, but nothing concrete. Main character is the same as Cold Steel I & II, but we know nothing more than that.

Before you ask "Do I need to play the rest first?" No, not really. It certainly helps though. You get a lot of references from various other games that include past event spoilers and name drops in later games within the series. Each arc has its own self-contained story, but they all have a meta story that continues through all the arcs. There's also a ton of lore and world building that makes certain things much more meaningful/impactful if you have proper context.

Also, this series has its NPCs actually have personality and their own personal character arcs that update after story events. It's worth it to talk to them if you don't consider it a time waster. Helps invest ones self into the story.

Yes. You'll get whatever the game would come with if you bought it new.

I can validate this yes with a second yes. I've purchased at least 8 games from Gamefly (Vita, PS3, PS4, and 3DS), and they've all come with the case/booklet and in great condition.
