Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I don't see how you can compare Etrian Odyssey to RPGMaker games, but the whole post came off as trolly anyway.

I do have to say they are a bit too similar to each other, but many dungeon crawlers are similar anyway. I am a bit tired of them too, after playing Etrian Odyssey 4 a while back, but they are still solid games.

I think just playing too many similar games can do that a person. I'm just about to reach my critical point for VNs for a while.

Received my copy of Labyrinth from Amazon for the wrong platform. Got a huge runaround from CS. Only got an option for a refund, and the refund doesn't cover a new order since the 20% discount is dead (RIP). Had to spend 20 minutes with a rep to get a $10 credit to cover the difference.

Amazon Customer Service is not what is used to be.

Yeah, I had a similar issue last Friday, when Amazon sent me an NS game my son wanted, and it was a EU region copy. I spent about 30 minutes in chat, with two reps and last a supervisor. The best I was able to get was an instant Amazon credit for the amount in question, so that way I could buy a e-shop card, and bought the game digital. Honestly, I thought I was dealing with Gamestop or someplace, as the attitude of the second guy was actually borderline rude, which I had never had happen before.

I've found that rolf is an amazing sniper once he gets babied enough.  By level 10 he was able to kill most enemies on his own.  Now as a lv1 sniper he'll be an unstoppable killing machine minus anything that attacks him up close.  I didn't know he could promote as I thought he was like sothe and eternally sucked.

I dunno if anyone missed it, but CAG Twitter posted a Playasia 10% off thing if you use Paypal to check out, lasts until October 15th. Doesn't work on digital stuff I think, and has to be over $60. Might be a good time to get all of those Asia exclusives, and exclusive physical copies in. I think I'm gonna get the Caligula Effect Overdose CE with this.
Does that discount automatically apply when you check out with PayPal? I got almost all the way through checkout with some stuff today but at the order confirmation page it still didn't show the discount.

I already have most of the good PS1 games downloaded on my PSTV.

What else was I going to use that thing for.

The PS1 Mini is a great idea, but it doesn't appeal to me personally as much as the NES and SNES ones. Primarily because I was an adult while all these ps1 games and systems were still in circulation. "Oh man, that was so cool when I was a kid" is a different feeling than "I remember buying and playing the heck out of that game."

The PS1 Classic will likely see really well. There is a generation that grew up on the PS1, just as there are generations that grew up on the classic Nintendo systems. It's been long enough that most people with nostalgia for the PS1 will likely have the $100 needed to pick one of these things up.

It will actually be an easier sell for lapsed gamers and/or more casual gamers. A lot of "core" gaming fans have hung onto a lot of their Sony-related systems. And as such, they likely already have playable digital versions of most PS1 games for the PSP, PS3, and PS Vita. (and PSTV) If you have a PSN account, and have any interest in classic gaming, you probably already have a hefty collection of PS1 classics. I know I do. There was no other way that I was going to get a legal, playable copy of Tron Bonne. I am going to be interested to see if this PS1 classic brings anything new to the table in terms of performance. Also, how easy it will be to hack it. I give it six months, and that's being generous.

As far as titles it ought to have...

1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

2. Suikoden 2

3. Chrono Cross

4. Vagrant Story

5. Metal Gear Solid

Yes, the actual standard for the PS1 was not to have any analog sticks. (hence why the PS1 Classic controllers don't have any) Metal Gear Solid supported analog sticks, but didn't require them. Ditto for Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross. The majority of PS1 titles can be played without analog sticks. The analog sticks didn't become standard until the PS2.

That's a relief. Hopefully the remaining 15 titles are top-shelf picks.

That PlayStation Classic looks pretty cool. I'll likely get it since I actually never owned a PS1. I was a poor kid and only had a N64 lol

Man, Nintendo really started a thing with those mini consoles, eh?

They don't really do it for me, but I can see their appeal. Just sort of redundant for me, as a collector. Plus, it's not a true NES experience unless you're doing a lot of blowing trying to turn it on.

If they revealed the full game list I would think about ordering it. I just can't and lacking the dual analog sticks is a bit lazy, though they weren't always used.

Also, the actual controller ports on this thing look like they are USB, and definitely not the original proprietary ports that the PS1 and PS2 used. It's likely that standard USB controllers will work with it. I would even say that its likely that third-party controllers will be adapted for it quickly. In particular, I think the 8bitdo USB dongle will most likely get patched to support it.

I am quite curious to see how this thing is going to handle game saves, as I don't think the memory card ports on this thing are going to be functional. If we're lucky, it will be possible to back up save games to a PC, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that functionality out of the box.

Now if Microsoft came out with an Xbox Mini, that would be hilarious.

I wouldn't mind a Dreamcast Mini though. I missed out of the Dreamcast completely

Sadly, the Dreamcast is in a weird no-mans-land thanks to Sega bowing out of gaming hardware. Recently, Sega's beein doing all of their legacy stuff through ATGames, who suck at producing classic emulation systems. Nintendo's mini systems aren't the best, but they are reasonably polished and have decent production values.

A Dreamcast emulation box is possible, Dreamcast emulation is mature enough to cover a respectable selection of games. And Sega themsevles have a sizable enough first-party presence from the Dreamcast era that they could stock out a box like that easily enough. Throw in a smattering of third-party classics, and you're good to go. The only real issue is the hardware power, and optimizing the whole package for modern screens. The Dreamcast had some hefty processing under its hood, so a micro computer emulating the system would need to be a bit beefier than what's in the NES and SNES classics. And of course, the internal storage would also need to be much more respectable. GD-Roms could store close to 1.4 Gigabytes, and some Dreamcast games even came on multiple discs. A 20-game Dreamcast collection would need at least 15-20 Gigs of built-in storage. You'd probably want to have 32 gigs built into the system itself.

I just have this vision that someone's going to crack open the playstation mini and find a pstv board inside with a custom firmware.
Lol, I could see them doing that with all those unsold PSTVs

I'm hopeful those USB ports at least let you plug in a ps3/ps4 controller and get analog support.

I'm pretty sure I read on their FAQ that the memory card slot is just for show and it has an on board virtual memory card. I imagine it works like how the PS3 handles PS1 memory cards

I also barely played the Dreamcast and never owned one, so I'd be interested in getting one too :) I wonder how they would handle the controllers, especially when it comes to the VMU...

Thanks! Don't know if it will be worth getting, but placed an order just in case (though I imagine this will be available in larger quantities then Nintendo's classics)
I guess I'm alone in hoping the PS classic will flop hard. No analog sticks, just the original crappy controllers. Also, Sony could have added PS1 backwards compatibility to the PS4 easy (just like literally every single PS2 and PS3 model).

Finally, a lot of these early polygon games.... they haven't aged too well compared to pixel art.

I just realized the Playstation Classic doesn't even come with an AC adapter. Uhh.....what? At $100 you'd think it would come with everything needed.

I'm sure I can plug the USB into a suitable power source, but still....this seems pretty dumb.
