The following thread are for niche-based Japanese video games by smaller companies such as Atlus, NIS America, AKSYS, XSEED, D3 Publisher, KOEI/TECMO, SNK Playmore, Ignition, Natsume or any sweet deals for those who are passionate and hardcore about Japanese video games even from the bigger companies like SquareEnix, Sega, Bandai Namco, etc.

But to avoid any messiness of links everywhere, we'll focus on games within the last 2-3 years as opposed to the last five-ten. [although, if you do see older titles on sale, please post them regardless].

The theme of these deals are Japanese video games distributed in the US by the smaller niche companies. The thread is literally for those who love Japanese games.
There will be a few Korean games that you may see on this list, such as the "DJ Max" games.

If you see a deal, please post!

NOTE: Please check the most recent page for the latest deals.

And I want to thank many of you in advance who submit their deals and their support!!!
I wish Trails in the Sky would get a sale again. I really regret not getting it on Amazon way back when.
I don't know if we'll get it localized here, but there is an HD version of Trails in the Sky coming out in Japan in December for PS3. Might want to wait for that instead of getting the PSP one anyway.
Wow nice, I'll just get it there instead then. Those were pretty much the only reasons I wanted to order from NIS. Dont see a bigger box, a sponge, and a towel being worth 15$ to me.
I am also only interested in the art book and soundtrack, but I can't order from Gamestop, ah well.

Also, I was wondering, is there a market for that Barrel shirt that came with the Meruru LE?

Just checked Aksys Games online store. And they are now selling the alternate cover art for Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.

Anyway, been thinking about picking up the Bit-Trip collections. I wonder if the stickers are included in the ones from Amazon? I heard that the soundtrack is included in the Wii version. I wonder if the 3DS version comes with a soundtrack.

The greater mystery though is how the Aksys Games' online store says for both versions of Bit-Trip games: "Psychedelic Background not included." I wonder what they meant about that?

Interesting! I wonder if it will be a different Soundtrack Cd and Artbook than the LE from the NISA site. Although it seems a little odd for either to be completely different ones.

I think there's a higher chance of that than getting the sequels on the PSP.

Even with the script translated, they would still have to go and translate the actual game. It would still be a huge time sink for them just to release a product that they've already released. I think they realize that spending time on that instead of part 2 would probably piss some people off. Plus, an HD remake of an extremely niche PSP JRPG. Yeah, it's just not happening... lol

Thank you kindly kndy!

I just bought my first ever Cave shooter (well, I was going to buy Deathsmiles one day anyway but I might as well get it now because I was looking at the limited edition as a preferred choice...yeah I'm rambling now, my bad, LOL)!
Hah, I'm honestly amazed that so many of the Deathsmiles "limited" editions are still readily available and for a cheap price. I guess people started to abandon custom faceplates quickly. :D
seeing how the slim can't use faceplate people don't care about them anymore.

Just wanted to post a follow-up about the Mugen Souls Pre-order bonus at GS (artbook and soundtrack with the standard version of the game) vs. the soundtrack and artbook included with the Limited Edition at NISA's online store.

The artbook that comes with the standard edition at GS is different than the artbook included in the Limited Edition at NISA's online store, but both soundtracks that come with each are the same. Here's the email I received when I wrote to NISA's support:

Thank you very much for your interest in Mugen Souls. Regarding yourquestion the limited edition gets an additional art book, hand towel, and asponge. The additional art book is has different contents from the standardedition. The soundtrack however, remains the same. I hope we were able to answer your question.

Bleh, still gonna go with Gamestop. I love NIS, but hate the way they do their Limited Editions now. Damn near every time I order something via shipping, it arrives it messed up condition.

Really? Everything I ordered from NISA has arrived in pristine condition, since they ship it in a box, and the item itself is wrapped in bubble wrap. Quite secure, IMO

Most of their stuff was fine, but I assume the FedEx monkeys just go crazy on the package. Unless its extremely cheap or my only option, I just prefer physical retailers.

So does that mean the Gamestop and NIS artbooks will be completely different or will the GS one not have as much content as the NIS one or what?

Thats very odd. I have only got one damaged item and they took care of it super fast. IN fact their customer service is awesome and usually goes above and beyond. I got replacment disks for my anime super quick and fast, and when i complained they were a bit scuffed they imideatly sent replacments again without me even asking

Did you ever contact them and ask for a replacment or just go 'oh its messed up, screw these guys!'

*sigh* wish i could get Mugen Souls, but i just refuse to get a censored game. Has some intersting bonus items with it

Actually, most of the orders I were referring to were mostly from other sites. I have only ordered from NIS twice recently, once the box was dented, the other one was fine.

But for some reason, Fed Ex loves to beat the crap out of my box before delivering to me. Like 3+ of my recent Amazon/Newegg orders were beaten to hell.

Well, i can relate to that. I got tons of Amazon orders messed up. My mailman took a few limited edition artbooks and folded them in half to stick them in the mailbox instead of just leaving them at my god damn door. The number of damaged items ive been getting from Amazon coupled with the fact that they now charge sales tax means im pretty much done with them for most of my gaming needs

Hmmmmmm... I wonder if the soundtrack is just bundled in the regular edition period. I pre-ordered mine off of NewEgg with the $12 off pre-order code, would be great to get the OST too. I'm not counting on it, but it would be nice :D
Not really a deal, but Atlus announced Etrian Odyssey IV is coming to North America early 2013.
How is that series? I have a few of them still sealed but have never played any. I think i have 2 copies of III with the artbook, one still in the amazon package it shipped in

^_^x KD

Etrian Odyssey is definitely hard, but in a good way. The main game divided into 50 floors and it really feels like an accomplishment just to be able to clear one of them. Filling out your own map is actually pretty fulfilling and I actually enjoyed doing so; but if you're not interested in that, GameFaqs has completed maps. The skill tree is also deep and requires planning so you don't get stuck with lousy skills, but you're able to reset skills for a small drop in levels. The music's great and the environments are varied an look great for a DS game.

I own/beat/enjoyed the hell out of the first two, but I missed out on getting the third one when Amazon had it on sale. That one changed the gameplay by changing character classes and adding a sailing mechanic.

Do you need to have played the first Etrian Odyssey in order to enjoy the second Etrian Odyssey?

I'm thinking about getting into this series, but might just jump into the fourth game on the 3DS if I can't track down the first 3 games at a reasonable price.

Do you feel it's necessary to play the older games in the series first if I'm interested in picking up IV? I've read that there have been mechanical adjustments in each game, but I don't know how they would affect my enjoyment of them (like if I wanted to go back to I-III after playing IV).

The first game came out during a 5-year period where I had stopped paying attention to games altogether, so I never really knew what the series was about until I heard about it while looking for Strange Journey info.

edit: Ha, beaten. That's what I get for leaving windows open.

No, the games are not story-driven at all. You create your own party from the get-go.

No, not really, it's not a sequel per se, just a game with the same basic mechanics (I think they are probably set in the same world, but it's been a while since I played either of them).

Thank you both for the input! Saves me $60-90 (I'm guessing) tracking the first 3 down. Hopefully I'll enjoy EO IV.

they were fun games until you got to a floor boss where you were forced to grin up 15 levels just to beat it just to fall to the next floor boss 5 levels down and have to do it again

i think how it went from easy to hard was

1
3
2

2 was a nightmare for me ..while 1 was almost a cake walk

Same here. Only reason I won't get Mugen Souls is because it's censored. I wish more people felt this way. When people pay for censored products they're only hurting themselves in the long run.

Um, every EO has been 5+1 Sanctums, with 5 floors per Sanctum in I&II, and 4 floors in III. The last Sanctum is always after the main story, and is much harder.
That one changed the gameplay by changing character classes and adding a sailing mechanic.
None of the EOs have the same classes. Sailing in III was also optional, accessible outside the main dungeon. It's basically a larger 2 room dungeon limited by your movement distance instead of your health/tp.

Eh, it's a dungeon crawler. If you don't want to level up for the next boss, you're playing the wrong genre. I didn't have to "grind", but I fought every random encounter.

EO1 was easy only if you knew what to do with your paladin, and had a medic. They were basically required in the party. If you didn't have a paladin or medic specced with defense abilities, you probably couldn't get anywhere, so people didn't like this.

In EO2, they changed it so you didn't have to have a paladin type, so you can run with just about any class. Of course, there were a few overpowered classes (Hexer, especially, who can KO bosses in 1-2 hits).

EO3 was more balanced, but it ended up being the easiest, IMO. It was also the shortest, since it had less levels. I spent about 110 hours on 1, 120 hours on 2, and maybe 90 on 3. This is with all main game maps 100%, and most of end game.

They're all worth playing. But if you skip one, I'd skip 1 just because of the paladin/medic requirement.

Normally I wouldn't if there was an alternative. I don't want to spend more money to import something I can't enjoy reading or listening to. I like the dubbed voices, no matter how bad they could be. I enjoy all the extra stuff thrown in the limited editions, no matter how silly. (Like the...sponge...thing?)

Besides, I whore myself out for almost anything NISA releases, and if something like a negligible mini-game is going to full-stop an entire release of a game I'm looking forward to from a publisher I enjoy supporting year after year, then I support their choice.

But you're right, though. I'm hurting myself by thinking "oh they won't edit anything ever again, unless it's something even worse" Next we know it, NISA decides to split Disgaea 5 in two separate releases with content removed and made into separate DLC packages....so I definitely can understand both sides of this.

What bugs me more is that they're including a sponge. They removed the friggin' bath scenes, so it makes no sense to include a sponge!

I know I'm just a lurker on this thread, so please feel free to flame away, but can we really not start this discussion on the thread again? The last time there was a censorship discussion it was very unproductive, even by internet standards.

I've seen 2 and 3 at a local video game store for ~$20 each. I haven't even finished the DQ series I bought last year, and they don't have the first game, so I haven't bothered picking these up. Thanks for the run-down of the series. Maybe I'll wait for a B2G1.
Same here. Only reason I won't get Mugen Souls is because it's censored. I wish more people felt this way. When people pay for censored products they're only hurting themselves in the long run.
No, we're really not. Have you ever bought a game that had a curse word censored? Did you immediately take it back to the store? It's the same principle yet I highly doubt you gave a shit.

Everyone seems to think that if we accept this little form of censorship, we'll accept any form of censorship. It's not black and white. There is a limit to what most people will accept. Most people will accept the censorship of a bathing scene of girls that look prepubescent. If they want to start censoring large blocks of the game that are slightly considered satirical of the government, then no, I doubt people will accept that.

It's a similar argument used by people who are against gay marriage. Well, if we let gays marry, what's next? Letting people marry animals? No, that's not next, that's not even a consideration. There is nothing next.

There's something called object sexuality, and some countries will not only let people marry animals, they'll let people marry objects.
