Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

There is a whole market for garage kit recasts.

What generally happen is hobbyist would create figures using resin (garage kit) and in various events like wonder fest in japan companies would often grant these hobbyist license to sell these kits during that time.

due to it being resin, these GK are often created in very limited quantity (because you can only use the same mold so many times so to obtain these GK, you have to be there and be fortunate enough to get to buy it.

Since these GK are usually very cool (and allow the builder of these kits to mod/paint however they like) and being so hard to get your hands on since you have to be there to buy it, there is a market for ppl selling resin recasts of these kits. There are people who go to these events to acquire kits to sell.

Once some company get their hands on these kits, they create molds using these parts and then sell these recasts. Quality varies, most agree those from thailand are generally pretty crappy (and ebay has a lot of these kits cheap). There are higher quality kits that y ou can buy which a lot of hobbyist enjoy since they can use it to create unique figures to their liking.

Then there is another market that sell prepainted GK. (and while they don't point it out, most often recasts since the original is pretty much impossible to find). Some of these creation can go up to thousands. like yeti arts

http://stores.ebay.com/YetiYetiGK?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

shadow x the main artist do wonderful work. expensive as hell. he also has a team working for him and they are usually cheaper to commission.

E2046 is one of the better/well place that sell GK. they also have a line call gathering which they prepaint the figure. It is actually of really good quality too. IMO better than official machine painted figures we buy and relatively cheap. (generally for 1/8 figures, $120-150 shipped.

some of the figures I love. click on the pic to bring up more pics once you click the link.

Asuka bike

https://www.e2046.com/product/7700

cost me $340 but check out the pics and the details.

Persona Metis

https://www.e2046.com/product/13743

kanu 2020

https://www.e2046.com/product/11567

To me, a lot of the official release are quite boring and it is getting to the point that this is where the fun is at. Sure, they are whatever ppl call them but they are far from the $10 bootleg figures you see on ebay. These are higher quality kick ass figures that's more display worthy.

TL:DR ya "unofficial" release :)
Super late Reply -

Okay, i think i get it. So a fan creates a fan made figure produces a limited amount of figures, than if the fan made figures catches the eye of a company, the company mass produces the figure. Did i got that right? Out of curiosity, do these company who take these figures and mass produce them, do they pay royalty to the creator.

BTW -

Cammy is finally getting a Bishoujo figure. I've been Dying ( not literally) to get my hands on a Cammy figure.

Luigi Nendoroid (June 2014):

Btw, the yen to dollar rate has been amazing lately. I paid for my December figures this morning and the PayPal rate was 1 USD = 102 JPY. This rate already includes PP's 2.5% foreign currency fee. I keep USD estimates conservative when posting prices here, usually around 93 - 95 yen per dollar. For example, Luigi Nendo would really be about $32.16 if purchased today, but above he is listed as $35. Keep in mind that currencies fluctuate over time. I have no idea what the yen rate will be in June when Luigi is ready for payment.
Yeah, i notice the same thing when i paid my figure off today, that yen is losing value to the dollar, which pretty nice for us who buy things from japan.

I just hope this trend lasts until the witch from Dragon's crown comes out!!!

Cammy is also getting a Real Action Hero figure: http://myfigurecollection.net/item/190306

Chun Li is getting the Bishoujo + RAH treatment as well.

I love the Kotobukiya Bishoujo line. They look amazing and are very affordable. There's a good chance Amazon will eventually have these if you want to save money (though she would be released later than Japan). I've already picked up a few DC and Marvel Bishoujo from Amazon.

I grab all of my Bishoujo at my local comic store. I end up paying full retail but it helps keep the store around... but I missed Kitty Pryde and the Amazon price has been taunting, I won't lie.

Finally received my Kos-Mos  ver. 4 Dollfie Dream  with 2 hand vulcan.

She is going to kick so much ass!

Will probably take her out sometime this weekend, but here she is still in boxes with DD Sakura Matou dressed in an outfit from Coolcat   :)

This is what she looks like, pic taken from somewhere ...

I stopped by a random comic store a few days ago. They had a lot of marvel and dc statues. Out of everything they had, the few Kotobukiya easily looked the best. They were also the only ones that weren't crazy expensive. I've bought all of my Bishoujo from Amazon (Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Catwoman, and Black Cat). Anime-Island would be another good place to buy these from, though Amazon should still be cheaper thanks to fsss/prime. I want to pick up Huntress, X23, Psylocke, and the upcoming Black Canary. Will wait for light months in 2014.

I don't know that series or character but she looks amazing. Congrats!

The one that came out like a 8 months ago? I remember ordering that like a year ago. Considering it was sold out before release, I wonder if CR requested a reprint.

WHY DID U SHOW ME THAT!!!!!!

Now i have to pre-order it. It looks awesome. Amazon has inflated prices for some KB figures, i just saw Asuka from Tekken going $100 and Alice for $80. I rather just order from Amiami.

BTW -- If anyone is interested in getting KB Mass Effect - Female Shepard V.2 (Black hair), the Bioware shop is selling her $39 with that 20% discount they have going on. With shipping the total comes out to $46, which is pretty good deal.

Amazon does have great prices on KBs when they come out. I got my Asuka for $51 from Amazon and my Christie for $52 FBA.

Can't wait for Cammy. My heart skipped a beat as soon as they announced a Street Fighter collection. The one thing I really want though is for Koto to be lenient with what they consider 'Street FIghter' and throw in a Morrigan. If they do that, my money is theirs for that AND whatever variant they want to do for it.

Dang, that is solid. Wish they had the redhead though :/

To be fair she is a faithful translation of the game's 2D character design to 3D. That said, I wouldn't want to display her either.

I am really looking forward to MegaHouse's Elf figure. I'm still maining her and close to reaching lvl 99. Such an awesome and addicting game. May pick up MegaHouse's Sorceress (if she comes out well) to display alongside Elf.

^ Don't know her but looks nice. I like what I've seen from Phat Company.

(no longer hidden since Bakemonogatari has a PSP game, thanks wasabi):

The much loved GSC Shinobu is up for timed pre-order as an exclusive re-release: http://goodsmile-global.ecq.sc/top/gscscawd00021.html

aDZkAft.jpg

She's been selling for at least $260 on second-hand market. So glad to finally be able to get her.

-Update-

So it turns out Shinobu's "exclusive" re-release means that the only shop in Japan selling her would be GSC Store. Outside of Japan though, GSC's partner shops will have her as well. Crunchyroll had a sale on her yesterday so I was able to order her for $70 w/ shipping instead of at least $100 w/ shipping from Japan.

I wish they would translate that PSP game. Would love to play through Bakemonogatari.

I'll stick with Kotobukiya and Sega for my Asuka Q needs. Also looking forward to how Alter's turns out.

Wonfes is coming up soon. Hopefully they announce new game figures and release dates for previously shown figures (like Figma Marth).

Ugh, I will no longer support AmiAmi except for any pre-orders that I currently have ordered.

Long story short, I ordered a $2 item with unreg. sal and it was lost. I asked AmiAmi what to do and they essentially told me "too bad, next time spend a few $$$ more to get tracking". No one in their right mind should have to pay $10 shipping for a $2 item, especially since it's Japan Post.

I reversed the transaction and just received an email saying to re-send the money or they will permanently close my account with them.

The ****? I re-sent it because I don't want to lose my pre-orders but holy ****. HLJ or bust from now on.

omg are you serious?

did you expect them to reimburse when you don't pick tracking? let me just claim every item I order sal w/o tracking as lost and expect to get my money back. hell, for all they know, it may still be on its way since sal time can vary greatly.

and you got a chargeback over this. omg, too bad you resent. I would prefer they just ban you.

all over $2.

If I own any kind of business, I wish to never have customers like you.

Lol. What, waiting two months doesn't call for a refund? I'm sorry but most SELLERS who run a business would love to make the customer stay loyal. I understand if this item was >$10-20 but it's ****ing $2!!!

I just got another email saying my account is still frozen and I can no longer choose unregistered SAL. LOL. Stupid company. You lost my business.

Last edited by a moderator:
I'm with wasabi on this one.  You didn't pay for tracking; you know there's a risk.  Doesn't matter how much the item costs.  The company isn't obligated to reimburse you.

What, waiting two months doesn't call for a refund?
Not for SALU. Unregistered SAL = no tracking + screwed if package lost. Registered SAL = tracking + insurance if package lost (up to 6000 yen).

Even if it were registered and lost, AmiAmi wouldn't be at fault. You would have to file a claim with the shipping company. Since they are foreign, I think the way it works is you file with USPS, who then files with Japan Post, and eventually you get your money back.

yes the buying selling system is buyer biased but my point stands

Pre-order link for Parfom Aegis in June: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-004423

There's also Nendoroid Aegis coming out in April: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-003490

Figma Aegis is still available at AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-MOE-6771

Haven't played a Persona game yet. Vita P4 Golden has been sitting patiently in my backlog.

Amiami has always been a bit rough to work with at times. Usually you can't cancel preorders at all or risk a banning. Sometimes they work with you sometimes they don't. I'm curious though, how much was shipping on the 2 dollar item?

Bottom line is they're a Japanese company offering some insane discounts to import buyers, so people will put up with them. I love HLJ but they seem to have their own problems filling preorders in order as well.

I already said I had preordered her, and Ami isn't my preferred shop, but thanks

I was also already aware of the Nendo and (new) figma versions, but the Parfom looks the best to me. Aigis has always weirded me out because of her feet (or lack thereof), but the Parfom looks so good to me that I don't mind as much. If this line ends up being on par with Cu-Poche, I'm in for the long haul.

Ami is… a strange beast. Their discounts are amongst the best out there, but they are absolutely awful for non-discounted items, since they leave sales tax in for overseas buyers (which they aren't supposed to do!), and their shipping practices and prices leave much to be desired.

Generally I stick with HLJ unless it's a super-hot item: much more flexible shipping options and superb customer service. I've had one or two unfulfilled preorders with them, but it hasn't been enough to turn me off from them entirely.

I still buy from Ami every so often, depending on the circumstances, but HLJ gets most of my business.

AmiAmi re-opened my account, so it's all good now...I guess.

I saw you had already pre-ordered her. I posted the links for others interested in Aegis ^^

Looking through the MFC pages, you aren't the only one to think the Parfom version of Aegis is the better representation of her. More people tend to be ordering her Nendo though, probably due to known quality and compatibility with existing Nendo collections.

For those of you preferring HLJ, I find myself in the opposite situation. They cancelled a few of my pre-orders last year due to inability to obtain stock, even when ordering many months in advance. I've also noticed that after their new agreement with PayPal near the end of last year, I am getting hit with an additional foreign transaction fee on my Visa cc on top of the usual PayPal currency exchange fee. I think a by-product of the agreement with PayPal lets the cc company know that this is a foreign transaction despite being charged in USD, allowing them to charge their additional fee. I will try using AmEx next time I checkout at HLJ since PayPal charges AmEx directly in yen.

Yeah, but you quoted me, so I wasn't 100% sure

Looking through the MFC pages, you aren't the only one to think the Parfom version of Aegis is the better representation of her. More people tend to be ordering her Nendo though, probably due to known quality and compatibility with existing Nendo collections.
For me, it's the level of detail and articulation, and especially the deformation proportions. I like superdeformed figures (including Nendos), but Parfom hits a particular sweet spot I never knew I had, and therefore I'm willing to give them a chance. Of course, it helps that Phat's a decent company.

That's weird. I have my bank account as my main PayPal source nowadays, but even when I was using a card, I didn't get hit with foreign fees unless I was using it directly at a store. It's a Mastercard, though, and I can't remember if I was still using it with PayPal when I set up my billing agreement with HLJ.

Crunchyroll has Elf as dotd for $83 ($74 with membership): http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/p/82474/Excellent-Model-Dragons-Crown-Elf-17-Scale

Free shipping at $75 with code SHINJI75.

CR states a March release date, but the Japanese date is June so don't expect a US release until July or August if no delays. CR pre-orders must be paid in full upfront. This is cheaper than AmiAmi by at least $20, but I already pre-ordered with them and wouldn't be able to pay today anyway.

damn, very good deal. good thing I am not interested in Dragon's Crown characters or else I would have to buy it.

Had the bow been a little cooler/more elaborate I may just get it for kicks.

Decided to buy the Elf from rightstuff. Any thoughts on this figure.I'm a huge fan of this series and this thing is huge, I'm just curious if there are any new designs coming out.

Thanks.

This year's Winter edition of WonFes is this weekend. It's one of the premier figure events, so if you're hoping to see new designs, keep an eye on what'll be unveiled there.
