MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Thread: UFC/Strikeforce

Not open for further replies.
I used to be hard on the Dot Net, but Sherdog has actually improved a lot, over the years, as a community. Bad seeds receive Pride-style yellow cards and usually get weeded out pretty quick. The UFC/Heavies board is surprisingly filled with competent, reasonable fans. For example, I have been pleasantly surprised with the replies in the "Nick Diaz wuz robbd" threads.

And if you haven't given a listen to their radio, I think you're missing out. Jack Encarnacao's revamped Rewind is perhaps the most insightful MMA program anywhere. Savage Dog Show, Jordan Breen Show, and Beatdown are all deserving of listens. Quality stuff. Makes my workouts quite enjoyable.

- Josh Koscheck-Johny Hendricks, Stephen Thompson-Matt Brown, and Chan Sung Jung-Dustin Poirier confirmed for UFC on FOX 3, UFC 145, and UFC on FUEL 3, respectively.

- Despite confirmation from Roger Gracie's management, Dana White has denied signing arguably the best grappler on Earth.

- Carlos Condit accepted the rematch Tuesday morning and didn't learn of Nick Diaz's positive drug test until Tuesday evening.

- Frank Mir-Cain Velasquez and Forrest Griffin-Tito Ortiz 3 have been confirmed by Lorenzo Fertitta.

Hendricks Vs. Koscheck should be a good fight! Hoping Hendricks pulls it out.

UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger is on Wednesday night and Comcast doesn't fuck carry Fuel TV! I'm so pissed!!!

Don't forget to vote for this thread in the 9th Annual Cheapy Awards! I know I barely post in here, but I am always checking it out. This is my go to place to get the latest.

Fuel TV is going to have a free preview week for the fight.

FUEL TV officials recently announced that they are offering a free-preview week from Feb. 13 to Feb. 19, which means even non-subscribers can tune in to watch the Feb. 15 event.

FUEL TV officials today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that multiple cable carriers – including AT&T U-Verse, Charter, Comcast, Cox and Suddenlink – will offer the preview.

Interested viewers can visit fuel.tv/getfueltv beginning Feb. 13 to find out if their service provider is participating in the preview.

are the sherdog podcasts still awful? tj desantis or whatever drove me away from those long ago. i guess the other thing that drove me away is most fighters are pretty bad interviews.

I wish Rogan's podcast focused more on fighting and UFC. Listening to 10 of fleslight and brain pill advertisements followed by Deadmau5 talking about how he's practically a God is turrble.
are the sherdog podcasts still awful? tj desantis or whatever drove me away from those long ago. i guess the other thing that drove me away is most fighters are pretty bad interviews.
In my honest opinion, I think Sherdog puts out the best stuff on the Internet. Jack Encarnacao's revamp of Rewind is the best insight into MMA anywhere. Essential episodes would be his sitdowns with Jim Ross, Nick Lembo, and Big John McCarthy.

I like TJ. Dude knows radio, has a great radio voice, and knows his stuff. The Jordan Breen Show, Beatdown, and The Savage Dog Show make my workouts seem shorter. Not just because each show is long, but because everyone knows their stuff and puts on quality shows. I guess that happens when you've been a part of MMA since the beginning. (I didn't find Sherdog until a friend worked for them several years ago.)

Just my two cents, tho.

Ugh I used to listen to "The Beatdown" which was full of annoying radio-esque ads and sound drops and shit. Podcasts are expected to have none of that nonsense if at all possible...maybe he's finally matured? He used to prattle on about baseball and limeade and all this shit whilst Josh Gross clowned on him constantly.

Jordan Breen is pretty awesome for how knowledgeable he is but I remember his show being very very dry because he just didn't have much personality. Never heard of Encarnacao or Rewind so maybe I'll try that at some point.

When I put the Sherdog stuff up against what, say the video game podcasts are like, the game podcasters are lightyears better (or at least they used to be)...maybe Sherdog finally caught up?

Just put my picks in on Sherdog. The toughest one imo was Herman vs Struve. For the first round Struves chin is a beautiful target for a guy like Herman but after round 1 I'm very suspicious of Herman's cardio and his ability to finish and I could easily see Struve winning via a submission of some sort. All in all though I'm feeling a tiny little bit better about Herman's chances so I went with him.

Overall I'm ranked 209 now. Hoping to get above 150 this time around.

Fair enough, Kaze. Different preferences and such. I still think Sherdog's shows are leaps and bounds better than anything out there. Two reasons for the radio-style sound. One, it's in fact real, live radio. (TJ operates the studio.) Two, TJ has a radio background.

If you haven't given it a listen, the latest Rewind with the creator of FightMetric is essential MMA education.

I'd give Rewind a chance. :) Jack is an incredible journalist. Sherdog is lucky to have someone of his caliber at their disposal.

First UFC on FUEL card is indeed today. Not digging the early, 3 p.m. prelims. Most of us in PST will still be at work.

Uploaded this at home before work. Diego Sanchez-Paulo Thiago from my collection. Diego has a stone chin, incredible cardio, and has a well-balanced game. Ellenberger has solid wrestling, good power, but has shown to freeze up when in disadvantageous positions. Diego has less power in his hands and has shown a tendency to stand-and-swing under pressure. Tough test for Jake. Tough road back to relevancy for Diego.

11:00 for the slam.

EDIT: Mak, I'm at 190. I was around 120 until the disaster that was the last PPV. Hahaha :(

Dont forget kiddos - prelims are on now on Facebook. First fight was meh but Tim Means looks pretty good. He might be one to keep an eye on in the future. Mixes it up, lots of different attacks.

That last fight almost made me wish I had gone but being on Wednesday with work tomorrow and the kids in school it just wasn't worth it esp since I hadn't heard of a bunch of the fighters when the tickets went on sale. Now I see why since a lot of them were fighting for the first time or two. They talked about what a good turnout there was but even today around noon I could still buy floor seats about 6 rows back ($100 a pop plus fees)

I am surprised that Ellenberger faltered like that in the last round. He gassed out a bit and I didn't like seeing that. Won like expected but didn't do too much as far as damage (aside from the cut caused by one elbow) and would have almost certainly tasted defeat in a 5 round fight, which doesn't look good for his future fights.

Mak, you're probably now ahead of me in the Pick Em. I did pretty poorly. I'm somewhere in the 220s now. Never again picking when I'm falling asleep. I will win back to back cards and tout two iPad 2s! /sidegoals

... ;)

I'm not surprised Ellenberger a.) gassed out and b.) got flustered in a disadvantageous position. He's done that before. I have much love for the dude as a fighter (and person)—but he's shown that if he doesn't finish in the first two rounds then there is a chance the other fighter may takeover the fight (if they're good enough).

Kklems, the atmosphere was pretty stellar. One of the hottest crowds I've heard in the last few years. (SoCal also usually has good, smart fans.) I understand, tho, with the kids combined with it being on a weekday.

Simpson's uppercut was very nice. I wound up kicking myself for being swayed with my pick of Markes to Simpson.

New ref Jim Axtell inspired a lot of fun while watching the fights. He has the Bad Boy logo tattooed to the back of his head—and seemingly sized up Ivan Menjivar as though he were a Snickers bar.

Some random bit of news:

http://bjpenn.com/mmanews/?p=14467

Are you surprised: Nick Diaz thinks Diego Sanchez won and says Jake Ellenberger would be killed in a real fight.

EDIT: DANG IT ALL TO HECK, MAK. *shakes fist at the world*

Just saw an article on mmajunkie how Dana is giving a resounding 'no' to the idea of bringing Sylvia back:

"If you look at when Tim Sylvia was in the heavyweight division, I say it all the time: It's when we had the weakest heavyweight division in the company's history," he said. "Him and (Andrei) Arlovski were knocking each other out every weekend.

"I have no beef with Tim Sylvia or whatever. The guy's out there trying to make a living and doing what he's doing. But for him to make the claim that he could knock out 80 percent of the heavyweights in the UFC, what I just said before says it all."

Hey, Diaz did indeed grow up in the ghetto and is still involved in a pretty bad area. Stockton looks like a pretty bad place.

Aside from that though, I think he's just trying to make a case for coming forward and getting hit winning fights.

That's all well and good, but he could actually, ya know...set an example for kids who come from that area that you can rise above the hand you're dealt and do better for yourself. We've had this discussion before. The guy's only a millionaire. Instead of thinking that the entire world is out to get him, you'd think at some point he might feel a little blessed to be where he is...rather than where he could be (ie. prison, dead, etc.). I really don't know that I've ever seen another athlete so oblivious to the gift that he's been given. He gets a chance to fight for one of the top belts in the top MMA organization in the world...and he acts like it's a hassle. It just blows my mind.

Interesting stuff, Kklems. I had no idea.

I sorta went off on a few hotheaded sprees in regards to the hot garbage most Nick Diaz fans were saying after his fight with Carlos Condit. However, I do like Nick Diaz. I relate with the dude. I have seen him dedicate time to fans at signings and make time for fans. Plus, his is my cardio inspiration. My goal is Nick Diaz cardio.

But yeah, what he said is complete trash. And his logic can be completely ridiculous and irrational. He has been unprofessional with a total "fuck everything" attitude—which admittedly is a part of his appeal. He is not a dude playing a bad boy gimmick. He sincerely does not give a fuck.

Again: In interviews and from people who know him on a personal level, it seems like Nick Diaz does not like to fight and simply does it because it pays the bills. He's just an exceptional athlete who happens to be very good at various elements of fighting. If doing triathlons could pay him $200,000 a year, he'd never fight again.

Quick run down of stuff I have seen on Twitter this week that hasn't made it to the CAG thread.

Some more info not in the thread:

Attendance for Omaha fuel 6300 down from 9100 the last time an event came to Omaha. Gate receipts were 400k.

Also UFC 144 Ppv is 7 fights instead of the usual 5 but has the same starting time. Not sure if the price is the same but I would guess it is. They will still have a Facebook fight and 3-4 prelims as well.

Re: nick diaz that was interesting about his not wanting to fight. Where did the triatholon reference come from? Because elite triatheletes can earn millions between purses and endorsements. Chrissie wellington, One of the sports most dominant and an amazing athlete has made over 4 million in the last 4 years. Also I wonder if ghetto boy could swim with the big boys.

I gotta say: The UFC should make Omaha one of the main places to hold shows. The people there love MMA and the crowd really helped hype the fights. Great atmosphere.

Very interesting factoid about triathletes. I'll have to add that to my data bank. I wonder if Nick Diaz could hang with the elite—or even knows of the earning potential.

Good stuff.

I'm sure he'd be mediocre, just like he'd be a mediocre pro boxer. Anything that would require actual work on his part to get beyond his natural abilities and compete with the elite of the sport would be his downfall.

What actually come out my mouth as I read this: "Hehehe..."

To be honest, I'm inclined to agree. Nick Diaz is lucky that he's such a fantastic athlete with natural gifts. Otherwise, he would be like Rich Franklin and Diego Sanchez. Very good fighters who have become gatekeepers because the sport's evolution has passed them by. (And I like Franklin and Sanchez.)

I'm actually intrigued with the idea of Diaz giving up MMA, even if temporarily, and trying his hand at pro boxing. I think he'd beat low-tier guys—but would have a difficult time getting past middle-tier boxers. Diaz has good MMA boxing but pretty awkward boxing for pro boxing.

With that sort of payrate, I wonder why Diaz really hasn't competed in triathlons if his heart truly isn't into MMA. I imagine his preference to coast on his natural abilities would keep him out of the elite like Chase said. Also his general outspokenness would scare away the sponsorships he would need to be competitive. I'm fairly sure the people that support triathlete organizations would be less inclined than MMA to welcome someone that would openly rail against the sport, governing bodies and competitors like Diaz could.

I am so fucking jacked for UFC 144 this Saturday! Bendo and Rampage are two of my favorite fighters so them on the same card serving as the main and co main event is fucking awesome!

Benson Henderson is my favorite lightweight so I can't wait until he steps toe 2 toe with Frankie Edgar! Both have excellent cardio for days so its going to be an all out war! I'm confident that Benson Henderson has what it takes to dethrone the answer become the new UFC Lightweight champion.

Bader better watch out because here comes the Rampage!!! If Rampage ever want a title shot again, he needs to win this fight and I think he will.

i'm interested to see how ufc runs in saitama. if i had more time to plan and such i would have attended it live.

i'm going to pick:

Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Ben Henderson
Light Heavyweight bout: Quinton Jackson vs. Ryan Bader
Heavyweight bout: Mark Hunt vs. Cheick Kongo
Welterweight bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields
Middleweight bout: Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch
Featherweight bout: Hatsu Hioki vs. Palaszewski
Lightweight bout: Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon

This should be one of the better cards of the year. :) It'll be interesting to see if Henderson can secure a takedown and keep Edgar on the ground.

I did my homework and have most of my picks set-up. I'll get around to finalizing them by tomorrow. Definitely interested to see everyone's picks.

- Dan Hardy-Duane Ludwig has been added to UFC 146. Hardy rides four straight losses. His last: a submission loss in Chris Lytle's retirement fight. Following the Loser-Loser matchmaking, Ludwig walks into the octagon following his submission loss to Josh Neer.

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/2/22/2817131/duane-bang-ludwig-to-meet-dan-hardy-at-ufc-146

- Two more fights signed for UFC 146. Gabriel Gonzaga welcomes Strikeforce's Shane del Rosario to the UFC and, Brazilian prospect, Glover Teixeira faces Kyle Kingsbury in his UFC debut. Undefeated with 11 wins, del Rosario last fought in February 2011 securing a win over Lavar Johnson by R1 armbar. In his return fight to the UFC, Gonzaga looked impressive, handing Ednaldo Oliveira his first loss. Brazilian prospect, Glover Teixeira, has accumulated a 15-fight win streak, last submitting Ricco Rodriguez with punches. Kingsbury last dropped a UD loss to Stephan Bonnar.

- Nate Marquardt is back under the Zuffa umbrella, signing a contract with Strikeforce. Marquardt had been scheduled to make his welterweight debut against Rick Story in the UFC Live 4 main event—but the PSAC barred him from competing due to testosterone levels higher than the allowable limit. Dana White followed up the the lost main event by announcing that the UFC had cut Marquadt. Marquardt's first fight is rumored to be against, undefeated welterweight, Tyron Woodley.

Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Ben Henderson
Light Heavyweight bout: Quinton Jackson vs. Ryan Bader
Heavyweight bout: Mark Hunt vs. Cheick Kongo
Welterweight bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields
Middleweight bout: Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch
Featherweight bout: Hatsu Hioki vs. Palaszewski
Lightweight bout: Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon

I imagine Hardy's cut if he loses to Bang. Granted there's a Fight of the Night in those 4 straight losses, but it's a tough sell to keep your spot without a win in 2 years.

I like hardy, everything Ive read about fan's interactions with him have been glowingly positive and my personal experience with him was great. Im a fan of his for life.

Hes fun to watch fight regardless if hes lost a number in a row, although a guy cant keep losing and remain in the ufc regardless of how entertaining a fighter he may be.

I like Dan Hardy as a fighter and person. Dude is very friendly and nice. And sometimes? Pretty darn funny. But, I wouldn't keep him in the UFC if he adds another loss to his record. If he drops one to Ludwig, I'd send him to Strikeforce.

They now have Marquardt. You have High, Daley, and Woodley at the top of the 170 foodchain. Mein, Saffiedine, and Voelker as prospects. I think Bellator has a deeper 170, but for a company who has had their top 170 guys plucked by the UFC, Strikeforce's division is decent.

If Zuffa could figure out the contracts, they could easily fortify Strikeforce's welterweight division by sending over some people who would find more success in the sister promotion, like Matt Brown, DaMarques Johnson, Matt Riddle (who should be straight-up cut), Ricardo Funch, and Amir Sadollah.

Add it all up, and that's actually an impressive division. Don't renew the contracts of Bowling, Smith, and Santos, and they'd have a solid 17 fighters and another division to showcase outside of 155 and the female bantamweights.

Saw that on Amazon, won't be but two more months before you can find it for 20 bucks haha.

On an MMA related note, Marquardt/Woodley will be a great fight. Great test for Woodley, and an interesting first fight for Marquardt at welterweight.

Interesting picks, Krakrabbit and Zewone. I locked a few dogs. Should be interesting to see what occurs. :)

Weigh-In notes:

- Yoshihiro Akiyama looks great at 170; weighing in at 169.

- Mark Hunt is 7-7 going into his fight with Cheick Kongo. There are some dudes with mediocre records in the UFC, like Jason Young, Steve Cantwell, and Alex Caceres. But, if Hunt loses, he'll be the—only—fighter in the UFC with a losing record.

- Quinton Jackson weighed-in at 211. Six pounds overweight. Rampage says an injury is the reason for missing weight. This is the first time the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion has missed weight in his career.
