Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

that kotaku video of the AR looks awesome and unlike anything else I've played. i am starting to really get excited to have the 3ds in my hands.

What launch games is everyone picking up? I think I'll get pilot wings but I'm not sold on any of the other games. Has any place reviewed the import version of the games? 40 bucks is a bit much for portable games and I hate paying full MSRP for anything thanks to CAG.
im getting pilotwings, the 2 reviews I found havent been great but I loved the original.

PilotWings for me (if I get it). I loved the original too.

Wish there was more stuff like that that FEELS like it's real although I'm told it's not at all, which makes me sad

Reading that first review, it's disappointing it only takes place on one island...I wasn't a huge fan of Pilotwings 64, and thought IT was too small, and it's apparently huge by comparison.

Are those visuals real in the screenshots? They look way too high resolution, too big on my 1080p monitor. Nice though.

Other than that? Eh....nothing really. If you forced me to get something else, I guess I'd do Street Fighter, but I'd probably sooner finally buy a copy of Alpha 3 for the PSP, 'cause I'm not fond of the visuals (which are obviously cut way down here) and it sounds like the game's overly complex compared to earlier ones.

Oh...and maybe Nintendogs Poodle, just 'cause, but...
I need to go to a Best Buy and see the demo station of the 3DS. All these comments about how ugly the blue one is has me concerned. If I don't like it, I want a black DSi, but can Amazon really still have some available?
Definitely do so, but I mentioned in the other thread that I felt the blue one looked A LOT better in person than the online pics I've seen. It's a deeper aqua blue than I thought it was going to be and the paint is sparkly like you see on cars when you look close.

I was able to play the demo unit tonight at BB. Lots of fun and I can definitely see how some people have mentioned your eyes are a bit jarred if you try to look down to the bottom screen when looking at 3d on the top screen. Overall I'm happy with it and will keep my pre-order but I will definitely be passing on Pilotwings.

Pilotwings and Steel Diver. Maybe, maybe Nintendogs but probably not.

But you didn't play any actual games? ...

Got to try this at PAX and I was impressed. When I heard that the screen resolution was a small upgrade from the DS I didn't expect much of a graphical upgrade - but RE Mercenaries was lookin' mighty fine. Steel Diver looked good but they only let you play the periscope mode. Kid Icarus was cool, I guess, but I don't need a full-priced Sin & Punishment. Skipped Ocarina as I'm going to be buying it day 1 anyway.

My friends seemed to have more trouble with the 3D than I did. I had the slider up to full the whole time, and very rarely got out of the sweet spot.

No, my impressions were of the actual system itself which is what I was most interested in.

Games are games. I already know what I like to play.
...When I heard that the screen resolution was a small upgrade from the DS I didn't expect much of a graphical upgrade
On paper it looks pretty comperable to the PSP, if clocked 25% slower, so it's a full generational leap past the DS.

Regarding Mercenaries, I still hope that PSP Resident Evil game is coming out (and at this point it could hit the 3DS too), but Mercenaries is a mode I spend a few minutes with in the real games...not something I"d spend money on :whistle2:/

Does anyone know if the analog nub will be "backwards compatible"? Maybe I can finally play my 7 year old copy of Super Mario 64 DS.
Does anyone know if the analog nub will be "backwards compatible"? Maybe I can finally play my 7 year old copy of Super Mario 64 DS.
Surprisingly I think I remember someone saying it actually was...that it functioned as a d-pad I guess in DS games? Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

That may not really make it any easier for that game though since of course it wouldn't be analog.

Regarding Mario 64...the control was worse, although I thought the changes they made to the gameplay made the game a bit better.

Hmm...I probably shouldn't have sold my copy... I'm not a huge fan, but if I'm keeping my DSs, it seems like something I should have....
I'm hoping for a DSi price drop so I can in turn wait for a cheaper 3DS down the road.
I'll have one for sale as soon as the transfer tool gets released ;-)

Hey, what screen protectors are you guys buying? I only put 'em on the bottom screen, but I do want one there. Wish they'd switch to capacitive or whatever like the NGP uses...

Need to pick out a case and screen protector if I'm doing this. Would like a spare AC adapter too.

Games...I guess PilotWings and Ridge Racer.

i played this at my local best buy today. the screen was blurry in my opinion. i did not know how to configure the 3d so whatever, i was in a rush so ill give it a try next time.
Haha I would probably be looking for a new one... is it blue by any chance?
Its the Black DSi. (two actually) but I shant buy a second 3ds until I can dispose of the DSis.

Went to Best Buy today for an interview and tried the demo version out at the Kiosk. I can see lawsuits coming out left and right when this thing releases. Has two disclaimers 1.No children under 7 should be playing this. 2. Do not play for longer then 20 minutes. I literally played for 5 and left with a slight headache. The 3D is ok at best in my opinion. I'm definitely waiting for a black friday deal on this thing. I think I'd play it mostly on the 2D setting.

That's just what I expected :whistle2:/

Did you try it in 2D mode? I'm curious now whether it REALLY functions like that... It's funny, "3D" on the 3DS may stop me from buying it, and a sealed battery is the only thing stopping me from an NGP.

Yeah I played it on 2D as well. 2D looks great but I'm not gonna pay $250 for a fancier Dsi. The 3D had me squinting at the screen to get a good representation of it. Before anyone says you had to lift it up off the Kiosk I did so. It's definitely a purchase to wait on. By Black Friday there should be some good bundle deals going on or a nice price drop for the day. Not to mention the shopping channel should have a good amount of Gameboy games on it by then.

Well thanks, I appreciate the info, and what your saying is what I expected it to be like :whistle2:/

do you wear glasses? wondering if that can effect how well the 3d works. I wear glasses and hate 3d movies. i also could never see those images with hidden pictures in them like the boss from senfield. I'm not really buying the 3ds for the 3d anyways though. I personally would be surprised to see any significant deals this black friday. it would the the 3ds first holiday season and i'm sure there will be plenty of demand.

I'm betting the 3ds will make me sick. I'm really sensitive to light, especially florescent and those low energy bulbs. both can give me migrains. i also get car sick easy if I read in a car. I bet whatever causes those two things will some how relate to whatever makes people sick looking at the 3ds.

Finally tried it out today, very disappointed.

First of all, I could see the 3D instantly, and thought it was cool, but very understated. It just didn't have as much depth as I assumed it would have. My "sweet spot" for SFIV and Faceraiders was pretty much at max, and for Pilot Wings was about 3/4 of the way.

Went with a buddy, and he didn't much care for it. He had a bit of trouble seeing the 3D at all, and his sweet spot was at about 1/4 of the way up. I think he summed it up best when he said it was almost like a Magic Eye or those "holographic" stickers you used to see all the time as a kid: "3D" but only just.

For those wondering, I do wear glasses and it wasn't an issue at all for me (I was actually concerned my astigmatism correction might have made it tough, but no issues).

I honestly felt SFIV was the only game worth getting out of trying that, Steel Diver, and Pilot Wings as both Steel Diver and Pilot Wings felt very slow and shallow experiences. Sadly I already have SSFIV on 360 with a stick, so I don't see myself playing it with the more cumbersome 3DS controls.

Over all, not bad, but it definitely doesn't have the killer app it needs yet, the 3D effect wasn't as impressive as I was expecting, and I just can't justify the money with it at this time, so I'm canceling my preorder.

(oh, and I thought the "aqua blue" one was ugly as hell and more of a teal, just way too much green in it. It looked like an old Gameboy Pocket Color)

Any of you know if Nintendo is making the 3D a requirement or is that optional. I would love to see how good games can look like if 3D is taken out of the picture entirely.

This could be a selling point for some games after the novelty of 3D wears out. Look at how good our game looks over every other 3D games on the system

You can switch the 3D on of off.... It's not required to play any of the games as far as I know.

Yeah, but I think s/he meant like how games can look if they don't have "3D" at all, since the system then has double the fill rate. Its fill rate is lower than the PSP by 25%, but also the screen resolution is lower too...except its higher with "3D" turned on, so games should be able to look better if they just skip "3D" entirely.

I'd still like to know if it's REALLY like a normal LCD when off though.
You can switch the 3D on of off.... It's not required to play any of the games as far as I know.
Yes I am already aware of that but what I meant was, won't games look much better if they didn't had to include the 3D feature at all in the game. At the moment games are using the same game engine either 3D is on or not. What if they created the game engine that took full advantage of the system without 3D.

Edit: Dang, Wolfpup beat me to the reply

Ah I see now and I can see your concern. As far as Pilotwings went it looked great in 2D mode. Maybe game designers will take the feedback people give on launch that we want both styles to look great. I really think this is gonna flop when more people get their hands on it.

I'd honestly love a 3DS with no "3D", and a 4.3 or larger screen :)

When I tried on 2D mode, the screen looked a bit different still, so I doubt it's the exact same as an LCD on 2D mode. It's hard to explain, but it's almost similar to seeing scan lines on DVDs.

I'm surprised how much trouble people have with the 3D though. I had a huge sweet spot when I tried it, and like a cubic foot's movement range. I could never see the magic eye images either, and I wear glasses, just in case anyone's wondering.

I don't mind the price, the color, or anything, but I really really really am fearful that it will cause my eyes to get messed up from use, even in 2D mode.

Thanks for the info.

Dang, I guess these don't ship until the 30th? If so, I've got next week to try to see one in store and make up my mind. If I skip this it'll be only the second Nintendo system I skip, and for the same reason

(Hmm, guess which Nintendo system I've previously skipped? ;) )
My guess is going to the Original DS.
No no, I thought this was too obvious but I guess not. I bought a DS on launch with The Urbs (?) and Mario 64 and...probably something else. No the only other Nintendo system I didn't buy was the Virtual Boy, because of the 3D.
I'm surprised Amazon is still taking preorders. I hope I don't regret canceling my order of the aqua blue unit to place a new order for a black one.
I used the contact e-mail thing to try to get an answer, and this was it:

Hello,

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding regarding this item. Although we do have your copy of "Nintendo 3DS - Cosmo Black " on hand, we can't ship it to you until its official release date, March 27, 2011. Many manufacturers, publishers, and record labels restrict retailers from selling or shipping their products until the official release date.

In some cases, these items may enter the shipping process just prior to the release date. When possible, we do this to ensure that you get the item as soon as possible after the release date. We still expect this item to be delivered to you by the Estimated Delivery Date listed in Your Account: March 30, 2011.

As per our standard policy, we do not charge you for items until they enter the shipping process. When your order is shipped, we'll send you an e-mail message to let you know it's on the way.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thank you for your recent inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

Amazon.com

It kind of sounds like they didn't really read or comprehend what I was asking, but they say they have it in stock, so I guess they're still able to fill pre-orders to this date.

Tried it at a Best Buy, but it only had Pilotwings, so I'll have to find another place to try it out at.

I honestly felt like the screen was too small for the 3D tech that system and/or game was pushing. I could never find a sweet spot near the top of the slider switch. For Pilotwings the spot was near the bottom.

Tried it again today, screen in 2D looked nice and sharp to me.
Looked very good actually.

I'll probably try it a few more time, I'll take a closer look next time.

Tip: To get it out of the Pilotwings demo, hold L R Start Select and hit Power.
You can then get to the Home menu, try the AR games, camera, etc.

I also tried it at Best Buy. I liked it, The analog felt nice and smooth. the buttons and dpad felt nice and firm. I too had trouble seeing the 3-D but seriously, i think its just my eyes not being used to it. My eyes were working overtime to focus on Pilot Wings. I feel like if i play this enough, my eyes will get use to it.

still a day 1 purchase for me since it will be able to play my DS games too.

This is a review of the system itself.

My U.S. 3DS review unit + 4 games arrived.

But bittersweetly, I agreed to have it featured on Revision3's Unboxing Porn video series. So seeing the contents will have to wait until tomorrow night.

Take a close up pic of the box, I want to see the address! >_<

EDIT: I need help, I have both pre-ordered on Amazon and I don't know which color to get, atm I am leaning more towards blue.

Yes, of course there is no requirement to make the games use 3d.
They say 10-12% of people can't see stereoscopic 3D properly or at all.
Definitely will be a personal thing.
And more than that either don't like it or get headaches or weird eye issues, etc. I'm baffled by this push for "3D" by the CE companies :whistle2:/

Honestly I'll be surprised if that's the case, but it would be cool if true. This seems like something Nintendo would enforce since it's being pushed as the main thing of the system.

Man I miss the days a generation ago when the big deal about new hardware was better/bigger screens and drastically more power.

Consider your desire for bigger/better alongside the push for 3D. We're at a place where bigger/better isn't feasible, economic, or appreciable. 3D is easy to see and appreciate in the way that HD was when held against SD. So that's what they're selling.
