Are there any people from Japan in this thread? I would imagine that it's a cultural thing too. I bet Japan has a whole lot of people walking around with a 3DS. I think that most people in the US play theirs at home. I also think that younger people only turn them on when they're gonna play. Only hard core gamers care about street pass. At least in my area 4 out 5 tags I get have Fire Emblem which your average 3DS owner has probably never heard of.
It is a cultural thing, 90% of DS owners in the USA put in a game and play it. I actually think an adult would be more interested in the streetpass features as they have the means and know how to know how to use it. Nintendo needs to make an effort to set up special streetpass events at big malls in the USA in order to encourage people to use it. The demo units would be a good start as streetpass stations (if they advertised and set them up as such), so those who need passes could at least get them from the demo units, but I find the demo units to be hit or miss. Perhaps set up demo units with a Mii that has all the puzzles opened and all the pink pieces. There are some places in the USA where its completely dead for streetpasses but chances are those people could get to a store where a demo unit is located.
I think a lot of kids have streetpass turned on, however how much they are playing in public is beyond me. I find a lot of kids just hold the systems in their hands, and don't actually play in public, odd but true. I do think some stash it in their parents stroller or bag or something perhaps. I have gotten passes in malls and i have not seen anyone visibly playing a 3DS system, so it must be coming from somewhere stashed. I am very alert to these things too.
Out of my 26 streetpasses only one is a female. It is extremely hard to get a female here.
I find this odd, as I am a girl and I think its really easy to just stash your 3DS in your purse and walk around with it then check it when you get home. This would be much easier than a male who would have to either put it in a backpack or some kind of bag or pocket, and the pocket is really impractical for a system like the 3DS most of the time.
I don't think theme parks would be a hotspot, hotels would probably be really hot for 3DS streetpasses, with theme parks as you say there is possibility of the system getting lost or damaged easily though many kids again travel with parents who are pushing a stroller or wagon so there is somewhere to stash stuff while going on rides. So seeing people get passes at the park is kind of surprising but I will try it this summer, though I can say when I am at a park the last thing my mind is on is my 3DS.
