I liked Dead Cells a lot, but I would say there's not too much in common outside of some of the core tenants of roguelites. With Dead Cells, a lot of it is built around random drops and perks that you get throughout a run along with forks to take different routes to different areas as you slowly build up your character from the blueprints and upgrades you unlock that persist between runs.

With Sparklite, the only thing that changes between runs is the layout of the world. I'd probably put it more in the vein of a Rogue Legacy meats A Link to the Past since no matter how poor a run can go, you're making progress by collecting Sparklite as a currency to spend on upgrades, patches, items, and upgrading shops in the base. As you explore the world, you can find certain dungeons that give you patches, which are installed in the base to give you stat boosts (hearts, damage increase, defense increase, and more energy for your tools). During the run, you can pick up widgets, which are useful items that you loose when you die that can do things like restore health or energy or be one of a variety of explosives. The core framework is beating the Titan boss of each area as they unlock with you needing to beat all four to open up access to what I'm assuming is the final boss. You can spend runs going for the next Titan boss that's available or grinding for Sparklite and side dungeons to get more patches or blueprints for new tools. To be clear, the dungeons aren't super involved like Zelda dungeons, as they're more like a series of small rooms with some combat, simple switch puzzles, or other small things like that. The bosses and the unlocks are more of the core goals of the game.
Dead Cells was my first "rogue" game ever, and I was a huge fan. I ended up drunk purchasing Sparklite last night right before I packed my Switch.

And I am super glad I did. I purchased The Messenger too and was like whatever let me have 2 games to play on my flights.

I started with Sparklite on my first leg that was like 2 hours long, and I played it for like 90 minutes. I didn't want to put it down. It has that damn addictive feel that I got with Dead Cells where I kept wanting to just get the next upgrade and see what is next, but it just feels a little different. LIke it feels less hardcore or something. I don't know how to explain it.

I then played The Messenger for the last 30 or so minutes and really enjoyed that too.

On my 2nd leg it was like an 80 minute flight. I played The Messenger for the first 20 minutes but kept thinking bout the next thing in Sparklite so I put that on and played it until I landed. And damn it's just fun.

I don't even know how to really explain the type of game to someone. But it's just fun and makes me want to keep playing to get the next upgrade and progress. But the progression (so far at least) feels not nearly as grindy as Dead Cells did.

My only gripe with the game would be the controls. I kind of wish even with the analog you were only tied to 8 directions like the dpad. I have definitely messed up due to the controls being a little loose, multiple times. The frame drops don't even bother me really at all either.

I do recommend the game though.

I know that “spend $60 on a game two weeks before Black Friday” is not going to be a popular opinion, but if you were inclined to get Groove Coaster I can tell you it’s absolutely worth it.

A 5 minute run of playing the tutorial and checking the tracks just turned into 3 hours of clearing songs and missions one after the other, and there’s so much more I haven’t touched. Also, having the HD Rumble kick in for every correct note is so incredibly satisfying.

Just the fact that every track has a unique set of visuals (unlike Taiko, which was a bummer) make those $15 DLC packs not look that bad all of a sudden...

As if I wasn't already on board.

It's nice to see Rogue Legacy get a lot more mention these days after games like Dead Cells get popular. When I first played Rogue Legacy back in 2013, it was like no one else cared about it, but I freaking loved it. I just miss the early build where IBS characters farted on every double jump.

How many tracks in the base game?

*EDIT*

Looks like 100. I might have to bite. I might also hate you if it sucks, but I'm a sucker for rhythm games... so...

*EDIT x2*

Bought it. Ugh... couldn't resist.

I’m not saying I played Groove Coaster for 2 hours straight.

I am saying I played it for 1 hour 57 minutes straight.

Lord help me.

TATE mode is so awesome. Just make sure you change the screen aspect ratio to 9:16 in the options or it won’t actually fill the screen.

Yeah, I had issues at first with the Boom Balloon where I thought I stopped while facing the right way at one of the Sparklite rocks to blow it up only to see it going the wrong way to waste the energy for that bit of time. The blue patches you get from the furnaces are really helpful to [customspoiler='In case you want to keep them a secret']add stuff to the map to track the important stuff and the one you get to reveal the Vinelands map makes it so much easier to get to the next area when you mess up.[/customspoiler] The ones the girl in the medical shop sells are also very useful, though once you upgrade the medical shop to be able to merge the health patches and expand that space are vital to really getting the game to work in your favor really nicely. The widget guy's upgrades are nice to increase the options for what you start with since the health or revive widgets can be vital to keeping you going when getting to the Titan fight.

I bought all the DLC, too, now. Ugh... $124 on a game. So addicted and the level design is amaaaaazing.

I feel you and then some on this, but I would say for me, those titles fell out of love with what made them great, which in turn led me to lose interest. I gave up on 2D Mario after the DS game, as each of those titles has been pretty much the same since. I played Odyssey to the end, but didn't bother to finish it, as I had to force myself to keep coming back, and by the end, I just no longer cared. The game had some decent moments, but for me, Galaxy 1 & 2 are the high water mark for 3D Mario(Mario64 gets an honorable mention), and Odyssey missed the mark and then some for me.

As for BotW, I played to the first major dungeon(the elephant one), and after that, I realized this game wasn't "Zelda", at least none I had ever known, and stopped playing that title as well. I understand why so many may have liked it, but everything that made it "open air" or whatever label "N" put on it, killed any fun for me. Having weapons break, and fighting the same group of bad guys over and over was just boring, at least to me. The world while massive in size, lacked the focus of past Zelda titles, which led me to get bored each time I played.

So while I haven't sworn off all 1st party titles, I do find way more to like looking to those trying to make their mark, as it's do or die for them, so I feel I'm getting 110%, than whatever flight of fancy I get from "N" most days.
Thanks for the explanations about what to expect from those games. But to be clear, it's not that I hate Mario or Zelda, but I just can't see myself spending $40 to $60 on a title anymore even in a franchise that I know that I will probably enjoy. Walmart will have Breath of the Wild for $30 on Black Friday. Target will have Mario Odyssey and Mario Tennis Aces on Black Friday for $30. Those are good deals for Nintendo first-party titles.

But I have such a huge backlog, I work a lot of overtime, and I'm getting older. That means that I have less time to play, and that I'm tired most of the time so I can't stay up until the crack of dawn playing video games because I need my rest. When I sit down to play, I tend to play shorter games (rogue-likes mostly) that don't take up much of my time. And, in all honesty, the games that I bought last Black Friday for my other systems are still sitting unopened. I needed a Switch like I needed a hole in my head. But it will probably be the last system that I'll ever buy since I'll be cutting back on my gaming purchases starting next year.

Anyway, I like the Switch so far because of the ease of use. Jump into a game, jump out quickly if you want. I played Tallowmere for a half hour yesterday. It's a good game on its own, but great on the Switch. And Crypt of the Necrodancer for 15 minutes or so. That was enough. I had fun, and that's what counts.

Yep, this is the main reason why I've been a portable gamer pretty much since I started working, as the time was less, and the demands became more. And once I had a kid, forget about it. LOL

I haven't touch my consoles in any meaningful way in years, and if not for my son wanting to try a game now and then, they would never even get turned on. Hell, I even skipped this gen, as I was looking to get a PS4 a few holidays back, and the need never became great enough for me to make the buy. I'll still probably get a PS4 or 5 at some point, just for the Sony exclusives, but I'll do that once it can be had cheap, and the AAA games are $20 and under.

I'm really looking forward to grabbing a Lite, as many of the games I wanted for the Vita got moved to the NS(as have most PS4 games), so there's already a decent amount of games I want. And since most have been around awhile already, getting them on discount should be easy peasy.

Is there a list of games that work with this grip? I hear you guys talking about it all the time yet I don't think I own a single thing that would use it.

Here’s one from the creators, but it hasn’t been updated in a while: https://retronauts.com/article/946/the-comprehensive-list-of-flip-grip-friendly-vertical-games-for-switch

Here’s another, might be off in places: https://switcher.co/features/vertical-flip-grip-switch-games/
(for example, both Pinball Arcade titles listed flip the opposite way, so they don’t work quite right)

The grip itself you can get from Fangamer ($12+shipping), and in a limited bundle with a physical copy of Downwell from Special Reserve Games ($30+shipping, special red variant).

Have you figured out how to get a “Perfect” in any song? It’s mission 87, and I don’t get it.... I literally got Greats on every note on a track and didn’t get a Perfect.

PS You’re in for a treat with the FlipGrip.

EDIT:

SECRET AD LIBS!!

All this talk about Groove Coaster really makes me wish I was physically incapable of playing rhythm games. Thumper is the only game I've ever been able to be half-way good at (and I wouldn't really consider that a classical rhythm game either)

Groove Coaster is the most accessible rhythm game I’ve played in years. I think you’d really like it. Way more accessible than Thumper (and a better game, too). Not that Thumper was hard to get into, but Groove Coaster is AAA rhythm awesomeness.

I'll have to check some gameplay on this version of _Groove Coaster_! My physical inability is when I have to be ready to press more than 4 buttons at any moment. Basically my mind can handle 4 face button presses, but if there's more to it than that then I just completely lose it and fail out. I love, love, love the idea of them, just can't get my mind and my fingers to work together to nail the button prompts. Long presses really do a number on me, too. If there's like a kids/easy mode where I can play it through the entire game, then I'd really be down to give it a try (though I'd wait for a future sale, as I'd still be worried that the $60 purchase would be lost on my lack of abilities).

You don't need to press that many buttons in one go. I've only seen two, really. I've now spent $124 on this game. Jeez...

The Tokyo RPG Factory games don't go on sell often in general, and even then the prices are never that amazing. Took I am Setsuna 3 years to finally drop below $20 on PSN.

Yeah expect 50% off like once or twice and you better pick them up if you want that sale.

I also bought Sparklite myself, but I'm not enjoying it as much as the others. The controls feel a bit looser than I like and it's already feeling very repetitive and I've only played for about 3 hours. It does have a lot going on and a lot to unlock, but it seems to be missing the hook for me. I will give it another hour or 2, but I maybe giving it up by then. Not bad of course, and the graphics are really nice, but I just am not that crazy about the gameplay itself.

Gave Sparklite another chance. I'll finish the game at least, but I'm not super impressed. I still mess up the controls and a gadget or two are uncontrollable pretty much so I rarely use them. I'd recommend waiting for a strong sale, but the game is decent enough. Slowdown is kind of weird at times too handheld, though it usually isn't killing runs.

Managed to beat Sparklite and it's such a good game. Still playing it to work towards the Platinum on PS4.
Agree on Sparklite with Frisky. Weirdest thing to hear is control problems since I experience none of that but I must add that I use the Split Pad Pro so I'm using the d-pad and not the stick. Always in handheld and no slowdown or input problems so don't know what the issue is. I should add that I beat Bloodstained twice before any patches and didn't notice input issues on that either. It did slow down a bunch though.

Some of the upcoming EU eShop deals have been revealed:

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/11/grab_a_bargain_in_the_switch_eshop_cyber_deals_sale_starting_this_friday_europe

Mario Odyssey - 30% off

Breath of the Wild - 30% off

Cadence of Hyrule - 30% off

NSMBU Deluxe - 30% off

DQ Builders 2 - 30% off

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - 30% off

FIFA 20 - 30% off

Dark Souls Remastered - 40% off

Dragon Ball FighterZ - 70% off

Wolfenstein Youngblood Deluxe - 50% off

Monster Hunter GU - 50% off

Historically, what are the odds that the NA eShop will follow suit on some of these?  I might jump at Cadence for that price, but it wasn't included in the NA preview.

NA deals are not usually as good as EU.

Nintendo of Europe tweeted about their upcoming Cyber Deals starting this Friday, Nov 22nd, so hopefully Nintendo of America follow suit! I've been waiting for a digital discount on Breath of the Wild, so I have my fingers crossed (I have a terrible habit of trading in my physical copies of BotW to GameStop, I think I've done it at least 6 times over the years).

Oops, I hadn't refreshed my tab in an hour when I wrote the above, so I hadn't seen that this was already made known here!

Nintendo is advertising Breath Of The Wild for US at $39.99 - if retail is $59.99, that would be a 30% discount.

I guess I should have posted the NA link while I was at it, since it's been previewed as well:

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/11/nintendo_reveals_its_best_black_friday_deals_for_2019_north_america

$20 discount on:

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Party

Breath of the Wild (lucky you!)

Splatoon 2

DKC Tropical Freeze

Mario Tennis Aces

Kirby Star Allies

Octopath Traveller

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

JoyCon pairs (grey or red/blue)

As well as $30 off the Poke Ball Plus accessory.

So the joycons most likely to have not been fixed for drifting....not sure that's a deal LoL

Also, apparently you need the Poke Ball Plus to get Mew in Sword/Shield. So guess some kids might want it. But even as a person that owns an imported Mew DS, not gonna bite.

How easy/difficult is it to purchase from another region and access the purchase in my home region (NA)?  I've looking to get Dark Souls Remastered, which looks to be in the EU sale only.

It's very easy, Nintendo's support page even tells you how to do it. You just need $0 balance on the eShop account to change the region on your account page on Nintendo.com. The tough part is having a way to pay on the EU shop. You credit card might do it, or it may not. I don't think an US PayPal account will do local European purchases (only thing I know for sure US PayPal works with is Mexico and Canada). Otherwise, you could pay for eShop gift cards for the local currency (not sure what a good source for Europe would be...), but then you'd run into the pickle of needing to clear your European eShop account before it would let you move back to USA.
