You begin to see my disappointment with Nintendo. Honestly, the controllers are likely bluetooth with some connection point on the screen. They upgraded the processor. The dock is essentially an HDMI passthrough (I'd be curious if you could just hook it directly into the TV without the dock). And finally, (most importantly) a 3 hr battery life means I can't even take the thing with me to the work because it will die before I get home.

I don't get it.

So I will continue to sigh at the decisions Nintendo chooses to make and play Pokemon quietly on the 3DS in a corner somewhere.
Yeah, the novelty, gimmick, or innovation(depending on your point of view), is the controllers and for me they look like ass and not to fun to use. Of course I haven't tried them yet, and while they look fine attached to the unit, it doesn't look to comfortable detached from the unit.

I've been gaming a very long time, and almost every scenario they presented in their video for the detached controller uses, I can never see myself using. They will probably be attach 95% of the time. I'm sure from their stand point, it's like the NES classic, as what is the most desirable item besides the unit, the extra controller of course.

Every other flashback style console like the NES Classic includes a second player controller, if there are 2 player games on the system, it's one and done and everything you need is included. Not "N", they are charging a premium price on the system, and then charging you for the extra pad for those few extra dollars. And on top of it all, they can't even make enough to sale to those who want it. So around and around it goes.

I guess it's also like the 3DS now, how they sale you a system that requires "charging", and then doesn't include a way to charge it outside of the box. I don't know of a single handheld electronic device that needs to be charged(gaming, smart phone, laptop, etc), and doesn't include a way to do it within the box at purchase. Be it an AC adapter, cheap USB cable, hell even a solar charger would be something, but nothing.

So yeah, your not alone in your disappointment of this company, as I don't even mind them ripping off fans and consumers in general, as I understand they have become rather "desperate" in recent years, but if your going to be a criminal, and rip off consumers, be a good one, and at least supply enough of your would be items to meet the demand, otherwise your not making the extra funds your scamming for in the first place. Then your just looking bad on all levels instead of just a few, when those already "victimized" fans, are now paying an added premium to even get the already questionable device.

As for the Switch just being the WiiU controller... or a glorified tablet... or whatever... at the end of the day, you could say the same thing about the PS Vita... it's just a glorified cellphone with controls attached.  And really looking deep into the hardware you'd find that to be a fair comparison of the components.  But the components aren't the operating system or software.

I think the main thing I'm hyped for is this new gaming reality where at least where Nintendo is concerned there is no line that separates handheld games from console games.   There are plenty of mistakes every system manufacturer makes.  Mistakes aren't unique to Nintendo.  It's amazing how many complaints I've heard (and waged) about Vita (and before that PSP) memory card prices.  Or how on PS4 converting from a physical copy of a game to digital requires the physical install be deleted and the new one downloaded.  Or the lack of external storage options for Sony systems when even Nintendo has something.  Or the dreaded Red Ring of Death that plagued the 360.  Remember HD-DVD and lack of HDMI from MS? No one is perfect and Nintendo has been behind in many areas but they tend to make up for all of it with games.

So now we will have a generation from Nintendo where you don't get the watered down port of a game on the handheld.  You don't have to buy multiple systems to get everything Nintendo has to offer because certain games are only on handheld and certain ones are only on the console.  And multiplayer not being locked to a tv or requiring multiple systems is pretty huge.  I can't say yet how much I'll use it but I can imagine using it on trips and at home.

I just hope beyond all hope we at least get Advance Wars on this thing.   It's been too long.

Amazon even has a $5 digital eshop card in case you only have a few credits and don't want to spend much, if any at all, out of pocket.
Wow, I really had no idea. Went ahead and redeemed for a $5 card, since I was $1 shirt of the $10. A little spark in my day. Thank you!

Did somebody say "More Switch rumors! MOAR!"? No? Well, too bad!

- Launch lineup to include Super Mario Switch, Skyrim, and Splatoon.

- Super Mario Switch to have an open hub world like Mario 64 or Galaxy, as well as co-op.

- Skyrim, much like the PS4 version, will not support mods out of the gate.

- Splatoon will have new single-player content as well as a new 1v1 mode that can be played with two Switches where players can switch weapons at will. Nintendo will also continue the free DLC like the Wii U version.

- That rumor before about the extra bundle with a game packed in? Apparently, that game will be Splatoon.

- Mario Kart 8 Switch will include all the DLC from the Wii U version along with new tracks, characters, items, and a "new and improved" battle mode.

- The new Pokémon game for the Switch is apparently not Pokkén, but given that Game Freak didn't work on Pokkén, this doesn't rule out a port.

- Clarification: Since the Switch version of Breath of the Wild is going to be delayed, the Wii U version will be as well.

They gotta bundle Mario or Zelda with Nintendo Switch for me to get it. I did that with the NES (Mario), SNES (Mario), Gamecube (Zelda), and Wii U (Mario); I'm not breaking tradition and neither should Nintendo.

If the control doesn't handle well for me, then at least I can use a Pro controller. Otherwise, my portable fix will be with the 3DS (which I'll get during Black Friday. Thanks for the feedback on my previous question.)

- Splatoon will have new single-player content as well as a new 1v1 mode that can be played with two Switches where players can switch weapons at will. Nintendo will also continue the free DLC like the Wii U version.

- Mario Kart 8 Switch will include all the DLC from the Wii U version along with new tracks, characters, items, and a "new and improved" battle mode.
That's how they'll get me to rebuy games I already own. Especially a new battle mode.

Looking like another shitty Nintendo system launch. When was the last good one? 91?
I know it's the internet, but do you ever have anything positive to say?

I thought the Wii and Gamecube launches were decent - system launches are usually pretty mediocre.

I dunno, I won't forgive them for the 6 month drought of games on the DS Phat so I can understand people being mad at them for never EVER learning their mistakes.

The only issue I had with the Wii launch was calling to find a Wii. Even then though, I recall walking in and scooping one up at Gamestop. I think I got lucky but there's no way for me to PERSONALLY grade it unless it's royally screwed me over.

Yea, the NES and SNES launches had a much bigger lineup. Almost as if they launched 1-2 years after their Japanese counterparts so they had more time to develop games. OH WAIT.

Fun fact: The launch lineup for the Famicom was Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye. The Super Famicom only got Mario World and F-Zero.

Also, the Wii launched with 22 titles and the Wii U launched with 34.

And actually looking at console launch lineups since the turn of the century, 80% of the lineup consists of either sports games or ports. The PS4 and XBox One slightly broke that trend because their biggest games were "yearly installment" franchises like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed.

You wanna know what the big, killer app game the XBox and PS4 launched with that weren't ports or yearly - installment franchises? XBox had Dead Rising 4 and Ryse while Playstation 4 had Killzone. And even the other games released for the systems at launch that weren't straight ports or yearly installment franchises were also available on the PS3 and Xbox360.

Every now and again I fire up some NES emulation and holy crap I suck at older games

no save points and hard af I have no idea how I beat those games as a kid

it's like catching lizards I used to be able to literally fly over to them and snag them off rocks and wood now I couldn't catch one with traps and a good plan.

The SNES launch lineup had great games, but terrible quantity. F-Zero, Pilotwings and Super Mario World pack in. It took a couple weeks for a few more to come out, maybe a dozen by Christmas from the end of August. It was not some glorious avalanche of games. Even games that had been out for months took their own sweet time to get here. I remember waiting for Super Castlevania 4 and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts.

The N64 was even worse. Both launched around a year after the Japan version.

Actually, the N64 launched only 4 months after the Japanese version did. Europe got it a few months later and was able to get Shadows of the Empire, Turok, and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey on launch day.

Everybody thinks Luigi's Mansion was the only launch GameCube game, but it also launched with Rogue Squadron 2, Super Monkey Ball, and Wave Race: Blue Storm, in addition to all the sports titles and Crazy Taxi.

EDIT: More rumors have surfaced. In addition to Breath of the Wild, Mario Switch, and Splatoon; the Game Freak - developed Pokémon game, Mario Kart 8 Switch, Pikmin 4, and a new IP will all launch within the Switch's first 12 months.

Honestly, I'm not even sure I want to get in on this. I just got some when they did it a few days ago, plus I still have a decent amount of credit from loading up on the Family Dollar sale some time ago (it was earmarked for the new Yu-Gi-Oh and Monster Tale, so...).

And after owning the system for over five years, I have most of the games that I ever wanted to get.

what new yu gi oh and monster tail game?

Oh, I almost forgot. In that list of rumored Switch games in the first 12 months, one of the rumored games was a game being made by Retro Studios.

EDIT: Also, there's apparently a rumored game for the Switch which is so completely unbelievable and off the wall that a lot of sites aren't reporting it because it's so insane they can't report it.

Good luck with that Nintendo, we'll be lucky of get three of those titles in a year. Holiday, End of Fiscal Year and May will be filled past that I have no faith in modern day Nintendo meeting that ambitious of a release window. At least, not at the expense of quality. It's possibly MK9, Splatoon and Pikmin are quick cash-ins and feel more like WiiU expansions than a generational sequel. And I guess Game Freak on a console as well as a new IP could be varying levels of quality and not necessarily a AAA Nintendo title. Let's say my expectations are low considering the recent past, but maybe they have learned their lesson under Kimishima.

Splatoon and Mario Kart are very definitely going to be enhanced ports, not actual sequels. Them and Smash 4 are being talked about as platforms going into the Switch era, as in Nintendo will just update these games with new content and DLC rather than outright make new sequels. Splatoon I can see getting an actual sequel since there are new avenues you can go with the franchise, but given what we know about Mario Kart Switch and how much is in Smash 4, it would be very, very hard to make sequels that actually feel like step forwards for either franchise.

There's a new app on the 3DS today that's a new version of Swapnote called Swapdoodle. And yes, Nikki is back. Right now it's only in the UK, but hopefully it comes to the US.

It includes Art Academy-esque doodle lessons that allow you to draw Mario and Zelda characters on your letters.

Swapdoodle comes out today, according to the weekly eshop NOA PR release. It's free to play, with purchases for the art lessons, stationary, and pens. The more expensive ones give you more ink and let you store more doodles (3000 a piece).

Smash Bros. is stale, 4 was just a worse version of Brawl. So unless they're willing to revamp the gameplay, I'm not really interested either way (I know I'm in the minority though). But, I hate the idea of Mario Kart being a platform. So, is it the same game but they add new levels without tweaking or adding to gameplay? That's just lazy.

It's pretty obvious they're doing tweaks since we know you can hold two items again and it will feature an actual Battle Mode.

Like, what would you actually do to improve Mario Kart 8? Especially given how it is by far the best selling Wii U game.

Likewise, the only big addition they could do with Smash 5 is make an extensive single player campaign again a la Adventure Mode or Subspace Emissary. The game mechanics are almost perfect, the game balance is great, there are a lot of features, the attention to detail is amazing, and it looks spectacular. Plus, they made the physics more over the top and cartoony like Smash 64 instead of the uber-realisitic style of Melee and Brawl.

Also, Nintendo spent a fuck ton of money developing those two games and you bet your ass they'll get as much coin as they can out of it, especially if it means bolstering their first year of games.

It's not so much making a game better than MK8, then it is about making one different from it. I'd rather they keep coming up with new mechanics/gimmicks/items/characters and keep removing of some of the old ones so that each game has some unique hook or feel to it (i.e. how only Double Dash has the two person karts). My concern is that Mario Kart from now on, will just be a more polished and larger version of MK8 with the glider, underwater, and anti-grav mechanics permanently attached and the newer games will lose some of their personality.

It's more or less how I feel about SSB4. That it was an upgraded Brawl, and that Nintendo avoided any real changes for it. I'd prefer it if, instead of just adding to an already large roster, the developers cut characters, completely changed movesets, changed some of the mechanics or rules, dropped or replaced modes. I only had enough interest in SSB4 to complete the mission mode and buy Bayonetta, I can't imagine ever having enough motivation to beat Classic with every character (like I did with the last games) mostly because I think the roster became too large and it's too time consuming to get all trophies or complete the checklist.

There's a core audience who'll buy an NS just for SSB, whom Nintendo will keep developing for anyway and who want the games kept consistent from one to the next. No point in making changes that'll, at best, only make casual fans happy.

Err, it's the hardcover crowd that hates Smash 4 because it's a hybrid of Melee and Brawl instead of a straight copy of Melee. Casual fans freaking love Smash 4.

And there's a HUGE amount of difference in how characters play between Brawl and Smash 4. It's faster, more fluid, far better balanced, sharper, and all around better in every way.

Just got a WiiU yesterday and do any of you guys have HDD external enclosure suggestions?

Apologies for the broad cross-post, but ...

If you live in the Seattle metro area, check out the "20% off GameStop gift-card" promo at your local Bartell Drugs ... which also can be leveraged to XBL/Win10, PSN, Nintendo, or other "console currency" available from the GameStop website.  FYI, Steam Wallet credit is currently unavailable from GS's website, but you can still purchase physical Steam GC's from GameStop's B&M stores.

Details & coupon in the Northwest regional thread here: https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/359369-/

One more Switch rumor before every devolves into Poké-madness.

- Remember that bonkers game I was talking about earlier?
It's apparently a Mario RPG... featuring the Rabbids. The Rabbids invade the Mushroom Kingdom and Mario has to team up with some not-evil Rabbids to save his home. Aside from the Rabbids, Yoshi is one of the party members.

- Also, there will indeed be a Switch - exclusive mainline Pokémon game coming next holiday: Pokémon Stars. Apparently, the Pikipek shown in the initial Sun/Moon reveal trailer is an HD model from this game.

It apparently has a lot of backing behind it. LetsPlayVideoGames was the first to report on it, but other rumor leakers started reporting it and the news channel I get all these rumors from even corraborated it with their own sources and sat on it for a few days because they couldn't believe it themselves. We'll see.

Are those characters in the rumor still the draw they once were?  I mean, I'm guessing it's a Ubisoft developed game, but I would definitely be more interested in that rumored game if those characters weren't in it.

It's not a huge leap to predict the next Pokemon will be "Stars"... It seems like even if it comes to NS that it'll also still come out on the 3DS.  If it doesn't come out on 3DS though that will mark a massive boost in Switch sales.

I won't buy another Ubisoft game for any Nintendo with how they treated the Nintendo fans....
You mean by not supporting a great game on other systems, so they can make more Rayman games in the future, due to them deciding they didn't want to loose money by only releasing on a system that had little to no sales? Yeah, that's a good call to make.

I fixed that statement for you BTW.

As Rayman fans across many different platforms where able to enjoy a great game. Only a butt hurt "N" fan would not support Rayman on a "N" platform, a real Rayman fan would be happy to play a new game no matter where it was released.

I think the issue is less that Rayman Legends was released on other platforms (at least I hope it is), but rather that the (nearly?) completed Wii U version was delayed so that the other versions would be released at the same time.

I doubt that Rayman would have been a system seller for the Wii U, but I certainly bought the system with an eye on playing the planned exclusive. I'm used to non-first party exclusives being anything but, but I still don't really see why it had to be delayed.

I'm not angry that it got released on other platforms.  It should have.  It was a fantastic game.

I'm mad that a game that was already complete and sitting on the shelf, got shelved for a YEAR because the company (at the LAST MINUTE) decided to port it to other systems.  It very much was a shitty Ubisoft thing to do.  And their crappiness has only gotten worse.

For that matter, Ubisoft has been on my crap-list for ALL my systems and I won't buy'm anymore unless it's super discounted.

So everything "N" has done for Zelda: Breath of the Wild in regards to the Wii U and NS, and when it's all said and done, the Wii U version might even come out later than the NS version. So I doubt anyone complaining about not buying Rayman would do the same in this Zelda situation.

Thanks for point out the hypocrisy of "N" elite crowd. It's OK when "N" screws you over(thank you sir, may I have another), but not when a 3rd party does it.

Seems like every post you do in this thread is something negative about Nintendo. I never see you rant about anyone else in other threads. No one was even talking about Zelda or Nintendo but you had to got there.

I mean, I'll be annoyed by this if it's true. But I'm a little confused by how the rumored localization trouble would only be an issue with the Switch version and not both.

I still think that you're moving the goalposts here - I think there's a difference between a first party delaying a game in order to encourage sales of a new system versus a third party delaying a game so that it can be released on competing systems. I can see how Nintendo delaying the game at least makes business sense so that they don't cannibalize sales - I don't think the same is true in the Rayman Legends case (if anything, I'd think that that delay should actually lead to cannibalization).

Kinda funny since the Wii U version was the best selling version of the game on any console (Can't find PC sales figures). The only version to outsell it is the Playstation 4 version, and that was only in Europe.

That being said, the game only sold really well in Europe. Only the two XBox versions of the game sold worse in Europe than the highest platform sales in the US. The Wii U version had about 220K copies sold in the US compared to 180K and 200K on the One & 360 respectively in Europe. All told, Rayman Legends sold about 3 million copies across all platforms, with over half of those sales from Europe.

Even if you want to say the ports killed hype for the game, it's a different beast than Breath of the Wild. Rayman Legends was originally a Nintendo exclusive that got ported to competing consoles while the system was still Nintendo's focus. Breath of the Wild is staying on Nintendo consoles and was going to be released so late in the system's life cycle (I'm certain it would have been released in 2017 even without the Switch) that most fans wanted it on the new console anyway and have accepted that the Wii U is dead. Completely different circumstances.

Thanks all for reminding me I haven't played Rayman Legends in a while, such a great game. (Still don't have 1mill lums, though...)

All I did was point out how silly it was to boycott Ubisoft over Rayman Legends not being exclusive, and the Wii U version being delayed. I showed how "N" did the exact same thing with the new Zelda title, and how that is OK, but not what Ubisoft did.

I've ranted about Sony in regards to Vita issues in the past, but I wasn't ranting about "N" here, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

"N" does more dumb shit than all the others, so that is where my complaints lie most, but my comment here wasn't a slight against "N", but how the fanboys swallow their shit with little to no rhyme or reason, but when some else does it everyone is up in arms, but Ubisoft did the same thing with Rayman Legends that "N" has done with the Breath of the wild.

Why aren't you commenting on that, as that was the issue, nothing wrong otherwise, but as per the norm, the "N" fanboys can't argue the valid point, but instead is trying to call out something else entirely.

The Wii U version also released around 6 months before the other versions. Had they released at the same time I doubt that would have been the case.

If they had released at the same time, the PS4 and XB1 versions would have been out before their respective consoles.

But yes, I do think the head start helped the Wii U sales. It's still telling that it outsold on the Wii U over the PS3 and 360 versions - which were the targets of the delay and had much larger user bases.

Nintendo didn't wait until Breath of the Wild was nearly done and out to announce the NX version and delay it for another year or more to get the port work done. We didn't really know anything about the game until the NX part of the equation was announced.

On the other hand, Ubisoft waited until the last minute to announce their desire to delay Rayman Legends until the end of the year so they could release it elsewhere, like Rayman was this huge seller that had to be held back to unleash the full force of its awesome power, in the middle of the holiday season when it would get swallowed up by the many big releases on those other platforms. If you don't remember, they did the exact same thing to Origins by releasing it in the middle of the holiday season to not huge sales numbers because it was released in the middle of much bigger games. They could've easily finished it up on Wii U and released it that spring after launch and sold well enough as one of the only worthwhile Wii U games in the early part of the console's life and ported it everywhere else later on like any other normal company.
