Some months into this, it seems Jaysapathy's predictions have all come true.
I've worked in Advertising and Marketing for 3 pretty big retail chains and I know for a fact when a new department is formed (say a video game dept), it is run very tightly. Even though the employees might not want to admit it, it is really a "test" dept. If it fails (it's usually given a couple of years and then re-evaluated), it will fall back into the whole electronics dept instead of it being it's own individual entity.
The reason we got an abundant of clearances before was either:
#1. The GM, Buyer or Assistant Buyer didn't give 2 sh*ts about video games or peripherals. Looked at his/her screen, noticed the game is old (and taking up space) and dropped it (or didn't drop it). They had no clue that The Eye of Jugment (with camera) dropped to $15 is worth more than LIPS ($59.99).
#2. The whole electronics dept as a whole wasn't watched over very thoroughly. Most ABs (Assistant Buyers) do all the work and really do not have to "ask for permission" to drop/clearance out items. It's not cost efficient to RTV (return to vendor) video games as well as most other items. Once an item is in the store, it's there until gone (or stored in the stockroom). Some stay so long they even disappear from the inventory. Other items are what we called at one company "ghosts" (no-approval needed items you've dropped to an almost unheard of price to get rid of/be done with it). If a CEO knew you were marking down 37 inch LCD/HD TVs to $50, he would have your head on a plate. 90% of the time however, these items are gone before anyone's the wiser (hence "ghost"). It also helps their "quarterly revenue", which in turn means "bonuses" when met.
Video games/peripherals were "slipping through the cracks", but (at least for Kmart Corporate) this is not the case now. Sure, they're going to throw you a "bone" every 3-4 months (this may happen soon, since they now "monitor" this site and hear how upset some of you are), but I wouldn't expect it to be like it was (monthly-bi-monthly). Bottom line: if you see a game at a good price, grab it. You waiting for it to drop further might/might nor happen for months or ever happen (and then you have to worry about a regular consumer nabbing it before you).
It's all or nothing for me. If regular 90% off clearance prices come back, great news for me and I can start getting games at the price I WANT THEM AT. If not, then Sears and Kmart are off my radar and no longer exist to me.
Mind you, I am not their target customer with their new strategies, so they probably don't give a shit either way if they lose my business.
But I'll be sure to tell all of my family, my friends and their families that Sears & Kmart's brands are total shit and to go to elsewhere from here on out.
