These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?

Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

Maybe call, ask for the manager on duty and double check, but what I said is how I've been told it's supposed to work in the past. Things could have changed though.

i want to trade in Final Fantasy 13-2, they have a promo that gives you $30 store credit for it. If I trade that in with another game can I get that plus the 30% extra store credit if I use it to get Twisted Metal or Mass Effect 3? Im not sure if those 2 promo's will stack.

Thanks guys, though I decided to leave the Wii games at home.

Weird thing: I traded in 4 games which would have only netted me a 10% bonus but the clerk suggested I pre-order a qualifying game for the 30% promo. Then, later in the day, I cancel the pre-order. An employee actually encouraged me to game their system for whatever reason.

So, with the extra credit I had, I bought a used game. Turns out the disc was damaged so I returned it the same time I planned cancel my pre-order. I arrived at the store only to find out they couldn't do the former; at least not if I wanted credit on my powerup card. The only option was cash with the tax (I never paid tax since I used credit) fully refunded.***

With the $5 pre-order cancelled as well, I came out of the whole mess with $70 extra on my card for four games, only one of which was truly worth any money at all: BF3. I'm fairly happy with how things turned out!




*** I.. what? Why did that even happen? Gamestop seems to hate giving cash back so this surprised me completely.

The Base value for ff 13-2 has to be at least 25$. If you do the 30% (40 with card) pre order promo you will get more from that than the 30$ ff 13-2 promo. Don't let gs trick you my friend :)
 
Does anybody know if the Halo 3 edition xbox 360 matters or if they just count it as a 20gb pro console? Also can I just use a regular controller with it? I don't have the controller that came with the console anymore.

Doesnt matter. Same price as a regular 360. You can have any wired/wireless controller, but if it's a wired controller, you'll get less money.

Traded in some stuff. I got docked the refurb feeb ecause the USB cover on my original 360's faceplate was missing :/.

Otherwise some other tiv, not sure if with or without Edge:

Um, ok. I've had a 120GB (not offered on the Slim) from my old fat Xbox for quite awhile. Works perfectly flawless, and I don't see how the new ToU would result in anything negative, as I have yet to see any "repercussions."

It's still an official MS product, so I can't see there being a problem.

The hinge on my USB port is broken so it doesn't close...

I got hit with a $20 refurb because a small piece of the battery cap of the rechargeable battery (wireless controller) was missing.
 
Your stores must have strict refurb policies or something, i traded in a PSP 2000 with a nearly faded serial number and numerous scratches over the screen (Not mine, had given it to a cousin who ended up getting a 3DS), and didnt get any refurb fees.

Always YMMV on these issues. In the end, you're the owner of the item, may it be a system or game, and you can walk away and go to another Gamestop if you think the fee is unfair or overly exagerated. I know there's the idea of already being there but if you want the extra credit walk away, and remember which Gamestops, or even specific employees to avoid trading into.

It's not like you went out and bought an off-brand hard-drive. It's still Microsoft brand, all you did was re-purpose the enclosure case.

The $100.00 trade in guarantee for a PS3/360 when traded towards a new PS3/360 system as I recall from observation is more rare then the other promos above. Assuming you have a old 360 unit with wireless controller you are getting $45 base (according to the OP), then a $40.00 bonus will make the total $85.00. It's $15.00 you are missing out on when compared to the $100 trade promo towards a new system, but to worry over $15.00 that would mean you have to just play the waiting game for $15.00 and not even know if it will come back. Personally I would just take the loss and not worry over the $15.00. It's essentially a gamble because you have to worry about other factors by waiting (base trade in values dropping, system price drops, new system announcements). Getting rid of a dying 360 to receive a fresh new model ASAP should help ease the pain of getting $15.00 less for your trade in.

If you have the wireless adapter for your old 360, trade that in also since the newer 360's have it built in. That could help out a little more to get to $100. The hard drives for the older systems are getting next to nothing now. I think a 20gb gets like $1.00, but if you didn't even have a hard drive and don't need one then just get the 4GB system (expand with a flash drive for additional storage) with your trade in and you would only have to spend around $100 for a new 360 system that won't be on it's last legs. You can always get the hard drive later if money is tight.[/QUOTE]

Just wanted to say thanks for this, very helpful information. Traded in the Xbox for a new one over the weekend. They almost wouldn't take it because it was a little loose/broken on the top (where the hard drive goes in) despite not having been opened, but then they decided they didn't care when they took the faceplate off and saw the sticker was still there. Also, got the same $50+ $40 bonus from a few posts back.
 
FYI since all you guys are talking about trading in your consoles...

The PUR SOTW is an extra $50 trade-in credit on 360 and PS3 consoles for 3000 points.

Got $94 with an HDMI cable. I'm tempted to buy a couple hdmi cables for $1 and trade em in lol.

Anyway, you guys think I should buy a refurb'd 360 Slim from gamestop? Are there any infamous failures like the YLOD or RROD for the slim?

I was thinking the same exactly thing. Also have been running a 120GB hard drive in my slim for close to a year now.

I don't know if there are common errors, but I do have a personal experience with purchasing an official Microsoft Slim 250GB console (sold at Gamestop as "NEW" at about $50 off of MSRP).

The console itself was all factory-wrapped and looked shiny and new. Came with all factory-wrapped, untouched accessories. But after about a month of casual-to-normal weekly use, it would not read my discs. It was concluded that the laser seemed to have messed up somehow, and it would not read any discs (if it did, there was plenty of freezing)! Luckily, it was still in warranty, and I had to send it to Microsoft, paying only the cost of packing materials & wasted time without an Xbox (it was no-cost maintenance service, free packing slip).

Once I got the console back, it hasn't given me any major problems BUT when I play disc games on the Slim, it got really, really noisy - just as bad as the pre-slim consoles. Although I am not sure if that is normal or if now something else is wrong.

Does anyone know if gamestop accepts xbox 360 trade-ins without the controller? Also, does anyone know what kind of tests they do on the system when you go to trade it in such as seeing if it reads discs, checking for scratches, or checking if it goes online? I want to make sure my system doesn't have any problems when I trade it in. Thanks in advance.

You have to have a controller and AV cables. They make sure it reads a discs and if it looks beat but that is about it.

Assuming I understand how they trade in consoles (and the TIVs are still correct) if I trade in my 120GB elite unit I'm looking at $50 for the core unit plus wireless controller, $40 for the bonus, $6 for the 120GB HD (old TIV so maybe less) and $4 for the HDMI.

$100 when all is said and done is fantastic considering I was about to trade in at BB (they are only giving out $63) but that money could be turned spent on kindle cards or blurays.

They stick a random disc (whatever's handy) into the drive, start a new game, and let it run for 5 min. That's it ... no reformat of internal MU's, no Ethernet jack tests, no USB plug tests ... and when I brought in the high-def AV cable, they didn't even check the HDMI plug.
 
I just traded mine in. Went to a first GameStop and they didn't let me because my warranty sticker wasn't on. Went to another right after and they didn't check but made me wait like 30 min for them to test if it RROD. The thing is that my friend traded it at the first GameStop and they only tested it for like several minutes but I guess I was fine with that since I didn't have my warranty sticker anyways. Got 50 and another 50 from the coupon that I bought from the PowerUp Rewards.
