My dislike for indies stems more of how much praise and limelight they are getting on PS4 and Vita as if they are the end all be all direction of the future of gaming. Sony in particular is using this indie campaign for lack of a better term to hide the lack of content they are providing on their systems.
I think you're misunderstanding. AAA development and Indie Development are two very different things. They are complementary -- existing together.

However, in the traditional console space (pre-digital) generally only major releases could exist. You needed a publisher, distribution, the capital to create physical copies, etc. There were some exceptions - like cheap cash grab cut and paste games on cartridges, or a bit more ease of entry during the ps2 era due to the console's dominance... but in general, the cost of entry was large.

This 'indie resurgence' is just us seeing the cost of entry go down significantly due to digital releases. Now you can design a game with a small team and actually have an audience. People can release in niche genres like bullet hell and see profit with smaller risk, verses putting out tens of thousands of dollars to produce discs that may not sell.

It's essentially the punk rock movement music saw when cassette tapes hit the market and suddenly everyone who wanted could create content.

Now, Sony has only two real choices. They can ignore that movement, or they can embrace it. Ignoring it would mean far less games on their systems. The gaps between major releases would be that much more apparent. Or they can embrace it, and while there will be some failures, there could be a tetris/spelunky/minecraft that sees the light of day that everyone loves, and niche games like scmups or whatever that some of us love.

Them embracing indies does not stop or slow the production of AAA games. However, them embracing AAA games and not supporting indies would definitely result in less games, since small devs need that extra bit of support/love.

Most of the indie games would normally just go to PC and/or mobile... with a tiny bit of support, Sony gets them too. It's truly win/win.

A blog post here and there, or 10 minutes spent on indies during E3, doesn't mean they're not still pumping millions of dollars into bloodborne, uncharted 4, etc. It just means they're going after more games for us for a tiny fraction of the cost of a single AAA game.

Watching the reaction in various communities this week to the ps+ entries has been enlightening. I never realized so many gamers actually hate games and developers so much. Just a pure, crystallized, hatred that they spew out at the very people making games for them to play. It's gross.
Welcome to the internet!

If indies are the future of gaming, that is extremely depressing as from my experience indies lack the polish and magic that I crave from traditional games.

I've yet to play an indie that gives me a full fledged traditional gaming experience I get from retail titles. I've had positive experiences (cave story, limbo were great solid games) but they are bite sized experiences, snacks to regular gaming meals. I liken indies to virtual console titles.

It just sucks seeing week after week of these smaller gaming experiences replacing the regular releases of traditional games. It's as if a music lover was only given a choice of several new garage band albums to buy or a movie buff was only given new independent films to watch each week.
AAA games cost millions (sometimes hundreds of millions) of dollars to make, so it's entirely unreasonable to expect an amazing AAA game to come out every week/month. Indie games however aren't replacing them in any regard (I don't even know how someone could think that when the people involved with making the two types of games are in no way connected), but instead are now filling the gap between releases. Would you rather have nothing come out in a given week than a few smaller games that might actually be cool if you give them the chance? Because that's the alternative you're looking at.

As for indie games not giving you as in depth or polished an experience as you see in a AAA game, I think you need to play more of them if you've yet to find any like what you seem to want. Games like Transistor, Super Time Force, Jamestown, and Braid have deep and finely crafted mechanics, and are doing things that you'd never see in a AAA game. Yes they may only last a hand full of hours in general, but are we still at the point of judging a games quality on its length? I could name dozens of great indie games in just about any genre you can think of, so I find it hard to believe none of them would impress you. Maybe your standards are just really high, I don't know, but there is such a breath of different sorts of indie games that I really think everyone can find something to love.

i agree with everything you say, but just want to add --- a beauty of a game designed around mechanics is often replayability. That is to say, many people are done with a AAA cinematic game after 1 or 2 plays. Uncharted was great, TLOU was great, and i'm sure i'll go back to both... eventually.

But Tetris? Geometry wars? Robotron? Tempest (TxK)? Pinball? Crimsonland? Super Stardust? Resogun?

Those games provide me countless hours of enjoyment. I mean, I don't know how many hundreds of hours I've put into tetris over the years. And if i picked it up today, I'd still lose a few hours to it (it's coming to vita!). Or even something like super mario brothers... very replayable, in large part due to a focus on game mechanics over narrative (at that time, dictated by technology and its arcade roots).

I know not everyone cares about 'endless'/'score attack' type arcade games. But knocking them off at the knees as being 'short' isn't really fair either. Some of them are anything but, if you seek to master them. It's actually my biggest criticism of trophies in general -- the feeling that we're not 'done' a game till we plat it (even if we want to be but have hours of grinding ahead) and that once we plat a game we're done with it (even if we don't want to be). Hmm... off topic, I wonder how much being a pre-trophy gamer affects my perception of games vs. a post-trophy gamer.

I'm right to think that it's INCREDIBLY unlikely that Child of Light PS Vita or Ratchet & Clank Collection for PS Vita are going to go on sale in the next week or so, right? So I can go ahead and not worry about the fact that I'll have no money for them for a week or so and I can go ahead and bite on the R&C: Into the Nexus deal. Right? Right.

breakfuss, please stop being a nerd.
Well, yeah, I'm passionate about games. Sorry. Maybe I should have been clearer from the beginning. I love indies, AAA, whatever - I love it all. I've probably played more PSN indie releases this year than most here (I don't wait for sales). And I love PS+. So not being able to occasionally voice sincere discontent is annoying as hell.

If CoL was going on sale it would have happened this week. If you're determined to get it on vita then go ahead, but fair warning - it apparently doesn't run as well as the console versions.

You hit the nail on the head. This is precisely how I feel and why I don't hold indies to some lower standard. It's a prejudice of low expectations, and it's unfair to the amazing work that's happening in the independent scene.

I don't want to wrongly speak for @Afro_Insomniac, but I think his issue lies more with the type of indie game we often get with PS+. And while I don't feel the same, I understand his position. Something like Metrico or Thomas Was Not Alone is worlds apart from Transistor or Sequence (one of my favorites). Not only in genre but scope as well. But if the former is what Sony continues to showcase as the face of indie, that's what people limited to this platform will associate with it. So idk.

Yep. There are way more indie developers/games than top tier developers/games, so it's a result of pure numbers than Sony only focusing on one over the other. It's so much easier to announce five indie games for PS4/PS3/Vita on a random day than five games from big publishers.

I get the impression that some people don't consider games like Outlast, Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution, The Golf Club, Zen Pinball 2, Pinball Arcade, Project Cars, etc. because they don't fit the mold of the 2D retro homage that they consider all indies to be.

Anyone have any feedback on whether i should pick up Strike Force Zero or Trials Fusion?

I have heard only good things about nidhogg but it just doesn't look like my thing at all.

Ascension is a solid card battle game. I put a lot of hours into it . At the time it was probably the best in genre on ios. This makes me happy; I'd be even happier if i'd never played it, but it's been long enough I'll still be happy.

Hm... now i just want Eye of Judgement psp to go on sale. Such a great port - far better than the ps3 version. But $15 is a bit steep. And... Metal Gear Acid doesn't seem to be on psn, let alone vita compatible. Same with that Warhammer card game, dammit. Nobody wants my money.

Anyone have any feedback on whether i should pick up Strike Force Zero?
It's a tough call. It's one of those games that doesn't click with a lot of people through little fault of its own. I liked it, but I remember seeing complaints that it was difficult and repetitive.

It's a fairly simple space shooter that leans more towards arcade than sim. It's a little hard to describe because they obviously take inspiration from so many older games. It has a lot of mechanics that you would find in a PC space sim like Freespace 2, but the speed of the immediate gameplay feels more like something you would find in a console space shooter like Shadows of the Empire.

While not quite feeling dated, I label it as simple because it doesn't do anything to push the genre forward and so doesn't really feel like something new as much as it feels like something that exists to fill a void that has been ignored.

If you miss space shooters from 15 years ago it's worth playing, if you are spoiled by modern games you may find it dull.

Well, this is funny since it's essentially the same thing I posted right above you (minus the PS+ part).

It should be okay for people to disagree about next month's selection. Tell us why the games are worth a second look, then. That's what this forum is for. Simply saying the games are "free" or that complaining is "disrespectful to indie developers" doesn't help. It insults everyone's intelligence. Especially the latter, which again, is what my "defense force" remark was in response to.

Apologies for derailing the thread.

Just shut up, please. I'm not apologizing for anything I've posted, rather the unintended results. People like you are why we have two threads now. ALWAYS complaining about everyone else but never have anything positive or meaningful to add.

Yeah, currently you are. Because instead of allowing the situation to diffuse, you attempted to start it back up. Instead of allowing people to voice their grievances over cross-buy, you call them "spoiled". Instead of allowing people to voice their opinions on games, you dismiss them as entitled and incapable of understanding the value of Plus. All you do is complain in every post. It's old. If you hate it so much here, leave and start your own forum.

Anyone have any feedback on whether i should pick up Strike Force Zero or Trials Fusion?
With Regard to Trials Fusion, I've only played the demo. I played the first Trials on 360 and enjoyed it, but didn't play it much/didn't get far. I don't know what they've added to Fusion to make it better than the original. Chances are, if you liked the original, you'll like Fusion.

With regard to Strike Suit Zero, I shamelessly repost an earlier post here:

Glad I waited for Strike Suit Zero to be $10. The game is good, but there's quite a few things that could be added to make it better.

Controls could be tighter
Pitch & Yaw are on both sticks; this is confusing when I'm used to other flight sims like Starhawk or Ace Combat
HUD is a little too minimalist -- I don't know if my laser cannons are grouped or not, don't know where my health meter is, etc.

Beyond that, the graphics are great, and the game plays smoothly. It's possible that the confusing flight controls will be self-explanitory when I actually get to the strike suit itself. I've only played the first mission.

That said, the Y-axis is inverted on both analog sticks. It annoys me when developers don't give you the option to customize the controls more to your liking. That is, I like to have my left stick inverted and my right stick not-inverted. I understand it was a PC game ported to a console, but that's no excuse to not let me rebind the keys on the controller, dangit.

I said people are getting spoiled over cross-buy and left it at one post, unlike you who argues with people. I didnt respond to anyone arguing. Me voicing my opinion on cross-buy wasnt complaining...it was brought to my attention cause of the people complaining about something not being cross buy

I dont even know what you're talking about with the value of plus since I didnt even partake in that discussion except for my sarcastic post about the b2g1

But it is really funny that you of all people are telling me that all I do is complain. Only time I complained was when Tyler was banned and everyone would just talk about him every other post...and of course when you spew your stupid shit that you usually do. Other than that I dont get where you think I hate it here. That other thread was made after some discussion happened that I wasnt even around for. I remember cause I asked about it and supposedly a mod or someone told them to make it. I had nothing to do with that and even forgot it existed.

I posted a bit about it in the other thread:

SSZ starts off pretty slow, but once you get into it I think it's a lot of fun. Flying around feels fantastic, and using the mecha-like Strike Suit creates a really cool back and forth between conserving energy and going balls to the wall firing hundreds of rockets at once. It also looks incredible and has a gorgeous soundtrack. It's biggest flaw is that level variety is almost nonexistent, with most every mission having you do the same exact scenario just with different enemy types or a new space station to fly around. I also think it would have benefited from a larger number of short missions, as the way it's setup now you'll be spending 30-60m on just a single mission, which can feel tedious at times.

I still think it's a really neat game that doesn't have many if any contemporaries, and if you're a fan of arcade space flight games I'd definitely give it a look.

Are you having your period or something? Never seen so much whining in this thread as the crap you've been spewing out for the last two days. Take some meds and give it a rest, everyone is really sick of it!

First, that is insulting to women. No need for that and you should delete it. Second, if you read what I posted you'd realize that I haven't in fact whined. I've made reasonable and cogent arguments about games, nothing else. Everyone here has the right to voice their opinion - from slidecage to Afro_insomic to filmthedead or whoever. As long as I am member I will continue to drive that point home, and if it bothers you, click on the ignore button.

Now, please, drop it and return to the tantalizing conversation currently happening in this thread.

I don't check this thread for a day, and I come back to pages of bullshit. Man.
It's sad because there are people who feed off negativity. People that truncate opinions for the sake of expediency. There's no way anyone could think people were "whining" if they had actually read any of what was posted. There was no need to create a binary of aaa vs indie. All it does is create barriers. Let's try to better understand one another instead of being so quick to snipe everytime we disagree. A lot of good stuff was actually said.

Man, I'm sorry if I pissed you off, but if you're going to list people, can I not be in the same list as Slidecage?

He insulted women because he asked you if you were on your period?

I guess me asking if you were retarded the other day MIGHT have been an insult to those with mental disabilities.
While I actually do find the casual use of terms like 'retarded' and 'period' offensive [in so much that words can be offensive, which is another issue], the caliber of meta in this post is just awesome.

You didn't piss me off. I like you. I only used you as an example because you were called "spoiled" for wanting CoL cross-buy. Which is a completely reasonable request considering it is cross-buy in Europe.

As far as slidecage, I know the dude posts in all sorts of crazy formats and has some wacky expectations, but it's already been stated before that he has health issues. So the constant jokes about him really are in poor taste.

If you can't possibly understand why that insinuation is disrespectful toward women I don't know what to tell you. I also don't recall you ever calling anyone 'retarded' but, yeah, that'd be equally as wrong. Never a reason for that and I do believe it's a bannable offense.

I don't think you're really sorry about derailing the thread if you've dragged it out for so long when I dropped it last night because the discussion wasn't worth continuing on any longer.

On TOPIC, looking forward to yet another port of Metal Slug 3 (PS4/PS3/Vita), one of my favorite arcade games on the Neo Geo!  And yes I already own MS3 on every other possible platform (except Neo Geo CD, and yes including the MS Anthology for PSN, which works pretty well on Vita), but I still welcome more Neo Geo ports to Sony hardware.  There are so many other gems that came out on the Neo Geo, SNK really needs to get with it porting them over.  This is a day 1 buy for me!

I'd love to see a proper collection of the Metal Slug games since at least those early games were great.

There's a standalone expansion to Saints Row IV coming to PS4 and PS3 on 1/27/15 for PSN or it'll be included with the HD remaster of Saints Row IV: Re-Elected. The expansion is $19.99 and the remaster is $29, which makes the bundle $49.99.

Where do I say I wasn't allowed to express my opinion? Where is that? Point it out. I said that telling people PS+ games are "free" or that we should appreciate them because "indie developers work hard" doesn't have any place in the discussion. Irrelevant shit.

All this could have been avoided had you not interpreted that as me saying my mind couldn't be changed about the games. You then implied it was a way to incite an argument. You were mistaken.
