I wouldn't say trophies stop me from playing Nintendo. Just not many games that interest me and I feel that it is targeted at more of a younger audience. I play Pokemon on my 3DS and the occasional Mario games here and there. I really can't wait for Super Smash Bros on the 3DS. Thats pretty crazy that someone would avoid a system solely based on trophies/achievements. I though I was bad, I will admit they add a challenge and some enjoyment but its not a deal breaker. I do mainly play newer games though and like 98% have rewards.

Side Note: Im loving the true trophies site. So similar to true achievements. Just not too many people hosting sessions since its still a new site. Its fun seeing what others here are playing.

Well, look, I'm not going to outright endorse Nintendo hardware in here all of places, but if you seriously feel this way it might not hurt to augment your trophy gathering with...something a tad less "plugged in". You probably wouldn't care as much if you didn't constantly feel in competition with others. But they don't want you to know dat, breh. I'm trying to put on you to some truth. Don't fight it. Why do you think MGS4 didn't have them for so long? Because, the messages. They knew it would dissuade so many from playing. So many of the lost. With the sort of compulsiveness you describe, one can be easily manipulated into all sorts of shit. From murder, to buying things like AMY and Spelunky. All in the name of trophies. It ain't healthy. One platform has become the last bastion of hope, so is it any surprise to see it such peril? Ask yourself that the next time you go for a platinum.
This is way off topic so I won't keep carrying it on, but I'm not arguing with you. I'm just saying there's nothing that Nintendo puts out that I want to play. I've tried games at friends' houses, and none of these Mario or Smash Bros games really get me going. If the next Zelda game miraculously came to PS3, and had no trophies, I would 100% play it. In regard to MGS4, I actually started that, played it once, and then I think a month later they released the trophy patch. That's the most recent example of playing a game that didn't have trophies (at the time.)

About the competition...well I'm not really competing against anyone. I'm on things like the CAG leaderboard at TT, but I'm not sitting here plotting my next move to go up a spot. I rarely play easy platinum games, and the only one I'm in completion with is myself. Going back to a discussion from lat week though, I've always done these things. Mastering material and getting gold chocobos in FF7, getting all endings in Chrono Trigger. Trophies are just a record of proving that I've done something in a game. And it's cool (maybe this is kind of being in competition with others) to look at a trophy checking site and say "Wow, only x amount of people have done this too!"

Anyways, that's my gay novel about trophies.

Alright, you win. For now. That was good.

I get that there's some modicum of competition for some people when it comes to trophies, but is that really the majority? I would've guessed for more people it would plug in to their pokemon brain function (i.e. the 'gotta catch em all'). that's certainly my drive - completionism. If I get a platinum I feel like I can be completely done with a game and that I can look back later and see a record of what and when I finished it.

I genuinely have no idea what trophies anyone else has. I think I'm in the 30s on our cag truetrophies leaderboard, I guess I know that much. I think that thing's fun just to see what everyone's playing. maybe I'm quite the minority though.

edit: fuck, the cap'n beat me by a mile.

So it seems that Rami guy owes me a refund! Lets see if he's true to his word. (Super Crate Box). :)

Also, LOL at the guy that thinks he's going to beat Spelunky in 1 day. Even the lesser "beat". Please do add me on PSN so I can track your progress. And to compare Daily Challenge scores. :)

I would love VIII and IX for cheap but it's probably never going to happen. Squenix probably fails to realize that if they made the PS1 era games $5 for a week that they would get all the monies.
Might end up paying 9.99 anyways -.-

Need something fun for my vacation from PC/PS3.

They've put the FF games on sale early on in the past two years, which seems to suggest another FF sale will happen in a few months.

I think I'd be more inclined to buy a WiiU if it had a trophy/achievement system.  Ditto with a 3DS.  It's not the only thing holding me back (WiiU will never be necessary except to play exclusives so might as well let it build up a lot more exclusive titles; most the Nintendo and other great 3DS games never seem to drop in price) but I'd definitely be more interested in those consoles if they did.  I'm not much of a completionist (as my percentage shows) but I LOVE how trophies and achievements basically create a full history of what I've played since I've had a 360 and PS3.

Equally as off-topic, but Muramasa is pretty sweet so far.  in-Game art looks amazing.

Just get Spelunky. Half the price and hundreds of hours of fun.

It definitely is a factor in picking platform and what to play when I'm on the fence. It's nice at least when I'm actually playing a game that someone knows.

I miss the days when I didn't have to factor anything into buying a system other than what my poor ass parents would find on sale.
I don't. I can buy whatever I want now. Just spent $8 on The Bureau at Gamefly! Woohoo adulthood! Woohoo buying crappy games! Woohoo Hamsterball!

Yep.

Then you "enjoyed" your N64 and its 3 decent games.

I'm glad things have changed and Nintendo is losing market. I can't wait until they cease to make consoles and begin whoring out their first-party titles.

I pretty much feel the same way except I already own a WiiU and 3DS for exclusives. I highly doubt I will ever buy a multiplatform game for WiiU/3DS if I can have it on PS3/4 or 360/One.

I agree. I like the WiiU a lot more than the abomination that was the Wii but I will not shed a tear if/when Nintendo goes software only.

Every time I start playing a game without trophies, I tend to lose interest in favor of a game with trophies. I'm trying to force myself to finish Radiant Historia.

Speaking of which, I downloaded Germinator based on all the praise you gave it and it's not very good. I'm feeling pretty burned man, how do I get a refund?

ha getting that game. Race for plat? lol
Yeah...I think I'm gonna pass on that offer. Thanks though.

I grew up with Nintendo and have nothing against them. That being said, I'd love to play games like Mario and Zelda on a console I actually own. But the 3DS still sells like crazy, Sony is probably in just as bad (if not worse) shape than the Big N.

I thought that only happened to me,its the reason I never beat MGS4 maybe one day ill beat it since it has trophies now.

Not a big fan of Spelunky :(
Then you play it your entire vacation until you are and you're not allowed to come home until you do.

Like 3/DS games it's not an issue for me because they never have and so I don't really expect it. But I'm still trying to get through Tools of Destruction because while it's really fun the lack of trophies does actually make me feel like I'm wasting my time a little.

That game has trophies, nodes, got to unlock all 236 nodes! Also the game is awesome.

Only game I have that doesn't have trophies is Saint's Row 2, and that didn't stop me from playing it to completion as it was gobs of fun.

I have mixed feelings about trophies. They can turn games into chores. Sometimes it's nice to get away from that - which is much easier if there are no trophies. Play the game because the game is fun. Crazy idea. But I do like the history of it. And it was helpful tonight for finding out if my nephew had ever played Portal 2. He hadn't. Gift ordered. :)

Play it again because it's so fuckin awesome. Try different builds, etc. I never got into PvP.
I just platted the EU version as a melee dude. I did the NA version as a magic/ranged dude. I didn't really find that much difference in the game. I'm not bashing, just observing. One thing I did notice, if you've already played the game through the under 10 hours guide on PS3T is amazing for blasting through the game.

I played as a guy who would just defend and backstab. Then I did an assassin build with parry/riposte as a focus. Then I tried an intelligence build to use the Moonlight sword. I'd also help as a blue phantom.

I love the "cataloging" aspect of trophies as well. It's definitely neat to revisit and reflect on what I've played, or to see what people on my friendslist are playing and completing. I just wish it was less focused on arbitrary markers of "completion". It's ironic because I think the 3DS has more useful metrics (hours played, avg. play time, date started/finished, etc.). You look at my PS3 trophy list, though, and it appears I don't ever finish anything.

As far as not playing a game because it doesn't have trophies - I cannot understand. At. All. Take MGS4, for instance. There are soo many things going on in that I'm not even sure how you can properly digest it and concern yourself with trophies (at least on the first play through). I know most won't agree, but specifically in the case of MGS4, that is not the way to play the game. I know that's a bold statement to make, but I can't see any way around it. In fact, I think that's in direct conflict with Kojima's intentions. I think he considers it more than a "game" given the great measures he takes to immerse us in that world (as implausible as it can be sometimes). Trophies fundamentally break that.

If anyone is on the fence with NHL 14, allow me to give you the only incentive you'll need if you're a hockey fan: it includes an updated NHL 94.

Flim flam argle bargle. How did I manage to not download the last set of free mobile games?! Didn't bother checking because I was sure I had done it when they were first available.

I got one piece and d&d.  Side note: As I beat the D&D game I then remembered paying $5 in quarters in the arcade to beat the game.  So IMO I saved $1.25.

Seriously, you guys wouldn't shed tears over Nintendo being reduced to Sega status? You must be either too young to care, Genesis kids, or have a heart made of hard stone. Mario on Playstation? Zelda on Xbox? My childhood weeps for thee.

I feel the same way about lack of an achievement system for old/Nintendo games, and I don't like it. I know I will reach a point where I will just have to play the first-party favorites but it is part of what stops me from buying a WiiU. Whatever their motovation it was pretty foolish financially not to just put in an achievement system. Apple even has one, for crying out loud. Just make it optional for the weirdos. What's the harm in that?

I couldn't stand Spelunky for Xbox but I'm probably going to get it again to give it another chance on Vita. No, I don't know what's wrong with me.
