How bad does a marriage have to end for your ex to want to split your digital game licenses? I imagine that's the least of your worries if you're trying to figure out how to split those. I say take the loss and get that person out of your life asap. Can't put a price on stress and your sanity.

I won't mind if they went back to the PS1 style cases (cd cases) because they held up better (no bowing inward). I was all for physical games until I started PS+ and realized that the console was quieter and you could change games on the fly without the hassle of having to swap out disc.

So, how do people on here feel about PSOne, PS2, and PS3 backwards compatible games being exclusive to PSNow? It sounds like a bad idea to me. I don't want to pay a monthly fee just to play a few games from previous consoles that they decide. And, the streaming from PSNow isn't very good with my slow garbage Comcast internet. If Xbox can figure out how to do BC from a disc, and Sony used to know how on the PS3, I don't see why they can't just take the PS3 BC and put that in the PS5.
Edit: I had the last model of PS3 with the digital backwards compatibility after they removed the PS2 hardware from inside. So, Sony could have taken that digital emulator and slapped it into the PS5, at least for PS2 and PSOne games.

Yeah at the bare minimum ps1 and 2 bc should be doable. Obviously they just want money from digital sales. Regardless of quality of the ports themselves. Some I hear are poor quality like star ocean 3.

If you think this new generation is going to play out the same, I implore you to research how the 5th generation went when Microsoft was competent.

Considering the sales of retro consoles such as the NES/SNES Minis, the Genesis and TG16 minis, etc. along with all these retro game collections, Arcade Archives, etc. I would say people do still want to play the old games. Besides, think about it, when the PS5 comes out, are you going to toss all your PS4 games that you're playing now and be like, "These sucks, I will only play PS5 games from now!"?

No, people care about PS4 games, especially the GAAS games, which is why they're going to be BC. The vast audience for this stuff has moved on from PS2 and PS3 games. And don't mistake nostalgia for actual desire to play these old games. There's a reason why it's easy to find all the mini consoles these days.

And the funny thing about the 360 generation (wasn't the fifth generation the PS1 gen? I think you meant seventh) was that Sony really started coming on strong once they dropped their PS2 BC. You don't think they learned lessons from that?

I can only speak for myself and how what Microsoft is doing has moved me. Their efforts have moved me from barely turning on my Xbox One to now I primarily game on it, I was hardcore in Sony's camp since about 2010 when Microsoft started dropping the ball, and I'm just not feeling it anymore. I went from buying everything but exclusives on PlayStation to now doing the opposite because I know they will always work on future Xbox systems It is so cool looking at the library on the Xbox console and seeing all your 360 purchases sitting there ready to go. I'm actually excited to get a Series X at launch where I no longer know if I'm going to jump in on the PS5 right away, though I probably will since I buy all consoles regardless, even bought an Xbox One at launch. But my PS5 is going to be an exclusives machine unless a multi platform game takes advantage of that Sony SSD or if Sony figures out how to make PS Now equivalent to Game Pass and can get a reward program as generous as what Microsoft offers.

I don't see the contradiction at all. The entire post was saying that people don't stop caring about games because they're old. Now, I can only speak for myself on this part, but I have an entire shelf full of PS3 and PS4 games (and boxes of PS2 games in my closet.) I spent good money on them, and they are all in pristine condition, and I would like to be able to play them. Unfortunately, I can't play my PS2 games due to the fact that my launch PS3 with BC dying last year, and hooking up my composite PS2 to an HDMI 4k TV is pretty much impossible, but if I could pop a PS2 game into a PS5 and play them with upres'd graphics, there are whole lot I own that I would like to be able to play. And we're talking about a console here, not a PC, there shouldn't be any struggle to get them to work on modern hardware (either they do, or they don't.)

Now, I will admit that I do tend to play more current gen titles than previous gen titles, because like you said, there are new ones coming out every day. This causes the older ones to fall by the wayside, of course. But if you haven't played them yet, they're new to you, even if they were bought a decade or so ago.

This discussion about backwards compatibility is missing a principle of sales.  People want to feel good about the product they're buying.  It's not always the actual product but the intangibles behind it.  I'd bet a lot of those old men driving Corvettes don't drag race.  But they like the feeling that they can.

People may or may not actually care about backwards compatibility, but a lot of people sure like the idea of having it.  It makes them feel like their purchase is a lot more valuable.  Or it makes them feel like the product they chose is made by a company that delivers value to the customer.

This is actually really easy and can be inexpensive to fix. PS2 had component cable options, which two of the three 4K sets I have owned still had. If you don't have that, there are okay adapters for ~$30 and really nice ones thats will upscale just about any source for $60+. If you really enjoy playing your older consoles, the small investment in a nice upscaler can future proof your entire collection.

i don’t have an xbox1 yet because the exclusives just aren’t plentiful or original enough (neither the non-bungie halo sequels nor the non-epic gears of war sequels are exciting to me)

i hope phil buying all those studios results in new AAA single player IP exclusives that i’m interested in...im good on games as a service, battle royale, or any micro transaction laden gambling simulation disguised as sports.

The only time I would want bc is because I did not get a chance to play a game from the previous gen. Usually I just keep my old system (PS1, PS2, PS3) until I don't care to play it anymore. Then I move onto the next gen because they have new games that I want to try. What I have notice is when I'm disappointed in the current gen games (lack of racing games for me on PS4), then I want to go back and play the older games ex. NFS Most Wanted (PS2), Gran Turismo.

I've decided to just start selling my new 'old' games since I can't justify opening them now with the way prices are. If I want to play them in the future, I'll just find another way to do so.

I think BC helps in the sense that those already invested in a brand's "ecosystem" are more likely to stick with that brand. Kind of a twist on the sunk-cost fallacy thing.
If Xbone had launched with BC and the PS4 didn't, you bet your ass that it'd have hurt Sony. The problem is the BC thing only came years later (for a select number of titles over time) when people were already invested into the PS4 or Xbone as separate products. Additionally, BC for Xbone at launch would have given them a significant library advantage over PS4, even if people didn't already own any of the BC games.

I do think it has noticeably helped the Xbone, but I agree that it probably hasn't hurt the PS4 all that much at this point.
PS5 definitely cannot afford to up on the BC front though, given the Series X's focus on full Xbone BC at launch and people now expecting BC due to the move to less unique hardware/a more PCesque approach.
