I have already made a space in my entertainment center for the PS4. It actually looks cool to have all Playstation console lined neatly adjacent to each other. Too bad I don't have my OG PS anymore :(

After 720 is announced and 360 gets a price drop I will kick out my secondary Bose to make room for it :)
So you don't have a B/C PS3 yet you're whining about no B/C on PS4? Okey dokey.
Obviously reading comprehension is not your strong suit, sunshine.

Once again, I'm strictly saying people have a right to not be happy about no BC on the PS4 and that I understand why they would want it.
There is nothing about being "entitled" with expecting that a game system in 2013, that has all of this stuff they can add to these consoles, that they would be able to include something like being able to play an older disc. If they had the capability in their last two systems (well until they stupidly took it out of the PS3 later on), nothing should stop them from being able to offer that.

They try to make their system like a computer for your TV, yet they can get something like being able to play older discs enabled on them. I'm not a computer gamer, but I'm sure if your computer with the latest gaming setup (graphic cards, RAM, etc.) can play the newest games as well as play older games.

I'm not here saying I'm boycotting the system or anything like that. That's just stupid. Hell, it doesn't bother me all that much or I would have the backwards compatible PS3 right. I'm just saying they can have all of these bells and whistles on this thing except the one thing that I know a lot of gamers want to see on their new systems besides update graphics and all of that. I understand and agree with why people want BC on the consoles.
Not really comparable, since all PCs are more or less the same ISA, hence BC is never a problem. If you upgraded from a PC to a Mac then to a Ubuntu machine for example, then BC would be impossible.

BC adds cost to the system especially in a overhaul like PS4 (if anybody still argues about this, please, take a course on computer architecture, or read the Hennesy book), which would be imposed on the consumer. For those who don't want BC because either 1) we have perfectly working old consoles 2) we are new gamers that don't care about old games, this is a huge deal.

UGH! It has nothing to do with the discs... it's the actual hardware. It actually makes MORE sense that as the tech gets more complex that it'd be harder to make BC emulation work. The PS2 could emulate the PS1 because it was built on similar hardware and because the PS1 wasn't really that advanced. What you're asking is for the PS4 to pretend it's running at all the same levels that a PS3 was. Curse you cell processor!!! It's not a matter of reading a blu-ray.... Look at how the PC port of Saints Row 2 was handled. There's your perfect example of why BC isn't easy. You literally have to mimic everything about the PS3, include one inside or recode everything just to make it work.

Anyway, I'm done trying to rationalize with a troll or a 3rd grader (I can't tell which one he is yet) good luck TooPoor, you'll need it.

Well I stand corrected on that.

However, I still understand why a lot of people would want to see backwards compatibility. I'm just baffled at people acting like it's a sin to want something like that on the consoles.

It's one thing to want it. It's another thing to cry about it when they don't get it.

It's cool, I completely understand why some desperately want BC. Hell, I actually want it, if the cost overhead is around or less than $100.

But it literally makes no sense for Sony to do this, since the ones who want BC and would refuse to buy the new console are the minority, and by satisfying this small audience, it would jeopardize the marketing appeal of the new console to the masses. The profit "milking" from HD re-releases is of course also a factor, but not a dominating one.

That's great news on the used game confirmation as it would have been the next Xbox or bust to me if both blocked them.

Also, I totally understand the wish for BC even if it isn't easy to do or cost-effective. What I would like to see happen is for consumers to have a choice in it. Many gamers would laugh at spending an extra $100 for BC but I would pay that personally and I'm sure a lot of others would, too. It's just personal preference.

I prefer to spend a little extra money if it means convenience, really, in lots of aspects of life. It's why I have power seats in my car. Ugh, just pull a couple of levers and save $500! Well, what if I don't want to have to?

It isn't just leaving what you already have. My TVs and receivers are all pretty maxed out on inputs so now I get to deal with splitters and messy solutions. I have to keep around extra controllers. It's an extra box in my entertainment center and/or bedroom. It isn't a big deal, but $100 or whatever it might have been would have been fine to me to eliminate the need for my PS3.

Besides, if it's just about economics you would make much more than $100 in being able to sell your PS3 and just have a PS4 around. The streaming idea sounds neat but, really, all I'm interested in is if it's going to mean rebuying the games you want to play or if there will be some sort of system of recognizing/discounting what you already have. Unfortunately, if history is a lesson from Sony, it will be the former.

I understand not offering two different models exclusively for BC but I would have been interested for one, even at a higher price. I understand not wasting resources on doing it but it would have been a nice option. It's certainly not going to stop me from getting one if it's attractive on all other fronts so I'm not a member of that extreme.

Still, it all looks neat and I look forward to hearing the answer to my biggest unanswered question: How is Plus going to tie into PS4, if at all?

I think the PS4 is all about fixing mistakes they made with the PS3. Here's a quote from a Joystiq commentator that I found pretty insightful about the hate and what Sony is changing:

I don't understand the... hate right now.
Sony started off the conference with "we made the wrong decision with The Cell, it was a bad move." So they confirm the x86 CPU rumor and 8GB DDR5 RAM. Which were the 2 biggest issues Sony had with the PS3 and developers not being able to gripe with.
Sony outright just owned up to their mistakes, corrected them for the next gen, and more or less admitted they were wrong on stage.
No one is commenting on this.

Then they announce things like Gakai streaming playable, full demos of video games from the PSN store. That you can presumably buy and continue straight from that point. That basically not only is a huge revolution for the industry and consumers, but for developers who don't have to make seperate demo programs for their games. Everyone wins.
No one is commenting on this.

They announce that they are finally getting their act together on Remote Play. With Gakai and the onboard hardware, this theoretically can actually work with almost any game on the PS4. Unlike last time were only a very few select titles will work.
No one is commenting on this.

Sony went on to show, while maybe not what everyone expected and wanted, several video games. Mixture of cool new IPs and returning titles. Mixture of genres as well. It was a balanced amount of PR/investment stuff and actual gameplay footage. Also Watchdogs. Everyone made WAVES on the internet during E3 because of it. And now, I barely see a peep about it among the WAVES of complaints.
No one is commenting on this.

Also announced was a really cool sleep function, background downloadable technology, an EXTREMELY amazing design app or software suite w/e that may be from MM, and awesome looking tech demos.
No one is commenting on these.

Instead, people are commenting on how they didn't get to see the actual console. Which was specifically mentioned to be in prototype stage. People are commenting about how the PS4 won't have BC with PS3 games, which they haven't confirmed or denied yet. Instead, they announced that we might be able to play all these games on the PS4 even PSP and Vita titles (he did say mobile). People are commenting about really stupid and uninformed shit like "oh x86 can't have more than 4GB".

And the BEST in my opinion: "I don't care about social media". Technically, you're commenting on a news site, a form of social media, about video games. It's just not labeled Facebook or Twitter. It would be like saying you're not using an MP3 Player because it isn't an iPod. And if you didn't care about the video game aspect of social media, you wouldn't be commenting on Kotaku/Joystiq/IGN/ect.

Admittedly, the Square Enix thing was nothing but frustrating. That isn't necessarily Sony's fault, but damn that was nerve wracking.

I think Sony also learned with the PS3 that B/C is not worth it as PS3 sales struggled when they did offer the B/C.
I think Sony also learned with the PS3 that B/C is not worth it as PS3 sales struggled when they did offer the B/C.
Agreed, but that's why it would be nice to have two different models at launch, although not at the cost of resources to more important features. Yeah, I had forgotten about the immediate demos and playing a game before it's finished downloading. That's pretty darn cool.

PS3 sales struggled when they had BC because they outpriced the competition. And it affected when I bought the system, because once they removed BC functionality with the first price drop, I ended up waiting until the slim came out to buy one. If Sony decides to not be BC, and the next Xbox is, I know what I'm gonna buy. I hope Sony figures that out sooner rather than later. (Although to be fair, I'm probably getting the next Xbox first anyway because that's what my friends will probably get.)

Wow, just jumped into some unhappiness! I never buy consoles on launch anyway, so I'll say... I got my $10 credit and wouldn't known about it if not for this thread. Thanks thread!

There's no use in getting all butt-hurt about the lack of BC on the PS4, whether in the form of physical media or PSN downloads. Cloud gaming is the the future, and Sony knows it. They even mentioned in the press conference that they were hoping to eventually build an online infrastructure that would allow PS1, PS2, PS3, and even PS4 games to be played via streaming on a number of different devices. It's pretty clear that their longterm goal is a Netflix/Spotify-like service that combines a PS+ type subscription model with Gaikai's streaming capabilities. That very well may be the entire concept behind the PS5 by the time we get to that point, and even the entire idea of "owning" a game could eventually be a thing of the past. All the whiners might as well get on board with the idea now cause it's going to happen whether they like it or not.

This...would...suck...but I like games so I wouldn't be all butt hurt like a lot of peeps who say they will quit gaming if they don't own the games. I feel like you're in the wrong hobby at that point.

Doesn't outprice mean "sell at a better price than"?
Also unrelated, can anyone recommend those Vita grip things? Do they work well? And what's a good price to pay for them? Thanks in advance.
i own two sets of grips (asked different people for them for xmas).

i have the PDP trigger grips from Best Buy (they have real triggers) and the CTA ones. They have longer handles, don't cover the normal trigger buttons, and 'lock' on, at the expense of being able to plug it in.

i much prefer the PDP ones... I like having triggers (feels more natural than the flat vita trigger buttons) and i like being able to plug it it while playing w/o needing to remove the grips.

If Sony decides to not be BC, and the next Xbox is, I know what I'm gonna buy. I hope Sony figures that out sooner rather than later. (Although to be fair, I'm probably getting the next Xbox first anyway because that's what my friends will probably get.)
Wait. What?

You're saying the PS3 struggled due to pricing due to BC and it directly affected when you bought yours. Fine, agreed.

But... you then say "you hope they've learned from their mistake"... but then say if the PS4 isn't BC, you're going to go XBOX? What?

If the PS4 was BC, it would have all the issues that the launce PS3 did in spades, because it would be even more expensive to include ps3 hardware emu in every PS4 than it was to include PS2 in the PS3.

Or by 'learn from their mistake' did you mean you want them to include BC for free? Because that's just not a possibility.

anyone knwo if you can sign up for a year of PS+ without using your wallet balance? I have like 30 bucks that i dont want to use, id rather just charge it straight to a credit card. Is there any way of doing that? I could just buy a prepaid card, but i dont think that gives the 3 months does it?

think i may use my $10 credit to get valkyria chronicles 2. I have a physical copy but my psp screws up reading disks a lot, it would be nice to have a digital copy

Can't you just add the year to your cart, make sure you have your cc on file, and it will say not enough funds and should just take it straight from your card.

Hmm no, i dont think so because that would probably take the $30 balance i dont want to touch, and then take the rest from my CC. I want to put it all on the CC. Maybe i can just call them direct and charge it?

Just buy another psn card with your credit card.

Yeah, I don't really see the issue - I'd rather use my existing credit first anyway. If you are going to spend that $30 later just use your credit card then (or buy another PSN card as someone suggested). And maybe with PS+ you will decide you don't need to make any more PSN purchases ;).

it's been confirmed on the sony blog that it does.

Dang, wish I would get the free $10:( I also think that the main reason people are complaining about the BC is that they want to be able to sell their ps3 and keep their games while cutting the price they have to pay for the ps4 by $100+

Buy a year of PS+ from any store. Redeem the 12 month code and you will get the bonus 3 months. I just did this for my last card and it worked perfect. Then your $30 is safe in your wallet. Enjoy!

Edit: I got my $10 code from Sony. I'm so glad I got hooked up with this promo.
i own two sets of grips (asked different people for them for xmas).

i have the PDP trigger grips from Best Buy (they have real triggers) and the CTA ones.

Thanks for the input, and thank you to the other person who responded as well. The PDP ones look really nice, I think I'll probably pick those up when I get a chance.

You may also want to try the eForcity grips. They are similar to the PDP grips but don't have triggers (it is open for you to push the real shoulder buttons on the Vita. I am not sure whether I like the PDP or eForcity ones better, but I was not thrilled with how I felt the PDP triggers could be pushing the Vita buttons too hard, etc. Also, the springiness of the triggers is questionable at times. However, the PDP does feel better in your hands in general.

I was able to find the eForcity grips on Sears.com for $4 with free shipping. Not sure if that is still available, but you can get them for at least the same price as the PDPs.

Open your MSG box regardless. It didn't show up as having a new message like it normally does when you have one. At first I was disappointed, then I clicked on it anyway and it was there.

Any suggestions on what should I buy with my $10 promo?
I'm a PS+ member and I was thinking about: Trine, Plant vs Zombies or Metal Gear Solid (PSONE)...

Plant vs Zombies should be in anyone's library. Personally, I am planning on using mine for Urban Trials Freestyle on Vita. I love Trials on Xbox, and would like something similar (even if not as great) on Vita.

Thanks for the heads up on Sears! I had read several reviews similar to yours about the PDP triggers not being spot-on, so I figured I'd go with the cheapo eForcity ones from Amazon and see if I liked them. I ordered from Amazon then read your post and checked Sears. I was able to get it for $0.50 cheaper at Sears, and was able to get the White one instead of the Black one to go with my white vita. (the white ones were close to $7 on Amazon, $3.81 at Sears)

I'm buying Knytt Underground with mine. You can also put it towards Okami HD and only have to pay $10 out of pocket for that.
Are they turning off the PSN functionality for PS3? Is Sony going to break into your house and steal your PS3? Or are they going to send out a bug to zap all PS3s to make them a shiny brick? :)
Consoles are big these days. I have the redesigns for both the 360 and PS3 (2nd version) and no space for another unless I add some storage next to the TV. Fortunately I did all of my downloadable game buying on the 360 and PC during this generation so it won't be that hard for me to put away the PS3 if I get a PS4.

However, what does no backwards compatibility mean for PS+ on the PS4? They're not going to give away PS4 games at launch unless they're cheap indie games and none of the PS3/PSN titles will work on it. Does that mean the instant game collection will be minis and PS1 titles, or will there be no instant game collection, at least not for a few months?

You are the second person that recommends me Plant vs Zombies... uhmmmmm interesting, last year I tried the demo and I loved it, great simple game, I'll probably get it.

I totally forgot about Okami HD, one of my favorite PS2 titles.
Decisions, decisions...

No but why should we have to pay twice for the "same" digital content. Is that asking too much from Sony or M$(if they follow suit)?

Because older titles require some investment on Sony & MS's part to port to new hardware. They're simply passing those costs on to the consumer.

The other option is to include a Cell processor on the PS4 motherboard to avoid the need to port legacy titles, in which case you'd probably be looking at an additional $100 on the PS4's price. One way or another you're going to pay for the ability to play those older games.

You and everyone else defending Sony on this front are missing the larger point. They made a huge technical oversight. Rather, they gambled at the beginning of this gen and it didn't work out. I wasn't expecting them to magically "fix" it, but it would've been nice to have more concrete plans than "yeah...uh...gakai might do this in the future".

Without backward compatibility, this currently positions them to have the weakest ecosystem of the big three (yes, even compared to Nintendo). There's no reason I should have to repurchase the likes of UNO or Plants Vs. Zombies. This is less about having my entire PS3 catalog available to me (although that'd be ideal), and more to do with the fact that hundreds of dollars in software I own is now locked to a console nearing obsolescence.

At this point, the next console generational leap will likely be the most negligible we've ever seen. And for the first time in the Playstation lineage, the disc format will remain the same. Even Sony is stressing how seamless of an experience they want to make transitioning from one device to the next. This is no longer about blowing away prior iterations of hardware, but rather integrating it all into one nice, big platform.

I'm guessing that PS Plus will somehow morph into free Gaikai games streaming.

This is my question/concern as well. I can't see any publisher wanting their new full retails games for PS4 to be free out of the gate.

My guess is the current PS+ structure isn't going to be the same for PS4, but we probably won't know anything further until E3 (hopefully).

I'm probably not going to extend my PS+ past 2015 date that it's good for now until Sony addresses PS+ on PS4.

You all clearly missed this.... There's another thread for all this. Please stop cluttering up this one. I know I was guilty too... but I didn't know about the other thread. And now you all do too.
