Nice, so I wonder if the new dlc has 10 silver trophies since it's 2 dollars. XD

I just played Sound Shapes last week and loved it so I bought the current dlc even though beat school is my least favorite mode.
Those PSone RPGs are all untranslated right? The price is certainly cheap, but does anyone actually buy a game where they don't understand anything that's happening?
Yeah same here although they could have clarified the No English point a little better I think.

They look interesting but I'd just be putting random buttons.

Every single game has screenshots prominently featuring Japanese text, a cover image with Japanese text, and a full paragraph detailing just how much Japanese text is involved in playing the game. How do you look at that and say that it's not clarified?

Look I know people in this thread love to rip people a new one for not knowing things but people aren't born knowing things. You learn. And yes I checked and I figured out it was probably untranslated Japanese but a little more clarity right from the get go would have been nice and wouldn't have been hard to do.

I have seen cases before where games used Japanese screenshots to sell English versions of the games because they just hadn't gotten around to taking English screenshots or whatever reason. There are even some games up on Google Play that do this so while it's silly on the part of those trying to properly market the game it's not entirely unheard of either. I've also seen games where you can switch the language between Japanese and English. It's not that common but again not completely unheard of either.

I'm sorry if people get butthurt by my saying a little bit more clarity would have been helpful to me or think it's hand holding but in my opinion more information and clarity at the beginning is not a bad thing, especially with a long blog post.
Indeed. It's been free for PS+ and on sale plenty of times, but if anyone has somehow still missed it, I'd definitely recommend picking it up.

As for the sales ending today, I did buy Sumioni. There's definitely some potential for regret, so I guess I'll find out. And based on the discussion here the other day about Big Sky Infinity, as well as Frisky's video, I decided to re-try the demo. I still can't say that I "loved" it, but I enjoyed it much more than I did the first time. I decided to buy Big Sky instead of Sine Mora, which I already own on the 360.

This week Rayman (Vita) and I Am Alive are both definite buys.
please post your thoughts on sumioni when you're able, there's a mysterious lack of info on that title (other than some tepid reviews from major outlets). and I like the request/giving of recommendations on games, I use this thread for that a lot. keep asking.

I'm actually enjoying Big Sky more than Sine Mora - it has that jetpack joyride feel with the randomness and linearity. I'm really glad I picked up both, they both fill different niches for me.

After today I'll be about $102 in for the promo which is waaaay more than I normally spend on psn. So good job Sony.

Sony is digging a lot more money out of my wallet this time too along with the spend 50 get 10 and the 10 dollars I got free last month. I'm around $70 right now heavily debating on trying to reach $100. I Am Alive and Lumines are a maybe for me this week.

Totally agree. I didn't pick up that these were all untranslated right away. Granted, I only perused the post, but you would initially assume they were in English since, ya know, they are being released in America and most of those games are unplayable if you can't read the text, but whatever. I suspect of the people who buy these games, most will do so not knowing the games are Japanese only and will be totally pissed because of it.
The title says Ubisoft sale but when I load the first page and hit Ctrl + F and type in "Ubi" nothing comes up. This is why the PS3 deals page is not as good as the XBL one. Why even list "Ubisoft sale" if you're not going to show it specifically? I don't know what games they make.
How hard is it to go back a few pages? Or you could go look on the PSN blog. I doubt you could do anything nearly as in-depth and as well as Frisky does to maintain this and the thread on the PS3 board.

Well said. ;)
Has anyone played I Am Alive? If so, how is it?
There's an awful lot of tedious "rock wall climbing" gameplay, but if you like entertainments with post-apocalyptic settings, you'll get your money's worth. The game does not skimp on the bleakness.

Can anyone recommend Splinter Cell Essentials for old-school Splinter Cell stealth?

Just so you know, anything labeled as "PS1 Imports" are Japanese PS1 games that are brought over as is. Good publishers like MonkeyPaw Games provide guides and other helpful information to help people play and better understand the games.

Yeah, we should all be more tolerant of your refusal to fully read a blog post. Reading is pretty difficult and we shouldn't expect people to do so.

Sounds like it's time for us all to get some sweater vests on and have nice big group hug. Whaddaya say guys?:D

I really think they need to be far more upfront about pricing as well. A little more clarity than just a dollar sign and a number, and a couple of confirmation pages would go a long way, you know? Neon lights or something. I mean, I just downloaded 15 games and now I'm getting charged a couple hundred bucks. WTF SONY? Scamming people, charging us for stuff w/o barely even letting us know it's a store.
Uhh question: why hasn't the ps store been updated today?

Follow-up question: when will it be updated today?
Do you ask this question Every week?

Follow-up question: Do you have some kind of short term memory loss?

And since I'm feeling generous an answer. Noone knows x2

I really don't get how you couldn't understand that the Japanese Import games were in, well, Japanese.

Frisky was kind enough to copy and paste the entire blog post. (Which you should read if you're interested in the game)

And then it quite clearly states:
While the story contains a lot of Japanese text, the battle controls are pretty straightforward, and you should have little trouble conquering the world with your merry band!

Each game description has a mention of how much text (even for the card games! and Mahjong) the game contains. There's even a mention of using a Japanese to English dictionary.

Did you just look at the pictures?

finally got around to the big sky demo on ps3 to see if i should pick it up for my vita...

no wonder people are complaining -- even the demo is confusing. white 'star dust' that you need to pick up that looks similiar to some bullets, hard to decipher enemy shielding, and changing background/color schemes make it a mess.

which is a total shame, because it's quite evident they tried hard.

to those of you who have put a lot of time into it -- i realize putting time into a game often relieves these issues, but this seems particularly extreme. do you get a sense of what's what?

It lost me when they said the game is randomized. Granted, I'm not a huge shoot em up fan but I assume the way you master those games is through memorization. It's kinda hard to memorize what's completely random.

I haven't had any issues with mistaking one thing for another or the inviso-bullet problems, but I've only put an hour or two in. I can see how it might happen, but it just hasn't seemed terribly pervasive to me yet.

Does the demo not offer the tutorial?

my first game had yellow aliens on a yellow sun background.

the inviso-bullets were probably semi-visible if you knew what was going on, but i thought i was collecting stardust and collected death instead.

perhaps it really is just an issue of randomization combined with not quite enough color palate limitations on the randomizer. for reference, i'm not color blind and i can handle dodging a billion bullets in a dual stick or schmup... but this one's just not working for me.
Does the demo not offer the tutorial?
sure, but the tutorial only covers moving, shooting, drilling, spinning, and enemy shields, basically. it doesn't cover the color scheme issues, lol.

I've never played Big Sky but it depends on the game. Some shmups and aren't as hectic and are doable with just somewhat quick reflexes.
Wooot! These look awesome. And I think I actually know enough Japanese now to translate a screenshot without consulting a dictionary.. just started learning in August.

Damn good job. I always wished I knew how to read Japanese so I could import some great games but I know I'm too lazy to learn it. The Tales series in particular I would love to import.
It lost me when they said the game is randomized. Granted, I'm not a huge shoot em up fan but I assume the way you master those games is through memorization. It's kinda hard to memorize what's completely random.
i don't mind randomized dual stick shooters -- i mean, many of them are to various degrees (unlike schumps). but even in an eye melting neon dual stick shooter there is stark contrast between enemies, bullets, and safe space. i mean, you can't rely on memorizing patterns in a game like geometry wars, but that's fine. maybe i should give big sky another chance, because i really do want to throw my money at the genre to keep them coming... but that demo left me more confused than anything else.

Thanks. :) If you're like me and you mainly play games developed by Japanese developers, it makes sense to learn the language so that you can get the most out of your hobby. Don't let your laziness dissuade you. ;) If you or anyone else is looking to do so and wants some direction, PM me, as I have recommendations for great books and websites.

Hmm, you're making me seriously consider it now. I'll definitely be giving it some thought. I'll probably get back to ya later. Thanks for the offer!

Thank you for giving me an answer! I appreciate it!
finally got around to the big sky demo on ps3 to see if i should pick it up for my vita...

no wonder people are complaining -- even the demo is confusing. white 'star dust' that you need to pick up that looks similiar to some bullets, hard to decipher enemy shielding, and changing background/color schemes make it a mess.

which is a total shame, because it's quite evident they tried hard.

to those of you who have put a lot of time into it -- i realize putting time into a game often relieves these issues, but this seems particularly extreme. do you get a sense of what's what?
I've got ~30 hours into it and my answer is nope. You still randomly die to crap that's out of your control, taking damage from things you can't even see. The inverted color modes (particularly the one where it goes gray background and every enemy explodes into bullets) are basically guaranteed death if you're far on a run. It's pure insanity. Supposedly the new patch makes score gain easier, but added 3 new bosses so it's unknown how the King of the Skies trophy is affected (likely is much harder).

I played some Big Sky Infinity on Vita and didn't have a problem with seeing the starbits versus bullets. The bullets were much brighter than the starbits, which I could sort of understand blending in a bit with the background if you're not paying attention to them.

Today's early update sure made my decision on whether or not to buy Dokuro and Knytt Underground a whole lot easier. I've got enough to play on Vita that it isn't a huge deal, but Sony lost two potential sales by not having a consistent update schedule.

To me the background colors and especially the "gas planet" sections did really interfere with was on the screen, but even after a few runs of the trial I got quite a bit better. But to me, the starbits and the white enemy bullets do look very similar, but the bullets are a little bit bigger.

I think it's important to keep in mind how much luck plays into this game. In researching it last night, it reminded me a little bit of the Sound Shapes Death Mode, where sometimes you needed a generous setup from the get-go to ever have a chance. It sounds like a lot of the trophies follow this same set-up. I was encouraged to see there was a major patch to the game like AkairK mentioned, I always like to see developers support their games. And after my great experience with Sound Shapes Death Mode, I felt like this "luck" aspect of Big Sky may help me to enjoy it more and encourage replayability. That was my justification for dropping $4.89 on the game (even less if you take part in the spend $50, get $10 back promo).

EDIT: Haha all that was worthless. The game is already back to full price.

I missed Wild Arms and Patapon, didn't I. They still show up in the Vita Anniversary section, but they don't show up as free. Bummer.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I like it. I'd say it's very much worth it if you're a fan.

The douchebaggery on this thready is unbelievable sometimes. Anytime someone makes a semi-complaint or asks a simple question (just earlier talking about the import games not having English text, and now this guy just mentioning how he missed a sale at the last minute), people have to get on their case and try and make them look stupid. If you don't have anything to contribute other than snarkiness, just shut the fuck up!

Drawing attention to something is very different from trying to make something out to be a certain way. Though it often gets even more inflammatory response because that individual feels targeted and abused without realizing that nothing was actually done to them.

On topic: downloading the Darksiders demo now. Curious as to what it will allow access to. I've never tried a demo of a fighter before...

the issue is that they are just cluttering up the boards with their negativity in the first place. At least in the above case, it isn't sonys fault you didn't buy a game for 7 days when it was on sale. The updates have always been like this, there's no point in whining, just get used to it.

I just think people need to calm down in general lol. There is never any need for insults or name calling in this thread or any thread for that matter. The internet is not your bullying outlet because you can't get hit back.

A consistent update schedule would fix all of this and I honestly can't see a technical or business reason why they can't have a test server where they confirm all the deals are working, then have a script to push it live with someone overseeing to make sure it went off without a hitch. If it wasn't for the required Vita update that took near half an hour it wouldn't have been a problem either. These games have gone on sale enough though that I'm sure they'll be on sale again soon. Might as well grab the demos now since I'm in the store...
