Why, it's almost as if they showed the character in a tender moment to play against the grisly ass violence that would soon follow, while also dropping hints related to the story. The fact that the person Ellie shared that moment with was a woman is just sticking to canon.

I'd wager if you slightly change that scene to be a father/daughter dance sort of moment with Joel, there'd be a lot less bitching.

Well the thing that started this whole conversation was someone saying that having Ellie as the protagonist was "trying way too hard to be progressive."
Yeah I know that already and my statement was completely in regards to that. Some people just don't like it when companies are try hards, hence why I gave my example on the completely opposite end of the spectrum. You just roll your eyes at it and go on. I don't really care what a company does with their property, it's a free country and they can make what they want and people can buy it if they want (and I am sure TLOU 2 will sell like hotcakes.) It's a beautiful thing.

And for the record the projection was strong there, I personally have no problem with what they are doing with TLOU 2, based on the story I think it makes total sense to have whats-her-face be the lead. But that doesn't mean I didn't find the trailer completely embarrassing with how heavy handed it was. But then again I've never been on the Naugty Dog train when it comes to story and characters, I think I hate everyone in all their games except Sully and Nate when they're together.

It's just that the outrage seems so selective that it becomes hard to believe that the 'upset' comes from a *particular* change and not because they think that change comes from an 'agenda'.
It's not as selective as you might think. It's just that the "offensive outrage" is what gets put all over the internet because that's what gets people who aren't invested to give a shit about those particular fandom tantrums.
Are there people genuinely offended for less than stellar reasons? Sure.
But I agree with affa that oftentimes OCD fans are painted in broad strokes.
Generalizing people because they (theoretically) generalize seems kind of hypocritical, don't you think?
This is less of a defense of that poster and more delving into a pet peeve of mine.

The only thing "completely embarrassing" is your take on what is supposed to be a touching moment in a videogame.

To get back on topic, I need a cheapo game because of the $5 minimum (which I will forever decry as bullshit).
Should I get Knowledge is Power ($3), MX ATV Supercross Encore ($3) or Killzone PS4 ($4)? I would get Killzone but ever since Knack finally got added to Plus after I bought it, it seems inevitable that it'll be added.

Thanks.

ok.. i see the other guys point about the "trying way too hard to be progressive“ point.

And i have to say i see the other side as well. And both have valid points.

Nutshell: lesbian/gay/trans/whatever population of the worlds total population is a very small portion... a few years ago it was something like a total of less than 3%
And it does seem like everytime you turn around, they are being promanantly displayed to everyone. Movies/tv/games/you name it.

I dont care if they are in them... but when every new show/movie/game seems like they are showing they are all inclusive... it tends to seem very obvious they are trying to show they are, and not naturaly.

Thats his point. They go out of their way when they dont need to do so. It does get to be a little obvious at times.

Flip side, it really doesnt matter.
Some people will point out that if you notice they seem to be pandering... you are sexist/bigoted/homophobe/mean/whatever.
Thats affas point.

I dont care if the main character is a lesbian...
Yes the ass/boob shaking crap is a little obvious as well, and yes it gets old. Fairly quick.

Make the games story good, gameplay good, quit focusing on the characters sex life..

Edit: Trying to speed write this at work when i have zero time.. so i reserve the right to forget something... mess my wording up, and come back later tonight to add more.

Just got a 15% code from Sony rewards so I'm going to pick up monster hunter, Danganronpa, Batman return to Arkham, and probably star wars battlefront. Debating on persona 5 and rise of the tomb raider.

I thought the trailer was quite moving as well. The first game is still in my backlog, but after seeing this I'm putting it into my play list.

It was a great contrast between her everyday life and the brutality that followed.

So it's like 100% chance for a flash sale tomorrow right?

To get back on topic, I need a cheapo game because of the $5 minimum (which I will forever decry as bullshit).
Should I get Knowledge is Power ($3), MX ATV Supercross Encore ($3) or Killzone PS4 ($4)? I would get Killzone but ever since Knack finally got added to Plus after I bought it, it seems inevitable that it'll be added.

Thanks.
I can't speak for the quality of those games, but just for the record, you know you don't actually have to buy anything else if you don't want to? There's a $5 minimum for adding money, but you could just buy what you want and leave the remainder in your account.

If you actually wanted to get one of those, then nevermind.

I got an email from Sony Rewards that said that registering a Sony DVD or Blu-Ray if you've never registered one will net you 500 bonus points if it's done between 6/15 and 7/16. Good if you need points to qualify for a $10 PSN code which I believe is 1000 points.

I just happen to have the Spider-Man: Homecoming Blu-Ray around here somewhere.

I feel like I don't buy games on PSN that often so I feel dumb just having a leftover balance and it's a convenient excuse to buy another game.
Those were the 3 cheap ones that I didn't have already that sounded interesting.

I guess I'm more looking for a recommendation for any of the 3. If no one can recommend any of them then I won't buy any.

You completely missed affa's point which is why this argument is always so dumb. Next to no one cares that there is a lesbian female lead in some video game, what bugs people is the incredibly obvious pandering they're doing so they can point their nose in the air and talk about how amazing and progressive they are.

It's no different than something like Project X Zone (which I was playing a lot recently so it came to mind first) when you do a special attack with female characters the camera always pans to their ass and then works its way up to their chest. It's blatant pandering (in this case to a different demographic) that you have to roll your eyes at because of how obvious it is. I feel no different about that than I do the Last of Us 2 trailer, it's slightly embarrassing frankly.
just because morrigan flaunts her rocking bod doesn't make it a bad thing.

I fail to see how inclusion=pandering. Was Bioware pandering because you could romance same sex characters? Seemed like all the homophobic white males hated that feature, a feature that rewards dozens of hours of relationship building.

Next time in a sequel to a game where character is known to have had a girlfriend, they shouldn't have a romantic option, so you don't get offended that gays exist

Having a gay character, so what. Not pandering.

Having a gay character and telling the world they are gay, promoting it as gay friendly, asking everyone if they know their main character is gay=that is pandering.

Its not just gay characters... thats just the topic right now.
Name the minority, they have had the same treatment.

Just look how disney has ruined star wars... its not the female leads. Its the pandering.

I'm not sure I'd call it pandering. Pandering would assume that girls and gays are going to buy the game just because of the inclusion, when in reality that particular demographic is relatively insignificant compared to others. It's really just corporate virtue signalling. To flaunt your progressive ideals in your products so the industry can point to it as a symbol of good in a dark world.

It's seemingly neverending these days. Battlefield's going through the same thing, but that game's core demographic is hardly as tolerant as the ones willing to play a shitty movie masquerading as a game.

I did NOT mention a single game.... It was just a general comment.

So it's kinda easy to see how when one game/movie/tv/whatever is prominently promoting themselves as being all inclusive etc, and some random game is made that just happens to have a gay character.. they get lumped into the argument. Regardless if they meant to or not, they get seen as pandering etc.

Is it right? no, but when so many are doing it on purpose... things get lumped together.

And yes, pandering and virtue signaling are kinda getting combined here i guess.

I guess the question I have is that why did they make the trailer about two girls kissing if there is not some agenda with it or if they were not trying to use the "gay" angle to get extra attention for their game. I'm not aware of many other video game trailers that prominently feature a man and a woman dancing and kissing like that. This isn't a game about romance is it? Also, Naughty Dog already did a girls kissing scene previously with the same character, so to do it again here is not introducing us to anything new. So are they exploiting the kissing for publicity, sales, and/or agenda purposes?
The point of the dance stuff and romance is that Ellie says she's not a threat while her partner tells her that every guy should be terrified of her as the trailer transitions to a horrifically violent sequence where she sees a man being hung and gutted with their intestines hanging from his stomach before shooting dudes and women with a bow, stabbing many throats, and trying her damnedest to slice a guy's head off. It's about the contrast of those two aspects of a post-apocalypse life when the same person that tries to be normal also has to be a violent killer to really survive. It's about the characters having a sweet moment, which very few other games could get away with that as a major part of their E3 trailer due to most other devs not being able to pull it off with the same level of execution as Naughty Dog.

For whatever reason, the Sony press conference was being streamed on Disney XD and they censored out the kiss, but not the extreme violence in The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima. We're still at a point in this society where a simple kiss is more offensive to people and the media than disemboweling and other feats of extremely graphic violence, so better representation of the former can help balance out with the latter so people might be less puritanical about this sort of thing.

The other part of Ellie being gay is that representation matters in media and the scale between straight romance to LBGT romance is basically tipped way in straight romance's favor for a very long time and for the foreseeable future. One game here and there doesn't fix that for those that don't often get to see people like them represented in games, especially those that aren't just free-form open world games where the player's character can be whatever you want as long as the developers actually built in that freedom. Seeing Ellie as at least leaning towards being gay in the first game, confirmed in the expansion, and be front and center in the sequel since she's the main protagonist while also kicking ass like Joel is a big deal for LGBT people to see there not be a stereotype/exploitative like Fear Effect.

That's really an occurrence in American society primarily. Sexuality isn't seen as taboo in other countries. It might be a skewed worldview, but it's largely based on religious upbringing. A video game isn't going to change the minds of people. It's just going to appease the few who want representation through toys and whatever they're watching on TV. Their numbers aren't what make video games the cashcow that it is, it's the other 90% of the gaming population. They might be the ones who whine the loudest on social media, but when it comes to sales, it's not viable to cater to the wants of a minority if your priority is to make money.

Sony can afford to promote themselves like this because they are already far ahead in sales. They've got people's money already, so if they want to pretend like they care about social issues they'll do it through big events like this for clickbait whore media outlets who get to spend the next few weeks blogging about the importance of some lesbian kiss cutscene. If people say anything negative about it then they get to paint them as evil cis gendered nazis for retweets.

It's just the world we live in. The only winning move in this game is to just not play.

It is all part of a long term plan to increase the percentage of women and LGBTQ gamers. If the percentage of those 2 groups combined is the 10-20% that is being thrown around in this forum those are dramatically underrepresented groups among gamers. It is clearly in Sony/EA/everyone in gaming's best interest to draw more women and queer people in. Like I said above it doesn't seem like the goal is to push an agenda, it is just marketing.

Because the vast majority, you know the ones out there actually living their lives and fighting for their rights instead of whining on Tumblr about Star Wars not having enough pansexual Asain genderfluid Eskimo POCs, SO. GIVE. A. DAMN.

I genuinely can't believe people give a shit about this.

If it's pandering it's pandering and however many dozens of non-straight people on the naughty dog staff are sick to their stomachs right now but otherwise that's life, buy it or don't.

If it's virtue signaling then you lose your rugged straight man protagonist for your rugged straight man game but if it's mildly believeable then some other people might get to feel like a part of the world for just a little while and that's a pretty fair trade.

If it's a genuine heartfelt decision from people working on the game that it was worth being part of the story then they did what they thought was right and that's just fine, especially since it's theirs to make.

If literally no one working on the game noticed that the protagonist is gay then they staffed almost exclusively from some alternate universe where people aren't jackasses in which case they should probably go back before they realized how they fucked up coming here.

It's definitely not just an american thing. Steven universe aired uncensored in north america for certain romantic scenes where as in europe it was well known they censored out a number of things. Granted steven universe cheats/circumvents it by gem aliens being genderless with the exception of rose.

I would say the censorship is more a disney thing if anything. I am surprised they would show the other content they did though considering they picked up naruto then cancelled it due to how badly they would have to edit it once it got to the swearing decapitated head that likes to worship satan arc. aka hidan and kakuzu.

Ah who knows covered it for me so I was correct that they were just censoring the violent graphic content. As expected.

Pretty sure they were censoring the violence, not the kiss, Reasoning being they did show the kiss, but did some weird editing to try and censor the violence. The "Disney XD censored the kiss!" is a poor attempt to create false controversy over something that didn't actually happen.

“The Disney XD policy does not allow for gratuitous violence in programming that children may be viewing,” the spokesperson said. “During the channel’s General Audience, DX|P-branded programming from the E3 gaming conference yesterday, telecast editors omitted content that did not meet our policy standards, including several seconds of an animated video game scene that began with a kiss, but ended with a knife attack in which a character’s throat was slashed. Only the latter, violent portion of the scene was not televised from the event.”

I didn't pay attention to the gender politics discussion, so I might have missed someone posting the news about the new "Download" feature for PlayStation Now, which currently doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone here subscribe to that service? I'd want to tinker around and see what else was added. That would be exciting for PlayStation to have their own Game Pass-like service, only with 600+ games instead of 100+. It could theoretically also mean PS Now will be introduced to new countries sans a streaming option. Exciting.

I don't think any pandering happens with tlou 2 at all either. But clearly pandering does happen, and corporations are particularly guilty of it... Or at least it is very evident when they start doing it because they all start piling on the same thing. It happens with pretty much everything, for example when being Green Recycling was really becoming in Vogue.

I'm sure some people fear inclusion. I think more people are just fed up with our current culture, in every direction.

Can I just say that I didn't think there were a lot of quests to earn things for E3?

I remember the last two times they had an event, there were a lot more.

Heck, twice we got 20% off codes for watching a video in the past two months.

Now we got....well, nothing super great.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering?

Anoyone saying there isn’t blatant pandering going on isn’t paying attention.

Tech industries like game companies tend to be heavily progressive and they like to push the social agenda.

I don’t care myself but it’s often so heavy handed and over the top that I get sick of it.
