So...Total Recoil is alright. Only problem I have with it is since I'm playing without wifi, I gotta wait like a minute for the upgrade store to load (even if I'm buying stuff with in game coins). I assume I can fix it by just disabling any network connections, but I'll see.

I guess I don't get why Namco would be a bad play for Atlus. They're fairly small in the scope of big publishers and I don't recall hearing about them shutting down studios all of the time. They could just have them as another wing of the publisher like D3 that operates on its own, though I could be wrong about that aspect of their business. I don't see Sony or Nintendo outright buying them.

It would be cool if an Xseed or Nippon Ichi (NISA) or one of those small localization publishers could scrounge up the money to get them since they seem to be stable enough to just let Atlus do its own thing. They'd get the business that Atlus got along with more original properties and such to expand a bit.

I was kind of thinking of Xseed or NISA too since they are all similar companies and Atlus even published at least one Disgaea game. Then again, same with Sega and Shiren the Wanderer. Either way, Atlus published a lot of quality games, but their developed games are their biggest games (aside from Catherine?) so I don't see them disappearing completely. Assuming any of this happens in the first place. I just want to see more of their games back on Sony consoles since I don't own a 3DS.
I think Sony or Nintendo benefits from owning them strictly from an exclusives perspective. Atlus is not a game changer in the grand scheme of things but they appear to be a well run company that serves a small but growing niche market. Exclusives at this point have become a numbers game. Everyone loves to tout more exclusives.

New Ratchet and Clank??

when-worlds-collide-tease_large.jpg

can't lie, the reviews of SMT 4 are making me think about grabbing one.
Yeah. The continued releases of Etrian Odyssey really tempt me too. Plus the other Atlus published game that is a beat 'em up, Code of Princess? Not sure if that's the one I am thinking of but one of those. Good thing is that if I buy a 3DS, I already own a game for it. I bought Pilotwings from a BB sale for $5 sometime last year.

That's true and I know it helps influence the sale of specific consoles for a large majority of people. Not saying I want Sony to buy them, though. I kind of hate exclusives. The games themselves are good, but I'm getting to the point where I don't get much enjoyment out of buying 3 or more consoles every generation just to play a couple of specific games to each platform. Microsoft burned me so bad last year, too, that I'm glad they don't have anything that is incredibly interesting to me. What they do have might always go to PC at some point, too.

i work weekends, and have my kids till wednesday afternoon. so as soon as they leave my weekend begins. and im on eastern, so i was drinking around 4pm to start. anyway.

barely got into lego batman before i sold it, i wanted to like it but their company really sucked the fun out of legos with all the franchise sucking. i miss castle, pirate and space legos. didnt have to tuck any special movie title names or characters into the mix.

woulda been awesome if they made a game about the old legos, but they only do things to sell more shit they make now.

im sure i would feel the same toward pirates of the caribbean as i did to batman and harry potter, but i dont know.

It actually resembles a Rift Gate. Comparing these two pictures makes me positive that it is indeed Jak 4.
Rift_Gate.jpg

Ratchet vs. Jak vs. Clank vs. Daxter confirmed.

More likely it will be someone like Namco Bandai or Square-enix which swoops in, gobbles them up, and digests them into slurry.
It is a freaking scary thought to think of EA or UBI snatching them up (at least Activision is struggling too much outside of COD to be acquiring people). I wonder if Paradox has enough money laying around and any interest in getting into the console space. That could just be a crazy wet dream since they're the two publishers that are willing to put out wacky crazy things that become wildly successful like feudal heritage simulators. Xseed, or whatever they changed their name to not that long ago, would be interesting but I doubt any backers they have are that deep pocketed. That is a beyond small company, I think they have like 12 employees if I remember right, because all they do is translate and market games that wouldn't make it here otherwise.

Resisting buying games I'd most likely never play, the only thing I picked up this week was Trine 2. As someone mentioned before, I'd love to see a Xseed sale as well.

Debating whether to get Gungnir or Growlanser or....both. Little help?
Both?

From what i understand, Gungnir is basically a srpg with Sting sensibilities (riveria, yggdra, etc)

Growlanser is also sort of a srpg, though heavy on story like a regular jrpg. if i understand the reviews correctly, it's extremely heavy on text (especially at the beginning) but once battles start it's quite good. real time, i think, with an emphasis on spells.

both come highly recommended from the multiple review sources i've read up on. (i've already played some sting games, so know i will adore gungnir). the text heavyness of growlanser scares me because i hate that shit.

REVIEW - TOTAL RECOIL / VITA

This is a fun, dirt cheap time killer.

It plays exactly like what it is -- an IOS style dual stick shooter. There is even IAP in the game, though because it's on a vita and you pay upfront, money is prevalent and there doesn't seem to be any real reason to buy any unless you want to speed up the game, which would defeat the purpose of a time killer.

Basic mechanics are arcade-y dual stick shooter-ness. This isn't a Geometry Wars or Robotron or even Dead Nation... it's more like Commando or a low-rent Smash TV.

Each level is done in 'waves' then a mini-boss. If you don't complete a wave in time, you can still beat the mission but you don't get access to the next wave. Before/during/after the waves you can destroy tons of crates for monies. A lot of weapons to upgrade.

Again, this is basically a 'competent' dual stick shooter experience of the kind you might get on IOS, but considerably better since you actually get dual sticks. It will not set the world on fire, but if you're into the genre it's worth the 2 bucks as a time killer. Don't expect an amazing game, just expect something decent (sort of the same quality zone Nuns Attack was).

REMINDER

buy Tokyo Jungle mobile. Support this game so we get more. We need odd Sony franchises like this to thrive so they continue to take chances (and make more TJ).

So nobody can grasp that one sale can objectively be better than another?
SMH at your posts. All things being equal, yes, one sale can be better. If two stores are equidistant, and have the same item at different discounts, one sale is objectively better. As soon as you change any factor - especially the items on sale - then it becomes completely subjective. ten bad games at 90% off might be better or worse than three AAA games at 25% off, it completely depends on subjective opinion.

Got it! Thanks! I was mainly looking at the online store, I don't understand why they don't have it connected to the main PSN but whatever.

I thought there would be a lot more excitement here after the $30 new Ratchet and Clank announcement but I see the console digital sale war apparently won't die. :p Way to repeatedly beat something to death.

That'll most likely be a day 1 purchase for me if I enjoy the other games which I most likely will. I love to support devs that differ from the retail pricing model and reward them for it if the game is great.

I'll repeatedly beat you to death! ;)

I didn't catch that it was going to be $30 so that's exciting. Hopefully it's better than the last couple.

No innuendo in the title...
Huh? lol I may be tired after a long work day but I don't get it.

As long as it's done slowly with a big foam bat. :D

@MonkeyDrummer You just made me shudder at the mere mention of a Gamefaqs thread...

EDIT: I get it now Breakfuss just ignore me haha. Probably time for bed soon it seems.

I like when devs try different things, but I don't think Insomniac has had the best track record with budget price games. Quest for Booty and Full Frontal Assault are probably two of the lower ranking games on most R&C fan's lists.

But I'm happy to see them going back to the core R&C style of gameplay. I feel like the title could use a bit more innuendo though. (EDIT: Ninja's by breakfuss on that last point)
They're making a classic-style Ratchet & Clank game, so that's not really trying something different. Quest for Booty was a great game with the only issue being that it was short and didn't have the replayability that the other mainline games had.

Enough with the arguing and insults.  Keep the discussion on topic, please.

Well, I'm going to go ahead and salvage my points, even though they were deleted just because of the conversation framework.

Paraphrasing: "New PS3 owner, digital sales on PoP HD and R&C HD got me to buy something I wouldn't normally pick up because the discount over retail is what digital distribution could be. Competition between the two biggies over digital sales is good for us....blah blah blah.....any more good Summer Deals coming after this week?"

Aaaand there's the mod bomb lol. We all knew that had to be coming after all that crap :p

And damnit I watched the trailer already. Trying to erase it out of my mind so the ending isn't ruined too much. Hopefully by the time I finally get to Crack in Time I'll forget about whatever happened in that trailer lol. Well I'm off for the night before I fall asleep on my desk. Night all.

Sorry. Just telling it like it is. It bums me out when things get like that around here. I'd like to think this place is, generally, a really nice place to discuss things and why I keep coming back.

Getting the Lego games.
Is war in the north just mindless hack and slash? Decent gameplay? Story? Level ups?

Thought about Alice and star wars. They're cheap but I don't need more games I won't play.

Two worlds II was $5 months ago and I haven't touched it.

i wish you were a bit more careful. you deleted a post of mine i spent some time on that not only answered some asked questions but reviewed a new release.

EDIT. whoops. meant this to be a pm.

After looking at the last 7 pages I'm probably getting Crimson Gem Saga, on the fence with Badass Rumble, and have been talked out of Knights in the Nightmare. It'd be the 1st digital handheld game I've bought iOS notwithstanding, and it's not for lack of owning handhelds, completely a DRM thing.

I just keep playing Tokyo Jungle Mobile. Spent $40 on other stuff during this sale but it's going to be this weird $3 game that I end up playing the most out of it... It's seriously good though and I highly recommend it. Best way I can think to describe it is a tile based real time rogue-like, with animals, in an abandoned Tokyo.

any more good Summer Deals coming after this week?"
There's sales every week but this "Summer Blast" sale was scheduled for this week and last so probably nothing crazy like this in the immediate future.

Was pondering getting the Tokyo Jungle Mobile game but the above post convinces me along with few others. I liked the PSN game so hopefully this one is awesome as well. :)

I haven't played the PS3 version and it's definitely not a direct port but it certainly seems to capture the spirit of the PS3 version. I'm also a sucker for weird rogue-likes.

Does anyone recommend New Little King's Story? I really don't like risking more than $10 on digital downloads.
i played the original version on wii and really liked it for a bit, though i never got around to finishing it. i think this one is supposed to be somewhat improved?

it's got a lot of great concepts, but not all of them perfectly executed. like, you have these followers and formations and such... but getting your team to do exactly what you want was more problematic than it should have been. but it wasn't broken bad or anything like that, just not quite as tactical as i wanted it to be.

for reference, i want it on vita even though i've already played it, so there's that.

I had the same reaction to Knights in the Nightmare, but for the PSP. I love srpgs, and after reading all good things about it, I was looking forward to playing the game. But try and try, I just couldn't continue playing it. I came back to it twice more, and the end result was the same for me. I'm glad others like that game. I thought the art direction was good.

Just got Knights in the Nightmare from Gamefly for 3DS. 30 mins was all it took for me to realize the game is not for me.

So to any players new to Alice, how is it? I meant to try it when it came out but never got around to it. For $4 I figure why not, right?

What games is it pretty similar to gameplay-wise?
