I'd like to know the general opinion of buying an anime series on Blu Ray that you already own on DVD. I realize that every set is a case by case decision, but I meant in a more general sense. I've seen a couple now (FMP sets, Soul Eater, Champloo) on this sale that keep staring at me every time anybody has an anime sale.

Given the choice between buying an anime I don't already own on Blu Ray or DVD, I will almost always buy the Blu Ray (Why didn't the Cowboy Bebop movie have 5.1 audio?!). I just can't imagine that I'd enjoy any anime on Blu Ray enough that I would want to buy it again and replace/store the DVDs.
I think Yu Yu Hakusho was the only one I made the exception for, but it's clearly remastered. Another small reason would be storage space, and the scratch resistance of blurays.

I did replace my Soul Eater dvds with blurays, because I made a few bucks selling my dvds, and it's two small volumes instead of four.
If anyone's looking for an introduction into visual novels, the fourth hentai game bundle would be a good start. I haven't played X-Change 2 yet (I own it, but I need to play the first X-Change first), but Yume Miru Kusuri and Snow Sakura are great.
X-Change is much better than 2. I didn't even bother finishing 2.
Tears to Tiara is a pretty good fantasy show. The thing I enjoyed most about it is its amalgamation of several different mythologies and legends. It's similar to Utawarerumono, if you want a point of comparison.
I went on Amazon and read the reviews there. I think I'm sold on use of Welsh and Gaelic mythology. I have friends who would be interested in that aspect of things (as long as they don't screw it up. The Japanese have this habit of borrowing mythology and doing strange things with it. I have friends who after all these years can't get over Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight.)

Today's deals are certainly better than the previous few, I'm not really sure on what to get. I kind of want the Soul Eater set, but seeing what's happened with other two-volume Funi blu releases like Casshern, it might be best to wait for the inevitable repackage. I'll probably be able to get them at $30 within the next year.

I didn't even know that Taisho Baseball Girls got a release here. It's a cute series, I just don't know that I feel the desire to ever watch it again.

My Bride is a Mermaid seems like a good deal at $30. I almost paid more than that for used copies a while back but fortunately resisted. I'm leaning toward picking this one up.

I also didn't realize there were two different versions of Blue Drop. Why was it rereleased with a dub? That's unusual for any company, much less Sentai. I might get the cheap sub-only version just for the hell of it.

Day 10:

I can't decide on Soul Eater either. This is definitely the cheapest I've seen for the two sets. Ugh, I just dunno!
Wow, Kirin giving real advice sans bashing. Never thought I'd see the day =P
I more surprised he liked witchblade! I watched it on IFC, but never saw the last couple of episodes. It was decent, but it is not top shelf by any means.

Not likely to happen - Casshern is half the length of Soul Eater. Each of those Soul Eater Blu-ray sets is already combining two DVD collections.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that Soul Eater is a stylistic, well-animated, exceedingly average show.

I really enjoyed the first half-or-so of Soul Eater. It's really fun. Stupid, but fun.

But OH MY GOD was the last chunk of it one of the worst things.

Yeah, I'm watching it on Netflix, and while I enjoy it, I don't feel the need to own it.

Seconded.
Seconded.
I think we all agree.
Today's deal is up. Any thoughts on Tears To Tiara?
I just ordered it. Razzuel told me before it was pretty good. I was hoping for a deal on Utawarerumono also.

I just ordered Tears to Tiara and Tsubasa OVA Collection.

Were the Soul Eater blu-ray volumes ever release in individual volumes of 1-4 or were the Meister/Weapon Collections the first release? I see the collections listed as "Part 1&2"/"3&4" on various sites but can't find any that are just Part 1/2/3/4. Are they only referred to this way because of how the DVD volumes were split up?

The Meister/Weapon Collections are the only release of Soul Eater on blu-ray. It's likely that they are called 1&2, 3&4 for the reason you mentioned.
Great. Their packages are packed well, and the economy shipping is pretty fast for "economy" shipping — I usually get an order four days after it ships.
Awesome. I was worried that I wouldn't get them if I shipped them to my job before we go on break.

Thanks for the feedback on Tears to Tiara and Special A. I'll pass on the latter and try out the former through my library to decide if it'd be worth getting. :D

I was wanting to buy it on Amazon for $52, but I had a feeling it would appear one day on RightStuf on sale. Thankfully I got lucky and it did. :D Unfortunately, spending more than I should (I spent around $300 on this sale alone).

I know how you feel, these deals have been great and on alot of stuff Ive been meaning to buy like the samurai champloo blu and Mnemosyne Blu

I ended up getting Champloo, and the Highschool of the dead bluray and hardback manga compilation.

Highschool of the Dead is one of those guilty pleasures thats just so much fun to watch. Can't wait for the 2nd season.

Hell yeah!

I'm torn on Soul Eater for all the reasons previously mentioned. The end was so lame it almost ruined the enitre show. I will wait til next xmas where we'll likely see a single box with all of it contained within (or a similar cheapo price).

I thought Tears to Tiara was average. My memory is a bit hazy, but if I recall, Utawarerumono was a better show.

Woah I didn't even notice Seto no Hanayome was up there. I can never recognize it by it's translated name. Totally picking that up. It's too bad the OVAs don't appear to be included (at least according to the description).

HoTD was excellent (for what it is) and I picked up. I totally forgot that there should be a 2nd season. Should've waited, meh! Those Sentai guys never bring their prices down though which is frustrating. Ah well.

Edit: Bwahaha that video is too funny! It's that kind of self-deprecating humor the show has that I loved. They know they have to have the over-sized boob women in a zombie show and they mess with it all the time. Love it.
I thought Tears to Tiara was average. My memory is a bit hazy, but if I recall, Utawarerumono was a better show.
Yeah, I liked Utawarerumono better too, but Tears to Tiara was still pretty good.

How do the impossible matrix boobs count as self-deprecating humor? That scene isn't even supposed to be funny. All the breasts and panties in that show are about being provocative. I would understand if you thought it was funny because it's so dumb, but I just end up heaving a large sigh whenever I see it.

Agreed but this scene might be more of what he was talking about:

I dont know about being provactive with that clip. They have a mix of provactive with ridiculous. I just assumed the ridiculous was there to poke fun of the stereotypes. So yeah, I'm laughing because it's dumb/ridiculous. I sigh when they do it as if it's supposed to be provactive and it's epic fail.

Chance Pop Session Complete Collection's cover makes it look like a porno. WTF? It's basically an idol show for young girls! Seen it myself, it's cute, but there's NO fanservice or sexuality like that ridiculous cover implies.

High School of the Dead... wow. I watched the first episode on Hulu, what a piece of crap. The amount of fanservice was insulting.

Anyone seen Taisho Baseball Girls? My husband bought the PSP game on our honeymoon, but he hasn't seen the animu.

I'm not going to pretend that I don't enjoy the occasional fanservice anime, but HotD wasn't one of them. It wasn't so much the high number of service scenes that repulsed me so much as it was the fact that everyone except the pink-haired girl had giant inhuman hideous cow tits. Come on, Japan, at least have some aesthetic sensibilities sometimes. I wanted to puke whenever the school nurse was on screen.

The series is still worth owning for the action, but I wouldn't pay above $20 for the blu-ray.
The Meister/Weapon Collections are the only release of Soul Eater on blu-ray. It's likely that they are called 1&2, 3&4 for the reason you mentioned.
Thanks. Well then, I suppose that regardless of the number of episodes per volume, if the Soul Eater and Casshern blu volumes originally had roughly the same MSRP, a reasonably-priced repackage containing the entire series isn't entirely out of the question in the future. I'll wait on Soul Eater and just kick myself if I never see it cheaper, I guess.
I thought Tears to Tiara was average. My memory is a bit hazy, but if I recall, Utawarerumono was a better show.
Well, that's unfortunate news. I found Utawarerumono near-unwatchable, it was so bad.

does anyone know if the Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne dubbing was any good? I thought the show was pretty good but I was also considering casshern sins by the recomendations. It's also the cheapest I've seen it and I cant even find it on amazon so I am wondering if its even still in print.

I didn't mind the dub, but I felt like the show just went for "shock value", if you will, over actually being good.

Despite the last few episodes, I still really liked Soul Eater in the end. Not one of my top 10 favorites, but still loved it.

I keep considering Highschool of the Dead, but I really don't see myself liking it much. A girl I use to go out with loved it though.

I agree on all accounts.

That Chance Pop Session alternate cover is the most deceiving cover I know of, along with this Princess Tutu one. And I love both of those shows.

And I only gave High School of the Dead a shot because it has zombies, but it was just so blatantly crass.

I didn't have a problem with any of the characters' breast sizes, except for Shizuka. She was the worst; her cow udders were disgusting, and her stupidity was so very annoying.
Well, that's unfortunate news. I found Utawarerumono near-unwatchable, it was so bad.
I can't remember, but what didn't you like about Utawarerumono? Maybe I can assuage your fears of Tears to Tiara ending up the same way.

I thought the English dub was great; the two main leads, Colleen Clinkenbeard and Jamie Marchi, did a really good job as Rin and Mimi.

I watched the first two episodes on Netflix last night. So far, not to bad, tho the Irish accents are...interesting. (At least, I think it is supposed to be Irish...) At least it is somewhat different. I've been watching too many dubs lately and I've been recognising way too many voice actors...

Yeah I really enjoyed Rin and I watched the English dub. It was an interesting storyline and they definitely went above and beyond with the shock value, that's for sure. You will absolutely remember this show when you are done watching it lol.

They usually add more stuff since it's the 12+ days of Christmas, right? Don't want to start buying stuff just to have them add one or two things I might want later.

If anyone's looking for a good slice-of-life/drama, I recommend Living for the Day After Tomorrow from today's additions. It's pretty good; the only slight I have against it is that the ending was a little rushed, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Pretty much everything. The story itself was boring, the characters were unbearably obnoxious, it played out like a bad harem PC game (which I understand it started as) with each new female cast member finding a new retarded reason to fall for the bland male lead, and the ending was a glorious train wreck of awful ideas.

I agree with this.

I wish I'd known that Tenchi in Tokyo was going to be part of this sale earlier; I bought two individual volumes (5 and 6) as cart filler for the first sale order I placed. I was originally going to get the rest of them from Netflix, but they sent me vol 1 and it had a hole in the disc (in addition to the normal number of holes you'd expect a disc to have).

Rather than fight with them anymore, I just ordered the complete collection of the series this morning. Despite your warnings, I filled my cart with both volumes of Special A. I liked School Rumble, so I'll probably hate SA. :)

Is there a huge difference between the High School of the Dead Bluray version against the DVD version? I have never seen a huge difference IMO in terms of details (video) in anime or animated shows on Bluray vs DVD (and don't care for audio to much to base it on that alone).

I want to get HSotD, but wanted someones opinion if there is a remarkable difference on Bluray that justifies the extra $4. $4 is not much, but what I hate most if how SLOW Bluray discs are to load versus regular DVDs.
...but they sent me vol 1 and it had a hole in the disc (in addition to the normal number of holes you'd expect a disc to have).
My GF asked me for a bag without holes yesterday. I handed her a packing air pouch.

Yeah that Princess Tutu one is ridiculous too.

High School of the Dead should still be up on Hulu as far as I know, if anyone is on the fence about it. It's subbed too.

For HoTD, I've never seen the DVDs, but the Blu-ray quality is great. I'd go for the Blu's.

Yay Day 11 has Kobato! An average, but enjoyable show. I guess I'll pick up Seto, just noticed a new bundle pack will be available in January for $37. Only $7 higher than this "sale". I can easily imagine it dropped to $25 or so. I'll chalk up the difference in value to being able to watch it (again) before it goes on sale. Stupid Rightstuf is taking all my money.

Megazone 23 looks interesting, but my only exposure to it is in a Super Robot Wars game. I only see one or two things I really want to get, but I hope tomorrow's deals won't make me jump up and down like a fucking idiot.
