Both are amazing, though definitely not for everyone. In both games you start out with weapons that can't hit anything accurately. Once you get some decent weapons and realize you can't just run and gun the game gets better. Both have fantastic atmosphere. Just be prepared to die a lot, especially in Clear Sky.
Ennh, I really think the games couldn't figure out what they want to do. Yeah, you stop and pop every damn russian in the entire zone, and if you catch more than a single bullet you're probably down for the count, but the problem is that the sheer amount of people who will just shoot you on sight, at least in Stalker 1, is just absurd. Far Cry 2 had less annoying respawn times for its checkpoints than Stalker 1 did.
Since they insist on having "realistic" health levels while at the same time having Serious Sam quantities of bandits/military/mercs to fight, they work that out by giving you a ridiculous quantity of medkits. It is a cheap backdoor that they couldn't balance their game that you just end up popping a medkit every 20 seconds and quickloading any time you stick your head up a bit too far.
I mean, boil it down to brass tacks and it is only a few steps removed from Call of Duty or Halo. Only in Stalker you have to hit the quick medkit key to regenerate your health.
