Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Regardless of whether or not you own the games in question, the daily deals over the last week have been bloody awesome.
So true. I feel spoiled. :D

Didn't like Bastion. Quit halfway through out of boredom after that one loser ran off and I had to collect a bunch of different macguffins. It had a good sense of style but did not enthrall me.

I got a PS3 controller to work with Bastion. It makes it so much so much more enjoyable to play. Unfortunately, that makes passing on it much harder. Damn Steam always making me want to buy things :whistle2:(

It's probably too recent to hit 75% off in the winter sale, and even then it'd just be $1.24 less than what it is now.

I have Bastion on my wishlist, but I'm going to wait it out. There is zero chance of me playing it before the winter sale ends, and I doubt I'll do worse then.

So you can play Bastion with the 360 controller too I would think. Hmm $5 is a great deal but maybe I should just hold out it's not quite 75% off? Man what to do. Plus with all the XBLA points I have I might choose to go that route when it goes on sale. Awesome deal though!!!

Yes, you definitely can use a 360 controller. It's listed as controller enabled on Steam and I emulated my PS3 controller as one to get it to work.

Picked up Bastion since I doubt it will go lower during the Winter Sale. Not sure when I will play it to completion though since I am still addicted to Skyrim! :D

Yeah. I set my hold out for it at 75% off. It may be awhile but I have stuff to fill the time in between.

Check out my review for Bastion if you're on the fence ;)

I grabbed it for $7.50 earlier -- I think $5 is the right price though, wouldn't pay more.

Reading the Steam forums, it looks like Bastion is one of the plethora of games to have an achievement added recently, along with other games where the added achievement is decidedly winter-based. Ride the Wind - Use the Skyway in the Wharf District.

Not sure if this is a reason for or against buying it now. On one hand, getting holiday achievements ahead of time will give a leg up for the meta-game. On the other hand, it's practically guaranteed to have a daily deal.

What's the list of games with new achievements? Be interested to see how many of 'em I've already got.

Going back and forth on Bastion. Even though I doubt it would be in an Indie Pack, there have been so many of them lately that I'm still very hesitant to bite.

Unfortunately this is only a one day sale. If it wasn't then I would almost say wait because Humble Indie Bundle #4 is going to coming out as their next bundle and Humble has always seemed to have some of the bigger name indie games.

Yeah, guess I'll wait for the Holiday sale if it isn't in a Humble Bundle, Indie Royal, Indie Gala, *insert new bundle here*.

Bastion flatly isn't Indie (Well, in the independent since. In the "indie scene" sense why not?). It's been published by Warner Bros. You will NOT see it in a bundle.
Do we know when the Holiday sale likely to start?
As I said before, it won't be until after the current "event/sale", which is going to end this Sunday. With that said, the winter sale will probably start the next day, Monday. If not, some time that week for sure.

What makes you assume it ends this Sunday? Granted it's 10 prizes for 10 people - but this doesn't mean 10 days.

Man I'm incredibly tempted to get Bastion but considering my game backlog, it just doesn't make sense. I can't imagine this not dipping down to this price again during the Winter sale and it'll be practically forever until I get around to playing it. I haven't play, like, anything from the humble bundles. These Indie games just sit on my hard drive.

1 prize per day, 10 prizes for 10 people, do the math. Use your toes if you need to.

Maybe you like math, but it's the language arts that win out on this one.

Entries are open from 10:00 am Pacific Standard Time on December 1, 2011, to 10:00 am Pacific Standard Time on the date that Valve starts its 2011 Holiday Sale

...
Sponsor will select ten (10) winners from eligible entrants each Day by random drawing conducted within forty-eight (48) hours of the end of the applicable Day.

10 winners per day until the Holiday Sale starts. Nothing about 10 days or Sunday.

Reading: It's FUNdamental.

Lol... It doesn't say the number of days allotted, I knew that. It's common sense to see that it ends Sunday. However, we shall see, my fellow over-analytical CAGs. ;)

I dunno about you, but I see "10 people win 10 games each day starting Dec. 1". Nothing about "until the Holiday Sale starts". ;)

You do realize that the only way this will end is with a duel at dawn. Unfortunately, I suck at waking up in the morning.

What will really suck is if they start the holiday sale on Monday, in which case we'd both be right and the universe would implode.

Yeah, I have no money for the sale anyway, so I lose. I also have problems waking up in the morning, so no duel then eh?

If the sale starts on Monday, I will cut off my arm and willfully mail it to Steam in exchange for the least expensive game on my wishlist.

The start of the sale was leaked anyways. The Detour Devs tweeted a week ago something along the lines of "If you missed our game in the Autumn sale, Detour will be 75 percent off in the Steam winter sale Dec 19-Jan 2."

19th sounds about right. Last year, it started on the 20th, and the year before that on the 22nd.

Can't wait, every year I buy a bunch of games 99% of which I have yet to play. But they are so darn cheap, how can I say no?

Just spent the last 5 hours playing Bastion and I think it's easily worth the $5. Combat is fun if a bit easy...unless you invoke the idols that is. Upgrading weapons and rebuilding The Bastion are addictive as well.
Anyone think this current sale will segue into a scavenger hunt type week that will then run into the sale?
More or less happened last year too. The Treasure Hunt meta even started on Dec 6 last year and ran till the sale. However since we're past the 6th and the sale is starting earlier this year, wouldn't be surprised if they rolled them into a single event. There have been a lot of unearthed achievements so I doubt they'd just spend a week on it.

I've got a question about this... scavenger hunt.

What is it? :D

I wasn't using Steam this time last year so it's all a bit new to me!

Meta event for small prizes or entries into sweepstakes. A lot of games get new themed achievemetns (summer ones for summer sale, Xmas ones for this one). These games also tend to be on sale during the event. Each day will have new games and achievements featured. Do the achievement, get a ticket or w/e currency they use this year. Spend tickets on whatever they have planned. For instance in summer a host of games offered DLC up for tickets so you could end up saving a few bucks if it was a DLC you wanted. But really, we're more or less in the dark as far as what the overall meta event will be this year, the only clues we have to it existing are the fact a good 20+ games have gotten new achievements in the past week.

Thanks :D

If it's anything like the Summer Sale (with all the tickets and whatnot) then it'll be fantata. I'm not a big achievement junkie but I do like going for them when there's a point to it. I think I ended up with 30 tickets in the end, bring on Xmas!

For sake of information, "steam winter sale" was never mention in the tweet.

https://twitter.com/#!/geoffkeene/status/142402108497461249

For those of you who missed DETOUR this past sale, it will be on sale AGAIN for 75% off on Steam; December 19th to January 2nd!

Admittedly, given the date range, that's probably more than just a normal sale.
If a company is going to tell people to wait to buy their games until they are 75% off why don't they just set the price point to that permanently.
Same reason companies release black friday ads weeks before the date?
If a company is going to tell people to wait to buy their games until they are 75% off why don't they just set the price point to that permanently.
There are plenty of potential customers that are NOT on Twitter and would have no idea. Still, it's probably not the best idea to say "hey, don't buy it now!"
Same reason companies release black friday ads weeks before the date?
A lot of that has to do with combating the leaks and getting in front of it with correct information. And most shoppers don't see the ads until Thursday morning anyway.
There are plenty of potential customers that are NOT on Twitter and would have no idea. Still, it's probably not the best idea to say "hey, don't buy it now!"
True, though this honesty is better than "the game will not be dropping for a very long time so buy it now!" A few weeks later it drops.

Before the game was not on my radar, but I will consider picking it up during the sale due to the rare showing of honesty on pricing for a company.

The companies that leak BF ads are stores who are trying to drive customers to the store so they buy stuff other than the sale stuff so they make a profit. I've never seen an actual company say "hey don't buy this right now because best buy is going to have it on sale on black friday."

If you're going to sell yourself short like that you might as well just say "don't buy it until it's 75% off."

You're also talking about a rather unknown indie developer with an under the radar game. Sales like this are where they see their money, aside from when they first release. They could set it to 2.50 permanently but that doesn't stand out in a sale as well as a giant 75 percent off sign. It's not likely to be a title featured in promotion during the sale itself so getting the word out early might help them out in the end.

Hmmmm, this makes sense. I forget the indies make money even when they go on super discount. I guess if they get a ton of people to check it out for cheap they can hope the word of mouth will lead to some regular price purchases down the line too.

Hmm these Steam Coupons could be interesting for older games that have sequels. One idea could be buy x game at whatever price and then get a coupon for x percent off the sequel.

In other words more wallet raping for us

Killing floor is on sale, not sure if thats the item today though. More likely a Weekend deal.

Edit: Killing floor page is down in the store. Maybe it is the item today?
