Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
So, according to Steam's Twitter feed, Trine is today's "daily deal" at 75% off (posted about 10 minutes ago). Since iBomber is already today's daily deal, one can only assume that someone at Valve was a bit trigger-happy with the Twitter update and posted tomorrow's deal.
I saw that. Gives me something to look forward to. How does this compare to Trine on PS3? Does the M+K make for better control than a gamepad?

Never tried it on the PS3, but I can only assume you have more precise controls with the mage (moving/creating blocks) and thief (hookshot aiming) using the M&K. Unless the PC have some kind of exclusive feature over the PS3, I personally wouldn't double-dip.

You don't aim the hookshot as I recall, you just press the button and it automatically attaches to whatever compatible object is near, and for that (especially if you're swinging and re-attaching between multiple objects) I think the controller is much more natural. I prefer the controller overall for Trine (I used the 360 controller which it recognizes and changes the OSD to) but I did find it easier and quicker to create boxes with the mage with a mouse, but that's about it. Also, it controls fine with a kb/m.
You've saved me from getting the seizure inducing shooter that plays music from personal library- and a few other games.
Beat Hazard? Man, you missed out. As someone who doesn't buy up every game just because it's cheap, I count Beat Hazard as one of my best cheap buys. To each their own though.

I completely disagree that the controller is more natural. I have very good dexterity and hand-eye coordination and the controller just felt clunky after playing it on the PC. While it has a few pros, I found the mouse and keyboard so much better than the controller. This was especially true and most apparent when controlling the wizard.

As for the hookshot with the thief, I'm pretty sure you actually have to aim it. Though I can't remember if it doesn't fire when there's no latchable stuff in the direction you're aiming in. I could be wrong as it's been quite a while since I've played it, but I've played local co-op on the PC and PS3.
Tower defense is the lowest of all genres though Defense Grid is nicely presented.
I almost always agree with your grouchy take on games, RollingSkull. Here, though, we differ. IMO:

Tower Defense > MMORPG
Tower Defense > match-3 "puzzles" (Bejeweled etc)
Tower Defense > Farmville and other Facebook grinds...

Once you realize that Tower Defense is a puzzle, not an RTS or action game, they are quite fun. To me.

This x10. Seriously BH is one of the best games on steam!

The hookshot has to be aimed, what the other guy said about it being on auto-pilot is probably some console bs. No matter what, it really depends on what you feel comfortable with.
To be honest though, without RollingSkull's posts, I would not have saved so much money on Steam games. That voice of skepticism has caused me to sit out on a fair share of deals. It's nice to read a different opinion from the common gushing of CAG over most titles on Steam.

Keep it up!
This. I... honestly think we need more people like RollingSkull around.

Someone to be the in text version of the small voice in my head.

The one that often later on shouts, 'Told you so,' when I buy something like, say, Psychonauts and end up hating it.

I had my first crack at Mount & Blade:Warband (bought on a CAG recommendation) tonight and... It rocked! Got me a nice little troupe on the go and some wench chose to come along for the ride so I'm happy as Larry.

Quick question - mods. I know there are plenty out there, are there any "must haves"? I'm not after the total conversion stuff just yet, more interested in graphic and gameplay mods. All tips welcomed :)
Is NyxQuest gamepad enabled?
No, it is not. You need to use gamepad mapping software for that.

Alright, I just went back to try it and you indeed only press a button and it automatically attaches to whatever surface.....as long as you're using the controller, so you could call it "some console bs" if you will. With the kb/m however you do need to aim it as Draekon said.

And I found Beat Hazard to be fun for all of five minutes and utterly boring beyond that.

Is NyxQuest gamepad enabled?

Nyxquest requires some sort of mouse/wiimote style interface alongside a movement interface as you're doing mouse-based physics control WHILE you're platforming.

Tower Defense > MMORPG
Tower Defense > match-3 "puzzles" (Bejeweled etc)
Tower Defense > Farmville and other Facebook grinds...

Alright then ONE of the lowest of all genres.

I did have fun with PvZ and then tried about four or five more. nuh-uh.

Floris Mod Pack (mod info, mod's subforum) is highly recommended by some. Comes in two flavors: Basic (the necessary mods) and Expanded (better graphics!). Loads of changes to the game, so you'll have to see the list to see what's new.

Anyone have any thoughts on Two Worlds II. I see it's half off until Thursday and well just curious how it is.

Now granted it's not $14.99 or under so it's not in my price range yet but curious for future sales.

The animations and voice acting are hilarious and awkward. I'd say it's worth $15. It will definitely hold you over till Skyrim.

I use a compilation mod called SnD's Polished Native. Combines a bunch of different little tweak mods that gets the game to my taste. That plus TweakMB, which lets you modify some of the base game stats if you want to. Mostly just use that one to make the damn cows follow me instead of having to herd them.

SnD's Polished Native
TweakMB

Mount and Blade Repository is a good mod site if you want to browse.

Second VindictiveGnome's thoughts. Good game but has its share of issues, grabbed it during the summer sale for around $17. Couldn't see myself paying more than that for it. If you don't have to have everything on steam I believe Direct2Drive has it on sale for 75% off and not just 50% like steam.

Wow Direc2Drive just kicked Steam's ass. I don't mind where I get my games, I just like the ease of auto update that Steam has. Well looks really good, so I will have to bite at $13.

It's always good to have a counter-point or other view. But you have to know your own tastes pretty well when considering his posts. He does not care for Beat hazard at all, for example, whereas I enjoyed my time with it quite a bit. But just seeing it described as "utterly boring," there's no context there and it becomes easy to be second-guessed out of a game you may enjoy. I dunno, just more context would be helpful with such negativity. If you hate, say, jRPGs, that's cool. Just let me know that when you say you immensely disliked, say, Final Fantasy XIII. Does that make sense?

It's one reason I tend to ignore (that sounds harsher than it's meant to) his take on indie games since he, IIRC, has little regard for them at all.

It probably doesn't help that I've had quite the disagreement with him before in regards to indie games though. But water under the bridge. It was surprisingly civil all things considered, so while I may fervently disagree with him, at least he's reasonable.
I just noticed that there is a HOARD complete bundle on sale for 25%. Considering picking this up since I missed the daily deal on Hoard in the past...

HOARD is fun...simple arcade-y action but it sucks up some hours. Feels like old style Warcraft except you're just destroying villages instead of building them.

The love indie games get makes "Indie games are trash" my favorite sentence to say in a gaming context even if it absolutely isn't true. There are quite a few I could, with enough torture, confess to have really enjoyed.

Beat Hazard, there's not a lot to say about that. Do you find its Geometry Wars with seizure inducing visuals flavor fun? I didn't. It either succeeds or it fails because it sure as hell doesn't aim high. It all depends on what sticks with you. But I just don't see how anyone can go back to that after playing a game like Jamestown or many better dot dodgers.

That makes you a teensy bit of a troll then, eh? ;) I think indie games get a lot of love because everyone likes an underdog, and there's nothing more scrappy than a game done by a single person or a small team on a meager budget. But it's also because they can try things big budget games can't afford to. Whether they're successful is another story, though.

Bullet hells/shmups are a different breed compared to twin-stick shooters, I'd argue. Games like Jamestown are designed around mastery through replaying and learning the levels inside and out. Twin sticks are more about increasingly difficult chaos and survival. They can scratch the same gameplay itch but in two different ways. But either way, Beat Hazard is a love it/hate it game that depends a lot on taste. I love Geometry Wars, so a fun game in that vein that I can play music through is definitely worth it, and a nice time waster.
It's always good to have a counter-point or other view. But you have to know your own tastes pretty well when considering his posts.
Indeed. The more information the better but it's always tempered by personal taste. I absolutely loathe over-the-shoulder action shooters/console clones like Dead Space and RF: Guerilla, etc. Wouldn't buy those games for $1. If someone professed their love for modern/console type shooters like that I'd probably ignore their opinion/take it with a grain of salt because I know said person has a proclivity towards a genre I hate. As far as indie games I've bought a ton... probably most of the games I have on Steam are indie. There are hits and misses and I'm probably hovering around a 50% success rate. You can't really make a blanket statement.
Is Beat Hazard along the same lines as Audiosurf?
Yes and no. Yes it does attempt to sync up with your music like Audiosurf but it doesn't do the best job. To it's defense though, I think it would be pretty hard to sync it up due to how the game works. I mean with Audiosurf you are traveling one path and collecting blocks, here is a shooter.
Is Beat Hazard along the same lines as Audiosurf?

My problem with Beat Hazard is that it doesn't seem to sync with the music in a noticeable way at all.
No. It is only insofar as it takes your music and does something gameplay related with it, but beyond that, the similarities end, as Audiosurf is powered by music while Beat hazard is... well, I'm not sure what it does. The game's fun in spite of itself, but the music has no appreciable impact on gameplay I've ever seen (or the sync it does have, like going from a lull to a lot of music, is delayed as enemies slowly filter into view.)

Thanks immanewb and Rehykja, will have a look when I'm home from work tonight. The Floris pack looks pretty much what I'm after, ta!
HOARD is fun...simple arcade-y action but it sucks up some hours. Feels like old style Warcraft except you're just destroying villages instead of building them.
Well, I played the demo and I can see how it can be addicting, but didn't really like the whole K&M setup for it. I'll hold off though and pick it up if it ever hits the $2.50ish mark again.
It's 25% off. ;) Slightly different.
Good catch - thanks!

See where as I feel the music in beat hazard does have a big effect on the gameplay. The more aggressive and hard the music the bigger and more bad ass your weapons and the gameplay effects are.

Audiosurf seemed like a stupid 5 min time waste to me...but iv sunk like 30 hours in to BH I believe.

They're entirely different types of games. I played AudioSurf for a bit but got bored. Can't say I've played Beat Hazard for a huge amount of time (maybe 15ish hours or so) but I enjoy it more -- I just prefer the arcade shooter/asteroid type game versus... well... whatever you can compare AudioSurf to.

I played Beat Hazard for about 3 hours before I realized you could move. Doh. I tried to get into Audio Surf and just couldn't do it. I really wanted to like it.

Audiosurf is pretty much like a falling block puzzler with a racing game's speed.

Beat Hazard is Geometry Wars with a stupid point grinding unlock scheme and pulsing seizure visuals.

Can't say I liked either.

My husband is a big K&M fan too, but he thought Hoard played better with controller. I only play it with the 360 controller, and I've put almost 20 hours into it. Love it!

Agreed - It's better with a controller.

But I wouldn't call it "addicting". More like a 2 hour diversion. The gameplay gets old fast. It's best with a group of people you know... strangers frequently drop out mid-match.

Also frustrating that there's no audio component; you're just playing, no chatter. If you have friends, you can use a Steam chat window to talk, which improves the game immensely, especially in co-op.
This. I... honestly think we need more people like RollingSkull around.

Someone to be the in text version of the small voice in my head.

The one that often later on shouts, 'Told you so,' when I buy something like, say, Psychonauts and end up hating it.
People who hate games like Psychonauts or World of Goo have other voices in their heads they should be more concerned about. Like the ones telling them to steal from orphans and deposit kitties in rubbish bins.

I kid. ;)

+1

I really liked Psychonauts. The poor controller configuration was the only reason I quit playing. And World of Goo is really clever and has great style.
Seems like another deal is up. 75% off SEGA Genesis Classics Collection for $7.49:

You can also purchase individual games for $.74/each
Gah. I know i shouldn't pick this up, but damn if that's not incredibly tempting. I just know that I'd never actually get around to playing any of them.
