Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Your just not excited because it doesnt feature baby pandas riding oversized hamsters or some other cute cartoony feature ;)

*note to self, design a game with pandas riding oversized hamsters in to battle*

Edit - And no, neither of them really interest me so your not alone.
I would so buy a game like that. :D
THIS IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE CRAPPY TASTE.

Both games are very precisely aimed. I can understand not liking them both, but they are still pretty solid. SpaceChem is definitely an engineer's puzzler.
Dude. Harsh.

Pretty excited about the addition of SpaceChem. I kept checking my Steam library thinking it would appear magically but it turns out you get an additional activation code from the Humble site.

Also you get Fishcake from SpaceChem. Yum!

This bundle started out as okay, and turned into awesomeness in no time. I love getting free games!
Good god, between Rage and Dead Island developers sure are making a strong case for not preordering games because you might just end up with a broken piece of shit game and no way to get your money back.
Eh, both are basically console games and their console releases went off without much of a hitch. The problem is when developers/publishers do sloppy ports to PC.

All Caps means it's a joke, son. A poorly told one maybe, but you can't take it seriously. Doubly so because I said it.

I liked both quite a bit but they just aren't games that everyone will pick up and like. Very narrow, precise focuses. You gotta have a fetish for what they're offering to really want to dig deep.

If anybody is down for playing the new co-op maps in Portal 2, please add adamska2020 to your friends list ASAP. I just tried to play with random people and I want to blow my goddamn brains out. (I know this should go in the PC forum, but that place is pretty slow-moving).

I don't know where else to put it, but I was having some problems with Frozen Synapse and figured out a fix. My laptop has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M with an Optimus technology that switches between integrated graphics and the NVIDIA graphics processor. Anyway, for some reason, it selected the integrated graphics for Frozen Synapse....After I used the NVIDIA program to fix that, it runs just fine.

Hope this info can help someone!

I don't think I'd call the loss of save files in Dead Island on consoles going off without a hitch.

At any rate, the reason I mention this issue in the Steam thread is because that is where it is most relevant. You put in a preorder on Steam, pre-download it so you can start playing it on midnight of release day, only to discover the game is broken and you're left at the mercy of the developers as to when they're gonna fix it. No option to return it, no option to change your mind.

Now, I will admit I'm not very well versed on how preorders on steam work so perhaps someone else can answer this for me but once the transaction goes through, prior to the actual release is there any way to cancel the preorder?

In the case of Dead Island, while the major launch issue of the developer's build of the game going out has been resolved, there's still a lot of issues with the game and the fact that we're nearly a month out from launch now doesn't leave a lot of confidence that it will ever be a stable game.

Yes, they were primarily marketed as console games first, but if Steam really wants us to keep using their service, there has to be some level of accountability for developers.

Civilization 5 GotY edition is now available combining the base game with "tons of DLC." http://store.steampowered.com/app/901772/

I'm pretty sure that the sales throughout the year have made the base game plus all the DLC available for less than the $49.99 price tag on this, but it's something to watch during the sales.

Includes:
All 4 Cradle of Civilization Map Packs (Mediterranean, Asia, Americas, Mesopotamia)
Civilization Pack: Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II)
Double Civilization and Scenario Pack: Spain and Inca
Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia
Civilization and Scenario Pack: Denmark - The Vikings
Explorer’s Map Pack
Official Digital Soundtrack
Am I the only one that doesn't care about Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem? I sure feel like I am.
I really had no interest in Frozen Synapse for a long time but kept hearing great things about it and tried out the demo and loved it. I picked it up last time is was on sale and now thanks to the Humble Bundle I convinced my wife to try it and we are having a blast playing each other.

She seems to have similar taste to you, she likes adventure, puzzle, turned based rpgs. FS is very tactical and challenging. Like RollingSkull mentioned the tutorial isn't great but if you haven't tried the demo I would urge you to give it a shot, it's a very fun and challenging game.

While I don't disagree, in this day and age it is generally a good idea to avoid preordering anything. First because of games being released in buggy/unpolished states and second because the price usually drops a good $10-$20 within the first month. It's a common pattern. The $60/$50 pricepoints are meant to haul in the people who absolutely can't wait to play the latest games NOW. Personally I can wait given that a lot of them are usually underwhelming in terms of gameplay and content (most modern AAA titles are 10-15 hours long at best).

Only game I plan on preordering in the next six+ months is Torchlight 2 because it's reasonably priced and I know what I'm getting. It'll be the first time I've preordered a game... well... ever.

Edit: To answer your question, yes, you can cancel a preorder on Steam so long as the game hasn't been released/gone live yet.

The Orcs Must Die demo's energy is positively infectious. It's like partying with a white, nerdy, medieval themed version of Cole from Gears of War.

Just a shame that it is tower defense.

Let me also add that the story is probably a crummy way to learn the game and you really need at least if you're doing tutorial and early story missions to at least mix in three or so random AI skirmishes until you get a feel for the versus-y half of the game sans story gimmicks.

I/m hopping Orcs Must Die is on sale during the winter; and speaking of tower defense games; is dungeon defenders a better game?

And if you don't preorder, you're at the mercy of whatever agreements the publisher worked out with various retailers on if/when the bonus preorder items will be available as DLC. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Genocidal, that depends on the publisher, really. You can tell from JC2 that Eidos is serious about giving out that preorder DLC for a reasonable dollar or three extra (Relatively speaking) on down the line, as they just did with Deus Ex HR. Bethesda is hit and miss but the NV preorder goodies were worthless anyway.

Hunted never monetized the preorder DLC but you could get it for PC easily for free with no fear of illegality. You can't even redeem that stuff a second time if you lose your save.

What has there been in the way of substantial preorder DLC that wasn't made widely available shortly after a games release? I don't really bother following preorder promotions and am curious on what I'm missing out on. Is it mainly MMO stuff?

Brink wasn't available until after the game was dead. TDU2, I'm not sure the cars were ever made available, but can't comment because I stopped playing (I don't see them on Steam). Two just off the top of my head, we'll see how long until the Rage gear becomes available to everyone.

The L.A. Noir missions got put up as DLC, and the RDR PS3 DLC is getting put in the GotY. I guess the latter isn't "shortly", but usually the substantial gameplay additions like levels, maps etc. get put up as DLC.

Some day, a tower defense game is going to steal your heart. Then you'll forget all your days of denigrating them, and you'll run off with it and have little Rolling Tower Skull Defense babies.

Technically Plants vs. Zombies already did that but don't tell anyone. She's a Capulet. I'm a Montague. Not meant to be.

Plus the rest of her family is garbage.

Dead Island was bad on both PS3 and PC. I mean can they at least test the fucking games before selling it .

I can live with the bad RAGE textures, it's fine. It's just I hope the game picks up at some point, feels like meh borderlands knockoff.

I may try the demos of the two games soon, while the Humble Bundle is still on. The screenshots of the games just look so...uninviting, especially for SpaceChem.

Have you tried Defense Grid? I really enjoyed it, but then again, I'm a fan of the tower defense genre.

TDU2, I'm not sure the cars were ever made available, but can't comment because I stopped playing (I don't see them on Steam). Two just off the top of my head, we'll see how long until the Rage gear becomes available to everyone.
TDU2 is really good, despite its share of problems [steep learning curve].
Was easily worth the $4 that I spent on it, when Amazon DL had it on sale for that.

Tell me Sir, do you bite your thumb, Sir?
For if you do, it may serve to make it
difficult to play some games.

Witcher 2 was recommended to me yesterday, I decided to look it up last night and found it was 25% off on Steam. Looked good so I decided to buy it and now it's already back to regular price. Great timing, glad I didn't wait! Was that just a one day deal?

No, it was on sale for the past week or since version 2.0 was announced.

It was 25% off from a few different places for a week or so to coincide with the big 2.0 patch that added and fixed quite a few things.

Broken Sword is on sale at 50% off, which isn't too exciting since most people who wanted it got it for free from GOG.

However, pay attention: All Broken Sword games are on sale, including The Broken Sword Triple Pack for $4.99. So if you want all of them, there you go. For the price of two of the games at their sale price or one at regular price, you get all three in the series right in your Steam library.

as a non xbox 360 owner... bought fable 3 + the 2 quest packs!

still thinking if i should get the broken sword bundle, already got the first one free from GoG.

Fable 3 was ok. I had fun, but there were things I didn't like about it. The whole "interactive menus" thing was cool at first, but got old fast. There was no way to check your inventory and there was no way to access the map without going to the "pause screen" and walking up to a map.

Oh, the PC version has SecuRom and GFWL for those who want to know.

Interesting. Been eyeing Fable 3 for a while, and this one does have the full LIVE functionality for achievements and the like. Is it safe to assume the port is a good one, and that playing with a 360 controller will be just like playing it on a 360? (With the exception of better graphics. ;P )

I have Fable III on GFWL and I'm interested in the DLC and Steam even says you'll get a code to redeem on GFWL. But it also says I have to start up the game and get the code from the Steam overlay after launching Fable.
So does this really mean I won't have access to the GFWL codes without buying Fable III on Steam?

I'm assuming so; this sucks for anybody (including myself) that purchased this from the GFW store for $12.50 (75%) about a month ago.

It seems with Steam that you can only view the DLC by left-clicking on the actual game title on Steam and viewing DLC. I'm afraid if you buy the DLC without the game, the DLC will just disappear until you purchase it on Steam.
