CAGiversary!

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Be a team player and nobody will care what your k/d is. Drop health packs, ammo packs, motion mines. Repair stuff. Just don't revive people while you're getting shot at :D
Sure wish that had been the mentality of the players on the server I was on the day I quit the game. I don't have the patience for anal k/d ratio players in these games as if that's all that counts. Never playing another Battlefield or Call of Duty game again as long as those statistics are around.
There's a Warhammer Complete Pack coming for a weekend deal tomorrow (as the demo for Space Marine will be available that day to those who've pre-ordered).
It will include DOW I, II, both games' expansions, Retribution + its wargear, Space Marine, and the pre-order bonus of Darksiders.

I wish I hadn't already registered my copy of Soulstorm (or bought Darksiders, for that matter - though at least that will be giftable).
Will the DOW games still be discounted by themselves...? I do not think I will be getting Space Marine right away.

find another server. the gaming experience varies wildly from server to server on those games.

this. i play medic almost exclusively in bfbc2 and my k/d is usually something like 0.2, but spotting, healing and reviving usually put me in the upper half of the scoreboard :)
Great news! I was expecting Skyrim to be Steamworks, but it's great to know for sure.

What bugs me is that Steam isn't doing a discount or a special deal or anything. Would've switched to the Newegg version, but I'm hoping Amazon's release-day shipping will actually get it to be before it unlocks on Steam (assuming it unlocks at noon on 11/11/11, guess we don't know). To be honest, I don't care about having a box copy or a cloth map. I'm just annoyed on principle that it's $59.99 on Steam and all we get is a TF2 hat.
They are not obligated to even give you a hat, its a new game after all. You can hope for a discount but never expect it.
Will the DOW games still be discounted by themselves...? I do not think I will be getting Space Marine right away.
I am pretty sure each DOW game will be discounted separately because they always have been in situations like these although you might not get as much off as the full pack.

Not interested in Space Marine because I hate Gears of War and this looks like Warhammer 40k of War. Now the Dawn of War series is awesome. I just wish I didn't buy Retribution 2 weeks ago for $30 now (but it was to play with friends so it works out)
Man, it sure seems like Avadon wants you to know it's indie. Surprised they didn't bold it.
Spiderweb has been indie since before indie was cool. Jeff Vogel has been making those ancient RPGs since forever. I mentioned in the Steam thread during the summer sale. I'm happy to see him officially on Steam, now. And what a price! His games are usually like $25.

Well that's debateable, in my opinion. :) We're not getting the cloth map, nor is there a box/DVD/manual to produce and ship. I could (and probably will) buy it at Amazon for retail price, and I bet Amazon will discount at least a little. I could have bought it from Newegg for $49.99.

Not obligated, no, but, in my opinion, it would be logical for Steam to do something to incite purchase. I pretty much never buy brand new games. If Steam wants more people to buy new stuff, they need to entice us. This is CAG, after all, and my primary purchases (99%) are deals of the day, weekend deals, mid-week deals, or holiday/summer deals.

In the case of Skyrim, they certainly don't have us over a barrel since it's Steamworks. We have lots of choices, and they should want us to choose buying it directly from Steam.

Just my consumer opinion, though, admitting fully that I know nothing about capitalism and live in my own little world.

Give it time. I expect we'll see preorder pricing when it gets closer to release date.

Maybe not, though. Steam has never been very competitive for triple-A titles. They seem to get by on convenience.
They seem to get by on convenience.
This.

They do not need to add any incentive because this is enough for many people.

I bought dawn of war 2 last christmas and finally got around to beating it this summer and I give it a HUGE recommendation. The campaign is really different from starcraft or from typical RTS games and it works surprisingly really well.

It's pretty funny really, because they get the cheap people like me due to their constant and awesome sales, and then they get the full-price folk too due to convenience and I suppose impulse-buying. Normally I'm totally fine with waiting, but I'd probably pay $99.99 for Skyrim if that was what it retailed for, even if I knew it would be $20 a month later. Can't really say that about any other game. OBSESSION.

I can see where your coming from and I would agree, in order to have more people buy games there has to be incentives. But Steam is dominating the digital market and we do not know how their system works when it comes to commissions. They might not care in this case because Skyrim is steamworks so therefore they are making shit ton of money already. Also remember that the publisher are the ones who ultimately decide on the pricing. If steam discounts a brand new game, I assume they would have to take it out of their commission.
If I loved the Star Trek Armada games, will I like GSB? the lack of resource collecting intrigues me, as after UI beat the game I would replay just using with the unlimited funds cheats code and build a few hundred ships and just annihilate everything
I don't think anyone answered this. I didn't feel qualified, but I'm the best you've got! :) One thing to keep in mind (although you surely know this already) is that you don't actually control the battles at all. You make preparations and let the captains do the actual commanding and such. I think that in Armada, surely you had direct control? That's one thing I like so much about GSB though is that you don't have to control stuff. I hate micromanaging and clicking fast and diddling around. So if you like that, then you will probably be annoyed by GSB, but if you can let go of controlling the actual battles, I think you'll enjoy it! Didn't play Star Trek Armada though (although now I'm wondering about it, as I loved the Star Trek shows in the 90s).

Todd Howard: "I think we should charge $50 a month for Skyrim! Every other game on the market should have a one-time fee of $4.50 but not Skyrim."

Steam: "And the real bargain can be a one-time-payment to play the game for life for only $4000!"

Todd Howard: "Great! Yes, this partnership will do really well I think!"

Gabe Newell: "I'm afraid if I exercise I'll die and the Steam servers will have to be on permanent off-line mode."

Todd Howard: "I don't exercise either, but I also don't eat. Or drink. Did I pee yet this month?"

Skyrim beta tester: "FMLLLLLLLLL"

Skyrim Nord from Previews: "DRAGON SHOUT!"

Gabe Newell: "Is that a new restaurant? I'll have the Dragon Shout Burrito."

Dave Thomas, Founder of Wendy's: "You traitor!"

Todd Howard: "Are they related?"
Just an FYI, Skyrim will use Steamworks, so buy it wherever it is cheapest cause it will still activate on steam!
So fucking sick of this shit. What's the point of buying retail if I'm forced to use Steam anyway? I miss the old days when you actually owned games and there was no DRM. Worst part is nobody seems to care, so they can just get away with it. Do I seriously need to go back to piracy to send a message?

I am kinda happy when a game uses Steamworks. Yes it's DRM but if I were to buy the game without Steamworks I would first need to do some things so I don't need the CD because having the CD in every time I need to play a game is fucking annoying, and then have to see when a game does get patched and manually keep track of every game I have installed.

It saves me from a hassle.

Roboblitz? I thought it was gonna be Warhammer? Hm. And it must show how cheap I am that I think a $4.99 seems expensive.

___

A question. How do I delete stuff from my Steam Cloud? I don't want to keep all those Oblivion saved games. I had to turn off Steam Cloud for the game because it would restore them every time I deleted them (I don't need a gigabyte of saves on my HDD).

I don't think you can delete it from the cloud, but you can disable synchronization by right clicking the game, properties, updates, then disable.

Roboblitz is DotD. Warhammer supposed to be Deal of the Weekend.

Aww, sad that the Retribution DLC is not individually on sale. =( Was hoping to get the Ulthwe pack for cheap. Good pricing otherwise on the actual games themselves though!

(Baw, also sad that The Last Standalone is also not discounted)
Grr... was really hoping to get Chaos Rising for sub $10. I have too many unplayed games to get it now at $10.
Agreed...and now I just saw Hoard for $5 and I'm tempted to pick that up as well!
That's only how much you save. The price of the pack is actually $100.
Yeah, I just noticed. :(
Ugh, too many good deals. Picked up DOW2: Gold. After buying Witcher 2 off GOG.com, I need to stop spending.
In your defense you bought two of the best PC games to come out within the past two years.

Hell of a deal for DOW II and if you like RTS games I can't recommend DOW II enough.
Isn't it cheaper to just buy the digital download of the Gold pack on Amazon then activate the key on Steam...?
Actually yes it is, I just checked Amazon. Granted you don't get retribution, it's still $7 cheaper than Steam for DoW II and Chaos Rising.

Having never played the Warhammer titles, do you think I should just pick that up now and then get Retribution later when it is on sale again? I feel like getting the GoldPack on Amazon and then Retribution would be a bit much, I doubt I would play it all.

It really depends on how much of the story you're going to be interested in picking up. From what I understand, Dawn of War 2 has a subplot going on between the games. Jumping straight into Retribution spoiled a few bigger events from the first two Dawn of War 2 titles. So if you do want to see where the story begins / goes, start with Gold and then pick up Retribution down the road during another Steam sale. (It already had a good showing price wise during the Summer sale, it'll only get cheaper!)

For raw gameplay content though, you'd be better off with Retribution. You get to play through the campaign with any of the available races, as well as more multiplayer races to play as.

One part I'm curious about. Does playing The Last Stand through Retribution give you any more content than playing it in DoW2 + Chaos Rising?

I'm on the Steam page looking at the Warhammer sale and I'm a little confused. There is a list of like 20 titles, some being DLC. Do I have to buy the whole 61.29 thing to get the deal on DOW 2? How do I get DOW 2 and the DLC itself? confused.

You're not alone in your confusion. I'm interested in starting this series, but don't really understand where to start.

Either search or click on Warhammer : Dawn of War 2 for $9.99 and the pack will be listed under the videos/screenshots.

Does the original DOW relate at all to the second in terms of story? I'm an absolute sucker for stories - I'd say along the lines of OCD - so if it makes sense to start with the original DOW I will.

Thanks.

No. I think there may be a character and a couple references, but that's about it.

Don't let that hold you back on getting the first DOW series. It's really good.

I feel better about myself knowing it's not just me lol.

Looks like it may be cheaper to go with DOW2 Gold on Amazon. And Retribution.

Is that the best deal guys? Are those two the biggies that us nubs need?
