Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I kind of like Numen. I'd never argue that it's a good game, but I'm happy with it for the $1 I paid. I never thought it was trying to be Diablo at all; it feels more like a single-player WoW-type game.
Just beat the campaign in Spectromancer. The game encourages you to play multiple times, as there's a card category unique to each game type.

Can't recommend this one enough, especially if you're a fan of Magic: The Gathering.
You might wanna check out Kard Combat for iOS, it's pretty much the same game as Spectromancer and it's Universal.
The Polynomial for $2.50
Today's Daily Deal
This game blows...I bought it last Christmas sale, and it is pretty horrible, save the 2 bucks.

Borderlands also scales the loot and difficulty correct the more players like Diablo, so you would want 4 people in ur game regardless of level. Its says that when they enter so Im sure most of you know this already.

Keeping up with quests is another thing, like some have said whoever hosts then the game uses their progression. Again, this is like Diablo. I just had the person in my group who wasnt the furtherest to make game and helped them get the quests done.

I was on the verge of pulling the trigger on this, could you elaborate on what is so bad about it?

Bought The Polynomial. It looks fun, and besides I spent more on my coffee today then this game

Edit: it's about $2.50 worth of fun. It lacks structure and content but it's one of those relaxing experiences if you put on the right music. I like it, but it's not really deep or anything. Just something that has a ton of eye candy and is relaxing.

2nd Edit: This soundtrack is fucking awesome. Worth the $2.50 alone for it. Comes in .ogm which is an ogg file and is in the Steam folder.
Willing to Bet Brink will be the midweek sale....
Eh, doubt it; it was the weekend deal and free weekend 3 weeks ago during Quakecon.

How hard are the Far Cry games? I don't play many FPSs, with Borderlands being the only I've spent longer than an hour or two with (37 hours). I used to get dizzy playing them, but that's no longer the case.

Farcry 2 has it's share of flaws with respawning guard posts and stuff, but overall for $5, it's a good deal. Combine that with the original and for $7.50, hell of a steal.

Excellent, now I can add Far Cry 1 and 2 to my Steam backlog joining Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and about 15 other games.

These fucking sales have to stop, I'm like a damn crack addict.

Far Cry 2 could have been fantastic, but the respawn broke the enjoyment of the game for me. Having an epic battle, saving a buddy and blowing up some enemies is great, but when they reappear very quickly afterwards, the checkpoints turn to tedium.
I had to resort to cheat codes to so I could get to the wtf ending. I recommend getting the simple mod to get rid of the egregious opening load screens so you can quickly get into the game.

The game needs to be marked down in price before they put it on sale again. It's still $50 on Steam, while I can currently get it on Amazon this week for $10. Even Best Buy and GameStop have it for $20.

Yeah if there was a mod to reduce spawning times it would of been excellent. I mean it's still a decent game, but those respawning guard towers kinda ruined a lot of fun since the maps were fucking huge.
Hunted: The Demon's Forge retail copies do NOT activate on Steam, correct? ($10 on Amazon)
Correct. For some time it was rumored to use Steamworks, so that probably got stuck in yer brain.

Also, if Kalypso had announced that TF2 hat during their anniversary sale, I would've picked up the Pack+T4+JA3. Their loss.

The updates for the day had this weird thing. I think it suggested I owned some war game, maybe "Art of War" and suggested gifting extra copies to my friends.

I clicked the gift button, and it took me to manage my gifts, but there was nothing new there. I'm confused.

It was a bug. I got hit by the same thing (freaked me out, thinking someone hacked my account).

Same, I suddenly had seven DLC packs for Cossacks to give away!

Nothing was showing on my "Account activity" screen so I stopped panicking. Eventually.

I can confirm that I'm dying from Steam... 232 game-long backlog, no joke, just counted it. It was painful... Maybe I should give my wallet a rest? :D NAHHHHH
Wow, the demo for Avadon had me hooked. I'll definitely be picking this up during the winter sale, if not sooner.
Same here. The combat system reminds me of Fallout 1/2 which is a good thing. Turn-based is the way to go for me when there are multiple party members to deal with. Supposedly the full game is like 30 hours too. Definitely pick it up at some point.

Wow, excellent. Glad there's so much content. For myself, I tend to do better when a game is less than 20 hours, but I was pretty engaged by Avadon. Also, some of the item descriptions were pretty hilarious. I enjoyed finding a towel and having the description read, "You should always know where this is." (Hitchhiker's Guide reference.) :D

$15 seems kind of expensive!
Wow, the demo for Avadon had me hooked. I'll definitely be picking this up during the winter sale, if not sooner.
Buy it now to support the maker and his games on Steam so that we get more games like it! :) His games normally sell for like $30 each (or have in the past at least) if that's any consolation. I bought it on day one, without playing the demo, and I'm really happy I did. Some stuff is worth not being cheap about. (VERY LITTLE tho in my opinion ha. See my above comment on $15 seeming expensive.)

Avadon is worth it tho :) Glad you like it!

Do you guys think they'll ever have a deal on The Sims Medieval and its new expansion pack, Pirates and Nobles? I have The Sims Medieval on Impulse because it wasn't on Steam when it first came out. :( Now I hate myself and don't want to buy the expansion on Impulse. I'd like them both on Steam.

Don't know why really, but I love that game.

I want to say Sims Medieval was cheaper during the summer sale. Maybe like $35 or so.

I think it's $29.99 now, so I'm hoping for a $20 combo pack eventually, or at least to get each for $10?

Sorry for my post spamming today. Have to ask, though, does anyone keep getting Steam notifications that Steam has updated and needs to restart, and it says/acts like it's a new update but says "August 1st"? It's done this at least five times for me since August 1st.

STEAMs DD make every day X-mass- some days it's "thanks for the crappy socks, mom"(today was a sock day) and other days it's "Yes, a sling shot". Now, Im looking forward to opening the next present at 10am tomorrow.
Sims Medieval is still $49.99 with the new expansion pack at $29.99 which requires the base game. What a ripoff.
Will Wright's games (Sims, Spore) take a long time to come down in price. They seem to exist outside the world of normal PC pricing... I suspect because their target audience isn't the same as most games, where people track release dates and pricing. Sims is more of an impulse buy for more-casual gamers.

Which is especially odd because EA tends to be very aggressive with their discounting on Steam (and now at Origin). but they obviously know what they're doing. It's a huge franchise.

Anyone here interested in Hard Reset. I am looking at it and it looks pretty good, wondering what other people thought about it. I might buy it when I get paid.
Why not?
I played with a controller, which may have hurt my enjoyment. Not sure. Starts with a bad interface, low resolution, odd feeling character movement. Then you add bad targeting and high difficulty.

I noticed the date thing. I haven't kept track of how often though. Are you subscribed to the latest beta? Sometimes that makes things wonky. When I did the beta for the trading feature, it glitched the Steam browser "back" button until recently. I'm gonna mention this in our Steam-proper thread.

Serious Sam Double D came out today, but it honestly looks pretty dull, despite the gun stacking. Even with the 20% off I get from owning previous games, I don't think I'll have much interest in this until 75% off, if then.

August 1st was the last client update. You can see the client update history here.

Like dfg says, make sure you're not subscribed to any betas.

If that doesn't help, try downloading the client from steampowered.com and reinstalling it over your existing installation.

DO NOT uninstall Steam and reinstall it - I learned the hard way that if you do that, it uninstalls ALL of your Steam games along the way. (I thought that they would remain on my system, just waiting for me to reinstall Steam... silly me.)

Although if you only have 1 or 2 games installed, this might be a good option. But you've been warned. :)

Or maybe just wait a bit for the next client update. There's at least one almost every month, historically, so you're due for one soon. Tat might clear it up, too.

I think its more like a kid that celebrates Christmas and hanukkah. He has several days of small gifts that he enjoys until one day suddenly bam he is flooded with gifts. The daily deals are just appetizer gifts leading up to the Christmas or summer sales which are freaking gift orgies.

:applause:

Great point.

Another question I have been pondering....

What is the main reason we like these cheap non-mainstream games?
Is it because of their price?
Is it because they are NOT mainstream?
Is it because they give us a greater gaming experience?
