Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Not much interest for Cloning Clyde, I see. The game doesn't look like it's aged too well along-side their more splosiony games. Something about the game video just looks murky.

It's the graphics. They're pretty ugly-looking, but looks like a lot of fun, nonetheless.

Who can gift a fellow cheap ass a copy of Hitman. In return, I have a code to download 2 exclusive multiplayer modes on F.3.A.R (360) if you'd like that, or the PAX exclusive League of Legends Sivir code.
I picked up Hamilton's a while back and have liked what I've had time to play of it so far. There's a demo, so if you're on the fence check it out.

Also, here's a vid from TotalBiscuit (who sucks at this game): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KfawzlnrsY
Wow. Thanks for that vid link. Once I heard 'timed treasure meter,' I decided to move on. Hate stuff like that in puzzle games.

Looks interesting, but I think I'll wait until it is offered in a pack with several other games I want. Oh Steam, you and I know that will happen eventually!

Blood Money is the best assassin experience in a video game. Sure some things like Assassin's Creed have better graphics and a cool story, but Blood Money puts you through every assassination scenario that you'd ever dream of playing through. Which sounds pretty dark but hey, it's fiction right?

I'm absolutely killing my backlog.

Ran through Clive Barker's Jericho three days ago (it's terrible!). Did a run through and completed the ultra addictive Atom Zombie Smasher today. Started playing Hitman Blood Money with my friend and am planning on starting Breath of Death VII next by myself.

Hitman Blood Money is one of the best games ever created. I don't think I am wrong nor do I say this lightly. Up there with Chaos Theory and Thief 2 and all the other generic list of greats.

The first level is a linear tutorial designed to make you do one of everything you can do. Beyond that, pure gold.

health insurance companies should cover "THE STEAM SYNDROME" my freaking backlog is huge and if they put out a good deal and i dont buy it i'll be regretting it the whole week o_O....
If you add a non-Steam game to your library, does it still not report how much time you've spent with the game?
It does not to my knowledge.

No, all it does is say you are playing a Non Steam Game (whatever game name is) as your status, and allows you to use the Steam overlay.

I'd have to agree... Doesn't get much better than Blood Money.

I wonder how the new Hitman will turn out?

Dead Island looks really cool! I suppose it'll be $10 during the next summer sale. :) I have a massive backlog and no money. Wouldn't mind supporting it, but maybe it'll get the sales it needs without my help.

I'm already buying Skyrim at full price! What more can the industry expect of me!

Hm, not sure I want to register my tiny handful of outside games, then. I like my games to at least look like they're played. When a game shows no playtime, it just looks to outsiders like you don't play your games. ;)

There's no real downside to it. When you load up a non-steam game through steam it will show " is playing Din's Curse. [Non-Steam Game]" or something to that effect while you're actually playing it. However it won't log any game under your profile in any manner for record. So you won't see it listed under your profile at all, nor will anyone else outside of them seeing you playing it while you're playing it.

Plus if you're an active steam chatter, you can use the steam overlay in the game by loading it through Steam. It's also stupidly easy to add non-steam games to Steam.

The new Hitman makes all the right people mad so I can't hate it. Just so long as it's a fun game, I'll play it, no matter what style it goes for.

Dead Space 2 (PC) will be $10 with free shipping from EA if/when they get 500 comments/likes. Link. Live at 5pm PST.

No, Dead Space 2 does not register on Steam, but I think the price is the lowest I've seen.
quick question: should I play the DLC for Borderlands before or after I finish the main quest?
only knoxx and claptrap are tied to the story and fall after the main campaign is finished. the others dont matter.
quick question: should I play the DLC for Borderlands before or after I finish the main quest?
I waited until after I finished the main content and found that I was drastically over-leveled for the DLC content. It was a bit disappointing as it made an already easy game even easier and removed all sense of challenge. Plus by that point the loot was mostly underpowered compared to what I was use to picking up. The Underdome is the exception in that it scales to your character. I'd suggest that you jump into each DLC now and look around to just get an idea of what level the enemies are at.

At least on the 360 version Knoxx and Claptrap both scaled to my character for me after finishing the game. If you haven't completed the first playthrough, everything will be drastically underwhelming, enemies, loot, difficulty, etc. Crawermax kicks my ass constantly lol.

The second playthrough is balanced for characters starting at around level 35. If you do all the DLC you'll start that playthrough at like level 50 or higher. In that case you'll find yourself just ignoring the enemies and running through the levels during your second playthrough. Having maxed three characters out I've found that the most enjoyable approach (from a loot & challenge perspective) is to wait on diving into the DLC until after you've completed the main game twice.

But yeah, Crawermax is a different story. ;)

That's true, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I'm on my third playthrough. What a good game haha. Can't wait for 2 to come out!

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to jump into zombie island first then see where I want to go from there (I'm hearing bad things about Moxxi and horror stories about Knoxx). This is my second playthrough, first on a PC. Playing the game 3x before getting into the DLC would've been too long of a wait.

Okay, So Civ 5 is 75% off which is my usual price point, however I never pay over $10 for a game, so what do I do?

I've NEVER played a Civ game before, is it easy to get into for a newbie? and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Horror stories about Knoxx?? It's by far the very best of the bunch. It raises the level cap, it has a completely new and rare class of weapons, replayable/lootable areas and bosses.

Civ 5 was my first game, definitely wasn't as hard as I thought it would have been to get into. It may take the tutorial + two or three games to get the hang of it.

Wouldn't recommend if you cant devote a block of time to play...like an hour or two at a time probably.

As a Civ noob I found it a lot easier to get into than Civ IV. The Civ veterans were a little upset with V because it stripped out some things (religion for example) and reduced the complexity a bit. Still a fairly complex game though. I get on a kick for it once in a while and enjoy it immensely.

Wish they would've put some of the DLC on sale though.

Looks like some Need for Speed games are on sale for the weekend too. Anyone with experience in them have any recommendations?

Edit: Also, the Knoxx Borderlands DLC was great. The best one in my opinion.
Another quick question, if I were to go for Civ 5, Is the deluxe ed worth the extra $2.50?
While it provides you with the Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II) DLC priced at 5 dollars, it brings very little to the game. With the price only being 12.50, I see no reason to pay the extra for an extremely limited amount of content.

The only DLCs I believe that are actually worth any money at all are the DLCs which include a scenario, because that is actually bringing a different way to play the game to the table. The other DLCs are either maps or Civs which can both be user created and downloaded for free in game.

Not that it is bad, but that it is really hard.

I bought Civ V when it was on sale for the same price at GMG. I wish they put DLC on sale because I would consider buying some at that price. Then again I still need to boot up Civ V

Honestly, I would wait until Civ IV complete goes on sale again for about $7.50. It's an awesome game, and the price can't be beat for getting all the content.

The only one I can't recommend from experience is Undercover, as I gave up on the series during that era. For $2.50, I will probably pick it up, because I have all the others.

I really enjoyed the Shifts. They are an interesting take on a sim racing game and I think do a good job of treading the line between accessible and hardcore. The first one is a bit easier than the second and is probably the better value during the sale as the second one came out so recently. If you have a good sound setup, that is where the game really shines. My favorite word to describe it is Visceral. Ive done some racing IRL and Shift does a great job of capturing those white knuckle moments when you take just a bit too much speed into a corner and are on the verge of losing it.

I liked Hot Pursuit, but I thought it felt a bit empty compared to Burnout: Paradise, which plays fairly similar. The use of licensed cars does set it apart and it has some great challenges with solid gameplay and controls. The real standout in HP is the multiplayer though as the actual Hot Pursuit mode is really fun. HP did have several DLC packs on consoles, but most werent very substantive so youre not missing a whole lot. Personally, I would be right on the edge of pulling the trigger at $10.20. If you haven't played Burnout then that would probably push me over.

Just to echo what others are saying, Knoxx's is easily the best of the DLC. In fact, it's some of the best DLC I've seen for any game. There's a lot of content there and a huge reward for you at the end. It's only problem is that there's often a stretch of emptiness on the road between you and your destination.

On the other hand, everything you've heard about the Underdome is probably true. It's nothing more than a tiny hub connecting three small arenas. The only good thing about it is it provides a bank for you.

Civ V is an absolute steal at that price...I bought it for full price at release and have not regretted it one bi...This coming from a person that never plays sim/rts type games, Civ V is incredible addicting, great game...

What to sim/rts types have to do with Civ? It's a 4x TBS.
So if I were to buy one of the Need For Speed Shift games, do you recommend Shift 1 or Shift 2?

If there any advantage to buying Shift 2?
I think value wise, Shift is the way to go. Shift 2 is still fairly new so the higher price and lower discount would put me off. I imagine you will see that price split in half by the time NFS: The Run comes out.

Shift 2 was a good upgrade though, so if you plan on just buying one, I suppose 2 would be the one to go for. It adds night races, a tougher AI and basically leans a bit closer to sim than the previous installment. If you are on the fence or likely to get both in the long-run, I think Shift 1 is the way to go.
