Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I think value wise, Shift is the way to go. Shift 2 is still fairly new so the higher price and lower discount would put me off. I imagine you will see that price split in half by the time NFS: The Run comes out.

Shift 2 was a good upgrade though, so if you plan on just buying one, I suppose 2 would be the one to go for. It adds night races, a tougher AI and basically leans a bit closer to sim than the previous installment. If you are on the fence or likely to get both in the long-run, I think Shift 1 is the way to go.
Alight I will just get Shift 2 and Undercover then. I am just going to get one Shift game because while I like Gran Turismo 5, it is really annoying me with it's you don't have the right car to race yet there is no cars available to buy to enter it

For those who wondered if you buy Shift 2 on Steam, it will also activate on EA Origin. I activated it just to see if it does.
Anyone tried the daily deal? Just curious if it's worth it.
THIS.

Big markdown, but looks like Axis and Allies with modern units. which wouldn't mean anything, and I still have the old A&A on CD

If you have a passing interest in a more arcade-y racer, you can't go wrong with Hot Pursuit. I hadn't had that much fun with a driving game since Burnout 3. The Autolog is a super easy way to see your friends times and an easy way to shove their face in it when you beat that time. Driving mechanics are solid and it's mega sweet to pull off a sweet-ass drift in your sports car of choice. Doesn't hurt that the game looks and sounds fantastic too.

I bought the game at $15 and definitely feel I got my money's worth.
Honestly, I would wait until Civ IV complete goes on sale again for about $7.50. It's an awesome game, and the price can't be beat for getting all the content.
Agreed :)

Alternatively in my experience, the Autolog is a shitty way to segment a community and add the hassle of finding and confirming your friends for online play, instead of allowing the use of the pre-existing Steam friends. Oh, and you get more in-game points with no friends because you're always at the top of your friends leaderboard.

On the other hand, the single player was a good experience. The autolog, and my issues with EA's convoluted accounts/personas system soured me on the whole experience.
Okay, So Civ 5 is 75% off which is my usual price point, however I never pay over $10 for a game, so what do I do?

I've NEVER played a Civ game before, is it easy to get into for a newbie? and opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Hadn't played any other Civ game besides the original and this one was easy to get back in to it. Be prepared to lose hours of your life quite accidentally - I still haven't finished my first game since I bought it a few weeks ago. Still a very fair price for a good game.

"hours of your life" is an understatement.

I lost my soul in this game.

Civ V is really enjoyable if you're a newbie to the franchise. If you love the depth and complexity of Civ IV, Civ V may turn you off. I like both, but for different reasons.

What's the deal with the Hitman/Kane & Lynch "deal"? The OP says it's on sale, but the linked page shows no bundle savings.

I didn't care for NFS: Hot Pursuit because to get to the fun Burnout-esque stuff, you had to do way too many "race to point X in Y time and lose time for scraping rails" missions. I want to chase and take down cars, not race the clock. Bore! Ring!

The Shift games left me chilly, but were slightly better than ProStreet. I prefer the GRiD/DiRT series. Undercover was so easy it bored me fast; not even Maggie Q could keep me around.

Edit: I just realized I have Maggie Q's Nikita icon on my gamer card. Heh.

I agree, those kind of of events are always the worst part about racing games. That said, I don't recall too many events like that in Hot Pursuit. I recall doing way more races/hot pursuits than those. I didn't mind them so much this time around though as I really loved the driving mechanics. I'm not sure why.

I played 3-4 hours on the outlaw side, then I switched and did 4-5 hours as a cop and to get to the other events, you were forced to do the damn timed races.

Just tried some Shift 2. Got 2 game crashes, I don't know why, will need to work that out later. I think the driving is way better than Gran Turismo 5. Something about it just feels better, kinda more realistic for me in a sense. Plus it doesn't have all those damn well I don't have x car for the fucking event and there is no car dealer with them either problems.

I will need to play more but right now I am loving it. A great purchase so far.
I was gifted Civ 5 today.

I put in over 200 hours for Civ 4 so I wonder how many hundreds of hours I'll put into this one.
not as many, considering that Civ V is terrible compared to IV. I gave up after 20 or so; I have played (and continue to play) well over 800 hours of Civ IV.
I wish they'd allow you to gift/trade any games that get put in the big bundles.
+1 It's pretty stupid having 2 copies of 1 game where you HAVE to keep both. That kind of stuff bugs the fuck out of me... I'd settle for giving it away, not even necessary to sell it. Just the fact that one copy of a game is sitting in my library to rot... The inner nerd in me is pissed to say the least.

Yeah, I've heard bad things.

Worst-case scenario is I go back to 4 and I'd be fine with that.

That's strange, henrylin22. We know you know about the Steam Trade Thread, because here you were profiteering on copies of Killing Floor three weeks ago: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=279563&page=154

The only explanation I can think if is that you're not trading those Haves - you're giving them away! Making them Steam Deals and therefore appropriate for this thread! That's very generous. If only there were more CAGs like you.

In which case, may I please have that copy of Frozen Synapse? Cheers! :)

I am trading my extras for other people's extras, which is a good deal or people who have extra copies instead of buying. Also I wasn't profiteering you stupid fuck, I don't trade on gamersgate, all my trading is via steam gifts. Btw, I really appreciate all that effort you did to find my post.

That page is (coincidentally) my Favorites link to the trade thread, I only update the page number every ten pages or so. :p

Anyway, sounds good! I've got an extra Portal 1, so I'll trade that for your extra Frozen Synapse. Great deal! :)
Now to keep this thread on-topic - Safecracker looks interesting at $2.50, anyone have any idea how long of a game it is? If it's ~5 hours, I might take a run at it.
About 30 puzzles, apparently: "A bit over 30 puzzles, some of them requiring you to look closely at your surroundings, reading items and look at them closely as well, will keep you busy for a long time." http://gamewiki.net/Safecracker/Review

I think it's difficult to estimate the time for a puzzle game, though. Not everyone is as intelligent as I am. :D

It also seems a bit Myst-y, and it's already a few years old. Might be better off getting the real Myst games from GOG.com. ;)

LOL your a funny man penguin Jim. Unfortunately I already have 2 Portals. Here's my steam gift inventory for your convienience. As you can see, my killing floor includes all the dlcs and for $7.50 was a pretty good deal. Then you and some other asshole just popped in and started raging. -_-

apparently they offered a pack of Elven Legacy and both Majesty games for 8 dollars previously during the summer sale. I might hold off and see if that crops back up during the Winter Sale.

I ended up buying the Elven Legacy Collection. I was debating it but after reading some reviews it seemed like a good time. Plus it is supposedly easy enough for people who haven't played the genre which I would probably qualify as.

Looks fun and I do like a good Strategy RPG once in awhile.
Hey, is The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for 10 bucks, I heard the game is good, and the combat system is so-so
I can't speak for the game itself, as I only have the Witcher 2 and have never played the first one, however I can say that I'm pretty sure the Enhanced Edition has been on sale for as low as $5 before.

Thinking of getting the Elven Legacy too while it's on sale...anyone buy it and like it?

I also was thinking of Civ V. Never played the games before, but I did try the demo but couldn't get into it. Does it get better the longer you play it?

I got The Witcher EE on GOG not long ago for $5 I would keep an eye on that sight, came with a few extra goodies too http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_witcher

Edit: I know a lot of people bashed the combat system but I kind of thought it was fun, changing your stance and timing your mouse button clicks to optimize damage seemed pretty unique to me.

I tried the demo of Elvan Legacy and it wasn't bad seems like a pretty straight forward turned based strategy game. From the single mission it doesn't look like there is a lot of options as your units level up they give you about 3 abilities to choose from each level. I like these types of turn based games so I may pick up the pack as well.

So guys I have a question, for the longest time I have been looking for a game similar to Age of Empires 2 but have yet to find one. I saw that Civilization 5 is on sale, is that game similiar? If not do you guys have any ideas for a game that could give me my fix?

REGARDING THE WEEKEND DEALS:

Civilization V: I LOVE Civ V. I haven't played it as much as I'd like to but I find it a much better experience than Civ IV. It's streamlined, but not in a bad way. Really polished and excellent.

Regarding the NFS games: SHIFT for 5$ is a steal, it's an excellent arcade/sim racer. I liked it a lot more than Grid. I also couldn't get into Hot Pursuit after figuring I'd love it, cos of Criterion. Part of that is it appears to be poorly optimized for PC and slows down a lot.

GRID/DiRT series are soo much better than any new NFS game. Shift is decent though. The driving physics are meh. I bought it yesterday and installed a bunch of mods. Now I have the perfect driving physics. NFS: Hot Pursuit has great cop vs racer races, but the time trials are just horrible.
I have it and recently started playing. I like it, but the voice acting and dialogues are pretty cheesy but for a game like this it really doesn't matter that much. As mentioned units level up and carry over to the next level. Choices when the level up are limited to three options each time. In addition you get the opportunity to level units up to the next tier at various times. So for example from an conscript to hunter (or something like that) in addition to the different skills that you choose from at each level up. One think I like is you can add artifacts to any units. Artifacts can be found in various place throughout the map. There is a balance though between searching the whole map/killing all enemies and completing the level in a certain amount of time. If you complete the level before X turns you get a pretty nice bonus for the next level. The game is challenging too. I just ran through the first few levels and they could be challenging (at least to complete in X # of turns with limited losses). I've heard it gets much tougher as the game progresses.

As mentioned units level up and carry over to the next level. Choices when the level up are limited to three options each time. Perfect, thanks for the info man. I think I will at least get the $1.66 deal. Need to think about buying the whole package for $5 and some change. I doubt I will have the chance to play through all the content, but for the price it probably wouldn't hurt to have it for a rainy day lol.

Also, I think I'll give the Civ V demo another chance...
So guys I have a question, for the longest time I have been looking for a game similar to Age of Empires 2 but have yet to find one. I saw that Civilization 5 is on sale, is that game similiar? If not do you guys have any ideas for a game that could give me my fix?
AoE is actually real time strategy, while Civ is going to be turn based. Usually this means a slower pace and thus more complexity. As for similar games to AoE, it depends on what you liked about AoE. If you liked the historical flavor and customization aspect, Civ might still work for you. If you liked the relatively fast pace, you may want to wait for Warcraft 3 or some of the Command and Conquer games to go on sale. If youre looking for something cheap, you may want to check out Good Old Games because they have some classics RTSs like Total Annihilation, which goes for like $6 if I recall correctly.

I assume you've already looked into Age of Mythology and Age of Empires 3?
Have a look here for some ideas: http://rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_gameslist2.htm

As someone have mentioned, the AoE series are real-time strategy games, while the Civilization series have always been turn-based strategy. There's quite a few real-time strategy games out there, but it depends what pique your interests, such as the setting of the games (sci-fi (Starcraft), fantasy (Age of Mythology), historical (Age of Empires 1+2), etc.).

Of course, Microsoft has recently released a free "MMO" version of Age of Empires. It's called Age of Empires Online. The game plays very similar to the AoE II, so you'll feel right at home. But there are elements of MMO in there, such leveling up (which grants you points to unlock units, buildings, and technologies) and building up your personal "capital" city (it acts as your headquarter). Since it is free, I highly suggest that you check it out.

From your description, it reminds me a lot of the Disciples II series. If anyone is interested in this genre, I would recommend that you keep an eye out for the Disciples II collection (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/95), which goes on sale fairly often.

Diphu, thank you for the information about Elven Legacy, I have been on the fence more than once with this game. I think I might actually give it a purchase this time around.
