Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
how does max payne hold up? it's only $4 so i guess no great loss if it sucks.
the answer for max payne 1 is not well, its barely functional with my mouse with inconsistency in terms of movement especially on the y-axis and it also sometimes just gets stuck.

Its not the mouse as its brand new and doesnt have issue with other games.

also having audio issues with the comic book cut scenes hearing any audio.

I never had mouse inconsistency, but I do remember the mouse movement/shooting felt a little awkward.
Maybe this is their one last crappy drop to get all the stupid people like me to buy it before it gets a better price in the one of the big sale coming up.
Exactly, many times during the Holiday sales you will discover a deeper discount on many games that were on sale weeks or months before.

This is the reason most seasoned Steam vets will only take advantage of Midweek/Weekend/Company sales if the game is at a deep discount (say 75% off).

However, there is always the situation of dying for a new game and the one you have wanted since the beginning of time is on sale for cheap! *cough* Vampires Bloodlines *cough*.

Which DoWII game is worth buying? I'm debating on either the $15 gold pack that has the original and Chaos Rising, or Retribution for $15, or the complete pack for $30...

Wait it out, those are some shitty sale prices. You'd probably only have to wait a few weeks for it to go on sale for a better discount. Trust me.

Double Fine's Costume Quest (long a console download exclusive) hit Steam (and PC in general) today, just in time to be part of the Halloween sale (please, please, please, please, please). Of course, it's $14.99, so odds are it won't hit a sale point low enough for me to jump on.

You probably should wait for a better sale, but if you have to have a Warhammer fix now. I would say it depends, the older DOW 1 series games tend to be more like traditional RTS where the DOW II games are more like tactical strategy games (as instead of base building and getting a huge army rolling you focus on controlling 4 squads of marines.) I personally like the gameplay better in the DOW II series. But you can't really go wrong with either, I will say this though I wouldn't just jump straight into Retribution as story wise it is the weakest IMO, so if story matters start DOW II with DOW II and chaos rising.
Do the Max Payne games even run on Windows 7?
Both games also run perfectly fine for me in windows 7.

AND the Grubbins on Ice DLC is included!

I'll just throw in another vote for Costume Quest. It's simple, but dripping with charm. I played the entire original game in a day in about ~7 hours, couldn't put it down.

Tipping my hat to Costume Quest as well. Bought it immediately after I finished the trial and beat it the same day. The game is pretty easy and can get repetitive, but it's loaded with that classic Double-Fine humor. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't spent the $15 despite how much I enjoyed it. It'd definitely be worth it at 7.50 or less though.
It literally just means to fire the game up once, then close it. You'll want to create your character in Immortal Throne, not Titan Quest, because there are 2 or 3 new disciplines in the expansion to choose from.

Note, though, that if you created a character in basic Titan Quest, you're still fine. When you open Immortal Throne, it will convert your character to the new game.

Don't forget the Fan Patch! You can install it at any time after installing TQ and IT.

Honestly - questions like this are best posted in the Steam forums for TQ. I'm happy to help here when I see a question but the CAG admins don't like off-topic stuff, and the topic is sales, not game support.

Good luck.
Wow, I actually got it to work. If only all patches/mods were as easy as this one to install. Thank you for your help, mate.

I ended up biting on the max payne bundle even though I own max bundle 2 for my games for windows live account. I just never use the damn thing and im on steam everyday lol.

Definitely in for the Max Payne bundle. I probably would have bought it at $5. I've been waiting for these to go on sale for a while now. I missed it the last time they were.
DotD The Last Remnant 75% off ($10)
I bought that a while back from Steam for $10.
I should get back to it - since I never finished it nor got far in it.
It is good, despite it feeling tough, at times... :p

Not interested, I'm waiting for it to hit $5 on sale. I don't even know why it's still $40 normally, when most other games have dropped to $20 by now.

Exactly! :applause:

The Last Remanent is a pretty good RPG, I should replay that some time because I liked the battle system. It's a great buy for $10 but at the same time I can't help but notice it's still $10 for a game that came out in the end of 2008.

Bought Last Remnant a while back (probably for $10, don't recall). I'd recommend it if you like jRPGs and are tired of every "RPG" nowadays being Diablo or Mass Effect. It's a testament to the fact that jRPGs can still be fun.

It's somewhat a sloppy port -- all the tutorials and prompts still refer to xbox 360 controls, for example, and the battle chains (or whatever they're called) are nearly impossible to execute on a PC (I'd recommend turning them on automatic; it makes things much nicer and doesn't detract from the gameplay, IMO). I stopped noticing after the first few minutes, though, and still found the game quite enjoyable.

I would imagine the things the port fix (or changed) far outweigh what it didn't change.

There was a way to edit the ini file to show pc controls iirc. Definitely was some way to change the displayed keys. I frankly don't recall battle chains at all, so they probably weren't that big a problem once you figured it out.

The one thing about this game is that it's very unique in terms of difficulty scaling. You end up getting levels in the game but what happens is that enemies end up scaling to that level, up to a certain point, but key boss fights scaled all the way. This meant that people who grind for levels got raped by the boss fights. The "proper" way to grind in this game was to grind for stats which had a very different methodology. Overall though the game was very enjoyable once you understood it. The graphics was very good and it played naturally on a x360 controller hooked up to the PC. It also had you collecting characters from all over doing tasks here and there to gain them. However like someone already mentioned, it's an old game that should not have that high of an msrp.

I also recall that the PC version extended the gameplay from the x360 version but I can't quite recall what changed.

Good to know about the controls -- I just eventually figured out what corresponded to what.

Sorry, didn't mean battle chains, I meant critical triggers (had to look up the term). I don't know if battles just happen faster on the PC or what, but I found it impossible to hit a critical trigger unless you just guessed. And I don't mean hard, I mean impossible (I'd guess there was a quarter of a second, at most, that you had to press the button shown. I don't think I ever once hit one unless I guessed). I also heard that on the Xbox, certain weapons corresponded to certain critical trigger buttons, but that definitely wasn't the case on the PC. I just set them to automatic and didn't mind it at all.

I never played the Xbox version, so don't know what it fixed and what it didn't, or what it added, but in any case, I'd still recommend the whole package.

As much as I want Costume Quest, as a PC Gamer I've had to wait a year thanks to Tim Schafer/Doublefine's willingness to enslave themselves to their publisher. I honestly thought it would never be ported to the PC. No reason it should have taken this long and, by now, it should be being offered as a 50-75% off Halloween promo. If it doesn't get a discount during a possible Steam Halloween sale then I'll just keep waiting. They've already made me wait a year so I'm used to it at this point.

It's a game that has a Halloween theme to it, and probably owes a lot of its sales to the fact that it was released just before Halloween... If it was going to be a couple months late, it may as well wait the 12 months and have a repeat performance for next years Halloween.

I mean, I enjoyed the game last year on my 360 quite a bit. Would I have bought it at Christmas? Probably not.

But yeah, a discount closer to Halloween would be nice.

Had I known Costume Quest was coming to Steam, I wouldn't have bought it on PSN when it was on sale a few months ago. Still haven't made it a point to play it.

There've been many, but check here, it's more appropriate of a place to ask, as you're more likely to get a bite there. Post there, and sit back and wait, you'll find one in no time if there isn't already a couple of people in there who want in/have copies. Try checking back a couple pages as well. Hope this helps. =]

anyone have an opinion on the tomb raider games that are on sale? i'm thinking of picking one up (currently leaning toward underworld) but would like to hear what people think, if anyone's played them.

i.e., tell me how to spend my money, CAG.

ack. missed the Titan's Quest deal...and the Hit Pack doesn't have STALKER CoP.

hmm...any opinions if these games are worth their individual prices ($13 for TQ Gold and $24 for SoC and CoP)? not really interested in the rest of the Hit Pack.

I've only played Legend and Anniversary but both were quite good. It's been too long between then and now though for me to give you anything specific but what I remember was Legend was a great rebirth for Lara as a character and a fun game to boot and Anniversary, a remake of TR1, was clever enough to earn my respect.

Underworld I had not played more than the demo but underwater levels and hearing one of my less video game-skilled comrades disliking it was enough to put it towards the dusty recesses of my backlog along with a crapload of GBA and PS2 games. Maybe it's good, maybe it's not, but when you have Uncharted and Uncharted 2 right next to it... the choice is not hard at all.

Also I think TRU had campaign DLC that had you playing as doppleganger Lara in extra levels that only came out for consoles, not PC. This was before CD was I think bought up by SquareEnix, or if not that, before SE's full-throated support of Steam.
Not that Steam is advertising it, but Hector: Badge of Carnage is 50% off right now, making it $9.99 for the full series. Probably the best deal you'll see on it by itself (TellTale complete pack might hit 75% off again)
It's showing up $19.99. Not on sale anymore? I know it was, as I seen it was a couple of days ago, but it isn't anymore, on my end at least.

If you bought Hector Ep1 from Telltale themselves, say, back when they had the whole store for 75% off, they'll offer a cut-rate upgrade for the other two eps that puts it around $10.

That said, I fully support Hector. Great series of adventure games. Clever, hilarious, raunchy but rarely gratuitously so.

Odd. It's showing up as 50% off in both the app and the website for me. The only reason I looked is because I saw that the iOS versions are on sale for the next week, so I checked to see if the Steam versions were as well.

Edit: Went to a different PC, and now it's showing as not on sale. Boo! Oddly, SteamGameSales is not showing any history of a $9.99 price point, so I'm crossing my fingers that this means it WILL be on sale shortly.
ack. missed the Titan's Quest deal...and the Hit Pack doesn't have STALKER CoP.

hmm...any opinions if these games are worth their individual prices ($13 for TQ Gold and $24 for SoC and CoP)? not really interested in the rest of the Hit Pack.
I can't tell you what you'll like and not like of course, but let me write some glowing headlines for some of the awesome games in there.

Darksiders is a sweet Legend of Zelda style game with God of War's upgradable combat and gritty mythology. Not visually impressive, but fun nonetheless.

Metro 2033 is damn well near the most atmospheric FPS I've played since Half-Life 2 , and a looker to boot. IF you've got the hardware to run it well, it's awesome.

Red Faction Guerilla (And possibly Armeggedon, haven't played it myself,) is a fun GTA style open world action game with the best shit-breakability I've ever seen. You get to break shit, and you get to break shit good. Plain simple fun.

Company of Heroes and Dawn of War are some pretty deep micro-based RTS'. They don't have the crazy macro-management of games like Starcraft, they focus on rock/paper/scissors mechanics and cover. I personally only care for their campaigns, but they're good campaigns.

The THQ pack is a hell of a deal. If you don't own more then 3-4 of those titles, it's worth the buy.

Hopefully, looks pretty interesting.

Aaaaaand I just bought it for $9.99 since it was still showing up on my laptop at the sale price. Already had episode 1, so getting the other two for $10 is fair enough.
anyone have an opinion on the tomb raider games that are on sale? i'm thinking of picking one up (currently leaning toward underworld) but would like to hear what people think, if anyone's played them.

i.e., tell me how to spend my money, CAG.
I started Underworld twice on PS3, didn't like it either time and gave up for good. I liked Legend and Anniversary on PS2, downloaded each of their demos on Steam this weekend and initially decided not to buy, but I just gave in 5 minutes ago and bought both. Skipping Underworld. I don't know if I should tell you to avoid Underworld. I think I held it to a higher standard because it's a modern game, and I'm more forgiving of the older games for feeling old or awkward.

Ah, that might be why it was $10 for you, as RollingSkull mentioned earlier.

Wait a minute... how dare two plus two equal four?!?! So I assume that means I could gift the series to someone for $10.
