Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

For those wondering, I could never get the 360 controller to work right with Oblivion. I mean, yeah, I got it to "work" but it was never as smooth of an experience as on a 360...even if you map everything to where it is on the 360, things just didn't feel right. KB/M worked fine for me and I am a console gamer, through and through.

Good to know. Oblivion is a 6 year game itself so its very possible it was never made with it in mind.

Unless someone trades me Oblivion, I don't believe I'll get it. Skyrim looks like much the same thing, and I don't want to burn myself out on Oblivion, knowing I should hopefully get Skyrim in the next month or so from Goozex.
I didn't like Oblivion when I played it on 360. But I'm loving Skyrim, so I had to buy Oblivion for $6.25
Same for me. Couldn't get into Oblivion on the 360 but loved the Fallout series. Right now I'm playing Skyrim and it is awesome.

Gonna pick up Oblivion on Steam for the mods.
, but a game that complicated with KBM? *dies*
This made me lol. More complicated the game, the better the kbm is imo.

That being said, if you have a capable PC, you should get it for the PC. Elder Scroll games shine on the PC with all the mods that come out for them. Don't like something? There is a mod to fix/change/whatever you want probably. Wish there was something in the game or could do something you can't? There's a mod for that!

Anyone that buys an Elder Scrolls game on a console that has a capable PC should be dragged out back and shot, sorry I know it is mean but it is such a drastic improvement.

But...but you don't have to wait for it to install! /s

Seriously though, buy it on a PC if you've got one from the past 2-3 years. I'm running it on an E8500 (3.8), a GTX460 and 4GB of RAM and it plays great on high.

In retrospect...I think I spent just as much time messing with mods in Oblivion as I did playing with said mods. They just...changed the game for me: for the better.

The Oblivion cycle is well documented. Download loads of Oblivion mods. Tweak and collect them all day. Play the game for 30 minutes. Uninstall. Repeat a couple of weeks later.
I want to play Skyrim so bad that I want Oblivion. Never played it though.
Funny you say this. I'm listening to the Bethesda Developer podcasts for Skyrim and they make me hungry for Morrowind, not Oblivion. I enjoyed Oblivion very much as I played it, but my heart's not in it to go back like it is for Morowind. I bought Morrowind GOTY for $5 on a Steam sale a couple of years ago and ... someday I will go back and play a stealth character to do the guild quests I never completed... mmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Maybe when TES 6 comes out I'll be hungry for Oblivion. :D

Oh man, this is great news. I've been shying away from Impulse ever since Gamestop acquired it. I'd gladly repurchase Demigod or Sins if a big sale brought an onslaught of new players to revitalize the communities. Does anyone have any good words for Elements? I heard it had a rocky launch, but that seems to be a theme for Stardock games.

So so true. I'm curious to see if the modding tools improve for Skyrim. I had no difficulty geting OBMM to work, but it was a bit of a barrier to entry for non-techie people. We all rave about the mods for PC, but I wish it was ... easier... for people to use them.

I'm thinking in particular about how Civ 5 built the mods into the actual game menus. You can search for and install mods without leaving the program. It has been a huge boost for the mod community.

But all of this is why I usually wait for the GOTY releases. This is my 5th Elder Scrolls game (yes I'm probably older than all of you) and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that Bethesda ships with bugs. By the time they work out the bugs, expansion packs, etc, and get a GOTY, the stable mods will be there for the picking.

I noticed Elements is on Amazon's list for Black Friday. You might check that out.

I'm glad that the dust has settled, and we've got a winner in the controller war.
What's nice is it's easy to set up other controllers to identify as 360 to the game, like I've been using my Dualshock 3 as a 360 pad in all my games.

When you use a controller on a PC game, does the UI change to the console version? It would seem kinda hard to navigate PC menus with a controller.

Depends on the game but most big release games seem to do this. Saints Row 3 is the most recent that I've found that does.
When you use a controller on a PC game, does the UI change to the console version? It would seem kinda hard to navigate PC menus with a controller.
Nowadays, yes. Go back more than, say, 5 years... Not so much.

Most recent Bethesda games don't really have PC optimized UI's so it wouldn't make much difference. Same is true for a lot of other recent AAA titles.

idiot steam question, but if you bought say any of the fallouts, could you install any of the sweet mods on falloutnexus for it?
idiot steam question, but if you bought say any of the fallouts, could you install any of the sweet mods on falloutnexus for it?
As long as you have the game, and the Steam version is compatible with the mods, yes, you can. You just have to go through the trouble of finding out how to install those mods to the game's Steam directory.
I noticed Elements is on Amazon's list for Black Friday. You might check that out.
The hard copy registers on Impulse, which, as I said, I'm now distancing myself from.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity is now on Steam, and it's 25% off right now. Yes, that's right, a Stardock game is on Steam.
Was just about to post about this! Really cool to see. Hopefully there will be a huge discount on it soon. I want it for 75% off. I already bought a boxed copy, AND bought the Trinity version in Impulse (don't ask), and I guess I'll be buying it again because I'm that psychopathic.

Really hoping to see Elemental on Steam as well. It's completely changed since the rocky launch. I bought the $70 collector's edition, sadly enough, so hopefully I can get it on Steam for under $5. Isn't a sequel supposed to be out soon, and free to purchasers of the original? I hope I'm in on that, and I hope it activates on Steam, NOT Impulse.

And finally, would love to see Galactic Civilizations.

Death to Impulse. Their support is terrible. I bought a ton of D&D games on sale (all the Baldur's Gate games, all of the original Neverwinter Nights, all the Icewind Dale games), and none of them work on my PC, and there is like no tech support. Cursed them and decided I should have bought them on GoG. Will never buy anything in Impulse again if I can help it since Stardock is now on Steam.

(Although I have Academagia on Impulse. Would really prefer it on Steam. If not for that, I'd uninstall the damn thing entirely.)

About Infinity Engine games - i.e BG series, Icewind Dale series, and Planescape: Torment - turn off HARDWARE acceleration in your video card's settings.
These games weren't built for modern-day vid cards and modern day OS's.
I've have not tried this on Win 7, but this works on Win XP.

If you're on Win 7 - it's probably worth a shot to try and do the same on Win 7 to run it w/ hardware acceleration on your vid card off.
And/or run the game in compatibility mode backward to Win XP or another older OS [which the game is known to work on].

Can't really speak on NWN on Win 7. Ain't tried it here on Win 7. NWN is not an Infinity Engine game. That's on Aurora.

Good luck!

Yes, and it is quite easy to do.
Hey guys, does Dead Rising 2 ever go on sale? I tried a demo and it was pretty cool, I would likely buy it for $10ish.
I'm pretty sure it never did (maybe 33% shortly after release). Crapcom didn't even bother to discount it during the Halloween sale when nearly every horror themed game was discounted.

It won't be more than 50% off if it does go on sale though.

I'd probably buy it for 50% off. I was surprised that they didn't include it in the halloween sale. I've seen people in here talk as if Capcom never does good sales, I guess this is an example of that.

So I was curious to see how many Steam Games I own that I have never played (in one form or another and not including expansions) and have never launched once.

Now granted some games are like Doom II or Quake 1, but in total it came out to 40 .

So can't wait for the BF sale.

I can see a sale of Dead Rising 2 because DR2 off the record is on Steam. I might pick up DR2 Off The Record if it ever goes on Sale.
Just started playing the Back to the Future game. Gotta say, it seems pretty great and faithful to the series so far.
It definitely is faithful to the series and well done overall. Sometimes, the puzzles are a little too easy, and I never fell in love with how it controls, but I was glad to have played the game. I hope Jurassic Park recaptures that same feeling.

Capcom does put their games on sale almost every single sale....but their games are generally among the most overpriced to begin with and receive the smallest discounts besides.

I was really sad yesterday to see Game Informer gave Jurassic Park a 5.5. No other reviews are in yet, though.

You need more games then! I believe I've only played 40 of 279 my games. There used to be a handy little site that would tell you which games you have played in your library.

I'm half-way through and enjoying it. The QTEs don't always work for me in the sense they some feel forced and rapidly pushing a button has never been fun and likely never will be to me. Still, they mostly do work to provide action, thrills, and actual danger in a genre that doesn't typically have any. The pace is kept up well and you'll never be shuffling back and forth between a few areas trying to figure out what to do. The reason for that is that the game is, at least so far, very easy.

There aren't a ton of puzzles. The first episode's were a joke, but they improved a bit in the second. I'm hopeful for the next half of the game. The difficulty comes from perfectly navigating the action scenes. You can go back and just play specific scenarios to get gold medals on them. From what I've seen so far, getting to the end of an episode will never be a problem.

I got my copy for free and I've known what the game is since lots of footage came out way back in February so maybe I'm not being as critical as some others. I can see how some who are just familiar with Telltale's previous games or just wanted an action game with dinosaurs might be let down. I think it's worth checking out at some point if you're like me and a fan of adventure games and Jurassic Park. Just know what you're going into.

edit: Oh, and definitely stick to the PC version if you ever decide to get it. The 360 and PS3 versions seem to have pretty spotty performance. It runs great on my aging PC though. It even runs better on higher settings than BttF did.

Thanks for the impressions. I know I won't be able to resist the game, being a big Jurassic Park fan. I probably won't get it this holiday sale, but I may very well get it by the summer sale.

I should probably play a few more of my adventure games in my backlog before I grab a whole 'nother set.
I really enjoyed Avadon for full price at $9.99. For $2.50, it's a great buy. But not on Steam? Meh.
I feel the same way, but some might not. This is for those who don't. Also those who just wanna play it at $2.50. ;)
