Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.
That's a strange package. And I swear Aquaria was $9.99 the other day...
Apparently they lowered the regular price from $19.99 to $9.99 recently so the $4.99 price now is 50% off. It has been $4.99 at 75% off in the past but that's the lowest it has gotten.

I wonder if it will go 75% off the new price for the winter sale.

Steamgamesales.com has removed their price history records. I was wondering if we should make a CAG public google doc spreadsheet with price change info for games on Steam for future reference. I know it could be tedious, but I find it really important when making decisions on whether to buy stuff I'm not sure about (e.g. Alpha Protocol). Is this something people are interested in? Let me know...

Something like this would be very helpful. Actually CAG does have a Wiki page/site http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Main_Page and maybe we can have a page on that Wiki with the games and the cheapest they been so far so anyone can edit and update it.

Can anyone who gets the SMB Anniversary Bundle say if they get extra copies? I know at checkout it does point out that I wouldn't receive any that I already own, but upon launching the steam client just a second ago I got an announcement that MIGHT contradict this. It asked me if I wanted to gift my extra copies(though I didn't actually get any) from that bundle specifically, but of course the problem was that I never purchased it and I have gotten such announcements as a bug before:roll:

I really wanted SMB to be 75% off after hearing about the SMB sale :( The bundle is disappointing. I already own every game in the bundle but SMB, Aquaria, and the Bit.Trip games. Only been on Steam for a few months now. Hope the holiday sales can top this. I have high expectations.

Ah, I wondered why I couldn't find the history graphs lately. :(

I'd be interested in having a spreadsheet for sure.

Before people throw themselves into such a project, I glanced at the steamgamesales.com forum and it appears that the price history feature will return.

Future Plans

 • Pages for individual games will return, allowing users to leave both comments and ratings
 • A similar price history section to what we had prior, but with a few more advanced features

Lol nice find. ;)

Yeah I own every game in the SMB Bundle but Bit.Trip Runner.

I'm wondering if I should pick up Magicka, I guess I can play it for a few days and then decide.

Got the same thing just now, I own most of the games in the bundle, but never bought the bundle, kinda worried me for a sec. It appears to be a glitched news page, closed my update news window when I clicked it lol.

I already have all the games, so I won't buy it and can't tell you from experience, but Team Meat's blog is saying that you can gift extra copies: http://supermeatboy.com/112/Happy_Birthday___MAC_ATTACK___/#b

Doubt they would go to the trouble of making a specific graphic for that promotion and then not make use of it. While I can't confirm it (since I'm not buying the pack as I own all but one game) I think it's a reasonable conclusion that you do get to gift the extras.
What's the likelihood of Skyrim being on sale either on Black Friday or the Holiday Sale?
Holiday there might be something as a discount with the inevitable Bethesda Pack (as of maybe down to $54.99 or something) but I wouldn't expect any deep discounts on Skyrim yet.

Many of the newest releases (Arkham City, BF3, and others) are going for $30 in Black Friday sales. Guess Skyrim won't be included in those sales - maybe because it was released a week later than those?

Joking?
Not sure

There's also another site that provides the same utility. The graphs actually look exactly the same as they used to on steamgamesales.com. The site is:

http://www.steamprices.com

Getting to the price graphs is not as intuitive, but it's fairly easy. First you have to search or find a game on the front page. Then on that games banner you'll see 2 icons - one looks like a page, the other a shopping cart. Click on the page icon, and it should take you to a page with information about the game. At the bottom is the price tracker.

I don't know how accurate it is, but it looked reasonable enough to me on the few games I tried it out on.

So that's an alternative for now.
Joking?
Not sure
I hope so. While I've not gotten much out of the sales recently, it's due to my large backlog, which both makes me a bit more hesitant to buy new games, as well as limiting the games that I'm actually interested in that I haven't already picked up. Such as the SMB Pack - I think I own all but one or two games from it, otherwise I'd be all over it.

I think people get used to Steam having incredible sales day after day, and don't realize that there needs to be some down time, especially before the upcoming sales extravaganzas. I have no doubt that the thanksgiving/holiday sales this year will be as great as the previous years (just as I'm sure there will be just as many people bitching that last years sale was so much better.)

edit: oops, see now that someone beat me to this.

Wow.
Man steam has really dropped the ball lately in terms of sales. I am really hoping this changes soon.
I am kind of glad that they are. I am quite engrossed in Skyrim right now and anymore purchases at the moment will just sit there unplayed for a long time like 80% of my Steam purchases!

Deals before larger sales are historically not as good as others.

Also you will find the longer you follow steam deals the worse they get as it is just harder to get excited about them. You either already have the game or passed last time as well.

So true. It's sort of like scouring game stores like GameStop during a console's last seasonal hurrah. I used to love poring over PS1 games during its' last real year of new releases and clearances, but by the time they were in the bargain bin I had a) already bought the game or b) passed on it. Same for Dreamcast. :)

In the end, as a diligent shopper, you have to keep your eyes open for good deals and you're bound to have cherry picker syndrome. The best one can do is to play the games you've purchased and savor the bargain.*

*I do the latter and never get around to the former as a true CAG ;) :p

Typically, there aren't a lot of great deals in the "offseason" (non-holiday sales), and yes, you will get pretty jaded by the deals on the big name games.

Personally, the real value is finding those indepednent games that are relatively cheap and give some good value playing time. Unfortunately, last year's holiday sale was a disappointment in that regard. I'm hoping for better this year.
Rush $2.49 50% off is the Daily Deal

Demo on Steam, good game
Fair price for Rush. I think it's been as low as $1.25 before, but $2.50 is still a solid price for it.

It's one of my favorite puzzlers. There's something really gratifying about getting one set up correctly and seeing the blocks move around like a clockwork machine.
Thanks for the advice. I'll buy it! Loved loved loved the demo.
I was not impressed with the demo, had no intention of buying. Later on when the game had dropped to $15-20 on PS3 I decided to pick it up and WOW, quickly became one of my favorite games this generation. I've put over 140 hours into it and then purchased it again on Steam for $6.99. Still enjoying replaying through it. I liked it on Hard, keeps you on your toes.
That's what I was thinking too. I know this makes me a cheap bastard, but I am holding out for $1.25. ;) I got Toki Tori (same developer) for that price over the summer sale.

If it wasn't so close to the winter sale I'd hop on it, but honestly I am betting it will go 75% off fairly soon so I will pass.

You do realize they have two or three major ones coming up in less than a month, right?
You do realize they have two or three major ones coming up in less than a month, right?
Doesn't change the fact that the sales have been crap lately.
Ditto to the above. As we keep wiping out the store, we have less and less to buy.

My big hold on is for DAO Ultimate and DAO2. :)
By "DAO Ultimate," you mean "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition," right? And by that regards, by "DAO2," I can assume you mean "Dragon Age 2?"

If so, you may see DA:OU sub-$10 this holiday season, as it was on sale during the summer sale for $10.20. As for DA2, I hope you don't mean on Steam as it has been removed quite some time ago.
Doesn't change the fact that the sales have been crap lately.
seriously? what kind of sales have you been expecting? They had the Halloween sale a few weeks ago, not to mention the regular daily deals and the weekend deals (that have multiple games for sale) and the midweek deals.
And has been mentioned, they are going to be having huge sales starting with next week . Are they supposed to have Holiday Sale type deals all the time?
Still wondering if this is a joke
SMB bundle for $24.99? Crap.
Bejeweled 3 for $9.99? Crap.
Magicka deal was this low before, crap.
Rush for $2.49? Crap, considering that it was cheaper with the bundle on sale a couple weeks ago.

With the exception of a couple of sales, Bastion for 75% off, and a few others, the sales have been crap. Yes, the holiday sale is coming up, but the sales have been crap, which I'm thankful for because I can't afford games right now lol.

Halloween sale was an exception, I'm talking about the price drops in the games that have been on sale, mostly the midweek/weekend/daily deals. I'm not saying they haven't been having sales, but the sales are pretty crap. You might want to read carefully next time.

Bastion going on sale for the first time made me really happy. I can deal with the crap if there are more discounts like that.

Also, dammit I'm hyped for the Thanksgiving sale. I'm guessing it'll start on Thursday the 24th and replace the weekend deal.

I read your post just fine. You didn't point out that you considered the Halloween sales an exception or that you were talking mostly about midweek/daily/weekend deals did you? Nope, didn't think so. You might want to word your posts better next time.

I just think it's silly that you're acting like steam has dropped the ball based on what... not even 3 weeks?

Compared to their competition yes. GamersGate, GMG, and Amazon have all had better deals.

Lol... You're being rather closed-minded. I assume that we're talking about midweek/weekend/daily deals because we all know, at least I thought so, that the big sales are good, always. So there was no need to reword my posts, but thanks for the insight.

Also, I did say that I was speaking about lately, not Steam sales entirely like the other person was. I also didn't say that I expected sales to be good, seeing that a holiday sale is coming up, but they have been crappy (for those like you and need clarification, I'm talking about the midweek/weekend/daily deals). =]

Also, how do you get this:
I just think it's silly that you're acting like steam has dropped the ball based on what... not even 3 weeks?
From this:
Doesn't change the fact that the sales have been crap lately.
?

I clearly wasn't speaking about overall sales.

You're right, never mind sorry my bad. I thought you were also the same guy who said " steam has really dropped the ball lately". So yeah I guess my reading does need work

No need to take it harsh man, I still love you. ;) But yeah, I figured you got us mixed up, I don't share his opinion haha. Steam always delivers on big sales, always. ;)

Me too. I hope they have those indie packs like last year for like $5 or $10. I will eat them all up (assuming I don't own games in those packs).
