Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

It does kinda feel that Steam has reached the saturation point on worthwhile "indie" games. The worthwhile games get plenty of coverage and hype, and the non-worthwhile ones... get put up for daily deals.
For whatever reason, that game does not go on sale for cheap. I kept holding out, and the only reason I have it now is because I bought the Bethesda pack during Quakecon.
I was in the same boat and thankfully a CAG hooked me up with the discounted deal with the Skyrim and Rage pre order offer on the Quakecon pack.

Entire thread summarized here.

What happens when you get a bundle and have a game in that bundle already? I'm guessing you just lose out.. but it would be awesome if you could gift that game instead.
Again I disagree and really do think that each year the prices have been higher but eh unless someone wants to do the massive amount of work of looking in to which games were the best each year then comparing the % off and the overall price we will never know.
Man you aren't kidding about it being a massive amount of work. I found 3 links to give an idea of the sales, but they are still flawed because I'm pretty sure the links from 2008 and 2009 don't include the daily deals ( for example the 2009 spreadsheet has STALKER SoC listed at $9.99, but I know I bought that for $1.99 on Dec 23 2009). The link for 2010 shows the daily deals and what percentage were taken off, but doesn;t show the price.

Anyways I THINK that a few years ago, the percentages off were higher, but so were the prices for the most part. For example CIV 4 Complete was on sale for $25 in 2008, but I bought it in 2010 for $6.24.

If anybody is bored here are the links I was talking about ( which make things a little bit easier but are still kind of a pain)

I think he means major sales aside - there's dozens of forums of the internet that showcase the entire sale. It would be hard to find individual indie titles discounted throughout the last three years and then compare their overall discounts amongst years.

In general, you should assume that you don't get "extra" copies of games that you already own in a bundle.

That being said, there have been exceptions. Certain Valve bundles grant you giftable copies of games you already own. This is spelled out in the bundle's description and there is a list somewhere in Steam's FAQ if I recall. The other exception is when you get a free game as a preorder bonus. Again, if this grants you a giftable copy, it's usually stated in the promotion's details. "Already have the original Portal? Gift it to a friend!"
Hey guys,

According to the first post, Witcher 2 can be activated on Steam. I just checked the steam website:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601

and Witcher 2 isn't on the list. Can someone confirm that Witcher 2 purchased from Amazon works on Steam? I tend to believe valve when it comes to their list but CAGers are usually right so I'm looking for confirmation.

--Rick
Retail copies of Witcher 2 do not activate on Steam. The game used to be on the list, which was why I purchased it off of a fellow CAG here. The code however did not activate the game and after a long back and forth with CS I go absolutely nowhere. They said that they were aware of the issue and they would be taking it off of the list on their site. Beyond that however they kept telling me it was my fault and that they should not be held responsible even though it was on THEIR site that stated it could be activated.

After further research apparently some Russian retailers were given codes that were able to be activated on Steam, which is where the problem initially arose.

As far as I would imagine, Amazon would be no different in that their keys will not be activatable on Steam.

Thanks for the info. That's a bummer.

Amazon's got the game for $16 right now but I don't have any other games from amazon so I'll wait.

I can easily confirm that The Witcher 2 (Digital premium) purchased from amazon doesn't redeem on Steam. Either way its a fun game, I don't mind if a game isn't on redeemable on steam.

I've seen it done on some non Valve games too but it's rare and generally a limited time thing. Off the top of my head, I know THQ was giving out Darksiders if you pre-ordered Space Marine and they did the whole 'Already own Darksiders? Get a free giftable copy for your friend!' thing so as you said, it will be clearly marked when you do this.

Also, if you buy a bundle and already own anything in the bundle and it's not one of those giftable deals (which is 99% of the time really) you should get a warning message that says you already own some of the content in the bundle, are you sure you want to purchase it? etc. I got that when I bought the Paradox complete pack over the summer and already owned Magicka.
I'm new to steam but is there a reason why you would want to redeem games you bought from somewhere else on steam?
Many Steam fans prefer to have all of their PC games associated with their Steam accounts. It's convenient, being able to launch them all from the same place, be able to redownload them whenever you need to, track your time played, see which other Steam friends own the game, etc. Some games have unique Steam Achievements too, which is pretty much the only PC Achievement system that matters (outside of Games for Windows Live, perhaps.)

To learn more about Steam, check the second post of this thread.

Cool, thanks for the reply.

Easier management of your games generally. Makes patching, uninstalling and reinstalling much less of a hassle than dealing with the dozens of various ways to acquire digital content out there.

No, it is not. However, the Mass Effect series goes on sale pretty often so I wouldn't be surprised if it will be at a similar price point during the upcoming sales.

Yeah I figure there will be a sale near Mass Effect 3 release window. Thanks for all the quick replies.:applause:
Are those daily deal Steam sales that expire at the end of the day? Or by the end of the week?
Daily Deals last 24 hours.
Midweek Madness sales typically run from Tuesday to Thursday (I think!).
Weekend Deals usually run from Thursday to Monday.

Not sure where you live, but in the UK they are almost always launched at 6pm.

As much as I adore Steam, there is one game genre I love that I don't find much of on Steam. The turn-based RPG. Classic style, you know.

I played the crap out of Avadon, and I've played Winter Voices. I've got my eye on Eschalon, which appears to be turn-based.

Any other recommendations? Not interested in The Last Remnant.

Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves The World are pretty competent old school mock-RPGs. The Penny Arcade games aren't awful. Faery is another of those "factually not a good game but still pretty enjoyable" things. Actually I guess it was de-listed from Steam so nevermind.

There are plenty of turn-based strategy RPGs if you are interested in those.

Heh, you know my games. Already have Breath of Death and Cthulu through the Xbox. Played BoD but not Cthulu yet. Have Penny Arcade on Steam but not played yet. I actually enjoyed Faery on 360 pretty well, despite all its issues.

I don't like strategy RPGs, really.

Any more from anyone?

But yeah, looks like I've got Cthulu and Penny Arcade to play. Just wish I had more.

Have you checked out Desura?

I have yet to bite on anything for their service, but they have a lot of old school style RPGs. I cant say if theyre worth it. I found the site looking into "The Mirror Lied" and its spiritual successor "To The Moon". There is a sale going on right now which includes "A Typical RPG" and "Dreamscape" which may both be what you are looking for.

damn I cant frikin wait for the steam sale. these trash daily deals are so anti-climactic. Also I cant wait for Batman AC to finish dloading. 16GB takes FOREVER to dload. If only they let us preload it.

I would have given this Daily Deal a try if it was under $4, the art work looks nice and I enjoy a good puzzle. It is just over priced for what it is IMO.

That's a bit disappointing. I own all of them.

Another heads up: you can preorder the Indie Royale bundle right now. You can't see any of the games yet, and the lowest price seems to be $3.99 right now.
Not saying you should, but you can.
A lot of the time before and after big sales they choose to skip it.
A little birdie tells me that Thanksgiving sale starts tomorrow.

I thought really really really hard about SS3, but I decided to wait with Batman finally releasing today (and my code from my video card purchase not showing up yet, yay!) and already embroiled in SR3 and BF3. Sorry, Croteam. Give me some time and I'll buy you at full price.
That's a bit disappointing. I own all of them.
Just because they're not mind-readers doesn't make it a great bundle.

You should get the Geneforge Saga. Five games for 20 bucks. It's by the same guy as Avadon. Few of the games are quite old though so you might need to brace yourself for a bit more rough edges than Avadon had.
hmm I'v been on the lookout for a good deal for some time, but the Cag in me wants to wait to see if steam does a better deal. what to do? if only amazon had it at 19.99, would be a insta buy for me..
Let me answer this. Do you want to play this right now at this current moment?
