Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

At that price, now I know Limbo is gonna be in an upcoming indie bundle, but I won't pass it up. Altho I gotta remember to play it soon.

Anyone wanna give a mini-review on Payday: teh heists? 19 people on my list have it, but none have yet "recommended" it.

I'm not sure if it has been answered or not but if I remember correctly Splinter Cell: Conviction had the DRM where you always had to be online all the time otherwise you could not play the game.

Then due to criticism Ubisoft changed the DRM where you only had to activate the game online once and that was it.

So does this DRM still apply for Conviction?

Ubi has not quit that DRM. It still applies to HAWX2 and probably still applies to ACB and ACR.

But, Ubisoft DID remove that DRM from AC2 and Conviction. Both games do NOT need the internet connection. There's still some Ubi activation but it's not especially bad.

Note that HAWX1 is completely 100% DRM free and comes with my recommendation, for what it is worth.

Just finished several rounds. It's exactly what it looks like. Left 4 Dead with cops and crooks rather than zombies. Great fun.
which civ v dlc is recommended, or doesn't add much?
I bought the nations and the 'wonder' pack, but not the maps. People make maps all the time.

The Witcher 2 and especially Rage discount look good. Promising enough for the wintersales :p Hoping they will be even lower then. Right now I'm having fun with my only buy on this sale: Dead Island :D awesomeness!

I still need to finish the Witcher 1 though... I just somehow can't get myself to keep playing as I play on and off instead of hours after another. This makes it hard for me to get into the feeling of the game and story each time.

Dead Island is awesome.
I wish the storytelling and character depth was done better.
They probably could've done that in clever ways to not slow-down the co-op [whether via in-game audio logs, books, and other stuff for the players playing the game solo to check out], but that's minor stuff.
The rest of the game is outstanding, though - and addictive as can be.
To me, this IS the definitive zombie game.

I ended up getting payday, civ 5 dlc, and kand and lynch 2. Thinking about picking up another Kane and lynch for a buddy and the witcher as well for a cousin.
Got The Witcher for the husband. Not sure if I want it. I'm afraid to try a real PC game. My mind will explode pushing z for inventory or something.
Congrats! The Witcher has the worst controls of any game ever and you will go insane trying to fight it. I hope for your sake mouse button 3 isn't your wheel.

Meh, I got through it okay. tbh, I dislike the console-y controls of The Witcher 2 more. *shrug*

Seems like once traffic settles down the probability of my cart wiping drops too. Since it was fairly stable, I went ahead and grabbed Limbo, Witcher 1, and H.A.W.X. Not too shabby.

I didnt have any problems playing Witcher 2 with mouse and k-board.
I dont remember Witcher 1 being so hard to control either. Either way, im glad Witcher 1 is so low. I can finally add it to the library and finish playing it.
I bought the nations and the 'wonder' pack, but not the maps. People make maps all the time.
Could you be more specific? It's not clear which packs are maps and which ones have actual content.
Could you be more specific? It's not clear which packs are maps and which ones have actual content.
Because clicking on them and reading what they include is just to difficult for you? I clicked on one of them and it said in its description "The Cradle of Civilization map packs are Firaxis-designed maps of real-world locations. You can play random leaders in these settings, or choose leaders appropriate to the history of these areas. The maps can also be opened up in World Builder, where you can even create specific scenarios."

Hmmm, I wonder if that is possibly a map pack then...

Late to today's specials. Hmm Cities XL has always intrigued me, but I think I will hold off for the Christmas sale. Holding off for $5 for Fear 3. I guess while the game selection today is good, it just didn't hit my price point. Will be in for some non deals tomorrow.

It does indicate that it includes a map pack. It does not indicate whether that is all it includes.

I read that they removed the always-on from Brotherhood and they claim that Revelations won't ever have it to begin with

Which splinter cell games are worth having? I heard Chaos Theory and Conviction are the best. That true or are the others worth getting too? Also how do they control with a keyboard and mouse?

Edit: Also how is Hawx 2? I have the first one but I heard 2 wasn't nearly as good.
Congrats! The Witcher has the worst controls of any game ever and you will go insane trying to fight it. I hope for your sake mouse button 3 isn't your wheel.
Guess you haven't played Skyward Sword. :D
Guess you haven't played Skyward Sword. :D
haha so true. i wanted to throw my gold wiimote through the tv after trying to win the race at the beginning.

"Which splinter cell games are worth having? I heard Chaos Theory and Conviction are the best. That true or are the others worth getting too? Also how do they control with a keyboard and mouse?"

The original still holds up. I'd say Chaos Theory is the best followed by the original. Conviction is different but decent, especially if you have someone to co-op the story-prequel with. Controls fine with mouse and keyboard.

Yeah, if you haven't played any at this point I would say go with Chaos Theory and Conviction.

The first three are really iterative, I would compare it to the differences between any current gen trilogy. Each game they made graphical and gameplay improvements, but it really boiled down to pretty much the same thing for three games.

Double Agent was NOT good in my opinion.

And Conviction was okay.

Thanks for the splinter cell recommendations, always wanted to play but didn't want to get stuck with a bad one.

Edit: Would it be worth it to just go ahead and pick up the 4pack?

Picked up Limbo, SS: Chaos Theory, and Witcher 1 on recommendations.

Personally I just plan on picking up one of them, I have a feeling I would be bored with the SS gameplay style before I would get through 4 of them (that's what happened with Assassins Creed, one game was enough for me). If not, I can always buy more during the holiday sale, I have a feeling they'll be on sale again.

Splinter cell has a continued story arc about Sam the main character so I personally would suggest it if you want to get all the pieces of the story.

Yeah but isn't steam missing the game that comes between the original and chaos theory?

Splinter Cell does NOT have an overarching story. You're fine with just CT. I'm also a big fan of Conviction but in CT you're Garrett. In Conviction you're Jack Bauer. They are very different stylistically.

HAWX 2 is rubbish compared to HAWX1. Wastes your time with so much utter nonsense and then attempts to ape Ace Combat, but only at the LAST level, and fails miserably. The only good thing it adds is a survival mode but it also has Ubi always on DRM.

HAWX1 isn't GREAT either but it's quite fun. The missions are uneven as hell, with some amazing and some garbage.
Yeah but isn't steam missing the game that comes between the original and chaos theory?
Yeah, they're missing Pandora Tomorrow, not sure why, but they are.
lol! $5! You might be waiting another 2 or 3 years before that happens.
By then I might actually be ready to play it.

Some of the these deals I'm not jumping on cause I figure they'll repeat during the Holiday Sale or be beaten. Sanctum for instance I can hold out another month. I figure it'll hit $2.50 again or the bundle with all the current DLC will be at an even better price. If not, well I only lost a month.

Tempted with the Witcher II, but I hesitate to add to my RPG backorder when I know I will bite on Skyrim if it goes on sale at year's end.

What do my co-CAGgers think of Witcher II?
haha so true. i wanted to throw my gold wiimote through the tv after trying to win the race at the beginning.
Huh, I don't have a problem with the controls. It'd be nice if there was a right stick for camera but whatever.
Wow - Witcher controls were easy enough. Just have to write down and remember which ones are speed, heavy etc.
The size of the enemy usually gives away which combat style to use. Big guys = strong style; thin/short guys = fast style. +3 enemies = group style.
What do my co-CAGgers think of Witcher II?
I thought the game was really good (still playing through it actually). I like the story because it is mature: racism, assassination, greed, politics, etc.

The combat system is quite challenging and it is more action than turn based (The Witcher 1). Be ready to die a lot though, which can be quite frustrating at first.

By the way, Amazon is selling it for less than on Steam. You might want to grab it there or wait for further sales on Steam for best bang for the buck.

If my game isnt already on sale, what are the odds of it being a daily deal tomorrow?

I have been waiting on something for the any of the RACE titles or even XPand Rally, but I havent seen anything since I started watching a few months ago.
Steam has saved me money this sale by offering things I already own or do not want! :applause:
Same here... and I'll add "by offering games that are cheaper elsewhere but I want them on Steam"
Yeah, they're missing Pandora Tomorrow, not sure why, but they are.
I've heard it has to do with some rights for music on one of the levels?

Witcher 2 is one of the best RPG's this year.
It's definitely better than Two Worlds 2 and Dragon Age 2.

The only PC RPG that could be better than Witcher 2 being released this year...is Skyrim.
I haven't played Skyrim yet, so...I don't know yet.

I recently completed this game. Didn't have any trouble with the controls, although they are unique. They don't map very well to a controller.

Obviously, you've never played the first Gothic.

I already played through Conviction on the 360 when it first came out but have since sold it. The main reason I would pick it back up on Steam is for local coop with a friend. I know the 360 had local coop but can anyone confirm that the Steam/PC version can have split screen too? Thanks!

I'm not expecting anything new tomorrow. Steam loves doing final day recaps, although I think most people wish they would just do new deals each day.

Despite figuring there won't be new deals tomorrow, I'll wait and see before I buy the games I'm holding out on.
