Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Same here, the only one I bought was Cave Story + but that I felt was clearly not going to be in one of these bundles. Looks like I am going to snag both bundles, wasn't going to grab the Humble Bundle but now that they added Dungeons of Dredmor I cannot resist.

THANKS! Grabbed this one, left the others for someone else, was looking at this game awhile back.

I think the bundles are starting to hurt the indie market a bit. There are just too many and too frequent now. They are hard to stand out. The original Humble bundle felt like it meant something but now I just look at them as packages of games. Any meaningful impact they had is gone. On top of that it puts hesitation in your mind when buying any indie game.

In general, I agree, but I wonder if the developers are getting more overall money from their games by including them in the bundles. I don't know how the pot gets divvied up, but with the Humble Bundles selling over 100,000 copies and IndieRoyales doing 30k+, maybe they're getting enough smaller cuts to outweigh the few larger cuts they would make from direct sales. They're definitely getting more awareness.

Just bought Dungeons of Dredmor in the Autumn, already own Breath of Death and Eufloria.
Oh well, still going to keep getting the packaged deals.

I think this is very true. I have good self-control when it comes to buying games. I don't have much of a backlog, only enough that I always have something new to play. I only bought one game in the Autumn sale.

I own every single Humble and Indie Royale bundle, but there are probably only 4 or 5 games in all of them that I'd have purchased individually because of my buying and playing habits. I like supporting the developers, the humble charities, and it gets me to try games that I'd otherwise miss, which may lead to me buying their future games. At the very least they now have a few bucks from me that they wouldn't have otherwise.

I want DoD, but I don't suspect that I'll play any of those other games. I'll just hold off for the xmas sale. I mean, if I wasn't willing to pay $2.50 during the Tgiving sale, I can't want it that bad...

I agree that it helps get them sales but with so many bundles it is giving people the attitude of don't buy unless its in a bundle. This not only means that they are losing sales until they are in a bundle but the price point for their games has been cut from $15/$10/$5 to $1 or less. I would be surprised if they make for than $0.25 to $0.50 cents a purchase in these packages. Granted at 50,000 bundles that is $12,500 to $25,000 dollars but that isn't much if that is their only means to sell.

Damn it, I just bought Runespell and Breath/Cthulhu. I knew this would happen. Looks like I'm just going to have to not pick up any Indie games that aren't in these bundles since it just ends up pissing me off when I buy one on Steam and then see it in one of the bundles.

Yah but let's put it into perspective, they aren't going to sell that many games UNLESS they are in a bundle. Plus, they probably make a good 25-75k from the bundles. From the people that spend a lot to the 100k people that buy it.

Plus, it is nothing but positive market for them to be in a donation bundle.

Edit: I guess it all depends how many people would by it other wise. $10 a pop would need to sell 2500 games. I have no idea if that's a lot for an indie game.
Can anyone tell me if Bloodbowl plays anything like Mutant League Football?
Similar visual/thematic styles but its based on a board game so no to gameplay.
Any good games for young kids 5-7 age. I have crayons physics. What else?
Osmos is is pretty conceptually simple, fun, and pretty. I haven't finished it, but I can't imagine any questionable content comes up in it later on. I've played it both the PC and iPad versions. The touch screen controls are superior if you have access to a device that it's on, but the PC version works fine, too. Some of the later levels do get a bit tougher and the touch screen controls are easier.

Now are you looking for easy games or just games that tend to not involve violence of some sort?

And I would say something like Chains or Zuma would be good.

Well you have to consider how many people work on an indie game. I mean sometimes it's like 1-5 people at max (where a 12-25k split is still a large sum of money). Look at this way too. If I can have my game make $12,500 off a indie bundle which I made myself or with a friend, look at how much industry experience I have now, and well imagine having that on a resume.

I mean yes the bundles do lose their personality but then again it's cheap games for us :D

Osmos is a fun game, but I wouldn't say it's for children. Once you get to the later levels they get hard, and I mean very damn hard. Something a 7-8 year old could not do.

Easy mainly. Low violence, cartoon violence. But not much past that. Need them to go to bed at night....:bouncy:

If they can understand how to play Solitare, then I would give my recommendation to Faerie Solitare. It's not a difficult game by any means, it's just solitare but you get to collect and raise cute little pets along the way and it has a very light story to it.

Alright, just wanted to know before recommending something like VVVVVVV which can just be extremely frustrating after awhile. Although is certainly isn't violent.

I dont know about you but I wouldn't deem it a success to make a $12,500 split on a game that took six months at least to make. It isn't sustainable. Eventually you kill the market. I agree that this is money they might not have made otherwise for many of these games as it is as much marketing as anything else but it does set a dangerous precedent that can hurt the really good indie games out there that shouldn't have to bend to this sales model or this pricing scheme.

No one buys the really good and well reviewed XYZ Indie Game because they are used to getting ABC, DEF, GHI, and JKL in a bundle for much less. It certainly benefits the consumer in the short term but in the long run the developer of XYZ decides its not worth his time to make games or he should just put out more games but make them smaller and/or not put as much polish in them.

At the end of the day, I guess it isn't much different than Steam sales in general so its probably a wash but it concerns me slightly.

I went through my Steam games list and typed up every game I thought would fit the requirements and then my post didn't go through. If I had to recommend three from the list I'd go with Costume Quest, Flight Control HD, and Trackmania. The latter two are a little more difficult.

I keep forgetting that CQ came to Steam. Definitely look into that one. It's no more violent than any afternoon kids cartoon. Probably less so than a few. It's also fun for adults.

Yep it's a good game for a kid in that age range and there's not much challenge to it. It's simple and fun (and also pretty funny/charming) but it's also short.

The only downside is that it requires a lot of reading, otherwise my son would probably be playing it.
Guess I'm not getting the Indie Royale bundle, and I'm sure a lot of you are in the same boat. Didn't we all just buy Runespell: Overture and Breath of Death/Cthulhu the other day? I'm kinda interested in Eufloria, but the low reviews scare me away.
Boooo, I had that on my Wish List, but was waiting for a performance patch to release before buying it. :(

I checked back, and even though I didn't pay the minimum for the Humble Bundle, I did receive a code to activate Dungeons of Dredmor. I didn't receive Aquaria and Crayon Physics though, which is okay since I already own them.
For the one or two people that care, Winter Voices has been removed from Steam.
Whoa, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I bought up the series during the summer sale along with the ticket-gained DLC. Haven't played it yet, though.
I might never even hear about it should they continue work on the game.

I hear you. When the initial Humble Indie Bundle occurred, it seemed like the neatest thing, and I paid $35 to be part of it. Now they just feel like offsite Steam sales that are hard to keep track of.

My situation exactly. I opted not to buy DoD at half off last weekend, and lo and behold I have it free.
I hardly put anything into buying this last bundle, too, just throwing a dollar at charity since I already owned almost all of it but wanted a Steam key to replace my boxed copy of Darwinia. Maybe I should go back and double it...
Any good games for young kids 5-7 age. I have crayons physics. What else?
My son (now 7) loves Plants vs Zombies, World of Goo, and Fortix/Fortix 2.

But will be look at some more.
For the one or two people that care, Winter Voices has been removed from Steam.

There's a letter from the developers which says they basically ran out of money.

well .... dammit.

I have the prelude and one episode. Was waiting for it to finish before I got more. Probably like everyone else.

I'm not surprised though. They had an erratic release schedule. And I said from the start that they should give away the prelude for free (I mean, *duh*, right?) It appears that finally there's a free demo, but that was a long time coming.

So the gaming industry says cheap DLC is a huge success, but here is a lesson on how NOT to do cheap DLC. Perhaps if they'd finished the whole thing and released six episodes monthly, discounting earlier episodes as each new one came out. Oh well.

To tell the truth, his favorite games are the ones he plays WITH me. He sits with me and coaches me through some games... ones that are generally too hard for him to play, but he knows what to do. budding gamer-kid gets to spend some time with gamer-dad.

Some good examples of this are:

Defense Grid
Puzzle Agent (this gets a little weird and scary at the end, but he likes that)
Osmos
Portal & Portal 2

Oh - Flight Control HD is a great choice, too, and one that he can play. And it's very inexpensive.

He'd probably enjoy Recettear, too, but I haven't started that yet.

My son (4) loves all games Lego. They are great. Steam has most of them. His other favorite is Toki Tori. It's too hard for him so he just watches me play. good fun

While my son liked the puzzle part of it, the game scared the crap out of him. For a while, he was scared that the "red gnoves" were going to get him.

Portal & Portal 2

After seeing the commercial, he so badly wanted to play Portal 2. Haven't gotten it yet.

He'd probably enjoy Recettear, too, but I haven't started that yet.

He's watched me play it. He thinks the shop stuff is boring, but he likes the dungeon aspect of it.

The problem with playing with my son is that he gets frustrated easily. If things aren't going well, he whines about it and wants me to turn off the game.

Tried Eufloria today from that Indie Royale bundle. For what it is, it's very peaceful and calming kinda like Osmos. It's not a very deep game but for what is it, I am enjoying it.

Edit: Tried the other games besides the RPG double pack.

Really Big Sky is a shmup. It seems the game is randomized every time you play which is cool but it's still a shmup.

Runespell is not my type of game. I mean I like the idea, it's just these games tend to piss me off because the opponent draws the god card to make the ultimate combo and kill you.
I'll second the Lego games. The students at my school, K through early elementary, always seem to enjoy them.
Speaking of Lego, anyone know what the heck the holdup is with Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 on Steam?

Had a lot of fun with Bully. I picked it up earlier this year during a steam sale. I still need to finish it though...
I liked Bully a lot on PS2 but I read about the PC version a while ago and it sounded like it had a lot of problems. Does anyone have personal experience?
The shittiest PC port in existence that I have played, and I have played GTA 4.

It doesn't matter how good your PC is, the game will crash and lag like a motherfucker.

Good luck at one part in particular where you defend some kid giving a speech using your slingshot in first person. Its tough to do when you're getting 5 fps.

I just started playing this a few weeks back, and have been hooked.
Most of my problems came from the control scheme; I was trying to play with the mouse and keyboard. It was a disaster. I switched to the xbox controller and it works perfect.
There are a few slow downs with a lot of action on screen, but so far I haven't had any other problems.
If you have any love for GTA, it's worth the price.

My husband and I played the game at the same time, both of using Steam.

I played the game with the 360 controller, which worked fantastic. He played using KBM. If I recall right, even if you played the game with KBM, it told how to perform certain commands as though you were using a controller anyway.
