Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Any thoughts on the game? I remember being interested in it but it took so long to get to this price point that I've either lost most of it or forgot why I was. I may wait it out for sub $5.
I used to have the gotta catch em all mentality when I was younger. I had to buy every last good game that came out and I also bought quite a few games day 1. As iv gotten older though iv accepted its never going to be possible to catch them all and more importantly that its a huge waste of money. Every year we add more and more people to this big blue marble and every year tech grows more then anyone could imagine. This combination means that every year we see more and more and more and more video games get released. Even if you wanted to argue it was possible right now to play every good game released....that wont be the case for long. Iv just accepted that its better to play things a year or two behind everyone else and spend $5-$10 then to pick stuff up for $60 because I have to have the newest and coolest thing. ANd iv learned to accept since I will never manage to catch them all I should just be happy having something to play and dozen or more games on my backlog at any time(which isnt a waste of money when you spend $3-$15 a game).
Amen brother. Plus - I like that by being selective I only find myself playing the very BEST games, or at least the ones I'm most interested in.

In a moment of weakness I picked up Dungeon Defenders for myself and a good friend. It's a blast. After about 3 hours we completed our first boss battle. We each got little class-specific, level-appropriate rewards and ooooooh just for a minute there I felt that little twinge-rush that MMOers get from grinding levels and doing raids. I thought I was immune. Aah, dopamine! I am your slave. At least for a few days until I get bored.

I played with KBM but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's better with a controller... I'm going to try that out tonight, solo, and see how it goes.

I prefer my 360 controller over the KBM setup. Of course I tend to think that about most third person games. It's much nicer to lean back and play for a few hours. I can hit buttons and flick the stick about as quickly as the in-game build menus load. After awhile with a character I can build anything without even looking or thinking about what I'm seeing.

While were on the subject of sale strategies, I actually use the Wishlist function to control my spending.

Basically, if I see a sale for a game I hadn't considered buying before, I add it to my Wishlist. I then only buy items that are on sale and on my wishlist. Ive found this usually means I get it slightly cheaper as it comes around on sale for a second time and I dont build a ridiculous backlog based on impulse buys. To further control it, I only buy items on my wishlist when they break certain thresholds in terms of percentage off or cost.

A good example recently was Musaic Box. I almost bought it during the Summer Sale when it was 50% off or $2.49. Instead, I added it to my Wishlist. Then when it came up on sale recently it satisfied my conditions of being on my wishlist and being at least 75% or below $2.00. In the end I saved an additional $1 or so and my backlog is only two or three games as opposed to my old PS3 backlog of 12 games.

Damn, missed Dungeon Defenders. I've been waiting for a sale on that one too. Hopefully it will be part of some Christmas or New Years sale.

edit: Got it from someone who bought a 4 pack, thanks to everyone that messaged me
So is the Christmas sale starting tomorrow? I know a bunch of you work for Steam and have the inside scoop. ;)
I'd love a hint or two as well :)

*puts glass against laptop monitor and listens intently*

I don't think we are going to see many leaks after the big indie bundle leak last year that ended up posted all over the web.
I don't think we are going to see many leaks after the big indie bundle leak last year that ended up posted all over the web.
I think I remember that. I was just getting into Steam then. The bundles were announced waaay in advance.

Why would the Christmas Sale start tomorrow - it's started around the 3rd week of December for the last three years. The Scavenger Hunt started last year on the 6th (which was the first Monday of the month or "today").
I don't think we are going to see many leaks after the big indie bundle leak last year that ended up posted all over the web.
I'd like to think that was an intentional leak because that bundle (Potato) ended up being part of the Portal ARG.
Has anyone ever seen discounts for Football Manager 2012? I know I could snatch it at $29.99 (last time I checked at least) but I currently need to sell things I have in order to buy anything, hence my sig :whistle2:(.

I'd jump on it for $19.99.
My wife bought it for me as an early X-Mas gift from Amazon when it was $34 a couple of days after the release. So far I have put 127 hours in, so I would say that I probably got my extra $5 for it (since it was $30 in the Autumn sale)

As for a cheaper price, you *might* get lucky and have a 50% discount on the game during the holiday sale, if I remember correctly, last years edition was discounted, so you never know.

FM is the ONLY game I would ever, ever, EVER pay full price for (and have done since it first launched all those many years ago)

Personally, I don't mind if the Christmas sale is put off a couple weeks. Some folks had suggested it was starting the 6th, so I was checking if we had word.

The sale isn't going to start until the current "event" is over. It started on 12/01/11, lasts 10 days, which means that the sale will probably start on or the week of 12/11/11, probably Monday or Friday though. My guess is Monday, 12/12/11.

A developer announced that a game (or games, I don't recall) of his would be on sale from the 19th to the 3rd. Seems like a good indication of the span of the sale.

Sounds good. Kill us starting the week of Christmas. :applause:

I don't think they said it was only a 10 day thing. The announcement from the first day says, "The Daily Wishlist Giveaway begins today on Steam. Each day 10 people will win the top 10 games on their wishlist!

To enter, you must have a Steam account and a Wishlist with at least 10 games, and each day you will need to visit thegamepage of the featured daily deal. The Giveaway begins December 1st and will continue into the holiday season."

I am flying out to Florida for vacation with the family on the 18th, I really do not want to be checking the laptop each morning before we head out but for the Winter Sale, I can spare some time!

This has been my strategy as well. I do this for daily deals that I figure I'd like to grab cheaper later on as well as DLC for games that I own to help me remember what I don't have. I tend to miss noticing DLC during big sales since I tune out the games I already have.

It also helps when something I had passing interest in goes on sale. If I didn't add it to my wishlist before, do I really want it now or am I just getting caught up in the sale excitement? Most often I can determine it's the latter.

wtf

Now I'm seriously never going to buy another indie title direct from Steam. Although I said that and then bought LIMBO...

In it 99% for inMomentum. The zombie shooters look generic, but the platformer and doodling game look good. I could never see the appeal of those hacker games, but I'm willing to give em a shot.

I have Saira through another bundle. Sort of an an adventure platformer. I got frustrated at one point and stopped playing, but atmosphere and setting is cool enough.

Man, it's true. All these indie bundles are killing off the need to buy indie games at retail or even Steam sale prices. It seems they all end up in bundles. I wonder how much this will hurt them in the long run.

I doubt many are getting hurt. The titles in the Gala bundle are almost all pretty old and pretty niche, exception being InMomentum which is rather new. A lot of the games that get into these bundles have already saturated their markets. If you didn't buy a SNES style RPG feautring Cthulhu when it was 3 dollars (and even 1 dollar at times), chances are the only way you're ever going to get it is when included in a bundle like this. It's a good way for indie titles that fill small niches to get some extra exposure and cash. I mean, I'm sure a lot of people are interested and will buy something like Limbo on sale. Is anyone really going to buy Zombie Shooter by itself these days?

There's still a ton of high profile indies that sell well and haven't been included in a bundle like this (and likely never will). I mean, you're probably better off holding off on certain genres perhaps or if it's super niche, but it's a bit over the top to assume we'll see everything in their eventually.

Guys, I got a quick question I hope you answer! :)
In a couple of days I'm going back to my town in the countryside to have a rest after a crazy university semester .. and I can only bring my laptop with me obviously LOL.

Here are the specs:
-AMD A4-3300M APU 1.90ghz Uhmm I can watch 1080p videos with no lag at all in this baby, it's only 13'' so the resolution I will play at won't be that high.
-4GB RAM
-64bit Windows 7 Home Premiun

Yeah that would be it .. I'm currently looking at some good indie games (considering they ask for lesser specs than games like BF3 or Crysis 2). I have Orcs Must Die and waiting for a Magicka and Bastion sale .. but I have to complete my wishlist and I only have 3 indie games hehe.

So I'll need some help, because I'm a total stranger to these games :D

May want to post some info on your video card.

Grab the Humble Bundle before it ends in 7 hours either way though. Aquaria and Dungeons of Dredmor are highly recommended and lightweight.

I am on an ancient laptop myself and these are games I enjoy that run well enough on it that I bet will have decent sales by Christmas off the top of my head:

Torchlight
Defense Grid
Terraria
Space Pirates and Zombies
Recettear an item's Shop Tale
May want to post some info on your video card.
Uhm I don't really know much about my video card, since it's integrated to the CPU. All I know it's an A3 APU chip, some kind of new AMD technology for laptops as mine! I think it's pretty decent since I can watch HD videos on Youtube there without major lag.

Cave Story (free) and Cave Story+ (updated graphics and modes, $10) will both run great. You can try out the free version and decide if you need the updated graphics and more modes. The story is the same as far as I know.

It also seems incredibly stupid that these bundles never feature similar style of games. I rarely donate more then a buck or two because I am unsure I will like most of the games. I mean put similar games together and then people can think "O I love platformers and this has 5 in one, ill gladly pay $5-$20 for that" vs "hmmm this has 2 shooters, an odd hacker game and two weird ass looking ones...not sure what I will like".

An argument can also be made for the other side though. If I see one game I may be interested in, I'll purchase the bundle regardless of the other titles. If a bundle has nothing but 5 shooters, I won't give it a second glance. Plus it exposes people to weird looking games that they wouldn't have tried otherwise, and may find fun.
