Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Anyone have any opinions on Mafia 1 or 2?
I played the original back in 2002 when it came out and while it was a neat take on the Grand Theft Auto style with Depression era music, the strict driving with ancient vehicles wasn't much fun. You had to obey traffic laws and speed limits lest the cops come after you and there was an auto race section that I couldn't win and thus I gave up playing. The graphics haven't aged very well; I found the install directory in a secondary drive recently and fired it up and while not as bad as looking at the OG Half-Life now (when the hell is that Black Mesa TC ever going to come out?!?), it's not pretty.

I've got a couple hours into Mafia II and it's OK. I think I got it for $4 or so from some European site that had keys that activated on Steam. Graphics are good, but when you rebind the keys if you bind Use to a side mouse button, nothing comes up for a context popup. Driving is better and the 1940's post-WWII setting is more interesting.
There are 70s that have been having trouble with the Dungeon Defenders one though. Plus even to get to 30 is what 6 hours?
The achievement is pretty easy to do around level 30 for a tower apprentice, but with my limited knowledge of the other classes, only the squire has a shot at soloing it at level 30. The Huntress would have difficulty soloing it at even max level, and the Monk would need to blanket the area in slow bubbles and make passes to clear them out every now and then (the enrage aura might work as well, but I haven't played a monk enoughk). A level 30 monk definitely wouldn't have the skill points to raise everything he'd need to make a smooth run.

On the subject of difficult achievements, does anyone have any tips for X3: Albion Prelude - It's Cold Outside? I've looked at tips for getting the achievement, but after spending three hours blowing up other ships and getting blown up myself, I'm at a loss for how to reliably get someone to eject (or better yet, find a situation where getting someone to eject early in the game is easy). I've never played the game before the sale, so my in-game knowledge consists of basic movement and weapons firing.
Can all these "achievements" posts go somewhere else? They have nothing to do with this sale.
And this post does? Irony!

I'm was just restating what had been said on the steam forums. I only have a level 18 monk and 15 apprentice and just tried it to see what it was like. All i know is that it is just poorly designed for veterans and noobs alike. I mean throwing in a completely new level with a completely different way of playing and just leaving the player to have fun figuring it out themselves is bad game design.

I am sure Dungeon Defenders is more so built for consoles, but holy crap bad game design. The thumbs up on items make no sense and it is stupid how you figure out what each of the stats for the items actually are. Then figuring out what the towers even do. Maybe all this is easier to tell on a console, but for PC it is terrible. If I didn't randomly click in the scroll wheel I would still be guessing at what the towers really did.

Other than that the game is fun. I guess the developers heard everyone shouting about how they hate games hand holding them, but damn did they go way to extreme on the opposite direction.

People that posted on her thread claimed she got all her 1k+ games via coal farming; I highly doubt that. I have almost 1k games on my account and touched like 10% of it.
That would be hilarious if that was a press account or something.....
Any opinions o which DLC is worth getting for Shogun 2? I've never played a Total War game and intend to only play single-player.
All can be used for single player if I'm not mistaken. But the campaign would probably best best if you don't care about what are essentially new units or dismemberment.
The only reason they can't be traded would be if you won/got those games on an account that hasn't existed for more or hasn't been in good standing for 30 days. An account has to be in good standing before it can trade. Unless trading a game makes it so it can't be traded again immediately, which if I'm not mistaken doesn't happen.
That's the thing though. The Steam accounts are like 9 years old. What would put me in bad standing? What does "good standing" mean exactly? The two accounts don't get much use...

You can send non-tradable games to people as gifts on Steam that do not own that specific game but if they unpack it to their inventory it remains untradeable.

still left to come, my guess is DOD will be one day (since it has a gift achievement) and CS: source will be on the other day.

To be honest I have no idea what good standing means. Maybe it means it has to have been used recently, but still older than 30 days. So if you didn't use it for like a year and then suddenly used it again you have to get back into good standing.

But really who knows. It is their way of not being specific so they can't really be at fault for keeping you in bad standing for essentially any reason.

I more so figure it would be just because it usually is every sale. That and I want to buy it for someone.

To my knowledge the only way to get in "bad standing" is to use hacks/cheats in a VAC game such as TF2, L4D, CoD Black Ops, ect. Otherwise you are in good standing, using console commands =/= hacks or cheats. The hacks and cheats that will count against you are things that you have to download that make the game unfair in multiplayer. Unless you've been using hacks in games you should be in good standing.

I came back from being out of town for a couple days and saw Left 4 Dead 2 in my inventory, I guess I won it for writing a recommendation for a game. Too bad I already own it, but I think I'm going to just try and trade it.

I really am thinking of picking up The Ship, that game sounds interesting and considering you get a total of 5 copies, might make a good group buy with some friends. I'll probably wait though just in case its a daily deal...

I think they're relevant enough to the sale. For some people (myself included), knowing how accessible the achievement is plays a part in my decision about whether or not to buy games that I'm on the fence about. It also encourages light discussion about whether games are truly deals for the sale price, and has an influence on whether people buy the game or not. As efficient as it is to have a thread filled with nothing but "in for one" and "thanks OP," I much prefer reading initial impressions about various aspects of the games, including achievements, from others who have given the game a try (especially initial impressions from new players).

I definitely agree with you that the level is poorly designed. As cool a concept as it is, it just doesn't work in a way that's fun. Also agreed on the game design, as it's impossible to truly identify upgrades without picking up the item and calculating whether it's better in the tavern, as I've found "downgrades" that were slightly better than what I was wearing, and "upgrades" that didn't even come close to being better than what I had on. The game is definitely designed for a console, with the circular selection wheels and snap-to tower upgrade/repair design.

If anyone needs to be run through dungeon defenders, send me a PM. I'll do a game or two in a bit to help people get the achievement.

Either way, any account can still gift games to a username or e-mail address. It's kind of pointless for Steam to block trading games through the inventory trade system when you can just "trade" a game by gifting it to someone. I've had a couple of users send me games from fake accounts already.

Agreed. Discussion relevant to the games on sale and what people are winning keep me coming back to the thread. This, of course, excludes the trade posts, as those have their own thread and would only serve to clutter this one up.

As far as the bans go we will see what happens. Nothing official from Valve yet...and it could have been people that totally abused it. By that I mean hundreds of accounts...like the one account someone posted. It had 8000 dollars worth of games on it...and they only played like 30 of them. 400 coupons and like 15 games in their inventory.

And apparently they were on "vacation". Which could be true, but that doesn't change anything because someone abused something on it.

55 achievements deep and I finally win my first game: Wings of Prey. Not bad since it's an achievement game and I can probably trade it off easily if I don't unpack it.

As far as the sale goes, thanks for the heads up for whoever mentioned the id packs. There are two. I think one has Rage an Q4, the other is $10 cheaper or something. Seems like a cool deal.
I'm not complaining about the sale. Or the promotion. Who could? But I do agree. I think it's a symptom of having a bigger and bigger library on Steam. There's been some good sales, but most of them are things I already have, or am not interested in. We've been going at these super-sales for, what, 3 years now? Like Santa Claus, the excitement and wonder is for the youngsters, not the sale veterans.
Yeah, can't complain of course because I've still gotten some great deals and Amazon's been bringing its muscle behind some great Steamworks deals to compete with this sale. Though, if this feeling of indifference or lack of excitement makes me a veteran, I'm worried, as I only got Steam earlier this year! Premature aging, egads!

For What its worth I found wings of prey to be entertaining and fun in an hour or two sit down bursts. Though people say you should have a joystick to play it or at least a gamepad (I use 360 controller)

For what it is worth, HAWX plays really well with an Xbox controller but I've not tried the PC version. It should hopefully pick it up.

Wings of Prey is clunky with an Xbox controller on consoles at best. It took a goodly amount of effort to get a semi playable configuration on the 360 controller on the PC. It does not immediately pick up the 360 controller.
That Binding of Isaac achievement... I've been to 5 devil rooms the past 2 hours, still no Kraumper
I played this game for 2 hours the other day and only got one devil room... BoI is decent fun but not when you're just trying to get this achievement. I got this game for free so I wanted to go ahead and earn the steam achievement, so I ended up resorting to cheatengine. Not for everyone I suppose (many would say it takes the fun out of the game, but feeling empowered is nice), but useful if you just want to get the achievement:

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but getting the Frozen Synapse achievement is VERY VERY EASY. Open the game, click play offline, click on skirmish generator. On the left, give yourself 1 machine gunner and nothing else. On the right, set the opponent to 0 of everything. Hit play then after the level loads, hit prime. YOU AUTOMATICALLY WIN AND GET THE ACHIEVEMENT. :D

Here's a video that shows everything:

Yeah, both ME1 and 2 were $5 each a few days ago.

Yes they were. $5 a pop for both ME 1 and 2.

How much a value do you feel the Napeleon total war game is? I know it was game of the year, but I don't have much RTS experience - is it easy to get into? Does it play like Age of empires or command and conquer or starcraft 2?

has it been cheaper?

My 2 cents on Mafia 2:
Do not expect it to be a GTA-style game. It isn't. It looks open world, but it's very much a story/mission-driven game that doesn't provide much reason to mess around. IMO, this is not a bad thing. Unfortunately, I think it got a lot of flack when it was released because of this.

I found the story to be entertaining, even if it is basically a potluck of mob movie conventions, and it kept me engaged pretty much throughout. The controls are pretty good, though I will admit to using a 360 controller as I prefer it for 3rd person action games. It's a pretty good looking game, and the overall aesthetics (art and sound) are very nice. I even bought all the DLC because I like the look of the cars and outfits as part of the period setting.

I'd definitely recommend it. It'd be a no-brainer at $5, but I definitely think $7.50 is a fair price for how much I enjoyed it.
...Aaaand I traded it together with HiB4 code for Renegade Ops + DLC pack :)

I'm happy.
Over all I like the gift pile much more than the summer sale. The only available game in the summer sale was an Alien game. This winter I won Operation Flashpoint(a game I had no intention of playing). I was able to flip it for The Orange Box.

I was also able to score Portal 2 off a CAGer who had an extra copy he won for a $5 game.

The only bad thing about the gift pile is crafting coal into coupons. That's a terrible outcome.

As for the scammers, I have no sympathy for them. I'm completely okay with them being banned. They devalued the resources honest people worked to achieve. They deserve their consequences.

Yay got L4D2 for $5 so I can play with my friends who just got it, $10 was just a little too much for me because my computer will either barely be able to run it or not be able to run it at all. Still not sure if I want to craft 7 of my 10 coal or trade it though, I think ill wait another day or so to decide.
The only bad thing about the gift pile is crafting coal into coupons. That's a terrible outcome.
How about getting games you already have? They should've had a routine that checked if user had game X, don't give him that again. Better yet, they should've either given a token credit (say $5) in the Steam Wallet or targeted the discount coupons toward games on your Wish List and then made them valid only during the promo. Instead of waiting two months to use your coupon, waiting for a sale to come and stack it, get some instant gratification by getting 50% off something you've already stated you want. How effing hard would that be to set up? It wouldn't, but Gabe Newell's too busy deciding if he wants two or three foot-long subs for his coffee break snack.

So does a mechanism in steam exist to trade a game to folks other than friends, for instance can you specify and item is available for trade ala ebay ?
I hate shmups, but Jamestown is wonderful. :D
Couldn't agree more - I am so glad I gave it a shot for the daily achievement - I've dumped a few hours into it and loving every minute of it.

You can try the Steam Trading Forums - warning, it's an absolute cluster. But worth a shot.

If anyone is eyeing up the Shogun 2 and/or the DLC, keep in mind that Gamersgate has all of it (except for the Ikko Ikki clan pack) for 75% off as well. Combine that with the buy 3 get one free and there ya go.

Personally I'm more intrigued by the upcoming standalone.

But alas, my lack of brainpower and patience is still keeping me from picking up Shogun 2. Dammit...
Crafted 7 coal and got a 50% off coupon for The Void. Great, 50% off a game I already own...
I managed to win a game I already own, then crafted 7 coal into half off of the same game....but I did craft 7 into Costume Quest, so I can't complain that much....

Too kill some time, I decided to install Champions Online. Go to launch it, set up my account, and now it's downloading 1.3GB of patch. WTF did Steam load on my PC and guzzle bandwidth for?

Well I finally won a game. Super Meat Boy! But I already own it :(

Do you think they could purposely be giving people games they already have to encourage trading?
